Pardon My Polari

   (6 reviews)

The story of Anthony Larkin, his struggle against injustice, and the evolution of gay rights in the UK.

The characters in this story occasionally converse in Polari—a secret slang adopted by gay men in the UK during the fifties and sixties to evade prosecution. The Polari words are in italics, and translations are provided in the chapter end notes.

A well written emotional tale that takes you on a ride of emotions. For myself, it was a sliver of history I didn’t know about. Even if you’re familiar with the realities, it’s hard to read. Dodger did a great job of showing the long lasting effects of discriminating laws.

I have a lot of respect for Anthony. He felt a lot of common emotions but I thought he kept a level head, considering.

If you have a minute and are ready to grapple with a difficult topic, this is the perfect story. Highly recommend.

To sum this story, "Never Forget" would be the most appropriate words for this brilliant story.

All these characters are interesting from Anthony's pragmatic approach to the tragic tale of Michael, who underwent forceful chemical castration, to the evil treacherous Larry.

Time cannot heal all wounds, without forgetting what you have lost or what you had to do in order to survive.

The story's painful to read but the writing is excellent.  It fits well with the multiple exhortations seen in several other anthology stories to be vigilant and remained involved. I may be hopeful about the future, but I'm ready to fight so we never experience what the protagonists do.

A very realistic look back at one of the darker parts of UK history. There is humour, there is sadness, but above all there is realism. Well written and told, this should be a compulsory read.

A well crafted story that reminds us that we have so much to lose, while we may  blindly remind ourselves that it can't happen here...think twice. Those who would drag us back to the times of this story are a shameful minority, grasping on the levers of power to enact laws and prohibitions that would once again marginalize us, cast us out of society.

I am reminded of a quote from the late Bill Russell, perhaps the greatest basketball player to ever grace the parquet floor...Criticized and belittled for espousing equality and civil rights, he had a simple and eloquent  rejoinder...

The late Bill Russell in a 2001 sit-down with @BasicBlackGBH

"I was born with a full citizenship... My citizenship is my birthright. That's the way I've always conducted myself — I'm a citizen and I demand everything that goes along with being a citizen."

An excellent post war historical piece. It covers a lifestyle that young gays nowadays enjoying pubs and clubs in London or elsewhere could hardly imagine.  I can only remover the later years before things improved but here in this heart wrenching tale you can see how things were in black and white.

well done and thank you Dodger 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
