Zombie Apocalypse tonight...

Tonight a rare astronomical alignment that has not occurred in centuries will appear in our skies.   Tonight is the winter solstice, a lunar eclipse and a blood moon.     It is thought that this rare astronomical convergence will trigger a Zombie Apocalypse.   In the event of a zombie apocalypse, don't get depressed. It's your big chance to smack your obnoxious neighbors in the face with a shovel.   Use weapons that are as silent as possible as noise attracts zombies. Inflict as much

Yes - the Yes Album

The first giant hit from Yes was the Yes Album in Feb. 1971. It hit no. 4 on the UK charts, #40 on the Billboard 200 and certified platinum.     The Yes Album was so unique and different from what was being done that it would stop people in their tracks. It's rare when a new sound comes along and even rarer still when its allowed to flourish by an industry that is traditionally known for me-too sound-a-like whoredom.

Yes - Fragile

What happens when you put together a group of classically trained and very talented musicians? You get Yes.   Yes was, at its high water mark, Jon Anderson(vocals), Chris Howe(lead guitar), Chris Squire(bass), Rick Wakeman(keyboards) and Alan White(percussion).     Yes circa 1972 left to right: White, Howe, Wakeman, Squire, Anderson   In 1971 Yes was flying high. Their breakthrough album the Yes Album was gathering fame and awards for the band. When they released Fragile in November, th

Would you like to play a game?

Collaborative stories can be fun but, sometimes they can be a pain. There have to be ground rules and unless you want a grand mess on your hands, a consensus on setting, characters, and just how far you can go.   I was the trail boss for a collaborative story some years ago called Collision. It still out there somewhere. CRVBoy's I think. It was fun to do and it turned out to be a good read.   While I NEVER want to be trail boss again, it could be fun to collaborate. It all d

Would you like to play a game?

Do you want to read or listen to music for fun? I understand perfectly. After all, what's the point otherwise? We ask too little of our art these days. We want it to give us a few laughs. We like to be entertained, maybe excited or even frightened. We don't often ask that it teach us anything and that's a shame. That's what art is for. It's supposed to challenge you, disturb you, open your eyes, expand your consciousness and understanding. There is another level to reading and listeni

World War Z- What book?

Usually when you buy the rights to a book, you assume that the movie is going to be based on the book. Hollyweird is known for taking liberties but in this case they threw away the book and rewrote it.   The only thing that the two have in common are zombies, a mysterious plague that causes them and the United Nations. That's it.       Max Brooks originally wrote World War Z in the style of Studs Terkel's The Good War. It was a collection of stories told by the veterans of World War II.

World AIDS Day

1996   I have seen the fire Destroying everything in it path In its blazing wrath   I have seen the fire Bringing terror as its might As it consumes the night   I have seen the fire Slaying friends and lovers Strangers and brothers   I have seen the fire. Out of control consumning souls Hell on earth a mass funeral pyre   I have been burned by the fire With scars that don't show The loss it still burns and stings   Friends and lovers I can not replace I am haunted by the

Work, work, work

Busy, busy, busy   A few weeks ago I got a call from a headhunter who was looking for field engineers in my area for a big project.   Well I did one site which turned out to be an audition and was offered a contract.   Long story short- I got a contract with a major national bank to do network upgrades for Mississippi branches and it looks like I'm going to be super busy at least through November.   I won't be around as much as I usually am and some of my projects are going to have to wa

Woo-hoo!

I won! I won! I won!   I have recently started hanging out on E-bay. It's a really cool place to pick up things at a bargain.   I got a copy of IBM's DB2 for the PC for $25. A new purchase would cost me hundreds. Computer books , science and text books- always WAY overpriced new can be got for a song on E-bay. I got my Object Oriented Programming in C++ for $10 (90$ at the bookstore). College book stores- what a racket!   What I'm really pleased about is the auction I won tonight. I found

Woo Hoo!

One of my favorite authors used my name for a character in his latest book!   Jack Cambell, author of the Lost Fleet and Beyond the Frontier series, used my name as a minor character in his latest book Steadfast.   Jamie Savik is the captain of the battle cruiser Formidable.   To me this is more fun than a birthday because I don't get any older.

Why you are going to miss George Bush

Yep. That's right. You are going to miss him.     Fat chance.     You will miss him. Just give it time.     I sincerely doubt it but you are welcome to try to defend King George.   Oh no- I'm not going to try to defend him. In many ways his generally incoherent style of public speaking made him one of the most ineffective presidents in living memory because he simply failed to explain his policies.     Don't you mean the worst in history?   No. I'm older than most of you and re

Why Westburo/Phelps Phails Miserably

Check it:   I Corinthians 13:   4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.   8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will

Why the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are classics

When I was a little nipper, I didn’t care much for reading. I was more about climbing trees, playing sports and fishing. Sitting still and reading wasn’t really on my agenda. In fact school and reading were way, way down on my list of priorities. My grades showed it. I wasn’t an idiot. I just wasn’t interested or connected.   My grandmother noticed and she used her grandmotherly skills on me. She started reading the Hobbit to me aloud on rainy winter days. I’m not sure why exactly but

Why Obama is going to betray gay voters

Most of you were children when Clinton ran the country with trial balloons and focus groups.   You probably remember Bill Clinton as a guy who played the sax on MTV, liked to get hummers from interns, got in trouble for getting spoo on a blue dress and was married to that horrible b*tch senator from New York. The same one who was just thrown under the democratic primary bus by the failed President Elect Barry O'bumble.   You are probably too young to remember how Clinton betrayed gay voters

Why I'm not in Congress

I may be evil but I do have standards.   Knowing that nobody has actually bothered to read the Pork, I mean Stimilus Package, I would insert the following clause:   Amendment 301.23.451 All states and municipalaties that accept stimilius funds are required to have all of their citizens renounce their faith and begin to worship the evil goddess Globulus. In early April, 100 of the nations best basketball players must be sacrificed to Globulus to avoid a plague of boils and rats.   Amendme

Where I'm at

Is a truly terrible place.   The last Friday in February my 90 year old mother fell and broke her hip. Luckily she broke the femur and not close into the joint so the repair surgery was not complicated and didn't need a replacement. Unluckily, she is 90 and opiate sensitive. Anything they give her for pain is a nightmare of nausea and delirium.  She spent a week in the hospital for the surgery, a week in a rehab hospital and six weeks in a rehab care facility and came home Friday the 1

When to OUT People: a Guide for Nuking Hypocrites

"Outing" people is, under most circumstances, traumatic and potentially destructive.   It can even be dangerous to people.   It should only be done only under certain exceptional circumstances. Examples follow and then guidelines.   Reverend Ted Haggard, millionaire leader of a mega-church, was a highly influential, outspoken critic of gay people and gay rights. He counseled parents to send their gay kids to pray-the-gay-away camp. He was caught with a hustler and crystal meth.   Mor

When it's not just about you

A few years ago I was fat and out of shape. I got tired of it and decided to do something about it.    Over several years I went to the gym 3 or 4 times a week. I didn't do anybody's insanity workout. I studied and talked to some people and came up with plans that would work for me.    Sometimes I missed. Sometimes things came up and just didn't have time. I was sick on occasion but, more often than not, I went.    I went down from 300 to 240- over time. I haven't l

What's worse than being stuck between a rock & a hard place?

The answer is being stuck between a bud and a bro.   There's something you might not know about Southern culture. In some ways we are almost Arabic.   Once we make friends, there's very little that can change that. We're loyal to an absolute fault even when it hurts and goes way past making any sense. Why sure Butch, I'll follow you over that cliff.     There is one place that I absolutely hate to be: in between people I care about in a controversy.   I literally don't know how to han

What They Don't Tell You

When I was a kid and adults were trying to scare me out of my nasty homosexual hobby, they used to tell me stuff designed to scare it out of you. They said all you could ever hope to be is a bartender or a prostitute. Homosexuals always end up in prison. Homosexuals are useless, can't have families and other delightful things.   Of course that was all a product of the WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) society that I was immersed in. Some of it was self fulfilling.   Many young gay men in t

What makes a good Systems Administrator?   --------------------------------------------------------------------------------     A deep streak of Masochism, very little life and the ability to wake up nice and cheery at 2am to a panicked phone call from an idiot user who has just done something stupid that is going to cost you two weeks work.   At least a BS in Computer Science. With all the BS in this game, you'll need at least that much.   Experience. Of course you can't get a job unti
