Goldwater says U.S. ban on Gays is wrong

WASHINGTON (AP): U.S. conservative leader Barry Goldwater declared Thursday that the military should lift its ban on Gays since “you don’t need to be ‘straight’ to fight and die for your country. You just need to shoot straight.”

Former colleagues accepted the former senator’s typically blunt comments with deference, but said they are not ready to embrace the position of the 1964 Republican presidential nominee.

“I certainly would respect his comments,” Sen. Sam Nunn, D-Ga., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in an interview. “I don’t agree with it.”

In an opinion article published in The Washington Post on Thursday, Goldwater said that after 50 years in politics and the military, he still marvels that people can get upset over nothing.

“Lifting the ban on Gays in the military isn’t exactly nothing, but it’s pretty damned close,” wrote the salty-tongued Republican.

Goldwater is a conservative who supports abortion rights and has challenged the Christian fundamentalist wing of the Republican Party.

Goldwater said conservatives who support the military ban [like General Colin Powell] were ignoring their ‘movement’s’ core principle, “that government should stay out of people’s private lives!”

How far Goldwater’s party has strayed from the basic principle he pithily outlined. The current group seems to feel the need to be increasingly involved in and ready to regulate other people’s lives.

What the Gops have done to this once-admired country is a crime. A couple of years ago I stumbled on a particular person's youtube page; his primary interest is in posting the oldest surviving audio recordings. One of his series includes the three candidates running for president in 1912 delivering their stump speeches.

Taft, Roosevelt and Wilson, represented the Gops, Progressives and Democrats respectively. The topics and positions the most conservative of the three touched upon, Taft, make the most progressive American politicians today appear in their true light: fear-mongers, bought and paid for by corporate cash. How sad is it the actual conservative movement of 1912 is FAR TOO liberal by today's "standards" to even be plausible as dream-policy. Are we taught in school that the Gop party -- the real one -- is actually left of Bernie Sanders...? No.

The fact is, since the Retrogressive Party took control of Congress in 1996, they have moved this nation backwards by more than a century. Niggled and swept away the concept of progress being good at all. When will the People wake up and see their fears of "others" are being played upon to keep the Fat-Cat Wall-Street-Easy-Streeters laughing at the very notion of democracy? I have such fears for the outcome of the November elections and the survival of the American Experiment at all.

If they get ahold of Congress, our rights and freedoms will be all but doomed and they'll quickly unfold their agenda of re-making us into a second Russia. Mark my words
