Out of all of the stories that you've read online, you might have noticed that there's a slight divide between the types of stories out there. There are stories that you read to read, and stories that you read for...um...'other' reasons. Hehehe!

No disrespect to either side, they're just different from one another. What's strange is that there doesn't seem to be any real set of 'rules' concerning what separates one side from the other. Nor are there any explaining those stories that walk the line in between. So this week's question is...

= What separates 'porn' from 'romance' in the stories you read and write? =

Is it length? Is it the 'amount' of sex? Is it cuddling up afterwards? Is it characterization? What is it?

When I started, every chapter, every story, every series, had HEAPS of sex in them. Nowadays I don't indulge in it nearly as much, going for sexual 'tension' and a love affair instead. Then again, I've read stories that have gone from a wonderful romance to hardcore porn so fast that I felt like I missed a chapter in between. So where, in your opinion, is the line, and how do you flirt with that line when writing sexual situations into your story?

The board is open! Let us all know what you think! :)

For me personally, characterisation and storyline is what separates the two kinds of stories. With 'porn' stories, there isn't usually much about the characters beyond a basic physical description, height, hair colour etc (and they're always hung too :D ) and the story such as it is, is merely a contrivance for the characters to get naked and do the wild thing. What sets 'romance' stories apart is that you get to know the characters a little, their thoughts and feelings, what motivates them to do the things they do, plus some story to bring them together beyond "hey I think you're hot, lets f**K". Even if they get to the sex straight away, going to the trouble of fleshing out the characters and giving them some background makes it more than just 'porn' to me.

and "Wham, Bam, thank you Sam" type stories tend to be much shorter. They tend to lack plot. They call those PWPs (Plot? What Plot? or Porn Without Plot)

I have written a few stories that I intended to be porn-like, but I still have more charactization then you'd generally get in the "hey I think you're hot, let's f**K" stories.

I have also tried breaking the mold a little in experiments in writing. My Colin Creevey and the Parliament Dreams spin-off... I pretty much start off with some graphic sex... then there is a long chapter afterwards without sex.

great question Comsie

If the biggest sex organ is the mind, then any story can be ehh rewarding...

If your reading a story and the author is setting up change in one of the characters, you've probably stumbled upon a Story story. While if everything the author knows about the character is told to you in twenty seconds, your in for a wild ride.

I have read some quick hitters, I'm going to go out on a limb and traidmark that real quick :P , that have managed to impress me with thier story. And I've read some worthwhile storys with bedroom scenes would have best served staying out of public eyes. I think it depends largley on the mindset of the audience, at the time its read.

Another derivative of this question is once you start with one type of story, can you switch it to the other. What does it take to turn that porn fest into a story you can maintain and keep fresh without disapointing thouse who wish you kept the action up. Or maybe your feeling friskey and want to give your standard a bit of a sex overdrive for a few chapters, and impress *somthing upon* your fans.

So wheres the post where we do our best to give Comical-ity a big head? This is my first post btw, ive e-maild Comical-ity but hes to busy to respond, or I refuse to believe one of the best living authors I've ever had the pleasure to stumble accross is ignoring me.

Don't worry Strangers he isn't ignoring you, he's just a busy man with many demands on his time and it might take a while but he'll get there.

Hehehe....me ignore an email? Nah, it doesn't happen fast! Of course there are flks who probably THINK I've forgotten, but chances are that it's still in my inbox somewhere! :)

I'm sorry it's taking so long. I was doing both emails and "Savage Moon" at one time, but had to just concentrate on the stories because it wasn't moving fast enough to meet my own personal deadline for it. Plus, I've had some inspiration for some other stories too. (Which you guys will see soon!) Kewl?

Hehehe, now don't go prnting out anything I write you! I'm a big idiot and it'll just look silly when you look back at it! :P I'll be talking to ya soon though! Promise. K?
