Site Administrator Popular Post Graeme Posted March 9, 2014 Site Administrator Popular Post Share Posted March 9, 2014 I'm not sure if this is going be a flop, but I'm going to try anyway What I'd like this to be is a thread on Good News stories. I was surfing the Internet the other day and stumbled across the CBS Good News Page. I'd like to see if we can do the same, with a thread on just good news stories. As they state on their page, this will be for: Stories that show the best of human nature; people helping people, triumphs of the human spirit. I'll start with my favourite from the CBS Good News Page: Michigan Middle School Football Team Conspires for Touching Touchdown Feel free to add your own! 13 Link to comment

Popular Post JamesSavik
I got good news Friday. I have a condition called angle recession glaucoma which is caused by repeated trauma- eg. getting beaten up. Boxers get it and it can damage your optic nerves to the point of blindness. My ocular pressure has been stable long enough for me to stop medications for it. It has to be checked regularly but it's in remission. NO more wretched eye-drops- at least for a while. 13 Link to comment

TetRefine
*does not think that is good news* Why not? It highlights a young kid applying himself to something useful. If he can do that at 13, who knows what he'll be able to accomplish 20 years down the line with a higher education and experience. Someone seems to be one hell of a negative nelly. Link to comment

Er... you do realise that we're talking nuclear fusion, not nuclear fission? No one has made a practical nuclear fusion reactor -- all current designs use more energy than they create. Nuclear fusion is what powers the Sun. If we can build a practical nuclear fusion reactor, our energy problems will be solved for the foreseeable future, since hydrogen is one of the most plentiful substances on Earth (using electricity to get it from seawater). Nuclear fusion also doesn't have the long-term radioactive by-products that nuclear fission has. Sadly, the 'breakthrough' needed to get a nuclear fusion reactor to work productively has been 'on the horizon' for several decades now. I'm still waiting, and I've been waiting since I was a teenager Link to comment

Site Administrator Graeme Posted March 10, 2014 Author Site Administrator Share Posted March 10, 2014 The word is 'practical', not 'viable'. Fusion reactions have been produced in laboratories around the world (and, as the article showed, even in school laboratories). The problem is that they currently take more energy than they produce. As a means of generating energy, they're currently a failure. That doesn't mean you can't produce nuclear fusion -- it's just not currently commercially practical as an energy source. Continuing this thread, I went searching and found the Good News page from the ABC (American version, not Australia). Here's one of the stories from that page: Penn State Raises $13.3M for Pediatric Cancer Research at Dance Marathon Link to comment
Celethiel
*thinks practical and viable can be equatable.* you mean they're taking Pediatric Cancer patients and making them do a dance marathon for research the horrors! the horrors! (we also need a Horror emote ) and people are paying them to do this I think there are some sick sadistic people out there Edited March 10, 2014 by Celethiel Link to comment
