AFriendlyFace Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Oh no! How shocking and unexpected. Poor thing that's awful! Thank goodness it wasn't more serious and he's already on the road to recovery. I'm so very sorry to hear this though Take care, Steve, and get well and back to us as quickly as possible! Thanks for letting us know, Viv, and please do keep us informed. Also, big thanks to his sister for passing along the message. All the best, Kevin

viv Posted June 26, 2009 Author Posted June 26, 2009 Another update: Hi Vivian,Just got back from seeing Steve, he's still in good spirits, even though he's going back into the OR tomorrow to fix the lower left leg and foot. He throughly enjoyed your email, laughing out loud at the cell phone story! (didn't seem to bother his ribs too much though!) You and your family obviously mean a lot to him, and he was so pleased with your email. Below is a website my sister set up to keep friends and family informed of his recovery. It's free, and she updates it as we get the info. I can continue giving you updates as well, and if there's anything you want to email him, I can print it off and give it to him. Thanks for being such a great friend to him, and sending him your wishes. I will be in touch.
viv Posted June 26, 2009 Author Posted June 26, 2009 Steve "volunteered" to have his photo taken, this was Thursday, June 25th, the evening before he heads into the OR for surgery number 2.He's given me the ok to send the pic out to everyone!
Krista Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Aww.. look at that smile.. he's a trooper.. I hope he has a speedy recovery..
DragonFire Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Blimey, braver than I am. No way would I let someone take a pic of me in hospital. Good to see he's still smiling though.
viv Posted June 26, 2009 Author Posted June 26, 2009 For a guy in a hospital with half of his body broken, he doesn't look half bad. Also, I've had the pleasure of seeing him in a much more handsome state so I'm glad to see him smiling.
Site Moderator TalonRider Posted June 26, 2009 Site Moderator Posted June 26, 2009 From what little I know about Steve, I think he'd have that smile no matter what. It is good to see him in such good spirits.
Zeoanne Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Best Wishes for a speedy recovery for Steve. I hope all went well in his surgery today. I've been MIA for a couple of days and missed the news when they came out. I know you'll be fine, might be a slow recovery but in the end you'll be as good as new. We're all thinking of you Steve and wishing you the best. Chin up buddy!!! Your guardian angels will never leave your side.
viv Posted June 27, 2009 Author Posted June 27, 2009 Steve was back in his room in the Trauma ward by about 6:30 pm tonight. The nurses said that while he was groggy and tired from the anesthetic, he was doing well and resting. Apparently the surgery went well.
Former Member Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Glad to hear the surgery went well! Thanks for keeping us updated Viv.
Conner Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Steve, I had a good look at your hospital pic. Heck, you look in better shape than I do and I'm healthy.
Duncan Ryder Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Steve, all best wishes for a very speedy recovery. Duncan.
viv Posted June 27, 2009 Author Posted June 27, 2009 Hello,Just a quick note, as I'm leaving shortly for the hospital. I didn't see Steve yesterday, as he didn't get back to his unit until about 630 and was very groggy. Apparently the surgery went well, he called this morning about 715! He says theres a lot of pain, he thinks because the foot and tib/fib weren't compressed into place before, so now it hurts. (I also think that after the femurs were repaired, he was sedated and full of pain meds, so wasn't aware of the initial pain) He still souds positive, he said he keeps telling himself, there's more pain to come, but eventually it'll be better. Will update more after visit.
viv Posted June 28, 2009 Author Posted June 28, 2009 Received a phone call this morning at 7:15, from Steve, looking for his cell phone! He had a rough night with pain in his lower leg and foot after surgery. He said there were alot of broken pieces to put back together. (I believe he said 56!) As well, they have a vacuum attached to the dressing. Doing a bit of reading on the internet, apparently this is an optimal way of healing. The plastic surgeons team were supposed to come take a look at the leg/foot today, so they'd turned the vacuum off, which alleviated a lot of the discomfort. They never showed, so the vacuum was turned back on around 5pm. They also changed his pain medications as the fentanyl (?) was rather disruptive for him. He didn't show any signs of discomfort after the vacuum was turned back on, so either the new pain meds are working better, or the bones had settled a bit. Again, he was in good spirits, chatting and teasing the nurses.
jfalkon Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Ouch! What a rough few days! I hope the worst is over. Get well soon.
AFriendlyFace Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Oh poor thing That still sounds so rough! I'm so glad he's able to keep his spirits up! I'm not sure if you know, but what's the general long-term prognosis? Any estimate on when he'll be able to leave the hospital and how much/how long he'll need in physical therapy? I guess it might be too soon to know those sorts of things, but that's always what I'm most curious about in times like this. Take care, Steve, and keep your spirits high! -Kevin
viv Posted June 28, 2009 Author Posted June 28, 2009 As far as I've heard, it'll be 6-8 weeks once he gets to a care center outside the hospital... how long from now until that happens, I don't know.
Myk Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 It is sad that I know exactly wich hospital that is from the picture. Sounds like he is moving along fairly well, but I'm really glad his spirits are up. HUGS! G
Ieshwar Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Hope he gets on his feet very soon. Glad to see him smiling. Get well soon! Take care, Ieshwar
Rigel Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Mend well. Mend quickly. Best wishes for a speedy, complete recovery. --Rigel
