Dixie came from a farm 6 1/2 years ago. Other than hooves and bones to chew on, she has never played with any toy we bought her. Just caught her sitting there with a rubber squeaky and looking unsure.

This has to be one of those feel good moments. There is always hope. Better still that it happened now at Christmas time. Time heals all, but love is the secret ingredient.
(maybe not so secret)
She plays, just with people and other dogs. She was 4 months when we got her, past the age of socialization. I can kind of see her point of view, it's more fun to chase or be chased than chew on a rubber toy.
She's well loved and quite spoilt for it. It was just amazing to look up and see her with a toy, even if she looked like she didn't think she should have it.

Awww, she's so cute!!! I hope this is just the beginning of her playing with all her toys now.

I once adopted a dog that never played with toys. I suspect because she came from a home with small children and never had toys and was taught to leave the kids toys alone.

careful what you ask for...LOL
We received a really skid-dish dachshund that took almost a full year to get acclimated to the household. at two years she finally figured out what stuffed animals with squeakers were for.
for ten years, she would bring her toy in, sit down in front of me, and squeak the daylights out of it till I took it from her and threw it...repeat continuously till dinner time, continue 20 minutes after meal till 9P.M.(bed time)...Dang, I sure miss those days
The min pin/chihuahua mix finally laid in his new bed - because I put all his squeaky toys into it. He's laying there squeaking one of his Christmas presents. It does get annoying, but I would miss it.
