It's Back to Work I Go...

A few of you know that about 7 months ago, I lost my job.   About two years ago, and after what had felt like a lifetime of international assignments and moving from one city and/or country to the next, I'd refused yet another foreign assignment and had asked to be given a home-based position, although I was still willing to travel extensively. My company was accommodating. The economy, unfortunately, was not, and in September 2012 I was let go, with 15 days' notice, but a fairly handsome seve

The Sweet Hereafter in the Social Media

On January 1, I sent a message to my friend Vassilis and wished him a Happy New Year and for his nameday via Facebook. He responded in kind, and we exchanged a couple of notes on plans for 2013.   Three days ago, I noticed through the updates section on Facebook that people were wishing him a good trip and mentioned that they'd miss him. I didn't pay much attention, until I realized that the goodbyes sounded rather permanent, as if he were emigrating. I thought it rather odd that he'd mentione

Back to school!

When I was but a little podga, I loved the anticipation of school re-opening and all the annual preparation rituals.   Armed with the list of school supplies and syllabus, my mom, sister and I would make the rounds to buy books and atlases, notebooks and drawing pads. I was mesmerized by the new books, by the way they formed orderly stacks, by their still clean and sharp corners and their fresh-from-the-printers smell. We couldn't afford a new satchel every year, but until fifth grade--when I

Exercising gratitude

In one of my stories, the main character has a scar over his left eyebrow. His best friend hit him with a toy truck when they were both four years old.   That's my scar, but it was a rock, not a truck, and my friend M and I were both ten. We were in an empty lot behind my house, throwing big clumps of dried mud at each other and laughing as they exploded harmlessly on impact and got us good and dirty. Unfortunately that last clump had a rock hidden in it. M helped me climb the wall back into m

London 2012 Opening Ceremony

Just finished watching parts of the ceremony for the 2nd time, because last night the Greek commentator just would not shut up.   At the end, I came away with the something I've always felt about the British, and that's that no other nation is quite as able to make history a living part of its present and future. While there were parts of the ceremony that didn't have much significance for me and while there were the usual difficulties of trying to create a show that's equally spectacular for

Olympic Memories

Less than a week to the Olympics, and the SO and I, for two, are excited.   We met in 1995, and 1996 was the first year we planned to spend our summer vacation together. As luck would have it, the only common time we could schedule coincided with the Olympic Games. I was hesitant, because I knew myself, and I was either going to be glued to the TV or resentful that I wasn't watching, neither of which was probably conducive to impressing the guy I'd spent the last year falling for. Once I fin

By his toolbox shall ye know him

OK, people, first of all I mean toolbox in the literal sense, so those of you stopping by for some titillating reading, move on, there's nothing to see here. However, those of you, who would like to learn from someone else's experiences, stick around.   The background to this blog entry is that we've been discussing some rebuilding (as I describe it) or light remodelling (as the SO describes it) in the living room. We want to put up some shelves, move the TV around, which will require some rew

I might as well have stayed in bed a little longer

So I woke up at 6:00 am this morning. Since forecasts are calling for another scorcher, I figured I'd water the lush tropical forest the SO maintains on our balcony, while drinking my early morning performance enhancer (coffee). I then took myself off to the gym.   I returned home at 8:30 to find the SO on the balcony watering the plants, with a long-suffering expression on his face. Before I had the chance to ask him what he was doing, he turned to me:   "Just once, I wish you'd think to ch

Experiments in the kitchen...

Due to heat, travel and pool at gym being repaired, training has been sporadic over the past couple of weeks (come to think of it, I should be reporting about the weeks I actually do train per schedule, I'd need fewer entries).   Anyway, I figured yesterday that, given the lack of training, I should do the right thing, and not make a run (in my car) to Ben & Jerry's for Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz. But I needed ice cream, so I decided to try this recipe I keep on encountering when trawlin
