A Journey to Egypt - 3. Chapter 3
Alexandria
The ship's days passed gently as Reginald and Alexander sailed towards Alexandria. Each day was filled with anticipation and excitement as they approached their destination. They spent their time roaming the ship, sharing stories, and planning their adventures in Egypt. Gibraltar and Malta were the only landings as the ship briefly stopped to pick up fresh food supplies. Gibraltar was impressive and Malta quaint. The gentle rocking of the boat and the endless expanse of the sea created a tranquil setting as their eagerness for the adventure ahead grew.
As the sun set each evening, they would stand on the deck, watching the horizon and envisioning the wonders that awaited them. The crew, too, shared in the excitement, their spirits lifted by the promise of new discoveries. The nights were filled with laughter and camaraderie as they all looked forward to the adventures ahead.
The night before their arrival, the air was filled with anticipation. Reginald and Alexander found it hard to sleep as they eagerly thought about the ancient city. As the first light of dawn broke, they stood on the deck, gazing at the distant shore. Alexandria was within reach, and their hearts swelled with excitement.
Alexandria, the jewel of the Mediterranean, was founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BCE. The city was strategically located on the coast of Egypt, serving as a bridge between the East and the West. Alexander envisioned a city that would be a center of culture, learning, and commerce, and Alexandria quickly grew to fulfill that vision.
The city was designed with grand avenues, magnificent buildings, and bustling markets. The Great Library of Alexandria became a beacon of knowledge, attracting scholars and thinkers from all over the world. It housed countless scrolls and manuscripts, preserving the wisdom of ancient civilizations and fostering new discoveries.
The Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, symbolized the city's grandeur. Its towering structure guided sailors safely to the harbor, a testament to human ingenuity and engineering.
Over the centuries, Alexandria became a melting pot of cultures, with influences from Greece, Egypt, Rome, Muslim and beyond. It was a city where ideas flourished, and art, science, and philosophy thrived. The city's vibrant markets were filled with goods from distant lands, and its streets echoed with the sounds of diverse languages.
Despite the passage of time and its many challenges, Alexandria remained a symbol of human achievement and resilience. Its legacy endured, inspiring generations to come. It was sight of this great city Reginald and Alexander searched the horizon to see.
As the ship docked in Alexandria, Reginald and Alexander stood on the deck, their eyes wide with wonder. The bustling port was alive with activity, filled with merchants haggling, sailors shouting, and the distant call of seagulls. The air was thick with the scent of spices and the salty tang of the sea. Colorful awnings shaded stalls with exotic goods—silks from the East, spices from India, and gold from Nubia. Camels and donkeys laden with cargo moved through the throng, their handlers calling out in a myriad of languages. Reginald and Alexander could hardly contain their excitement as they prepared to step into the heart of ancient Egypt, a land of mystery and adventure.
The city of Alexandria stretched out before them, a vibrant tapestry of colors and cultures. Modern and ancient blended to create a fantastic picture, both exotic and familiar. The streets were lined with grand buildings, their architecture blending Greek, Roman, and Egyptian influences.
Porters swiftly carried their bags to the pier, and Reginald and Alexander followed, their excitement mounting with each step. They hailed a horse-drawn carriage adorned with ornate decorations and gave the driver the address of their hotel.
The Marhaba Hôtel was a charming establishment nestled in the city's heart. Its façade was adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant flowers, creating an inviting atmosphere. The lobby was spacious and elegantly decorated, with marble floors, plush furnishings, and a grand chandelier that cast a warm glow over the room.
The staff greeted them with warm smiles and efficient service, quickly checking them in and escorting them to their room. The room was a blend of comfort and luxury, with a large bed draped in fine linens, a balcony overlooking the bustling streets, and tasteful décor reflecting Alexandria's rich history.
As they settled into their room, Reginald and Alexander felt alive and energized by their anticipation. The city awaited their exploration of its ancient wonders, vibrant markets, and hidden treasures. Their adventure in Alexandria was just beginning.
After settling into their room, Reginald and Alexander sat down to plan their itinerary for the next few days. They were eager to explore the city's historical landmarks and immerse themselves in its rich culture. Their list of must-see places included the Temple of Serapeum and Pompey's Pillar, walking around the harbor and exploring the markets of the city for foods and shopping. Their hotel was near the harbor and had an excellent view of Qaitbay Citadel, a Medieval Muslem fort but they decided to leave that for last, if at all.
With their plans set, they decided to head downstairs and ask the desk clerk to recommend where to eat. The friendly and knowledgeable local clerk greeted them with a warm smile. She was a petite woman with sun-kissed skin and dark, curly hair that framed her face. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity and intelligence, reflecting the rich history of her homeland. She wore a flowing, cream-colored tunic adorned with intricate blue and gold embroidery reminiscent of ancient Egyptian motifs. A wide, colorful sash cinched her waist, and delicate gold bracelets jingled softly on her wrists as she moved. Her sandals, made of soft leather, were practical yet elegant, completing her attire. The clerk's welcoming demeanor and vibrant attire made Reginald and Alexander feel instantly at ease, ready to embark on their adventure in Alexandria. "Good evening, gentlemen. How can I assist you?”
"We're looking for a good place to eat," Reginald replied. "Somewhere with great food and a bit of local flavor."
The clerk's eyes lit up. "You are in luck! Our hotel restaurant is excellent. The food is delicious, and we have a belly dancer performing tonight. It is a wonderful experience.”
Reginald and Alexander decided to indulge in a traditional Egyptian dining experience. They were led to a cozy, dimly lit room adorned with rich tapestries and intricate lanterns. The air was filled with the soothing scent of rose water.
A servant approached with a delicate silver pitcher and bowl, pouring rose water over their hands and cleansing them with the fragrant liquid. Then, they handed them a clean, dry towel. The ritual was refreshing and symbolic, preparing them for the feast ahead.
They settled onto plush pillows arranged around a low table. A large brass tray laden with an array of delectable Egyptian dishes was placed before them. The vibrant colors and enticing aromas made their mouths water in anticipation.
The tray featured a variety of traditional foods, including kashari, ful mesdames, molokai, stuffed grape leaves, grilled kebabs, and baklava. They started with molokai, a green, leafy soup made from jute leaves, flavored with garlic and coriander, and often served with rice or bread. Reginald and Alexander eagerly dug in, using their hands to tear off pieces of bread and scoop up the flavorful dishes. Eating with their hands added a tactile connection to the meal, making it even more enjoyable. They savored each bite, the rich and diverse flavors dancing on their tongues. The kashari was a hearty mix of rice, lentils, and pasta, topped with a spicy tomato sauce and crispy fried onions. The ful mesdames were slow-cooked fava beans seasoned with garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil, served with warm pita bread. They sampled stuffed grape leaves, tender grape leaves filled with a savory mixture of rice, herbs, and spices between the other foods on the tray. By the time they decided to move on to the grilled kebabs, they were stuffed. However, nothing would stop them from devouring the succulent pieces of marinated meat grilled to perfection and served with tangy tahini sauce. The flaky baklava was saved to the last as the dessert appeared light and airy. The deceiving look of the dessert led to groans of pleasure as they tasted the sweet, rich pastry filled with honey, butter, nuts, and cinnamon.
At the end of the meal, the rose water was passed around again. Reginald and Alexander sat back in their chairs, their faces glowing with satisfaction. The meal had been nothing short of extraordinary. Reginald, the more reserved of the two, broke into a rare, broad smile.
"Alexander, I must say, this is the finest meal I've had in years," Reginald remarked, his voice filled with genuine appreciation.
Alexander, who had a more exuberant personality, nodded enthusiastically. "Indeed, Reginald! The flavors were exquisite, each dish a masterpiece. I could hardly believe my taste buds.”
They swapped stories and laughter as they enjoyed their savory meal and the rich ambiance, creating a sense of camaraderie and contentment. The experience was a perfect blend of tradition and indulgence, leaving them both satisfied and eager for the adventures that awaited them in Alexandria the next day.
Reginald and Alexander reclined on large, vibrantly colored pillows, their senses enveloped by the warm, inviting atmosphere of the room. The air was thick with the scent of exotic spices and the soft glow of lanterns cast a golden hue over the scene.
As the band entered, the gentle murmur of conversation hushed, replaced by the melodic tuning of instruments. The musicians, dressed in flowing garments adorned with intricate patterns, took their places, each one poised and ready. The anticipation in the room was palpable, a shared breath held in unison.
Reginald, with his keen eye for detail, admired the craftsmanship of the instruments—the polished wood of the oud, the delicate strings of the qanun, and the rhythmic allure of the darbuka. Alexander, ever the connoisseur of experiences, leaned back, savoring the moment, his gaze fixed on the stage where the belly dancer would soon perform.
The belly dancer took the stage, captivating the audience with her graceful movements and vibrant costume. She was a vision of elegance and allure, her every move fluid and mesmerizing. Her costume was a dazzling array of colors and textures, designed to catch the light with every twist and turn.
The first notes played, a haunting melody that seemed to weave through the air, drawing everyone into its spell. Her movements fluid and mesmerizing, each step in perfect harmony with the music. Her costume shimmered with every turn, reflecting the light and adding to the enchantment of the performance.
Reginald and Alexander exchanged a glance, a silent acknowledgment of the beauty and artistry before them. They were not just spectators; they were part of a timeless tradition, a dance of music and movement that transcended the ages. In that moment, they were transported, their spirits lifted by the magic of the night.
She wore a fitted, jewel-encrusted bra that sparkled with emeralds and sapphires, reflecting the ambient light in a kaleidoscope of colors. Her midriff was bare, showcasing her toned muscles as they perfectly synchronized to the music. A flowing skirt of sheer, layered fabrics in shades of deep blue and gold swirled around her legs, each layer catching the light and adding to the hypnotic effect of her dance. The skirt was adorned with tiny bells and coins that jingled softly with her movements, adding a rhythmic accompaniment to the music.
Her arms were adorned with golden bangles that clinked softly as she moved, and a delicate chain of gold and gemstones draped across her forehead, accentuating her expressive eyes. The dancer's feet were bare, allowing her to move gracefully and precisely, her toes adorned with rings that glinted as she danced.
The performance added a touch of magic to the evening, making it a night for Reginald and Alexander to remember. They were transported into a world of enchantment and beauty.
After their sumptuous meal, Reginald and Alexander were pleasantly full and content. The delicious food, the enchanting belly dance performance, and the restaurant's warm ambiance left them blissfully satisfied.
They returned to their room, their steps slow and relaxed. The soft glow of the lanterns in the hallway cast a gentle light, guiding them to their door. Once inside, they exchanged tired but happy smiles, the day's excitement lingering in their minds.
They climbed into bed without much ado, the plush pillows and soft linens welcoming them into a cocoon of comfort. The room was filled with a peaceful silence, broken only by the distant sounds of the city outside.
As they settled under the covers, the weight of the day's adventures and the hearty meal began to take its toll. Within minutes, they drifted to sleep, their breaths steady and synchronized. The promise of new discoveries and shared moments awaited them in the morning. Still, they were now enveloped in the tranquility of a restful slumber.
