As part of the creative writing course I am taking, a recent assignment was to write a chapter to go at the start of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men - written in the style of Steinbeck. I have decided to share it with you all.

Lindsey & Rob thought it would be fun to take the boys to New York for Christmas Vacation, so how did they end up supervising ten teenage boys in Times Square on New Year’s Eve? (December, 2009)

These are the original, annual, New Year's letters that I sent to my friends from 1993 to 2001. That was from two years after I moved into the building to a year-and-a-half after I left.

As mentioned, the letters were the basis for the book, and they often overlap the same material. But they cover more time and more characters, and are sometimes funnier because they're more compressed and somewhat more rude.

Memories of a past lover motivate a trip home to say goodbye.

Although modern day “Naptown” is very different from Indianapolis in 1972, it's still in the Bible Belt and gay teens face challenges even today. Let me explain what I faced that led me deeply into the closet. (Revised June 18, 2010)

Jim and his partner Michael live in a socially-oppressed town where being gay is a sheer moral death sentence. At the dawn of the computer era, and in an age where work seems to find him little money or pleasure whatsoever, Jim decides to venture into the world of computer sciences, all the while supporting a man who seems all the more removed from society as time goes along.
