Es leben Menschen, aber viele weinen.

Und Mauern stehn, doch viele stürzen ein.

Und hohe Sterne fahrn in schrillen Scheinen:

Und jeder Weg ist brennend und allein.

 

Die Lampen fallen um im Nacht-Gemach.

Gezackte Schatten hasten an der Wand.

Zerschellte Welten schlagen unser Dach:

Das Haus zerreißet unsres Blutes Brand. [i]

The arteries cauterized and alone.

 

The night-chamber lamps tumble down instead.

Jagged shadows creep over the walls first.

Beshattered planets crash our roof overhead:

The house rips apart our blood’s raging thirst.
