July 14, 1801 Brentwood, UK Granger pulled his horse from a trot to a walk, a move that his mother mirrored, as they slowly meandered down the road leading to the village where his tenants lived. The Duchess of Suffolk had suggested this outing to try to distract her son, because while Granger had tried to remain impassive when he’d told her about Calvert, she was perceptive enough to know his anxiety was expansive. They slowly walked their horses through the village, th

Poor Ian. It’s hard to have so many expectations at just five years of age. He may have the smarts, but he doesn’t have the maturity yet, as witnessed b6 his meltdown about learning the technicalities of the language of music. I don’t quite get the determination to make Gaea like Earth II. Things had gone so wrong there, I would think they would want a completely fresh start. Name your cities and locations after places on Earth I. That’s fine. But make a break and make a new society with more care for each other and the world on which you are now living!

April 21, 2004 Escorial Palo Alto, CA Will I opened the door to find my father there with Jake behind him, as if he were Jake’s human shield. “Welcome home,” Dad said, and embraced me warmly. I thought it was nice that he’d taken off his tie and shed his jacket, as if to announce that he was no longer Mr. Corporate America. “I missed you,” I said warmly. Dad looked at Travis, then at Jake, then back at Travis, pretty much just like I had, then finally kicked h

April 21, 2004 Escorial Palo Alto, CA Will The big Escalade limo drove up the stately drive and stopped at the porte cochère to deposit its passengers. I got out and smiled, happy to be home, while Travis followed me, pausing to stare at this massive house. “This place is like the Buck Mansion,” he said. My first reaction was to point out that Escorial was way nicer than the Buck Mansion, but I managed to stop myself from doing that and thus sparking an argument over

April 24, 2004 The Beverly Hills Hotel Beverly Hills, CA Will It was hard to imagine a bigger bombshell could be dropped into this group: Travis’s grandfather, Tom Buck, was his father, not his grandfather. How totally messed up was that? He’d been sleeping with his daughter-in-law! I tried to conjure up a mental picture of him, curious as to whether he looked like Travis or Jake, but he’d always had a beard, and that seemed to dominate my memory of him. I looked over at

April 24, 2004 The Beverly Hills Hotel Beverly Hills, CA Will “Waves rocked today!” Travis said, and high fived me. We’d gotten down here in time to spend a couple of hours in the water and still make it to the hotel and get ready for the big party tonight. We were sitting in Grand and Stef’s suite, enjoying some pre-dinner cocktails. “Makes me remember what I liked best about living down here,” Dad said. He impulsively looked down at his Blackberry and freaked out.

The name of the holiday comes from the phrase Sorry Charlie, popular in the United States. According to some, the phrase comes from a Starkist Tuna commercial in the 1970s. Tasty Tuna In the commercial, the main character, Charlie the Tuna, believes he has good taste and wants to be caught by the Tuna company. The company, however, rejects Charlie by attaching a note to a fish hook that says “Sorry Charlie.” The reason Charlie is rejected by the tuna company is because the company prefers to catch a tuna that tastes good, and not a tuna that has good taste. Rejection Phrase The phrase is now is commonly used as a response to someone who has experienced a rejection. It can be sometimes be seen as an uncaring response. How to Celebrate? Think back on all the rejections in your life – academic, professional and personal – and spend the day reflecting on what you learned from each of them. Treat yourself because you didn’t let any rejections let you down. Did You Know... ...that some schools of tuna fish swim alongside dolphins as a way to protect themselves from sharks and other predatory sea life? *** The college football player knew his way around the locker room better than he did the library. So when my husband's co-worker saw the gridiron star roaming the stacks looking confused, she asked how she could help. "I have to read a play by Shakespeare," he said. "Which one?" she asked. He scanned the shelves and answered, "William." *** Giving a sermon one Sunday, I heard two teenage girls in the back giggling and disturbing people. I interrupted my sermon and announced sternly, "There are two of you here who have not heard a word I've said." That quieted them down. When the service was over, I went to greet people at the front door. Three adults apologized for going to sleep in church, promising it would never happen again. *** We live less than a quarter-mile from the high school, but my son proudly drove there in a car he bought with his own money. A typical first car, it had lots of little problems and was sometimes slow to start. One morning I was surprised to see it still in front of the house, so after school I asked him about it. "I had to get to school early," he said, "so I just ran." *** During an attack of laryngitis I lost my voice completely for two days. To help me communicate with him, my husband devised a system of taps. One tap meant "Give me a kiss." Two taps meant "No." Three taps meant "Yes"—and 95 taps meant "Take out the garbage." *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** sandrewn

We planned to go to a local office for a replacement, but then we discovered that our registration had expired. The new one was at home in a pile of mail. After much thought, we came up with a solution. Taping a sign over the empty license-plate space on the rear of the vehicle, we made the eight-hour trip home safely. Not a single state trooper stopped us, but many passing motorists took great pains to honk and wave at us. Our sign read "Just Married!" *** As a fund-raiser, the chemistry club designed and sold T-shirts. Written across the front were our top "Stupid Chemistry Sayings": • Have yourself a Merry Little Bismuth • What do you do with dead people? Barium • You stupid boron! • We hope your year is very phosphorous. *** My father began teaching business classes at the local prison through a community college. On his first night of class, he started a chapter on banking. During the course of his lecture, the subject of ATMs came up, and he mentioned that, on average, most machines contain only about $1,500 at a given time. Just then a man in the back raised his hand. "I'm not trying to be disrespectful," he told my father, "but the machine I robbed had about $5,000 in it." *** Touring Ireland's countryside with a group of travel writers, we passed an immaculate cemetery with hundreds of beautiful headstones set in a field of emerald green grass. Everyone reached for their cameras when the tour guide said the inventor of the crossword puzzle was buried there. He pointed out the location, "Three down and four across." *** My wife, Dolores, never quite got the hang of the 24-hour military clock. One day she called the orderly room and asked to speak with me. The person who answered told her to call me at the extension in the band rehearsal hall. "He can be reached at 4700, ma'am," the soldier advised. OMG all those Tim Tams and Coke consumed by Tyron and Bradley. Clearly neither has a problem with the scourge of many teens (and was certainly the scourge of my teenage years), acne. I know it is very un-Australian @Paladin I have never cared for Tim Tams. Now Mint Slice, they are a whole different kettle of fish. I rarely each such food now, but still enjoy chocolate with 95% dark chocolate my guilty pleasure. And as for that enormous breakfast eaten by Chris, Andre and Jamie, suffice to say I am vegetarian. A very light chapter, possibly before heavier chapters involving the trial of Ollie and Andre's rapist. I hope there is no confrontation between Ollie and his mother. If she dares to harass or blame him in person I hope she quickly finds herself persona non grata.

I think I was at that show! When I think of midriffs, I am reminded of the half-shirts we used to wear back in the 70s-80s for sports. Noah Hathaway or Boxy from the original Battlestar Galactica(78) or Atreyu from Neverending Story(84) rocking a half-shirt and showing off his midriff. I never missed an episode! -
horsefly - Word of the Day - Mon Jan 29, 2024
CarlHoliday commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
The community of Horsefly (estab. 1859) lies on the shore of the Horsefly River in the Cariboo Country of Central British Columbia, Canada. The Horsefly River does not directly drain the waters of Horsefly Lake where you can do outdoorsy activities at Horsefly Lake Provincial Park. The Horsefly River drains into Quesnel (don't pronounce the "s") Lake at Horsefly Bay. Oh, and between Horsefly Lake and the upper course of Horsefly River there is Horsefly Mountain. To get to all those Horseflies, leave the Trans-Canada Highway in Cache Creek on BC Highway 97. In 150 Mile House, leave Highway 97 on Likely Road, and then Horsefly Road. If you're planning on visiting all those Horseflies, I recommend packing OFF! Insect Repellant in your luggage. -

Dentists tend to get a bad rap, but they are essential for keeping us and our communities healthy. Old Job Dentistry is one of the oldest medical specialization. Oral health has always been a source of trouble for people and a subject matter of great interest to physicians throughout human history. The first dentist in recorded history - Hesy Ra - is thought to have lived and practiced his dentistry in Egypt around 2600 BCE. Barbers as Dentists Before dentistry became an organized professional branch of medicine, barbers were part-time dentists, usually entrusted with the unsavory job of extracting teeth. Modern dentistry emerged during the late 17th century, though the lack of anesthesia and sophisticated equipment made going to the dentist a painful proposition. Today, dentists are an important part of any country's medical and health system. In addition to caring for people with tooth problems, dentists also perform surgeries to correct misaligned teeth and other problems affecting the jaw and the oral cavity. How to Celebrate? If you haven’t been to see your dentist in a while, use this day to make an appointment with them. Thank your dentist by sending them a thank you note or maybe some home baked goods – just make sure there isn’t too much sugar in them. Did You Know… …that the world's first dental school was opened by Dr. John M. Harris in Bainbridge, Ohio, on February 21, 1828? *** While I was serving as a juror, I chanced to share the elevator one morning with a visiting judge. He asked me where the jurors parked, and I informed him that we had our own lot several blocks away. Then it occurred to me that he might be having a problem finding a place for his car, so I continued, "but, Your Honor, they have a special place reserved for judges down below." "Yes," he said dryly, "I'm sure they do." *** Phil was driving down a country road late one night when he felt a big thud. He got out of the car and looked around, but the road was empty. Since there was nothing else to be done, Phil drove on home. In the morning the sheriff was standing at his doorstep. "You're under arrest for hitting a pig and leaving the scene," the lawman told him with a frown. "Please come with me." Phil couldn't believe his ears. "But how could you possibly know that's what happened?" he asked. "It wasn't hard," the sheriff replied. "The pig squealed." *** One afternoon I was walking on a trail with my newborn daughter, chatting to her about the scenery. When a man and his dog approached, I leaned into the baby carriage and said, "See the doggy?" Suddenly I felt a little silly talking to my baby as if she understood me. But just as the man passed, I noticed he reached down, patted his dog and said, "See the baby?" *** My Dad's favorite joke is indelible: Joe is a new man on a construction crew. The first day on the job, he opens his lunch box and mumbles, “Oh no, peanut butter!” The next day, “Peanut butter again!” This goes on for days, until another worker says, “Why don’t you ask your wife to make a different lunch?” Joe replies, “I’m not married. I make my own lunch.” Whether or not anyone else laughed, Dad certainly did. *** *** *** *** *** Which is why you should always keep your towel handy, I know I do. *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** Meanwhile...in Japan *** *** *** *** *** sandrewn
