Tim, an honor student from Los Gatos, grapples with heartbreak and self-reflection after being ghosted by Thet, a closeted blue-collar guy from South St. Louis. As Tim wrestles with anger and confusion, a dinner with his grandmother leads to a powerful coming-out moment. Their heartfelt exchange helps Tim process past trauma with his father and recognize the secrecy and pain others around him carry. When he later spots Thet out with a girl, he sees through the act—and instead of lashing out, reaches out with unexpected compassion, hoping Thet will one day accept who he is.

They meet at a diner that serves bad coffee and better silence. Two strangers orbiting the same sleepless hours, held together by routine and maybe something more. Jamie draws to breathe. Luca edits video to fill the hours. Neither of them means to start unraveling, but in the late-night hush between classes and expectations, something begins. A glance. A conversation. A quiet they both understand. This isn’t love. Not yet. It’s just maybe. And sometimes, maybe is the loudest thing in the world.

An immigrant family fleeing a pending disaster finds a home in America

The impact of the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023 was felt around the world, but in few places more than in New York City. Not only is New York home to the second-largest Jewish population in the world, but it’s home to peoples of many cultures, including a large Arab American population. In my New York Stories, New York Holidays and New York Anthologies series, I’ve introduced characters who might well have been in Israel at the time of the attack. October Fire is a 6-part story about Jewish and Palestinian New Yorkers who persevered in the face of hate.
