    Chapter 99

April 25, 2004 The Pacific Coast Highway Pacific Palisades, CA Will “Nice that traffic is light,” Travis said. “I’m usually fighting it going the other way.” It was 8:00 in the morning, and we were heading to Malibu so Travis and I could get situated, and so we could surf. “That’s because it’s Sunday, dipshit,” I said, giving him crap. “Whatever,” he said, which made Stef smirk because he’d said it just like I did. “I am wondering how you are planning t

Also sometimes known as Festival of Smoke and Mirrors Day, this unofficial holiday is celebrated annually on March 29. Smoke and mirrors is an English language phrase that is used to describe things and actions that are deceptive, manipulative, or lack complete explanation. Act of Illusion Usually associated with illusionists and magicians, it is thought that the phrase originated from the classic act of illusion where a magician makes objects or people appear or disappear by using smokes and mirrors as a distraction. Because of this, the phrase is often used to refer to actions that distract from the reality or cover up the truth. Things That Do Not Exist In computing, the term smoke and mirrors is often used to refer to programs that seem to exist, but in reality do not. Mirror Magic Magic as a performance art has been used to entertain people around the world since ancient times. In smoke and mirror magic tricks, magicians create optical illusions by diverting a spectator's attention away from the actions that create the "magic". Mirrors are also often used to create illusions by manipulating light and using the properties of reflection and refraction. Some of the popular magic tricks using mirrors include the Sphinx and the Vampire. In both tricks, mirrors are used to hide the object, usually the head of a person. How to Celebrate? Learn some magic tricks and entertain your friends and colleagues. Preferably try to use smoke and mirrors in your tricks. Spend some time learning about how to achieve illusions using mirrors. Did You Know... ...that the earliest mirrors used by humans were bodies of dark, still water? *** While on vacation, my wife and I stopped for lunch at a diner. We sat at the counter, right next to the grill. The cook was a young man who was very busy flipping pancakes. Every so often, he would stop and hit the grill with the handle of the spatula. Finally I asked him facetiously, "Does that improve the taste of the pancakes?" "No," he replied. "That keeps the handle from falling off." *** Searching in my library for two books by communications expert Deborah Tannen turned into an Abbott and Costello routine. "What's the first book?" the librarian asked. "That's Not What I Meant," I said. "Well, what did you mean?" "That's the title of the book," I explained. "Okay." She looked at me a little skeptically. "And the other book?" "You Just Don't Understand." "Excuse me?" I got both books. Eventually. *** Coincidences were flying when a man was arrested and charged with stealing a bird feeder from Cornell University's ornithology laboratory. According to the Associated Press, police charged James Buzzard, 44, who lives on Cardinal Drive in Ithaca, N.Y., with stealing the feeder from the lab on Sapsucker Woods Road. *** A friend living in an isolated Montana mining town suspected that she wasn't getting the best dental care. Her first trip to a competent dentist in Butte confirmed her suspicions. After a thorough examination the dentist asked but one question: "Been doing your own work?" *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** sandrewn

April 21, 2004 Escorial Palo Alto, CA Will I opened the door to find my father there with Jake behind him, as if he were Jake’s human shield. “Welcome home,” Dad said, and embraced me warmly. I thought it was nice that he’d taken off his tie and shed his jacket, as if to announce that he was no longer Mr. Corporate America. “I missed you,” I said warmly. The Tonto had paused her progress to allow us to ride the jet skis around, but the waves had started to pick up, and we had places to go, so after an hour, we’d hauled them back aboard. “Pussy,” I accused. “This is way warmer than the Pacific.” “Whatever,” he grumbled, then smiled. “Time to hot tub.” I was

July 14, 1801 Brentwood, UK Granger pulled his horse from a trot to a walk, a move that his mother mirrored, as they slowly meandered down the road leading to the village where his tenants lived. Puzzle Day, of course. Celebrated every year on January 29, the holiday honors puzzles of all stripes - jigsaws, riddles, science, math, mechanical, and word puzzles, and of course, real life puzzles. Develops Skills Puzzles are problems that are difficult to solve or require special skills to resolve. They can take various forms and emphasize different expertise. For example, crosswords, word search, and anagrams put a person's vocabulary and skills with a language to test. Games like Sudoku and Rubik's Cube, on the other hand, test the player's logical thinking and mathematical skills. Jigsaws develop patience and visual skills. Beneficial to Health In addition to being entertaining and fun, puzzles have distinct health and social benefits, especially in early childhood. Collaborative puzzles help children learn how to work together while learning other spatial, motor, and problem-solving skills. Studies have shown that doing puzzles can help enhance brain activity in adults. It also increases creativity and concentration, and it improves memory. Puzzle Day is also known as National Puzzle Day in the United States. How to Celebrate? Host a puzzle party and solve puzzles with family and friends. Send out invites in the form of a crossword, decorate the venue with puzzles and serve a Rubik Cube shaped cake. Learn about the history of puzzles and about the science behind creating them. Spend the day solving puzzles of all kinds. Did You Know… …that the world’s first crossword was published on December 21, 1913 in the Sunday newspaper, New York World? The puzzle was created by journalist Arthur Wayne. *** My doctor took one look at

Shelter Chapter 29: "Inevitable Collapse" I’m not sure where the hell he got it from, but I watched as Sonny pulled a smashed bologna sandwich with mayonnaise out of one of his pockets and unwrap the plastic that was covering it. “God...you have no idea how long I’ve been hiding this!” He whispered, and he tossed the plastic aside just seconds before jerking his head forward to take two or three big bites out of it, smearing the smooshed mayonnaise across his upper lip and cheek
  19. 1 done and only 11 to go! Maybe it was the time off, but did anyone else feel that January flew by? I know we say this more and more as we age but for some reason I thought this one went really quickly. Now that we are in February and I KNOW a lot of you don't do resolutions but also some do. If you did, are they still being followed? Today I had breakfast with two friends that live together. One, who has been through multiple brain surgeries and major life events setting him back, for the past 3 or 4 years had turned to drinking. Walking out of rehab after the first day multiple attempts or shall we say forced attempts, lots of trips to the hospital, losing half his front teeth when falling down, etc. The other friend that lives with him drinks too, he says to deal with the other. Well he got out of the hospital on the 30th of December again after getting his stomach pumped They both made a commitment to stop drinking, but this was the first time it was said by Adam. We are now 35 days in and he hasn't touched a drop. He is so surprised how much better he is feeling, isn't craving the booze, and has lost about 30lbs. and is starting to feel good about himself again. Although not a New Year's resolution, I am so proud of him and even though the other is mildly drinking again, Adam says it is even more motivation for him to not start like the other did. I am so proud of him and hope that he continues down this path. Sometimes depending on the circumstances, promises around the end of the year can come true! Much too early to say forever, but heck 35 days sober after 3-4 years drunk everyday and without AA or others involved is a great start! I wish I could make at least a commitment like that and keep it up on other things! Enough about me and my friends, what have you changed in the past month and is or is not a resolution that is making you feel better about yourself? Now onto the reason we are all here Let's wrap the week up. A bit slow as we had a 5th week in the month this past one. Made of tripe, vegetables and pepper, pepper pot soup, also sometimes known as Philadelphia pepper pot, has for long been the subject of many American revolution legends. Rumor has it that the soup was responsible for helping George Washington's army win the American Revolution. During the war, many farmers chose to sell food to the British. This created a shortage of food for the Continental Army. The cooks in the army cooked whatever they could find their hand on in a stew and saved the day by feeding soldiers pepper pot. Different Versions Versions of the stew can be found in Guyana and other Caribbean countries, where it is reserved for special ocassions like weddings and holidays. The Caribbean version of the stew does not use tripe, and has hot peppers as one its main ingredients. It is thought that the Philadelphia pepper pot may have been inspired in many ways by the cuisine of Caribbean slaves and immigrants in America. How to Celebrate? Make a big pot of pepper pot stew at home and invite your friends and family to enjoy it with you. Did You Know… … that tripe usually comes from 3 of the 4 chambers of a cow's stomach? *** On a fishing trip to a remote lake in Northern Quebec, I asked the outfitter, “Do you stay here during the winter?” “No,” he said. “The snow gets too deep. Dentists tend to get a bad rap, but they are essential for keeping us and our communities healthy. Old Job Dentistry is one of the oldest medical specialization. Oral health has always been a source of trouble for people and a subject matter of great interest to physicians throughout human history. The first dentist in recorded history - Hesy Ra - is thought to have lived and practiced his dentistry in Egypt around 2600 BCE. Barbers as Dentists Before dentistry became an organized professional branch of medicine, barbers were part-time dentists, usually entrusted with the unsavory job of extracting teeth. Modern dentistry emerged during the late 17th century, though the lack of anesthesia and sophisticated equipment made going to the dentist a painful proposition. Today, dentists are an important part of any country's medical and health system. In addition to caring for people with tooth problems, dentists also perform surgeries to correct misaligned teeth and other problems affecting the jaw and the oral cavity. How to Celebrate? If you haven’t been to see your dentist in a while, use this day to make an appointment with them. Thank your dentist by sending them a thank you note or maybe some home baked goods – just make sure there isn’t too much sugar in them. Did You Know… …that the world's first dental school was opened by Dr. John M. Harris in Bainbridge, Ohio, on February 21, 1828? *** While I was serving as a juror, I chanced to share the elevator one morning with a visiting judge. He asked me where the jurors parked, and I informed him that we had our own lot several blocks away. Then it occurred to me that he might be having a problem finding a place for his car, so I continued, "but, Your Honor, they have a special place reserved for judges down below." "Yes," he said dryly, "I'm sure they do." *** Phil was driving down a country road late one night when he felt a big thud. He got out of the car and looked around, but the road was empty. Since there was nothing else to be done, Phil drove on home. In the morning the sheriff was standing at his doorstep. "You're under arrest for hitting a pig and leaving the scene," the lawman told him with a frown. "Please come with me." Phil couldn't believe his ears. "But how could you possibly know that's what happened?" he asked. "It wasn't hard," the sheriff replied. "The pig squealed." *** One afternoon I was walking on a trail with my newborn daughter, chatting to her about the scenery. When a man and his dog approached, I leaned into the baby carriage and said, "See the doggy?" Suddenly I felt a little silly talking to my baby as if she understood me. But just as the man passed, I noticed he reached down, patted his dog and said, "See the baby?" *** My Dad's favorite joke is indelible: Joe is a new man on a construction crew. The first day on the job, he opens his lunch box and mumbles, “Oh no, peanut butter!” The next day, “Peanut butter again!” This goes on for days, until another worker says, “Why don’t you ask your wife to make a different lunch?” Joe replies, “I’m not married. I make my own lunch.” Whether or not anyone else laughed, Dad certainly did. *** *** *** *** *** Which is why you should always keep your towel handy, I know I do. *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** Meanwhile...in Japan *** *** *** *** *** sandrewn
