DNA Day was instituted as a one-time celebration in the United States by a proclamation of the US Congress in 2002. Double Helix April 25 was chosen as the day to acknowledge the contribution of genetics because on this day in 1953, scientists James Watson, Francis Crick, and their colleagues published the double helix structure of DNA in the journal, Nature. Worldwide Celebration While DNA Day was first commemorated in the United States in 2003, it is now celebrated around the world. In the US, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) is at the helm of organizing celebrations for the day. The day, now run by Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Foundation, encourages parents to take their children to work so that they can understand the meaning of work-life balance and pride in one's work. Without Gender Limitations According to the Foundation’s website, the day “encourages girls and boys to dream without gender limitations and to think imaginatively about their family, work and community lives”. The day is celebrated on a Thursday so that kids can share their experiences in school the next day. First for Girls The day was first created by Gloria Steinem and the Ms. Foundation for Women in 1993 as Take Our Daughters to Work Day in recognition of the fact that young girls were often excluded from certain professions and had limited job opportunities. The unofficial holiday aimed to give girls the opportunity to see different workspaces and environments. In 2003, boys were also included in the celebration of the day. How to Celebrate? Thank you for letting me know. I'll leave a note at the top of this chapter to read Chapter 12. When I was scheduling Chapter 12 to be published I must have accidentally hit a button and posted it sooner than I wanted. Either way Chapter 12 doesn't seem to be showing up for you guys. Also GA has been kind of glitchy on my end. Small things like it always pasting things in bold and then I have to italicize the thoughts after I paste. Have you had any issues like that? Anyone else?
