GA Writing Prompts - 56. Poetry Prompt # 7 - Blank Verse

Speech to the Battered King

The time has come to speak out loud to you
And make the worries hear of troubled minds
My king and friend, we’ve come a long way here
We fought and wrought on many battlefields
The battle’s lost, however not the war
Let’s rise as one man, stand against our foe
Together we will turn the wheel of fate
And make this day a glorious feat of war
My king and friend, let’s carry on our way
Like phoenix rise and win the war and praise

You are a very gifted poet, and I find it really exciting to see how you stretch yourself by using the poetry prompts. That gives me (and I'm sure Irri as well…) a lot of encouragement that you accept these challenges with an open drive to expand your repertoire as a poet. That I think was our main goal all along.

I wrote a few poems over the years and I liked experimenting with words, but I never considered myself a poet. I consider the prompts poetry school and my poems are homework. I actually find myself waiting for the next prompt :) I found that writing formal poems is even more fun than writing free-verse. Putting the words in the right place is like an intriguing puzzle. Having fun is my primary goal with the prompts.

This is pretty awesome! I had a small content quibble with "make the worries hear of troubled minds" because I couldn't tell if you meant something like "voice our worries" or "clear your mind of worries." The remaining lines are really fantastic... they come across as a real speech, a genuine exhortation in poetic form, and they flow so well. You did such a great job with "fought and wrought," and the repetition of "king and friend" and "turn the wheel of fate" is such a lovely heroic metaphor! I just love this, Dolores.
