  1. I got an e-mail today stating it was my 22nd anniversary for my account with Yahoo.

I don't remember when I got my Hotmail account, but it was well before 1998....

I got my first email account in January 1996, linked to a CIX conferencing account, but didn't get full Internet access until a couple of years later. Telephone connections using a modem could be quite expensive so I used to set my computer to download messages early in the morning when phone calls were cheaper.

  2. 11:09 p.m. Saturday, October 3, 2020.

A momentous day for our family as my daughter got married.  It was a relatively small, but beautiful wedding and her two year old son tried to steal the show.  He wanted to be in every photo shoot and managed to be in quite a few.  My daughter looked radiantly beautiful, my son-in-law looked awe struck and my granddaughter who was one of the bridesmaids looked sophisticated and older than her seventeen years.

For all those who had their weddings cancelled or postponed due to COVID, I can't imagine your loss.

It was a fun time for all and it came together because of exceptional planning and a lot of work!

I'm glad the wedding went well. Congrats to the happy family.

Congrats, Dave, to you and your family. It sounds wonderful!

    4. Kitt

May she have as many happy anniversaries as there are days in a year. Congrats.

One more event to muck up 2020. Is this year as momentous as 1968?

  3. An absolutely gorgeous day today and I got the yard work done!

  4. Just wanted to add my congrats!  In a strange year, your team proved tenacious!

    1. Brayon

Thanks Daddydavek. It was a great redemption over last year.

  5. On my birthday, I can only hope and pray this coming year is better than the last one...

      Have a wonderful day.

I've noticed several birthday announcements in this parts recently. My own occurred last week but I've got to the stage where I'm unsure whether to celebrate how many years I've survived or to shudder at the total. I can remember fifteen British Prime Ministers and 14 US Presidents.

    3. Daddydavek

I can only remember 13 U.S. Presidents.  I can remember watching Queen Elizabeth II coronation on TV but don't remember her father.

    4. dughlas

The point gentlemen is that you remember.

  6. It's been a hectic week.  School started with remote learning and so we are baby sitting the grandson again which is fine, but a bit much when it's 45 to 55 hours a week....

We also buried a dear friend.  Her son and my son were the same age and we knew them since the kids were in kindergarten which was more than 35 years ago.  She developed cervical cancer and fought the good fight for more than 3 years but it was relentless and took her from us.  RIP Mrs. MJ.

We are also planning a small wedding in October for our daughter (the mother of my 2 year old grandson and granddaughter who is now a senior in highschool) and we have to be flexible as who knows what the rules will be the first weekend in October....

My son died just a year ago on September 7th and this year has aged my wife and I more than any other.  We ordered a headstone some time ago, but were informed they might get it made and set by Thanksgiving.  Evidently the quarry where they get the stone was shut down for almost three months due to the pandemic and they still are not up to full speed....

Finally, my baseball Cardinals are under .500 and without fans in the stands, the games are a little surreal...

I am so sorry to read of your losses. Warm hugs to you and your family, and a warm congratulations for your daughter and husband to be. ❤️

  7. Storms came through last night, but not nearly as bad here as further north and in Chicago.

      Awesome photo 📷

  8. The splashdown in the gulf reminded me of all the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo splashdowns in the 60's and very early 70's.  Of course then it was very grainy video in black and white.  I was astonished they didn't have better camera's and better uplinks to transmit better quality video today.  And yes I was watching on May 5, 1961 when Alan Shepard went up for a short suborbital mission and splashed down in a Mercury Capsule.

    1. drpaladin

Now days almost everyone is carrying around a better quality video camera in their phone than available in those days.

    2. dughlas

I was too young, age 3, to remember Alan Shepard's flight but I remember gathering in the school gym to watch other launches and splashdowns on tv.

    3. Daddydavek

      @dughlas...yeah, I was a teenager.

  9. "...take a sad song and make it better"   Just read a great article in Rolling Stone about the Beatles song "Hey Jude" which has some insight into that hectic time.  It was featured in the pocket and is from August 2018 which was the fiftieth anniversary of the song.

    Here is the link:

  10. Just read a really thoughtful article on Patrick Mahomes, the KC quarterback.  It was on the start page for

Duckduckgo and it was on GQ of all places.

Finally read it. Thank you for sharing. Now I gotta work Mahomes, Kelce, and Post Malone into a story. I feel a beer pong game coming on.

Let's hope he's not a one-hit wonder, I'd love to see him as successful and well liked as Brady who I can't stand.

  12. Shocking news about the fire at St. Pierre and Paul Cathedral in Nantes due to arson!

Yes, brings back memories from Notre Dame just last year.

  13. My stargazer lilies are in full bloom in a bed full of  marigolds.  Here is one.

The little sprinkles you see on the green leaves is ground pepper.  I have to sprinkle them every night to keep the deer from munching on them.  I used to use a deer and rabbit repellent spray but it smelled so bad it ruined the fragrance of the flowers.  Pepper seem to work if you use it liberally and you can gently shake the stems of the plant to get it off when you want to cut some and bring them inside for display in a vase.

Love those but hate the pollen. They stain the crap out of fingers while removing the stems. Thank goodness for paper towels. The perfume's intoxicating.

  14. Got the grass and yard work done this morning.  The temp started out at 77F  at 8:00 a.m. with a feel like temp of 86.  I'm afraid to look at it now, but I sweated buckets and have been drinking quarts of water!   I finished at 10:30 and am still cooling down slowly before getting into a cool shower!

    1. Headstall

      Be careful, Dave!

    2. Ron

Remember, Dave, you're a Daddy -- no longer chicken.  <---- Maybe only us 'older' guys get the reference! ;)

    3. Daddydavek

Yeah, I'm certainly no chicken....I did take several water breaks.  The current temp at 6:20 pm was 93 with a heat index of 99...about where it has been for several hours.  It looks like we will have high temps in the 90.s for the next 7 days.

  15. Well it's hot as a firecracker and a good excuse to stay cool at home!

Happy Independence Day Dave! I'm staying in too... way to hot and humid.

  16. So I have a fourteen year old dog that is scared of fireworks and I live in a neighborhood where most everyone has stayed home for months and all local fireworks displays have been cancelled.  Fireworks are readily available along the interstate highway just outside the county line and it seems many of my neighbors have decided that since there are no local big displays, that they need to compensate and have their own.  The "fun" has started.   I expect it will be crazy around here for the better part of a week. I'm just glad we had drenching rains yesterday and the lawns and foliage is pretty damp...and so is the carpet inside by my patio door. Ugh!

    1. wildone

      Do they make doggy earmuffs?

    2. Ron

Dave, this firework issue has been going on in greater Boston -- my neighborhood has been plagued with continual boom-boom, bangs -- for about six weeks, now. It hasn't been fun, I can assure you -- every evening and late into the a.m. on a daily basis. I'm very glad not to have to deal with a pet's fear of the sounds.

    3. ancientrichard

When we lived in the big city we were plagued by fireworks, especially in the Autumn and early Winter, from Halloween to Chinese New Year with numerous celebrations in between, but in a small town it's quite peaceful, with just a few bangs on Nov 5.

Our aged cat is deaf, so she doesn't notice.

  18. Sunny day with the haze from the dust cloud noticeable.  Sunset should be spectacular!

    1. Daddydavek

Update at 8:30 p.m. local time which is sunset.  The Saharan dust dissipated in our area and the sunset was no more than usual.

  19. In anticipation of Father's Day I've been reflecting on my own who died a little more than 57 years ago.  I was fifteen and in the car riding "shotgun" when the car crash changed my world.  I still grieve that I never got to know him as an adult and that I had to grow up so quickly as I have five younger siblings.  In retrospect I know it made me hone into my responsibilities and the necessity of being a good provider.

When my own children had complaints or concerns I too often advised them to 'suck it up' and deal with it instead of getting them to talk about it and find some resolution. I know most dads are not perfect and I have my flaws, but my kids know and knew I loved them and that I would help if they needed anything.  I am still processing my grief for my son who died last September and expect that process to last the rest of my days.

So while we are making plans to celebrate tomorrow, I just want to encourage everyone to do their best and remember forgiveness is a blessing which  we all need.  And that includes forgiving ourselves.
