Despite what the media likes to portray, rifles are used in a very minute number of crimes. In a nation where over half the population owns rifles, shotguns, and various types of handguns, you would think that crime would be worse than it is. It is generally known that over 20 million AR-15 style semi-automatic firearms are owned by us civilians. Assault Rifle has a very specific definition. They are used by the military and may fire fully automatic (depending upon the selector switch). After 1986, civilians could no longer purchase such weapons. Assault Weapon is a political term and means whatever a state legislature wants it to mean. Almost always semi-automatic rifles of all types. Pistols and handguns on the other hand... Those are what our police are most often confronted with, sorry to say. Sorry to be on such a rant, but 170 million Americans never committed a firearms crime today, despite how the Media portrays things.
