Just caught up on the comments on the latest chapter.  That was a blast!  I really enjoyed the response to the story.  I'm blessed with such amazing and thoughtful readers.  I never feel like my responses are adequate to show my appreciation.  If you're taking the time to read and then even more time to comment, I can't say thanks enough.  Every interaction with readers is a joy.

Looking at Jeff's responses made me think about something.  What's going to happen to Dustin if someone goes to the cops?  One or both of his parents would get arrested, and Social Services wouldn't let him stay in that house, so where would he live?  He doesn't have any relatives in town that we know of, and they might not want him around either. Will this end with Dustin moving away?  I wish Billy could somehow talk his parents into letting Dustin live with them, but I doubt Little Miss Bible would go for it, even if it's the Christian thing to do.

Heads up!  Because of the awesome response to the last chapter, I'm going to do something I've never done before.  I'm going to release TWO chapters this week!  That's right.  I'm going to release chapter five Sunday night, and then chapter six on Friday.  Why?  Well, because I appreciate you!  But also because I'm super excited about these chapters, especially chapter six.  To be honest, these chapters go together pretty well anyway.  But yeah, I'm super-pumped and so grateful for the response for the story.  I love the comments.  I have a lot to learn as a writer, and the comments help me to become better at what I do.

So again, thanks for reading!

Want a preview of Friday's chapter?  Listen to the song "Hero of the Day" by Metallica.  It's one that inspired me greatly while writing WAR in general and the upcoming chapter in particular.  Here are the lyrics:

"Hero of the Day" by Metallica

Mama, they try and break me

The window burns to light the way back home
A light that warms no matter where they’ve gone
They’re off to find the hero of the day
But what if they should fall by someone’s wicked way?

Still the window burns
Time so slowly turns
Someone there is sighing
Keepers of the flames
Do you feel your name?
Did you hear your babies crying?

Mama, they try and break me
Still they try and break me

Excuse me while I tend to how I feel
These things return to me that still seem real
Now, deservingly, this easy chair
But the rocking's stopped by wheels of despair

Don’t want your aid
But the fist I've made
For years can’t hold or feel
No, I’m not all me
So please excuse me while I tend to how I feel

But now the dreams and waking screams
That ever last the night
So build the wall, behind it crawl
And hide until it’s light
So can you hear your babies crying now?

Still the window burns
Time so slowly turns
And someone there is sighing
Keepers of the flames
Did you feel your names?
Did you hear your babies crying?

But now the dreams and waking screams
That ever last the night
So build a wall, behind it crawl
And hide until it’s light
So can’t you hear your babies crying now?

Mama, they try and break me
Mama, they try and break me
Mama they try
Mama they try

Hmmm.

My first thought was that this is about Dustin, but then I remembered Billy still has that Metallica CD.  I get the feeling something really bad is about to happen to Billy, and it probably has to do with a certain asshole who shall remain nameless.  The boys are going to need each other more than ever, I hope they can put their differences aside.

Please don't hurt them too much. :(

Waiting between chapters is torture at this point lol.  The story is SOOOO good!!

You like characters in difficult or painful situations? Have you read anything by craftingmom?  ;-)

Or is it the long waits between chapters? Have you read any of @Timothy M.’s stories?  ;-)

Is that those giant cd things?  :P

Those ‘giant cd things’ were LaserDiscs! (I was given a player and bought a dozen or so discs – they were much cheaper than prerecorded video tapes at the time, under $20 vs $100+. But just like video tapes, they were analog, not digital.) LaserDisc was the father of the CD which later begat the DVD and Blu-Ray. Phillips developed the LaserDisc and Pioneer was its biggest proponent. Sony got together with Phillips to develop the CD.

LaserDisc’s two competitors were videotape and RCA’s SelectaVision CED videodisc (which was basically a high-tech phonograph record complete with a stylus). The biggest problems with LaserDisc were its physical size, lack of capacity (most movies required flipping the disc over partway through, but some required multiple discs and multiple changes), inability (on the much more common and cheaper of the two LD formats) to do a clean freeze-frame, the cost of the equipment, its inability to record (unlike VCRs), and a small market which limited the selection of movies available. As LaserDisc was heading towards its sunset, Combi players were introduced that could also play DVDs.

Phillips also developed the (Compact) Cassette – Dolby B noise-reduction made high quality sound possible on the format originally designed for dictation. Sony’s Walkman players helped push the cassette to market domination before the CD and digital downloads killed it.

Thus ends your history lesson for the day.
