For just over a year now I have been writing short stories, mainly under the name Angela Mynah but sometimes under the name Moppy.

Three times now I have had stories rejected by nifty, twice on the grounds of 'Violent content' and once with a covering note saying that my story was just too depressing!

Another site took the first of the 'Violent' stories and accepted it (the second had yet to be written). The site owner was amazed that the story had been rejected.

Neither of the stories portrayed gratuatous violence and in neither case was the violence integral to a sexual act. In both cases the violence was essential to the storyline.

I am looking for a site that limits its censorship to matters of sexual taboos rather than rejecting a story just because it's too sad in chapter 1.

I regret that starting my own site is not an option.

I don't censor anything but picture porn here. Though I do have a subjective measure... contact me via PM.

Gee, that's surprising to me. I wrote a couple of novels that had some fairly dark and violent overtones -- I had one attempted rape and also killed off three major characters in my first story (Groovy Kind of Love), and then had blackmail, a violent murder, a prison rape (described but not shown), two suicides, then about 11 people murdered in a school shooting and another 10 wounded (Jagged Angel). Got about 2500 positive emails on the first one, maybe 800 on the second. Not a single problem with David at Nifty.

In my case, I think the key is not to dwell on the details of the violence, and make sure it all works with the story. To me, the story and characters come first. With all of that going on, I made damn well sure there was great affection and honesty throughout the story. Also, the people responsible for the violence were all caught and punished (or, in one case, they killed themselves, and in another, a murderer was killed).

As far as I know, I think the only stories anybody gets nervous about on the Net are those involving snuff, death, and/or torture. I stay far away from that, not only because it doesn't appeal to me, but also because I don't find it entertaining. There was a case where somebody who wrote a story about that was prosecuted somewhere in North America. The Liberterian in me objects to that, because I think nothing should be so forbidden that it can't be written about, but it's not something I would ever want to read myself.

I put a very short story up in the 'library' section here called "The chatroom predator" that was the first story I had bounced by Nifty for violence, Maybe I'm odd but I reckoned that the violence involved was understated as much as it could be, unless of course there was another reason for the censorship!

Evidently David has his good and bad days!

I'm as surprised as you are that you had those rejected.

May I just say that it's not just Grasshopper that writes good stories on IOMFATS. There are several other terrific stories coming along there. I've read a few myself, and Timmy hosts some good authors. I think Comicality would agree.

http://www.assgm.com is another good site, but the last time I checked, it wasn't up and running.

ASSGM.com has been converted to a pay site.

It has been replaced by ASSGM.net, which is also a Yahoo Group, ASSGM-list.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/assgm-list

There is also a Yahoo Group ASSGM-dis, which talks about the stories.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/assgm-dis

The replies I got to Message 212 in that Group (213 & 214) tell about some of the changes.

http://www.awesomedude.com/index.htm

A showcase of quality gay fiction primarily dealing with teens, featuring established and brand new authors.

I started at Nifty and was (many moons ago) solicited by GA to come here and at the time I turned them down. (Why is irrelevant -- that was the past). I found Dude and soon AwesomeDude was born. Bottom line is: I'm hosted at AwesomeDude and second the recommendation. I'm also presently one of the forum mods over there.

CodeysWorld http://www.codeysworld.com/ Is another site where you can find some of my stories. This site has very specific requirements as the target audience skews younger. I'm currently the forum mod over at CW.

The Doghouse http://www.dabeagle.com is the other one I would recommend. I'm also hosted here. Beagle is the sole mod. While he doesn't update nearly as often there is some FINE stuff here.

I allow my stories only to be hosted at sites where I trust the management and after a discussion about my goals as an author and how they match those of the site. I'm picky. I'd rather nobody read what I write than compromise its integrity.

I used to post at Nifty and support them financially. I don't anymore. I have issues with the site's terms and conditions now. I won't detail them. But the fact they even read your story shocks me because the stuff I've seen posted lately indicates they really don't even LOOK at the file to see if it contains valid data much less read it.

Violence is tricky. I have one VERY violent story. Violent to the point I made the sites interested in it read it and then write me before I'd release a final copy for posting. It's important I be considerate of the sites I use, too. Violence alone isn't bad -- it depends why it's in the story. My particular story (Halfway to Thirty) details a psychopath and his victim's interactions. I like character studies :)
