United 93 - Go see it

I just got back from seeing United 93. It's about the 4th hijacked plane that crashed into the field in PA when the passengers tried to take back over the flight from the muslim terrorists on September 11th.   I strongly recommend that everyone see this movie.   Americans, and the world, seem to have forgotten that there is a large group of people that want to kill us all.

Moonfall

Moonfall is another movie from groaner disaster movie guru Roland Emmerich.  This movie is one of those -turn your brain off completely sort of movies.  If you are familair with physics, turn that off.  the laws of physics are even more optional in this movie than in 2012, which features a limo doing jumps under a subway train...  the groan are more than that. The special effects are pretty good though. Interesting sci-fi story but we're not talking Arthur C. Clarke here either... If y

Jurassic Park World

I enjoyed this movie.  I was a big fan of the first Jurassic Park.  It was a definite classic.  Of course, that was before Steven Speilberg nuked the fridge... Jurassic Park 2 kind of sucked as the only character they kept was Jeff "The Annoyance" Goldblum.  Jurassic Park III, well... it was better than 2.  The kid was less annoying too.  So yeah... this is better than 2 or 3. Have you seen it?  Where does it rate for you?

Latter Days

Like last week, I've pulled this movie out of my gay movie collection.  This has some nice eye candy is a touching movie.    Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in this movie as well.  He auditioned to for the gay lead. (just a bit of trivia from IMDB on the movie)

Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

As I mentioned in my book blog a couple weeks ago, I have been a fan of the Chronicles of Narnia for a long time.  I've always been a bit disappointed that they didn't do all the books as movies, but they also seem to run out of steam in the process.  (this series included).  That said, I think they did a good job with 3 movies they did in this series.  The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was the best of the 3 though, I think. If you haven't watched it and you like fantasy, this was well d

Hollyweird Articulated

I used to have a love of movies.  I have over 1500 DVDs/Blu-Rays/4K disks in my collection.  I could be counted on to buy multiple movies a month. 2022 I bought 5 total new movies.  I upgraded a handful of older things. This fellow, a published author, has articulated the problem rather nicely.   As a gay guy, I rather prefer men.  And Hollyweird can't even fake having those any more. It's a growing problem in books too, especially since 2015.  I was rereading

Uncharted (Movie)

I'm not going to complain about a movie with Tom Holland... This movie is entertaining as a stand alone thing.  I've only played the game a little bit, so I'm not as married to the source material.  That said, it is a rip-off of Lara Croft's Tomb Raider which is itself a rip off of Indiana Jones.  I'm sure there is a deeper dive there too.  To be fair, I like all the franchises and pretty much most things that fit in this sort of genre. (Don't get me started on National Treasure ) Enj

Batman Begins

Of all the times Batman has been in movie form, the first two movies in Chris Nolan's reboot top them.  Batman Begins gives the gritty, more realistic and most important of all, less campy version of Batman.  This movie hit all the right notes and was only really topped by it immediate sequel, the Dark Knight.  (And then pissed away in that god-awful mess called the Dark Knight Rises.  I swear Nolan purposely trashed that movie so that no one would ask him to make another)   Anyway, Ba

Beautiful Thing

So this week, I wanted to break into my extensive collection of gay movies.  This is a good movie.  The British accent can be a bit much at times if you are in the USA.  It sounds sexy though, even if you can't figure out what the hell they are saying.  That really is only a few scenes.  It is a good movie.  Well worth having in the collection.   What are you waiting for?  Go get it

The Towering Inferno

I thought I'd jump into the way back machine and bring up a movie that's even older than I am.  I was big into disaster movies when I was a kid and there was quite the string of them of them in the 70's.  This was a grand-daddy of them with a who's who from a couple major studios coming together.  You had superstars of the time together in this thing.  Paul Newman and Steve McQueen.  They have exactly the same number of lines.  There are a ton of other recognizable stars of the day in there and

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Well, this movie is a bit different.  So, right up front, let me say that I liked this movie a lot more than the critiques.  Sci-fi and fantasy are definitely in my wheelhouse.  I also enjoying watching Dane DeHaan.  Kris Wu is also a nice in the eye-candy category too.    The movie's special effects are outstanding.  The plot, which those critiques complained about, requires you to pay attention.  Not Inception levels of attention, but not casual watching either.  I enjoyed the movie

Wonder Woman

This is the best DC movie I've seen in awhile.  Probably the best since the Dark Knight.  It is way better than the Superman movie, and Batman V. Superman.  I also enjoyed Chris Pine in this movie.  Though, to be truthful, I seem to like the job Chris Pine does in all the movies I see him in.   For the movie itself, it has a good solid plot.  It explains the picture from Batman Vs. Superman very well.  The movie has action and character.  It's good to see a kick-ass woman kicking ass b

Mysterious Skin

In last week's promotion of Latter Days, I mentioned the trivia that Joseph Gordon-Levitt auditioned for the lead gay role in the movie.  Well, he got it in this movie.  There are actually a couple of sex scenes in this one and you get to see stuff. lol.  It is funny that for a long time if you typed "is Joseph Gordon-Levitt gay?" in google, it popped up to Gay Authors and a topic I made years ago...   Anyway, the movie itself is a bit odd.  It was definitely interesting.  Different.

Nobody

I have been very turned off by the lecturing nonsense that's been released from Hollywood the last few years.  The hack Millennial moron writers that have taken on scriptwriting and laid waste to subtlety and entertainment have virtually destroyed an entire industry and murdered my hobby of video collecting.  I have over 1300 DVD's and Blu-Rays.  But I've only bought 5 in 2021.  And 4 of those were 80's and 90's movies on 4K.  But I heard Nobody was both good entertainment and lacking any obviou

The Martian

So, this week I wanted to plug a geekfest movie.  As anyone interested in space can attest, this is an interesting movie.  This movie is one of those rare occasions where I liked both the book and movie adaptations.  Definitely worth watching if you haven't seen.

2010: The Year We Made Contact

This is an oldie but goodie.  The visuals in this movie are stunning, especially when you consider it came out in 1984.  It has long fueled my thoughts of space and space exploration.  It is also a much tighter story, unlike the very plodding 2001.  Sci-Fi movies suffered from long, slow scenes to soaring music in the 1965- 1980 timeset.  You can see this in the first Alien movie, the first Star Trek Movie (The Motion Picture), and to a lesser extent Star Wars.   I think Star Wars was the one to

Baby Driver

So, while I was laid up this weekend, I finally had some time where I could do pretty much nothing but catch up on the very large pile of movies I have sitting here.  Well, I could have caught up on the very large pile of books or games or reading lists or nevermind.  I watched movies.  Baby Driver was one of them.   Now, I love action movies.  Check.  This has action. I'm rather fond of any movie with a Twink-like character in it.  Check. Check.  Kevin Spacey almost always p

Midway - (2019)

This is a good movie that suffers from the comparison problem.  It's a pretty high bar for those interested in world war II movies to leap over the original 1976 Midway.  The original had Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, Glenn Ford, Robert Michum, Robert Wagner amount others.  The ensemble cast was a who's who of Hollywood legends.  So, set that aside if you, like me, grew up with your dad watching the movie. The 2019 movie was well paced.  The cast clicked pretty good.  And Dennis Quaid and W

Movies, Movies, Movies, Oh My!

So, this past weekend I went to see Rambo. holy cow, was that movie ever graphic. Extremely graphic. and it was pretty good too.   This weekend sees the opening of two things I've wanted to see. Spiderwick Chronicles and Jumper. The more I watch the trailer for Jumper, the more I want to see. http://media.movies.ign.com/media/033/033924/vids_1.html   Hayden Christiansan shirtless is probably enough... but you also have the uber cool Samuel L Jackson in it.   Anyhoo, I will be seeing

L.I.E.

This movie is interesting.  The actors are cute in it.  It does wander right into controversial teritory of course. It's definitely worth seeing for the character development and tough topics it hits on.

The Prestige

So, this week for my Monday movie mania, I thought I'd stick with a Christopher Nolan movie and recommend the Prestige.   This movie was great.  It has a few good twists.     I think I might pick up a copy in Blu-ray as I have on DVD.

The Negotiater

I forgot to set this to post this morning... oops. This is one of those late 90's action movies full of one-liners.  And it features Samuel L. Jackson doing his thing as a BAMF.  If you haven't seen it and you like action movies and one-liners, this is a good movie.

I Am Number Four

So I mentioned I am Number Four series of books by Pittacus Lore last Friday in my book blog.  They did manage to make one movie of the series.  It was a decent adventure with some nice eyecandy.  Special effects were good and the movie was decent.

Eragon

I mentioned the Eragon books a few weeks ago.  They did make a movie out of the book.  I liked the movie enough, but it has some weaknesses.  The director's leather fetish for the young male actors was not one of them.   This is worth seeing if you enjoy fantasy, dragons etc.  The effects were done well and Jeremy Irons always adds some gravitas to what he shows up in. And the bad guy is played by John Malcovitch.  Check it out.

X-Men First Class

I loved the eyecandy on screen.  Special effects and good looking actors.   It was a good movie.  Plenty of action and it tied logically into the existing X-men movies. This is definitely in my collection and staying there.
