    Chapter 99

April 25, 2004 The Pacific Coast Highway Pacific Palisades, CA Will “Nice that traffic is light,” Travis said. “I’m usually fighting it going the other way.” It was 8:00 in the morning, and we were heading to Malibu so Travis and I could get situated, and so we could surf. “That’s because it’s Sunday, dipshit,” I said, giving him crap. “Whatever,” he said, which made Stef smirk because he’d said it just like I did. “I am wondering how you are planning t

    Chapter 6

St. Vincent's illness must be short-lived. I believe he replaces Spencer as First Lord in a couple of years. He had an extraordinarily long lifespan for this time, dying at 88.
  4. Mark Arbour

    Chapter 95

April 21, 2004 Escorial Palo Alto, CA Will I opened the door to find my father there with Jake behind him, as if he were Jake’s human shield. “Welcome home,” Dad said, and embraced me warmly. I thought it was nice that he’d taken off his tie and shed his jacket, as if to announce that he was no longer Mr. Corporate America. “I missed you,” I said warmly. Dad looked at Travis, then at Jake, then back at Travis, pretty much just like I had, then finally kicked h

    Chapter 88

April 9, 2004 Aboard the Tonto The Mediterranean Sea Will “This would be better if it were summer,” Travis said, as we got out of the water. The Tonto had paused her progress to allow us to ride the jet skis around, but the waves had started to pick up, and we had places to go, so after an hour, we’d hauled them back aboard. “Pussy,” I accused. “This is way warmer than the Pacific.” “Whatever,” he grumbled, then smiled. “Time to hot tub.” I was

While most air traffic communications around the world use the NATO phonetic alphabet (alpha, bravo, charlie, delta, etc.), Atlanta doesn’t. Taxiways, Gates, and others including a ‘D’ are referred to as ‘Dixie’, so as not to cause confusion with Delta Air Lines. Atlanta is Delta’s hub.

    Ulwaluko

Poor Ian. It’s hard to have so many expectations at just five years of age. He may have the smarts, but he doesn’t have the maturity yet, as witnessed b6 his meltdown about learning the technicalities of the language of music. I don’t quite get the determination to make Gaea like Earth II. Things had gone so wrong there, I would think they would want a completely fresh start. Name your cities and locations after places on Earth I. That’s fine. But make a break and make a new society with more care for each other and the world on which you are now living!
  8. July 14, 1801 Brentwood, UK Granger pulled his horse from a trot to a walk, a move that his mother mirrored, as they slowly meandered down the road leading to the village where his tenants lived. The Duchess of Suffolk had suggested this outing to try to distract her son, because while Granger had tried to remain impassive when he’d told her about Calvert, she was perceptive enough to know his anxiety was expansive. They slowly walked their horses through the village, th

For two weeks, he’d had a friend, someone who wanted to spend time with him. And he had thrown that all away. How could he have been so stupid? Hi. I’m Soren. I’m a mage who can turn into a wolf. How hard was that to say? But no, he had to pretend to be a werewolf. He had to forge a fake claim on someone, trapping himself even furth

  11. July 12, 1801 Brentwood, UK Granger peeked into the drawing room and saw his father sitting on a chair while his mother relaxed on a chaise, both of them looking quite relaxed as they chatted away. He had invited his parents to come spend a week with him here at Brentwood, and it had turned out to be a good decision. His father had been working with William, Matheus, and Michael, training the three of them on the manners, etiquette, and physical gestures like bowing they woul

Dentists tend to get a bad rap, but they are essential for keeping us and our communities healthy. Old Job Dentistry is one of the oldest medical specialization. Oral health has always been a source of trouble for people and a subject matter of great interest to physicians throughout human history. The first dentist in recorded history - Hesy Ra - is thought to have lived and practiced his dentistry in Egypt around 2600 BCE. Barbers as Dentists Before dentistry became an organized professional branch of medicine, barbers were part-time dentists, usually entrusted with the unsavory job of extracting teeth. Modern dentistry emerged during the late 17th century, though the lack of anesthesia and sophisticated equipment made going to the dentist a painful proposition. Today, dentists are an important part of any country's medical and health system. In addition to caring for people with tooth problems, dentists also perform surgeries to correct misaligned teeth and other problems affecting the jaw and the oral cavity. How to Celebrate? If you haven’t been to see your dentist in a while, use this day to make an appointment with them. Thank your dentist by sending them a thank you note or maybe some home baked goods – just make sure there isn’t too much sugar in them. Did You Know… …that the world's first dental school was opened by Dr. John M. Harris in Bainbridge, Ohio, on February 21, 1828? *** While I was serving as a juror, I chanced to share the elevator one morning with a visiting judge. He asked me where the jurors parked, and I informed him that we had our own lot several blocks away. Then it occurred to me that he might be having a problem finding a place for his car, so I continued, "but, Your Honor, they have a special place reserved for judges down below." "Yes," he said dryly, "I'm sure they do." *** Phil was driving down a country road late one night when he felt a big thud. He got out of the car and looked around, but the road was empty. Since there was nothing else to be done, Phil drove on home. In the morning the sheriff was standing at his doorstep. "You're under arrest for hitting a pig and leaving the scene," the lawman told him with a frown. "Please come with me." Phil couldn't believe his ears. "But how could you possibly know that's what happened?" he asked. "It wasn't hard," the sheriff replied. "The pig squealed." *** One afternoon I was walking on a trail with my newborn daughter, chatting to her about the scenery. When a man and his dog approached, I leaned into the baby carriage and said, "See the doggy?" Suddenly I felt a little silly talking to my baby as if she understood me. But just as the man passed, I noticed he reached down, patted his dog and said, "See the baby?" *** My Dad's favorite joke is indelible: Joe is a new man on a construction crew. The first day on the job, he opens his lunch box and mumbles, “Oh no, peanut butter!” The next day, “Peanut butter again!” This goes on for days, until another worker says, “Why don’t you ask your wife to make a different lunch?” Joe replies, “I’m not married. I make my own lunch.” Whether or not anyone else laughed, Dad certainly did. *** *** *** *** *** Which is why you should always keep your towel handy, I know I do. *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** Meanwhile...in Japan *** *** *** *** *** sandrewn

Diego and Steve considered pissing the judge off and canceling but knew that wasn't an option. “If Bryan goes off, what should I do?” Steve asked; his discomfort was very plain. “Let him,” Diego replied, nonplused. “He's been holding on to that anger for nine years and deserves his chance to blow off some steam. 16. Yesterday was WOW… I mean, I sat across from Ross at a table in the local park after buying the ice cream. Ross was so graceful, so appreciative that it made me feel warm inside; it still does. I thought I didn't have any butterflies left to contend with, but they are a new constant problem. Butterflies occasionally jump back into my life, immediately churning like they always do, making me feel queasy. Every time Ross puckered his lips, drew his head down towards the straw, and started sucking

Take some time on this made-up holiday to appreciate the beauty of all things old and vintage. Or you can reflect on the same old, and sometimes boring, things that you do every day and take the opportunity to change things up. The holiday is also sometimes called National Old Stuff Day in the United States. Increased Value While people often see old things as something to be replaced by newer, shinier things, not all of them are useless. Wines, for example, are more valuable and tastier as they grow older. Many old items like maps, books, jewelry, furniture, clothes, and artifacts also gain value as they age. This is because they represent workmanship and aesthetics of a previous historical era, as well as technology that may not exist in present times. Much more valuable than old inanimate items is the wisdom and knowledge we can get from old people. From old family members, one can learn their family history, their genealogy, and their origins. Old people can provide us a richer and more colorful account of the past than any history book can. Antique Versus Vintage Not all old things are created equal. Those who study history divide historical items into two groups based on their age. Antiques are items that are at least 100 years old, while vintage items usually have to be at least 30 years or more old. How to Celebrate? Sort out that crammed attic or basement, and throw away any old things you have no use for anymore. Or, start a vintage collection. Visit thrift stores and flea markets - who knows what treasures you may come across? Get together with your grandparents or someone older than you and ask them to tell you stories about their childhood and youth. Learn about what was going on in the world when they were growing up. Take a bit of time today to contemplate your life and to add a few new activities or hobbies to spice up your routine. Continuing on the theme of old things, perhaps you could pick up collecting old rocks? Did You Know… …that earliest known pieces of jewelry made by humans are thought to be about 100,000 years old? Found in a cave in Israel, the pieces were made from mollusk shells. *** I called a video shop to order the war movie Battle of the Bulge. "Hold on," said the clerk. "I'll check our aerobics tapes." *** I was hospitalized with an awful sinus infection that caused the entire left side of my face to swell. She didn't want it, but I did. So I crossed off my wife's name on the form, entered my own and returned the application. I soon got a phone call from a woman saying my application had been rejected. I asked her why, and she told me the card could only be issued to the person originally solicited by the offer. However, she invited me to reapply, which I did during the same telephone call. A few days later I got another call to tell me my second application had been rejected. Why? The woman told me their files showed that I had previously applied for a card and had been denied. *** At his 103rd birthday party, my grandfather was asked if he thought that he'd be around for his 104th. "I certainly do," he replied. "Statistics show that very few people die between the ages of 103 and 104." *** As my sister and I were counting the cows in a pasture, Dad glanced over at the herd and said, “There are 127.” “How’d you know?” we asked. 18. Do you know how tempting it was to copy and paste the intro to this article? The weather has been absolutely insane. California is buried in snow, and the high today here in Banjoland was 75 degrees Fahrenheit. This is wild! But you're not here to talk about the weather. What was that Oscar Wilde quote? "Conversation about the weather is the last refuge of the unimaginative." I would also say you're not here to read quotes, but this is an Ask An Author interview, so I suppose you could quote the following author. This month, I had the opportunity to proverbially sit down with @AusGlitterati with some questions. Let's see what they said! • • • • • AusGlitterati 15 Stories / 723,080 Words What prompted you to start writing, and what has kept you going? I've always had an interest in writing stories - creative writing lessons at school were my jam! I used to write fanfiction about shows I watched growing up - Cyberchase, Arthur, Scooby Doo! In fact, I was "outed" because my dad found and read something I'd written as a self-insert in a Scooby Doo story - I'd made myself Fred's boyfriend (Freddie Prinze Jr was my first remembered crush!) I also created and uploaded many stories in the Story Designer mode in the WWE games! The direct answer to the question is that I don't know what really prompted me to start. I always just wanted to do it I enjoyed the stories told in books, cartoons and eventually games, and wanted to do that myself. I never did complete a story until adulthood - To The Stars - partly because I didn't think anyone was interested in gay fiction. It was literally GayAuthors and the incredible community that helped me reach critical mass and publish something and it's the community that keeps me coming back! What genres do you enjoy writing, and what genre have you always wanted to explore? I really enjoy writing drama/comedy - it's no coincidence that lot of my plot and characters are driven heavily by dialogue. I don't know if the chicken or the egg came first, but they seem to go hand in hand. I've had a go at writing mysteries in my two short stories - I definitely want to give that a proper crack! I'd also like to challenge myself with a supernatural story! Do you have a favorite food or beverage? Something you could have every day without growing tired of it. Coffee is the easy but copout answer - but we tend to downplay caffeine addiction, so I might instead go with salmon. The ONLY reason I don't live off salmon is that it would literally bankrupt me. 😜 What is one story/book you could read until the end of time and why? Oooft this is a challenging one to answer because I go through phases. Deltora Quest was a major part of my childhood and I do go back to it even now, partially for the nostalgia and partly because DUDE, Deltora Quest is lit! If you could chat/gush about one story you've written, which one? I might pick To The Stars because I don't know how many stories have been published about professional wrestlers. Part of the reason I wrote it was because I'd never seen one before! It was a little bit of a mess - the story changed in scope and direction several times while I was in the middle of writing it - but it was my first one and it's my baby! • • • • • Thanks for the interview, AusGlitterati! It was fun to read your responses. As for the rest of y'all, make sure to send me some questions for future Ask An Author articles via PM. If you can't come up with questions, you can list an author for me to send some of my own! Until next month!

The unofficial holiday honors anyone who is on their way out of their jobs or their elected office. Contrary to popular belief, a lame duck is not an injured or an uncool duck. Political Term Lame duck is a term usually reserved for politics in many democratic countries in the West and in Australia. It refers to a person or a group of people who are nearing the end of their elected term and will not be running for political office again. Risky Decisions Because their time in political office is limited, lame ducks are thought to have a freer hand in making decisions. Studies have shown that elected politicians towards the end of their tenure tend to make risky decisions. This is because they do not need to worry about the political consequences of their actions anymore. Stock Exchange The term lame duck however, originated in a field far from politics. Etymologists trace the first usage of the word to the London Stock Exchange in the 18th century. The term was used to refer to a defaulter - 'someone who couldn't pay his or her debts and then waddled off like a duck'. The usage of the term to refer to an elected official on his or her way out dates back to the late 19th century in the United States. How to Celebrate Honor any lame ducks you may have around you. If you personally know of one, throw them a going away party. If you are in the United States, learn more about the 20th Amendment to the U.S. constitution, also sometimes known as the lame duck amendment. Once you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag. *** Things I overheard at my health club: “I’m only taking this class so I don’t eat for an hour.” “Who knew 40 years of neglect would have repercussions?” “Does this body make me look fat?” *** Could a ... ... librarian be called a bookkeeper? ... referee be a game warden? ... dairyman be a cowboy? ... cabinetmaker be the president? *** A man came in to give his application to the manager. The Horsefly River does not directly drain the waters of Horsefly Lake where you can do outdoorsy activities at Horsefly Lake Provincial Park. The Horsefly River drains into Quesnel (don't pronounce the "s") Lake at Horsefly Bay. Oh, and between Horsefly Lake and the upper course of Horsefly River there is Horsefly Mountain. To get to all those Horseflies, leave the Trans-Canada Highway in Cache Creek on BC Highway 97. In 150 Mile House, leave Highway 97 on Likely Road, and then Horsefly Road. If you're planning on visiting all those Horseflies, I recommend packing OFF! Insect Repellant in your luggage.

Then Work Naked Day on the first Friday of February is the holiday for you. Created by author and home office expert, Lisa Kanare, the holiday is not about working without clothes (though you certainly can, if you would like to), but is about working from the comfortable confines of your home. Working from home not an option? In April, you can wear your pajamas to work. How to Celebrate? Ask your boss or supervisor if you can work from home. Remember, you don’t have to work naked from home if you do not want to. Wear your most comfortable pajamas and work in your home office or your backyard or from your couch. If you do decide to work naked, make sure you do not have any official teleconferences. If you run a company, what about instituting a work from home program? Did You Know... ...that research has shown that those who work from home offices tend to be more productive and happier than those who are forced to come to work every day? ~~~~~~~ Day of the Crepe February 2 is celebrated as the Day of the Crêpe in France. Called jour des crêpes, the holiday is associated with the Catholic feast of Candlemas. On this day households all over France make crêpes. This is because it is believed that crêpes symbolize prosperity. Thin Pancakes Crêpes are thin pancakes made from a batter of flour, eggs, milk or water, and butter. Thought to have originated in Brittany, France, they were traditionally made with buckwheat flour, though these days they are made with a variety of different flours including white flour, chickpea flour, and almond flour. Don't Drop the Coin In many French households, it is customary to make crêpes while holding a coin in your hand. The belief is that if you flip the crêpe in the air and catch it in the pan without dropping the coin, the upcoming year will be a prosperous year for you. How to Celebrate? Make crepes, of course! Not French or Catholic? That shouldn’t stop you from celebrating this delicious dish which is perfect for any meal of the day. Have crêpes for all your meals of the day – sweet crêpes for breakfast and dessert and savory crêpes with savory fillings for lunch and dinner. Did You Know... ...that the word crêpe comes from the Latin word crispus, meaning wrinkled and curled? ~~~~~~~ Play Your Ukulele Day On February 2 bring out your ukulele and strum it all day long because it is Play Your Ukulele Day. The holiday was first celebrated in 2011. Since its inception, the holiday is celebrated all around the world under the slogan bring the world together, four strings at a time. Hawaiian Instrument A ukulele, also sometimes called a uke, is a four-stringed instrument that was first popularized in Hawaii in the late 19th century. The instrument was a version of the machete, a four-stringed instrument native to the Madeira region of in the Portugal. It is thought that the ukulele was created by Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii. Popular Again Today The ukulele found its way to mainland United States in the early 20th century, where it became an important instrument in the jazz music and dance scene during the 1920s. It fell out of favor as the instrument of choice for musicians until the early 2000s, when the proliferation of online music and instructional videos made the ukulele a popular musical instrument again. The holiday is also known by several other names including International Play Your Ukulele Day, World Play Your Ukulele Day and World Ukulele Day. It is sometimes also celebrated on May 2. How to Celebrate? Know how to play the instrument? Take out your ukulele and entertain friends and family by playing it. If you have always wanted to learn how to play one, now is the time to make a trip to the music instrument store and get one and start learning how to play it. Start a band that showcases your ukulele playing skills. Did You Know... ....that the word ukulele in Hawaiian means jumping flea? It is thought that the instrument was so named because of the way the players fingers jumped around the strings. *** Louie and his wife are listening to the radio when they hear the weather report: "A snow emergency has been declared.
