Hmm, compound words. Bit of a nightmare Even for native English speakers They (including this particularly ugly word) start off as two words, in this case the first (sometimes called an “adjectival” noun or, more properly I think, a noun “adjunct”) modifying the second to create a “noun phrase” (“Stage 1”) with a distinct meaning. In time these may (not always though… eeek!) become hyphenated (“Stage 2”) and some - like this monster - evolve even further into a single compound word (“Stage 3” - ye gods!). Maybe English is the easiest language to learn badly, but difficult to learn expertly?
