    Chapter 36

I too ran the mean streets of life in the country to fall and pick myself back up again. Essell... well, let's just say there's more than what's on the surface going on with him, and that's a lot!

    Chapter 14

Uh-huh. Real life is going goooooood!   Absolutely. I love when couples share interests, but I also know it's important that they have separate ones. And different personalities definitely make sparks!  Yes! And fast is relatively, right? Especially considering the dramatic emotion of how they met. It was, and long-term is where I'd love to see them even though they're still 'new'. They just feel comfortable to me, like they have it in them to work things out.  Thanks

Awesome chapter. It's great to see the weekend ending well. Scottie is now having sleepovers at Jax's, with some great wake up calls.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this chapter. Scottie and Jax seem to be each others ying and yang, different, but very compatible! The weekend getaway was a success with "benefits"!  Scottie quickly learned Jax does not care for any woman fondling over him. And now, garage space!!  Love it !!   Great read Cia - thank you!! David

Thanks, David! And yeah, I wouldn't stand for that either so I don't blame Jax. Maybe Scottie needs to care more. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter.

    Chapter 13

Gotta have hiccups. No day can be perfect, as much as their memory will probably just make that into a funny aside.  Absolutely! Boundaries are so important, and they've definitely learned a lot about each other on this trip inside and out.  Ups and down, that's life right? Jax and Scottie definitely are learning more about each other with this trip just like they needed to. But where else could they go?  Daily life... yikes!  Bimbo... *snorts* I love that word!

Sounds like an enjoyable day, despite the hot tub hiccup.  And they're already making plans for the next trip.  :)

Her near desperate aggression was funny, but not for Jax. Scotty now knows Jax's boundaries in that area and won't make the same mistake again.

Well a trip can be tiring anyway, besides... who doesn't like "resting" with someone as sexy as Jax or Scottie?   Yes! Everything is more work, which you don't realize if you haven't done it before. I wanted to make this very real. I'm glad that came through. I went on vacation once with a friend who was in a wheelchair.  It's exhausting pushing someone around when you're not used to it.  I agree with Scottie about the perks though... we got to board the airplane first and pick the best seats.  lol  Thankfully, I had a couple of other people to help, so it wasn't too much on any one person.  We had an amazing time :) Jax and Scottie are quite comfortable with each other.  Now I'm waiting to see what wrench gets thrown in the works :P

Yay, another person who has personal experience who this resonated correctly with. I'm always so glad when I hit the nail on the head. I've been the person in the wheelchair, so I've been there from that point of view, but I wanted to share from Scottie's POV so I'm glad it's "right." A wrench? In the works? Meeee.....?

While Jax wouldn't agree I think his being in a wheelchair brings a level of equality to their budding relationship. I like Jax but I suspect that before the accident he was "a large and in charge" kind of guy. Scotty is getting the chance to show just how capable he is. Sitting in the chair Jax gets to watch Scotty being Scotty and he likes what he sees.

I agree with Scotty. I've driven in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Tampa, Charleston, Milwaukee and Savannah and didn't enjoy any of it.

Jax does come across as very bossy, doesn't he? But he is an in-charge guy in his life for sure. It's good for him to let Scottie take the lead, who is very independent in his own right. Driving in a big city, yes, SUCKS!

I enjoyed watching Jax and Scottie through the lenses of your writing. It must be hard for Jax to let Scottie do the caring and lifting. Yet, it has its compensations in letting him watch Scottie without any other distractions. In the meantime, healing marches on. Can’t wait for Jax to walk on his own again.

I bet Scottie is just hoping that Jax won't walk away when he can though....

Kisses are soooo good. Scottie's independent, but he's also very cerebral. Those types of men can sometimes get caught up in their head and worry TOO much about things.

I too have been on the pushing end of a wheelchair carrying a friend and it is very exhausting!  The chemistry between Scottie and Jax is definitely there and improving albeit at a snails pace!  Love the story Cia and, as always, your writing is superb! Thank you, David.

Sorry, I'm all about the slow burn sometimes. ;) Sex is great in adult stories, but sometimes authors let characters get injured and then fall into bed without even thinking about the effect pain and pills have on the body. It's hard to get sexy when you hurt or meds shut your body down. Having been crippled up before, and having a past career with medical experience, I try to make sure I don't forget that knowledge when I write characters with any injuries. (I can't even tell you how hard I scoffed at a story I read once off GA where a character with a broken nose gave a blow job within hours... yeah RIGHT!)

Thanks for sticking with me and the story, everyone! More Jax and Scottie to come, I promise!

    Chapter 10

Jax is a grumblepuss, but Scottie definitely knows how to put him in his place. Glad you are enjoying the 'show' so far!  A trip is always a good start to see how well people work out together. Harder to hide all the ins and outs that way!  Scottie definitely can hold his own. He's able to deal with anything Jax can dish out... but there's only so much a person can take! Jax needs to stop and consider the damage overdoing his therapy does, it's a case of too much of a good thing. Listen to the therapist, that's why you have one.

While it might seem a bit cruel I'd say that Jax needing time to heal is a silver lining. It forces him to spend quiet time with Scotty in turn allowing them to get better acquainted then he did his past guys. There are times getting physical can hinder a deeper connection.

The roadtrip is an excellent opportunity but will Jax chafe at needing Scotty to help with the mundane caregiving he requires. Helping him with his shorts after showering could prove interesting.

My stepbrother's stepson (how's that for a convoluted connection) works as a server at the Space Needle. I wonder if Steve'll wait on them.

Yes, but I bet every therapist knows those patients who don't listen... and they're usually the types in very physical jobs. They don't like sitting still for long. Getting Jax away will definitely help. And that's so fun that you have a personal connection to the setting area! :D

We're left wondering at the date of the hapless familiar. Can he be saved and given a new life after such an ordeal?

What a consuming metaphor for this year, @Cia—& indeed, the past 4 years. The depravity and inhumanity that has sometimes felt like demon hoards ravaging our world is tempered by the goodness of those special souls who have stood firm — and love. Seeing love banish the shadows from Callim & Maris, if only for a short time, was a gift for the season. Thanks, @Cia!

The love was definitely meant to offset the harshness of the rest of the story--after all, without light, there can be no shadow. Unrelenting pain and suffering wouldn't have the same impact without their love to compare it to. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment, Dr. John!

This is dark fantasy at its finest!  Callim may appear cold and unfeeling, but he probably feels each loss more keenly than anyone.  At least he has Maris to temporarily banish the shadows from his soul.  I'd love to read more set in this world, but I totally understand that this is probably a one-off antho story.  And I totally could not tell you were watching military dramas when you came up with this...  :P  It's funny because my stories lately have all been inspired by YouTube videos.  🤣

LOL, yes, I don't always call out my inspiration but it's not a theme I usually play around with, so it was different for me to focus on. Soldiers have such a dichotomy; they see such darkness and suffering, but they can also be the cause of pain and death too. Those in command have the hardest job, and they see and feel so much but also must stand alone. Who knows, maybe I will explore Callim and Maris' future more in another story? After all, the familiar situation was left completely unanswered. ;) Thanks for commenting!

Then again, learning your universe isn't quite as ordered as you expect it to be is a shock many young people go through.

    Chapter 8

Yep, no more hinting around. But moving in... that's a little fast!      LOL @drpaladin @dughlas @Daddydavek I like to make sure my stories feel "real" and awkward is something I think we can all relate to sometimes. When things go smoothly or it's all easy to figure out for the characters to suss each other out, I think that just doesn't feel true. We've probably all had those moments of "Well, are they/aren't they" in some fashion or another when looking for romance.

Well the penny dropped and we now know they are interested in each other and want to spend more time together.  I wonder if Jax will move in with Scottie or vice versa?

Well, that was about as awkward coming out as you can get with clothes on. At least they know they like each other now and are making some plans. Max's disabilities give Scotty a unique chance to show his caring side, something which normally wouldn't be easy with Jax.

The strongest thing these two have in common is their love for the outdoors. Add in the mutual attraction and individual strengths which compliment and supports the others weaknesses and you can see a winning combination.

Yes, a major theme in this story was the setting in Washington, of course, so the characters are strongly outdoor-centric. It's a great link to bring them together.

Jax will definitely bring a lot to Scottie's  attention! And, while I tried to make this story feel real, sometimes people just click. I like to think these guys click, even with the drama of their meeting.

Yay! You know how much I love to hear I provided strong visuals. I'm so glad you enjoyed this chapter. And since I gave Scottie my own views on soup and ice cream, I'm sooo with you. LOL

Great chapter!  My thoughts are Jax is not used to rescuees returning to give thanks and then returning again with gifts!!  I'm thinking the ice between Jax and Scottie has melted and maybe giving way to more softer encounters.  One can only hope!  I love this story - thanks Cia!

Having family people who have worked in the rescue field, I know it's a fact most of the time they don't get to learn what happens to people they help, much less get thanked by them. When I was pried out of a car after a head on collision, a firefighter crouched inside our crushed 2 door car (read TINY before it was folded like an accordion) to stay with me for the entire hour it took them to get me out. A few months later when I graduated from a walker to crutches, we went back with cookies and cocoa as a holiday treat with a thank you card when that shift was on duty. I admit I totally pulled on that for some inspiration in this scene.

Definitely not!!   Well, you know... firefighter, photographer, met in a blaze. How can that not be a hot combo?  Young and believing in his own skills, yes. Entirely oblivious to the danger? Right? It doesn't seem to be very "attacky" but it does have a lot of defenses.
