To get some movement on the forum I'm reposting my comment on chapter 73 here, with some additions. *ahem*

Jesus Mary and Joseph, Don, chill the hell out!  But I don't see that happening just yet.  He's clearly one of those people - who equate being gay with some sort of vice.  He's acting like he just found out Robbie's on heroin ("any other place you use?") in boiling it down to just a deviant act that young people get into when they go off the rails.

We already know that he's a big deal in the community so he's probably freaked about when more people find out and what it will do to his reputation ("what will the neighbors think?! Oh no!") Factor in the surprise - if he's anything like Nicola he likes to know things and be in control  and the knowledge it was hidden for a while makes it very much not in his control -  you have a recipe for a bad reaction.  You can see how he tries to reassert that in the conversation.

What bothers me is that he seems to know on some level that this isn't going away.  He tells Robbie it's best to forget about Nathan and he "might even lead a normal and happy life."  That's admitting he understands that Robbie being gay might not change but he should just deal with it anyways and "be responsible."

I admit I didn't quite expect that level of outrage - more the passive aggressive kind.  That's not to say it would be any less damaging, of course.

About Dan's reaction - I understand it but regarding Nathan at least, I can't bring myself to feel that sorry for him.  Every guy goes through that - worrying their friend will forget about them when they get involved with someone.  We all survived it.

I'm glad Robbie's not feeling too guilty - like with the garden calls.  Seriously, did Dan expect them to ask for his blessing?  I can understand wishing he'd been told but it's hard.   There's no question of "deserving to know" like that nurse said at the hospital.  I said it before, I'll say it again - when coming out (or not) - say it with me now - you owe them nothing.

Tonight in Chapter 75 "The Fugitive'. Robbie, determined to leave home and with nowhere else to go, finds temporary accommodation with an old friend and in a place that he swore never to return to. He is safely out of Don's reach but it's a difficult decision which the 'The Cockney Canuck' may regret as the story heads into the final few chapters!

Rory? Nope, never swore not to return.

Fran? Nope, not out of Don’s reach.

I guess we know who that leaves!  ;-)

I still think it is Alex's. Alex and his brother seem to have an apartment that they use for their drug and sex antics, so Alex wants to be a friend without the sex (his words, not mine). I think he is heading there ;)

Yeah, this probably wasn't the best-kept secret in the world. Most people aren't keen on the idea of Robbie going there and I can understand why considering his past experiences and Alex's family are not the best people to be around. However, that is also part of the appeal for Robbie because he knows that they're not exactly going to co-operate if Don or the police come knocking on the door.

Dodger,

I love this story. Your writing style draws me in so easily....

Are you willing to share a bit more about the parallels between your story and your life?

Some of your comments suggest the story is mostly fiction, while some suggest otherwise.

Some questions in my mind are these:

Did your adoptive family have the same composition?

Did you over play the sympathy card like Robbie?

Did you come-out at 15 and have a sweet bf like Nathan?

Did you run away?

Did you get attacked?

etc, etc

Please don't feel obligated to answer. I respect your privacy. I am just being curious 0:)

If you don't want to share, I will fully understand :)

Thank you for your frank reply. It does satisfy my curiosity :)

And I am glad that your life as a teenager was not as eventful as in your story.

The culture shock must have been huge. Coming into such a big family would not have been easy. I try to imagine how I would have reacted had I been in your shoes. Not much better I am afraid! I hope your relationship with them is ok now and they forgave you for being a teenager ;)

Did /Do Robbie and Daniel ever get together

Every night (until Robbie ran away from home)! They’re brother/cousins who slept in separate beds in the same room. Oh, that’s not what you meant? Shame on you, they’re brother/cousins. That only seems to happen in porn (William Higgins did several moviesl back when he was still in Southern California featuring porn ‘brothers’, but there have been others who apparently were brothers who performed in separate scenes within the same movie – and I’ve seen a couple of identical twins who have ‘enjoyed’ each other which seems very narcissistic to me).  ;-)

The first time I went to Canada I was 17 and after getting the train in from Long Island I took the bus from NY to Toronto to spend 2 weeks with my uncle and his partner. Two words for my impression of Canada: clean, polite. Wished I could live there!

So the only reason I bring this up, is that I believe when an Author can make a story seem like reality, they have created a great thing.

First, the sad and bad news:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/cobourg-hospital-shooting-police-siu-1.4376921

The thing is, I immediately thought of Robbie!

Silly? Perhaps. Just like I said, it is a good story when it's characters seem so real.

Thanks, Steve, I was hesitant about whether I should like or be sad about this post. I chose to like your kind words but I am sad about what happened. The Northumberland Hills Hospital was the one that I used for the story and I believe the only hospital in Cobourg.

It's a tragic incident even if we're not sure of what happened yet. The SIU will investigate but as usual, that will take time.

Despite this, Cobourg remains, of course, a very safe town to live or visit. I don't live there but I do visit occasionally and it has provided a perfect setting for the story so I have a certain emotional attachment to the place.

Thanks for showing me; I didn't know about this. As usual with my head in the Cobourg sand.

I’m here to officially remind you that you have another story that’s currently in limbo. The annoying brat needs to cause some moe chaos. Maybe he should be witnessed peeing into a mop bucket or ‘accidentally’ get caught mooning the paparazzi!  ;-)

Maybe Billy can make a deal with Robbie! Billy can tell Nathan about Alex and Robbie can tell Brett that Billy knows who his father is! I’m sure they’d find it easier to tell someone else’s secret than their own. They’re both master-class procrastinators!  ;-)

And I made this suggestion on @jkwsquirrel’s W.A.R. Book 6: Commencement chapter 2 Comments.

Thanks for the reminder; although I hadn't actually forgotten and there is a reason for the delay. I wanted to finish writing it before posting any more chapters, but I can tell you that it's now very nearly complete. I'm quite excited with the way that it has turned out and I will be able to start posting regular chapters very soon. No peeing into mop buckets, but I can promise some equally distasteful stunts from the teenage delinquent as he gets himself ready for the Brit Awards.
