The Company - 12. Grand Opening

I woke to Frank gently massaging the bruises the seat belts had left. The sun wasn’t up yet. He kissed me gently and quietly said, “Hi.”

“I’m not that fragile.”

Frank sighed and said, “I’m so glad you’re back. This bed is much too big without you.”

“I’m glad to be back. That truck running the red-light was scary stuff. I’m really proud and grateful to you and the rest of the guys for what you accomplished while I was in the body and fender shop.”

Frank moved around, and we ended up with my head on a pillow in his lap. He asked, “What is the Red File Randy told me about?”

“It’s a file that has all the emergency procedures and contingencies for Randy if I die, or in this case, am put out of commission for a while. We’re a family and I want the people I love to be OK. I know you don’t want to think about it but, shit happens. If it does, I don’t want you and the boys stuck in some legal limbo while lawyers sort it out between golf games and three martini lunches. These are things that straight couples do for their spouses and children. I did it for my family too.”

Frank kissed me long and fiercely— the kind of kiss that will take your breath away.

I looked to our right where Big Ted and Ray were still sleeping. The mass of Big Ted was lying on his left side with Ray spooned in against him with Ted’s right arm protectively draped around him. A classic story: a quarterback and his left tackle.

Frank said, “Ray had nightmares last night. The only way he could get him settled was for one of us to hold him. Walt and Juan were the same way. Juan stayed with Tony and Chris last night and Walt stayed with Lance and Brian.”

I said, “I’m taking them to see Dr. Chang this morning. Would you like to take the three of them clothes shopping later today?”

Frank squeezed me and said, “You always know the right person for the job.”

It was still dark out, so I left Frank with a kiss, got up, put on some shorts and a shirt for a morning run. When I arrived in the kitchen, Marie greeted me cheerily as she and Lee were getting breakfast under way. Kelly, Jo-Jo, Larry and Tommy were all sitting at the kitchen table chatting amiably. The early crew was ready to go.

I was a little impressed at the scale of Marie’s breakfast production. She had about a dozen and a half eggs in a big bowl to which she added half & half, shredded cheese and bacon bits and stirred them up. Sausage and bacon was prepared in a pair of big cast iron skillets and two big pans of biscuits were ready to go in the oven.

I said, “Ready to run before breakfast?” The boys hopped up and swarmed down the stairs. I followed seeing Marie grinning at me and shaking her head.

I had seen the progress that the crews had made from the balcony, but it was nothing compared to actually jogging through it. There was a white picket fence at my property line and a nice cement path had replaced the old muddy trail.

The undergrowth and poison ivy that had choked the woods were gone replaced by sod and picnic tables flanking the path. Various flowering shrubs had been planted like Azalea, Dogwood and Buckeye. Next spring would be a blaze of stunning color. Even in the dim light of dawn, it was clear that Dockside Park had been radically transformed.

Our group rounded the loop by the parking lot and docks. The park wouldn’t officially open until Friday morning. There was some finishing work yet to do but, the lion’s share was done.

The group went back up the drive and passed the new pool house that replaced the dingy old restroom. I saw a shiny new pay phone, a police call box and water fountain in front. A big, inviting pool protected by a cyclone fence sat behind the pool house. As we passed I noticed the old equipment shed was patched up, painted and looked good as new. The undergrowth was gone and under the shade of the giant oak were four picnic tables and a large grill pit.

We jogged to the gate and back and stopped by the water fountain. Some of our novice joggers were puffing pretty hard. It wasn’t hot yet but the humidity promised that it would be soon. Jo-Jo tried the door but it was locked. After everyone caught their breath, we headed back to the house in time for breakfast.

My first breakfast with Marie was excellent. She had scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and biscuits. She served plates to the guys as they arrived. I noticed that she was using paper plates to save wear and tear on the dishes. Many of the guys had showered and dressed in their Game Zone uniforms. They wrinkled their noses at those of us that arrived sweaty.

Maria handed me the morning paper and said, “Randy thought you might want to see this.”

The headline: Escaped Child Killer and Drug Dealer Caught. I read through the article, and it was obvious that the paper was relying on the Lakeview PD’s press release. Thankfully, the Game Zone was not mentioned. It said that he had arrived at a local business and had been denied entry by an off-duty officer because he was intoxicated and belligerent and then arrested for DUI. A search of his vehicle had turned up a cache of drugs, money and several guns. Dodd praised the partnership between the business community with the police department.

Also, on page one was— Dockside Park Makeover Nears Completion and Game Zone Grand Opening. Short articles described both happenings, and Dodd mentioned specifically that Game Zone was a very safe venue. It was designed with security in mind, his son would be working there and there were always a few cops next door.

I said, “Randy was right. It’s all good news for a change. Game Zone even got a nice mention from the Dodd.”

The paper made its way around the table. When I was done, I tossed the paper plate and put the flatware in a small tub of soapy water in the sink. As the first group was done, the second arrived including Big Ted, Ray and Randy. I made a point to hug all three and handed the paper to Randy.

As I hugged Ray he asked, “Frank says you are going to take us to the doctor this morning, and he is going to take us to get some clothes later on?”

I said, “That’s the plan.”

Upstairs as I was heading in to take a shower, Larry and Tommy showed up and followed me in. Before I could close the door, Jo-Jo and Kelly showed up. We took a shower and there were a few boners. It was no big deal. We talked laughed and kidded around. Sure, they got a charge out of being there but, I think it was mostly out of the camaraderie. Nothing is as seductive to an outsider as becoming an insider.

As I was getting squared away, Cole caught up with me and I was concerned by his demeanor. I asked, “Is Toby all right?”

Cole said, “Yes but, you need to see what he stayed up most of the night doing.”

I followed Cole to what I now considered Toby’s studio. As an artist, he was its rightful heir, and I’m quite sure my mother would approve enthusiastically. Cole opened the door, turned on the light and I gasped.

On a big 3x5 canvas Toby had painted Jesus with a tear on his face, hands raised in supplication and eleven doves were flying heavenward. This was not a child’s work or subject. My mother had exposed me to the works of the grand masters and this was something that easily could have come from the Renaissance. The lighting, the textures, the perspective were technically excellent. It was visually stunning.

With a dry mouth, I asked, “Where is Toby?”

Cole said, “He’s on the night shift, so he’s still asleep. I knew he was good, but this is…”

I finished his thought, “Incredible.”

Cole said, “Before we flew to the coast, Toby and I spent a lot of time with Aaron and Adam while you were in the hospital.”

I hugged Cole. There was nothing really to say. We already knew how special Toby is but, he occasionally reminded us in grand style.

I had a quick meeting with my security staff. I guess four people make it a staff. I had Randy, Rory, Danny and Big Ted in my office. Randy would handle things at the Game Zone during the day shift and Daniel would be there for the night shift. Rory had become adept at using the security camera gadgetry and had been studying the manuals for the various systems. He would man the cameras during the day and train others in their use. Ted would be our daytime deterrent against anyone who decided to get too rowdy. Randy would check with the Sheriff’s Department to see when it would be OK for Ray, Walt and Juan to pick up their things.

I had to take our three newest charges to Dr. Chang’s office. That would kill a chunk of the morning, but it couldn’t be helped. We really had no idea what to expect of our grand opening. I expected a crowd but, there was no way to tell how big it would get.

We broke up, but I asked Daniel to stay and close the door.

I said, “I have a mission for you: we’ll call it Operation Romeo.”

His ears perked up at that.

“Ritchie suspects that his thirteen-year-old cousin Tracy seeing someone when he goes in to work. We would like to know who it is. If it’s another kid, fine. If it’s an adult, we’re going to have to figure it out from there.”

Daniel grinned and said, “I like it. It’s a covert surveillance exercise. Where and when?”

I described the apartments Ritchie lived in, the convenience store across the street, and we expected Ritchie to come into the Game Zone about nine to help open. Once Ritchie was gone, according to Billy and Robbie, Tracy would put on a swimsuit and hang around the pool and chat with the neighbor kids and then disappear for a while. Daniel decided this one was easy. He would just park across the street and watch to see what happens.

When we were done Danny asked, “We’ve not had the talk yet.”

“Bill Fuller said you were solid and that’s good enough for me. I know you got a Big Chicken Dinner[1] for being gay. I don’t know the circumstances but, that’s why I never even tried to join.”

Danny said, “You should know sir. I was in the back room of a San Diego club when the Shore Patrol raided the place.”

“Not a problem. Bob and I are going to see about getting your status changed to a General Discharge but, that’ll take time. Meanwhile, having you with us is going to give up options like having a pro check-up on a thirteen-year-old's love life to make sure nothing bad is happening to him.”

Danny grinned and said, “I’ve had worse assignments but not in as good a cause. I like what you are doing. If you weren’t taking care of these boys, the system would chew them up and spit them out. I’m in.”

I said, “Good. What are you driving?”

Danny said, “A Ford F-150 with a camper shell. I’ve got some toys that will be useful: a Nikon with a zoom lens and a discrete parabolic mike.”

“That model truck will fit right in to that neighborhood. When you’ve got something, page me. By the way, you’ll need a pager.”

Danny took a post-it note, jotted down a number and said, “Randy took care of that Monday.”

I transferred the number to the index card with my growing list of important numbers I kept in my wallet.

Danny lingered, and I asked, “You have a question?”

He said, “Since I’ve been here I think I’ve had about fifty passes ranging from plain vanilla to downright kinky.”

I grinned and said, “You want to know what our policy is?”

He nodded.

I said, “The age of consent in this state is sixteen. Many of these kids have been sexually abused and are sexually aggressive. Some of our most aggressive cock-hounds are the younger ones. One cannot go too far wrong following the law and good judgement. However, I understand that it’s damned difficult to exercise good judgement when a hot boy jumps in the shower with you.”

Danny suppressed a smile and said, “Understood sir.”

I spent a half hour on the phone getting some details worked out. I ordered a few items for Game Zone to be delivered and got a few details worked out. Once I was done in the office, I went out to see the day crew gathering. At 8:50, they would pile in one of the vans and make the trip to the Game Zone to open. Tony had Brian, Larry and Tommy out in the boat to check the trot lines. Chris had some younger guys from the night crew in the downstairs TV room talking and hanging out. I was very pleased that Chris, Tony, Frank and Roderick were picking up the slack there. All the boys needed attention. There was only so much of my own to go around. Without prompting, Chris, Tony and Frank were becoming the big brothers for the boys I had hoped they would.

Harris Quick Stop

Danny pulled his truck in beside a dumpster where he had the two things he needed: a little shade and a nice view of the four buildings that constituted the Franklin Apartments. Each building was brick; two stories with six units all facing forward. It was relatively new as evidenced by the trees and shrubs on the grounds. There was a small pool and a courtyard in between the buildings. The property wasn’t deep and stopped at a tall wooden fence behind the buildings. In front, there was a small parking lot and each parking place in the front row had a number that associated it with one of the apartments. Most of the vehicles had departed for work by this time of the morning.

Ritchie Barnes apartment was B-2, the first floor of the second building from the left, and his Oldsmobile Cutlass was sitting in its assigned parking place.

Danny got out and went inside the convenience store. He purchased a canned coke and some beef jerky and approached the cashier— a bored, sleepy looking young man in his early twenties.

The cashier said, “Good morning. That’ll be a dollar thirty.”

Danny handed over a pair of dollar bills and asked, “I’m waiting on a page for a job in the neighborhood. You don’t mind if I hang out in your parking lot for a bit?”

He said, “No problem. You’re in luck: the pay phone here actually works. Here’s your change.”

Danny said thanks, took the coke and jerky, went back to his truck and settled in for his stake out. A few minutes later, the door to B-2 opened and Ritchie Barnes appeared. He went down the stairs, got in the Cutlass and left.

I followed the van to the Game Zone to begin the tasks of opening. Ritchie’s Cutlass pulled in behind me, and we parked in the employee parking lot. Randy used his keys to disarm the alarm, opened the doors, and we got to work.

I got with Ritchie and started by opening the machines and dumping the tokens in bags to recycle. Ritchie was a quick study. He picked up the process and started working on another row. I got fresh cash cartridges for the token vending machines and Ritchie and I dumped the tokens back into the change machines.

Our next task, and it was a real chore, was to count the receipts from Wednesday. Ritchie and I took on that chore to the office. We had seven full cartridges from the night before in the safe and the two partially filled cartridges we had just removed from the machines. The task was onerous.

We had to separate the ones, fives, tens and rare twenties. This took longer than I thought it would. We made piles of the different denominations, then used a bill counter and wrapped the ones in groups of fifty, the fives in bundles of fifty and the tens in bundles of one hundred. Then we wrapped the stacks in rubber bands.

When all the receipts were tallied, we counted them twice and had eighty-two hundred and seventy-seven dollars.

Ritchie whistled and said, “Not bad. You weren’t even officially open yet.”

I said, “Call it a training and recruiting day. I picked up a few workers and an assistant manager.”

“Tracy is really excited. I appreciate you hiring him and, giving him some new pals.”

“How did it go with Big-Box?”

He laughed and said, “Our manager Keith was desperate to keep me. He offered a raise and 10% commissions. I might have even considered it if he hadn’t been screwing me outrageously.”

Someone turned on the sound system and Led Zeppelin came on the speaker in the office.

I looked at the clock and saw that it was just after nine-forty.

The door to B-2 opened and Danny saw Tracy step outside. He was shirtless, wearing Adidas shorts and flip-flops. Danny was a little taken aback by Tracy’s appearance. He was big for a thirteen-year-old and could easily pass for fourteen or fifteen. Tracy yawned, stretched and scratched his nuts. He wandered down by the pool, but there weren’t any other kids around.

Tracy looked around and then walked to the C building, climbed the stairs and knocked on the door of C-4. After a short delay, an older teen opened the door. Danny focused the long lens of his Nikon on Tracy and his mystery man.

It appeared to be a teenager, and a cute one. He was small framed blond and wearing boxers. His hair was in disarray like he had just woken up. Danny took a couple of shots and then focused the parabolic mike on the door. It was quiet, so there was little in the way of ambient noise the conversation came through clearly, and he turned on the mini cassette.

“Tracy, you know I work nights. I’ve got to get some sleep.”

“Come on Sean. I’ll give you a back rub.”

“Oh, all right. Just… remember. I’ve got to sleep… some.”

“That’s cool because I want to sleep with you.”

“You are completely incorrigible.”

“That’s what you like about me.”

“No, that’s what I love about you.”

Tracy entered the apartment and embraced Sean as he closed the door. There was a clack as the bolt closed on the door.

Danny took down the plate number of the Nissan truck that was sitting in the designated parking spot for C-4. He put his gear up, got out of the truck, went to the pay phone and dialed Red Diamond’s 800-number. After navigating the phone menu, there was an answer: “Kincade, watch desk.”

“This is Miloy. Assignment Lima Victor Sierra two. The day word is September-Whiskey-Foxtrot.”

“Welcome to the net Mr. Miloy. The line tests clear. How can I help you?”

“I need a plate run for me and then run a level 2 background check on the owner. Page me back when you’ve got it. Plate number is Alpha-Mike-Romeo Three-three-niner.”

“Roger that Miloy. It’ll take about fifteen.”

Danny hung up, went back to his truck and pulled a special bug out of his tool box. It was clear and designed to be placed on window glass. He walked across the street, up the stairs and planted it as he brushed the window glass.

He walked back across the street and turned on the bug's receiver, plugged it into his microcassette recorder and put the earpiece in. These sounds of teen sex were easily resolved.

“I’m going to cum Sean, please don’t stop… oh God… oh, Sean! Oh… oh… ohhh. ”

Danny shook his head and felt his cock twitch. They really were a cute couple, and it sounded like they were having a ball.

“Sean, why won’t you fuck me?”

“Because you are only fourteen. Look, I really care about you Tracy. No. That’s wrong. I love you Tracy. I’ve never met a sweeter boy. I could go to prison for what we’re already doing. It’s not that I don’t want to. It’ll be better for you if we wait.”

“You love me?”

“I risk everything to be with you Tracy. They would destroy me if they found out.”

“If I can’t ride your cock, can I suck it?”

“Only if you kiss me.”

“I can do that.”

Danny had to grin and shake his head. Apparently, Tracy was lying about his age to get some. He was a big kid for thirteen. Fourteen was entirely believable.

His pager went off with the agency number. He left his ear bud in and listened to Sean get a blow job as he dialed the 800 number and negotiated the security checks.

Kincade said, “Your subject's name is Sean Yelverton. He’s seventeen and just graduated from DeKalb High School. He’s enrolled at Lakeview Junior College and will start in the fall. His mother is Linda Yelverton of DeKalb age thirty-four. The father on the birth certificate is listed as Hiram Griggs. The kid’s address is listed as the apartment, but there’s no phone.”

Miloy said, “Jesus. That’s inconvenient. Griggs is a big shot in the area.”

Kincade chuckled and said, “Yeah. It looks that way. It looks like Griggs is taking care of them. He bought the boy a truck for graduation and has been paying the family bills.”

Danny said, “Thanks K. That’s enough for me to get started with.”

As the clock approached ten o’clock a crowd of a couple of hundred teens, children and assorted parents gathered outside. At the appointed time, we opened the door where Randy, Jeb and Barry greeted them.

Every kid who came through in the door got a little black baggie with the green Game Zone logo, a dozen tokens and a small index card that had our house rules:

No drugs

No alcohol

No fighting

No bullying

Have fun

At the bottom was the public phone number.

On the back we encouraged parents to leave a contact number. Parents and kids alike were astonished. No one else did this but, we did.

As we talked to people and greeted them, I heard Barry exclaim, “Colt!”

I turned and saw Colt Bryant, one of Charlie Dalton’s victims that we had visited with in the hospital, hugging Barry. He was all smiles as his mother was standing behind him.

I shook hands with Colt’s Mom and said, “It looks like Colt is doing very well.”

Mrs. Bryant said, “He is. We had all kinds of fears but Dr. Patrick has done wonders for Colt and the other boys. The others are staying in Rivervine and are still seeing Dr. Patrick.”

“I’m glad to hear it.”

Mrs. Bryant said, “We’re glad that you’ve opened this place. Doctor Patrick gave us a heads-up that it was your project, and we read about it in the paper. Colt has been bouncing off the walls to go.”

Cole had joined Barry, and they were showing Colt around.

“He’s in good hands with Barry and Cole. There’s a house phone here if you need us and, if you like, you can leave a contact number just in case.”

About that time, my pager went off, and I excused myself.

I went back to the office and indicated that Ritchie should follow. When we got back there, he followed me in and closed the door.

“I’m pretty confident this is Danny with news about Tracy’s mystery boyfriend.”

Ritchie looked nervous as I placed the call and put it on speaker.

Danny picked up immediately.

“Operation Romeo is a success.”

“I’m on the speaker, so Ritchie can listen in.”

Danny began, “Tracy left the apartment shortly after Ritchie left. He looked around the pool but, there were no kids around. Then he went to apartment C-4 where he is now. He’s with Sean Yelverton. I did a background check on him. He’s seventeen and just graduated from DeKalb High. He’s clean and doesn’t even have so much as a parking ticket.”

Ritchie sighed and said, “To tell you the truth, I’m relieved. I know him. He’s a really nice kid. He moved in right after graduation. His mother is dying of breast cancer.”

Danny said, “Here’s where it gets interesting. His father on the birth certificate is Hiram Griggs. He’s been taking care of them both since she had the boy.”

“Ritchie, it’s up to you. How do you want to play this?”

He considered the matter carefully and said, “If Tracy’s Dad found out, he would gather a lynch mob. I don’t want to destroy Sean’s life. He’s just a kid too. If it had to be anyone, I’m relieved its Sean.”

I asked, “What are they doing Danny.”

“Right now they are taking a nap. Sean works nights. Tracy woke him up, talked him into trading blow jobs, and they are asleep on the sofa.”

Ritchie asked, “How did you get all that?”

“I have a parabolic mike and a bug. I got pictures of them at the door, but I’ll have to develop them. I’ve got it on tape, and apparently it’s a budding romance.”

Ritchie said, “What do you suggest Tim?”

“Let’s make Sean an offer he won’t want to refuse.”

Ten minutes later, Randy, Ritchie and I had the outline of a plan and were on our way; Randy and Ritchie in the van. I followed in my new Toyota 4X4. We rolled up to the Harris Quick Mart and picked up Danny. We drove across the street to the Franklin Arms parking lot and pulled up in the visitor parking in front of the C building.

Danny briefed us as to what had occurred and, I asked a key question, “Ritchie: Tracy and Sean have a relationship. Your call: is it over?”

Ritchie said, “What are you thinking?”

“We put the fear of Jesus into them, and then we let them down gently. They can keep seeing each other but, it will have to be extremely discrete. They’ll both work at Game Zone, I’ll help out Sean, get another shift leader, and we all live happily ever after.”

Danny laughed and said, “You like happily ever after, don’t you?”

“I do. There’s enough heartache and suck in the world. Here, we have a chance to improve matters. Sean will be better off. Tracy will be better off. We make friends and everybody wins. Never, ever hurt a kid when you don’t have to or can teach them something.”

Randy said, “You guys are new. You don’t know him well yet but, this is who Tim is. He isn’t faking it. This is how he works.”

Danny said, “I… uhh… Jesus man. I don’t know what to say. “

“I do”, Ritchie said. “We’re working for the right guy.”

We followed Danny upstairs. He had a gadget called a skeleton key that he stuck in the lock, after a few seconds, a couple of clicks, a light on the device turned green and the lock opened. The four of us entered the apartment

Tracy and Sean were naked in a very tender embrace and sound asleep on the sofa. They were both cute kids and I shuddered to think what would happen to them if the wrong people had caught them. I couldn’t help but be reminded of Kelly and Jo-Jo. Sean was a thin but cute boy who looked no older than sixteen. Tracy was well ahead of the curve for his age group.

The apartment was neat because there was very little in the way of anything in it. There was a sofa which was apparently the bed, a boom box, a kitchen table, alarm clock, a few folding chairs and a laundry basket. Like most night workers, it was dark in the apartment and the two boys were sleeping soundly. The four of us moved the folding chairs into a semicircle around the sofa and had a seat.

As planned Randy took the role of the bad cop and started the show. He spoke in a harsh, loud voice: “Sean Yelverton, you are under arrest for statutory rape. Kneel on the floor and put your hands on your head.”

Tracy and Sean jumped like they had been struck by a lightning. They were panicked and didn’t know what to do. They were surrounded by four adults, one with a badge and there was nothing to do but comply. There were strangers in their house, and they were at their most vulnerable.

When the shock was over, Sean rolled off the sofa in tears, put his hands on his head and knees on the floor and faced the sofa. Randy cuffed him but, not roughly.

Then Tracy panicked, “No. Please. No! Sean’s good. He’s not hurting me. Stop them Uncle Ritchie.”

Ritchie said, “Tracy, I knew you were out fooling around while I was at work. We had to know who you were with. You only just turned thirteen.”

Sean exclaimed, “Thirteen? You told me you were fourteen.”

I said, “Stop panicking boys. We’re not here to ruin Sean’s life or hurt you Tracy. Come here Tracy.”

He came to me and I hugged him. “I helped you last night didn’t I?”

He nodded, still processing the shock.

“Trust me to help Sean. OK?”

He nodded, and I wiped the tears from his face.

Randy took the cuffs off Sean and said, “Put some shorts on guys. A couple of cuties like you two running around naked is distracting, and we need to talk.”

Tracy and Sean put on their shorts and sat beside each other on the sofa. Both had silent tears running down their cheeks.

I said, “Tracy, Sean: we’re sorry we scared the hell out of you but, we had to. We did it because we had to underline how serious this is. If the wrong people had caught you, they would have destroyed your life Sean. We’re here to improve it. Ritchie, take Tracy to your place and get him dressed. Randy, Danny: give me a minute to talk to Sean.”

Sean asked meekly, “Wrong people? Does that mean you are the right people?”

Randy put his hand on Sean's shoulder and said, “Yes. We’re the right people. Listen to Tim. We'll help.”

Danny handed me the tape recorder and said, “Everybody makes mistakes. We know you’re a good kid in a tough spot, and we all want to help.”

They left us alone, and I moved to sit by Sean.

“Sean. I hired Ritchie to be an assistant manager at the Game Zone. We noticed some things about Tracy’s behavior that made us wonder so, we had to find out who he was with. I sent one of my security people over to stake him out and see who it was. We found out it was you when he came in here, and you traded blow jobs.”

Sean slumped and I put my arm around him.

“We did a little checking and found out who you were. Ritchie knows you and likes you. This would have gone another way if he hadn’t. We found out you were a recent graduate, your mother is gravely ill, you’re by yourself working the overnight shift in a convenience store and getting ready to go to Lakeview community college next fall. Of course, you grabbed on to Tracy. You probably feel very, very alone and frightened. He came along when you desperately needed someone. You love him, don’t you?”

Sean nodded sadly. I stroked his hair and said, “It’s OK Sean. You’re a good boy, and you don’t have to be alone anymore. If you allow it, I will hire you and move you in with my family. I’ll treat you like one of my own. We need you, and I think you need us. You still have a lot of growing up to do, and I’ll give you the room and protection to do it.”

Sean asked, “What’s in it for you?”

I said, “I’ll start with the practical reason: I need another shift leader for Game Zone. I need another adult to help with my crew.”

Sean stated, “That’s not all there is to it is there?”

“I can't walk away from a kid who needs help. I just can’t do it.”

He said, “Dude, you just caught me with a thirteen-year-old. I’m scum. Why would anyone want to help me?”

I turned on the tape recorder and played his words back to him:

“Sean, why won’t you fuck me?”

“Because you are only fourteen. Look, I really care about you Tracy. No. That’s wrong. I love you Tracy. I’ve never met a sweeter boy. I could go to prison for what we’re already doing. It’s not that I don’t want to. It’ll be better for you if you wait.”

“You love me?”

“I risk everything to be with you Tracy. They would destroy me if they found out.”

I said, “You’re a good kid Sean. You don’t know how many guys would have torn Tracy’s cute little ass completely up. That’s why we have to look after him. He’s like a cute little curious puppy that thinks everybody has a milk bone for him in their pocket. We didn’t know who he was with and, Ritchie and I are grateful it was a you.”

Sean laughed bitterly, “I’m not decent. Sitting here alone with you, I want you.”

“If I gave you a blow job, would that calm you down?”

“What? You would…”

“Hell yeah. You’re cute and legal. I’ll do it right now if you quit beating yourself up for being a teenage boy with hormones.”

I drew Sean to me and stroked his hair. I hugged him close and spoke into his ear, “Sean, come with me. You won’t have to be alone and, if you don’t like it, you can always come back.”

A few minutes later, we emerged from Sean’s apartment. I said to my guys, “I’m going to take Sean and Tracy for their physical and get them a uniform. We’ll be along as soon as we can.”

Randy nodded and Danny said, “Welcome to the team guys. I guarantee you’ll love it.”

I took Sean and Tracy with me in the Toyota and said, “I’ve got to drive by the house. You’ll get to meet some of our night shift and a few more of them will be joining you for their physical.”

Sean asked, “Why do we need a physical?”

I said, “To make sure you are ok to work, and the doctor is going to teach you how to avoid AIDS. Everyone in our organization is screened. It protects us all.”

Tracy said, “That’s cool. I’ve been seeing stuff about it on TV, and it’s pretty scary.”

“It sure is. It’s tearing up the big cities, and it’s just a matter of time until it gets out here in the sticks. Dr. Chang will tell you how you can avoid it altogether. Then you won’t have to be afraid of it anymore.”

Sean said, “That’s worth the visit alone. AIDS is one of the reasons I started so late. I don’t mind telling you— I’m scared of it.”

“Many people are and they should be. At present, it’s a death sentence. The scientists are having trouble figuring this bug out. It’s a tricky new kind of virus. I want to protect you guys from it as best I can but, ultimately, you have to protect yourselves, and Dr. Chang will tell you how.”

Tracy said, “Thank you, Tim. Ritchie said you were cool. I’m just now figuring out how cool.”

“Yeah, thanks Tim”, Sean added. “I think I’m beginning to get some of the things you told me.”

We pulled into my driveway and I got the usual reaction to the big ass house.

Sean looked at me with a raised eyebrow and I said, “It’s a lot more comfortable full of kids than it used to be empty. So— do you want to see how deep the rabbit hole goes?”

Sean smiled, and it did something nice to his face. “Yeah. This is turning into a good day after all.”

Looking at the clock, It was a little before ten-thirty. Sean and Tracy followed me into the garage, through the gym where Sean asked, “What is that big wooden box over there?”

“That is a sauna. It goes from lukewarm to barbecue. You sweat out the poisons in your muscles that make you sore after you’ve worked out.”

He said, “I thought so. I want to try it.”

“No problem but, it’ll have to be later.”

In the kitchen Marie was preparing lunch and greeted us. I said, “This is Sean and the little charmer over here is Tracy. They will be working with us at the Game Zone.”

Marie smiled at them and said, “Wait until you try my lasagna. Tim, will you be staying for lunch?”

“No. I’ve got to take a few of the guys in for a physical. We’ll grab a bite afterward. I’m just here to get Ray, Walt and Juan.” She looked a little disappointed, and I said, “I’ll be back for supper.”

She pointed at a Polaroid on the refrigerator where Larry and Tommy both had big smiles and were straining to hold up a massive catfish bigger than they were, “Tony and the boys caught a boat load of fish this morning. He wants to have a fish fry.”

Tracy said, “That sounds great. I love catfish and hushpuppies.”

Marie said, “Then you’ll be in the right place tonight.”

I caught up with Ray, Walt and Juan in the library. They were all parked in comfortable chairs reading. I said, “Are you guys ready for your physical?”

They looked up from their books, bookmarked their places and parked them on the big table. Brian spoke up, from the depths of my favorite reading chair and said, “Tim, your astronomy section is outstanding. I’m going to read everything here.”

“Be sure to read Telescopes for Amateurs. You’ll need it when I dig out my old scope. “

Brian sputtered and said, “You’ve got a telescope?”

“Yep, and I’ve got astronomical binoculars too. I just found out you were interested last night. I need to get these guys to their physical.”

Brian said, “You guys will like Dr. Chang. He’s cool so be sure to listen to him. See you Tim.”

As we were headed to the truck, Sean asked, “How many people live here?”

I said, “I’ll need a calculator, and it’ll take a few minutes to figure it all out. We still haven’t filled up the house. We’re nowhere close.”

“Frank says he’s trying though”, Ray said with a chuckle.

We got to Dr. Chang’s office, and he was ready for us. He got things started as I sat in the waiting room. Forty-five minutes later he called me back.

Dr. Chang took me in his office and said, “I’ve taken blood from the three boys who were being molested by their ‘Uncle Pete’. I run some screens here and send off for others, but all three have what we call silent gonorrhea— it is gonorrhea with no obvious symptoms and most certainly anal. I can treat them immediately. I’ll give them a shot and oral antibiotics. Sean and Tracy are clean.”

I asked, “I’ll take Sean and Tracy back to the Game Zone. I think it’ll be best if I feed the others before you treat them. Can I pick something up for you?”

Chang said, “Yes, please. It would be best if they took the meds with food. There’s a Chick-Filet around the corner. They’ll need to stay an hour to make sure they don’t react poorly to the medications.”

“That’ll work fine Doc. I’ve got a few more that’ll need a checkup, but it was those three I was most concerned about. All three boys had nightmares last night.”

Chang said, “It sounds like Post Trauma Stress. That’s Dr. Patrick’s specialty but, I can prescribe something to help them sleep.”

“I have some Valium on hand.”

“That will certainly do it. One per customer at bedtime.”

I stood to leave, but Chang asked, “Tim, I need a favor.”

I sat and said, “Name it. I owe you at least a dozen or two for trusting me so far.”

He smiled sadly and said, “My brother has had it with my nephews. He had them with a Vietnamese woman, and this is all very difficult for the family. The boys are very precocious twins of twelve.”

“You want them here but with your practice and hospital hours, you don’t have time to supervise them. What’s the problem?”

Chang said, “You call it the call of the wild.”

I sighed and said, “I am honored you would think of me.”

He laughed, hard. “When those two get one look at you, if you think Toby and Brandon were a challenge, wait until you get a load of Minh and Sang.” He handed me a picture.

I looked at a pair of cute twins with long jet-black hair and expressions that promised more mischief than a whole battalion of raccoons. I said, “I can work with intelligent and noble.”

Chang grinned and said, “I’m impressed that you knew the meaning of their names. This all came to a head at the end of school. The boys were caught having sex with a tutor. It went downhill from there when they were being watched more closely: their friends on the swimming team, the gardener’s son, and a neighbor’s boy.”

“Oh my. You think I can tame the terrible twins?”

Chang turned serious and said, “I’ve got to get them out of the Bay Area. One mistake…”

“I understand. There are more than enough boys at home to distract them from me. I think I’ll be safe. When can I expect them?”

“I'm still working on it, but I expect it to be as soon as this weekend. I think they can be an asset to your plan. They are both excellent students and are accomplished musicians.”

“Lui old friend, if they contribute a fraction of what you have, it will be well worth the effort.”

Chang said, “When you told me about your plan at that café on Fisherman’s Wharf, I was astonished. Are you sure you’re not Asian? Most Americans think in terms of fiscal quarters. This will take years.”

I said, “It will but, not many years. Game Zone made eight grand yesterday, and we weren’t even supposed to be open. We did that in a day Lui and our kitchen wasn’t even open. I’ll be back with some sandwiches in a few minutes.”

I returned with food, and Dr. Chang gave his short lecture on how to avoid the AIDS virus to Ray, Walt and Juan as we ate. Chang’s patients stayed and watched Television as the drugs took effect and I took Sean and Tracy on a quick shopping trip for their uniform. They were both a little astonished with the Speedo.

Back at the Game Zone, we had a mad house but, in a good way. The place was packed. At least half the kids in the county were there. I issued the green Game Zone shirts to Tracy and Sean, did a little paperwork for their employment and welcomed them to the team. I told them that Friday after day shift, we were going on an overnight camp out to my country place.

I gathered David Bridges, Todd Brent and Grant Stewart for their physical. I was not so astonished to discover that David was my old friend David Bridges’ cousin. He looked so much like David when we were kids, I knew there had to be some connection. It is a small town after all.

We took off again returned to Dr. Chang’s office, this time in one of the vans, where the boys had a physical and a lecture on preventing AIDS. I noticed that Ray, Walt and Juan sat through it again.

It took another forty-five minutes and, David, Todd and Grant were pronounced healthy. He did caution the boys that the AIDS test would take up to ten days to return, but so far, no youth in Lakeview, Rivervine or DeKalb had yet tested positive, thank God. We were liberated from the doctor’s office with six healthy boys who fit a lot better in the van.

Once we were done, I said, “Gentlemen, Here is your first task. I want you to go into the Dragon’s Lair and each of you pick two black light posters. Pick the two that you think are the coolest. Don’t duplicate your picks. Got it?”

All six boys thought this was a wonderful idea and swarmed into the shop to accomplish their mission.

Our local head shop was a place called the Dragon's Lair. It was run by an old hippie dude named Zan who proved his hippie street cred with two framed ticket stubs to the Door's New Orleans show in 1970. Of course, Zan didn’t sell bongs, merely water pipes, and couldn’t be held responsible for what people smoked in them. In addition to pipes and paraphernalia of dubious legality, Zan had t-shirts, buttons, trinkets, coffee table books, D&D books, various figurines, black lights and, of course, scores of posters.

Looking around the place, I picked out a couple of lava lamps and a rug with the logos of hundreds of rock bands big enough to cover the floor of the dark room. I was lucky to find that Zan even carried two-way black light bulbs you could use in lamps. Click it’s a forty-watt bulb, click again, and it’s a black light. I picked up a copy of Rolling Stone's Encyclopedia of Rock for Alan.

After rummaging for a good twenty minutes, the boys came up with posters of Pink Floyd, the Doors, Rolling Stones, Metallica, AC/DC, the Cars, Led Zeppelin, Super Tramp, Guns n’ Roses, the Eagles, Boston, Queen and Kansas. I paid our tab and made Zan the old hippie smile.

When we rolled into the Game Zone I drove around to the loading dock where we surprised a couple of skater kids smoking a joint.

Ray rolled down the window and said, “Charlie, Zeke, it's cool.”

Walt leaned close to me and said, “They’re cool about everything.”

Charlie and Zeke looked to be about Ray’s age. They were both tanned with sun-bleached hair and had the skinned knees, long hair and t-shirts that marked them as a pair of the local skateboarders, if only they could find a place to skate.

We all piled out of the van and I said, “Over there is a blind spot in the security cameras. You are welcome to come in with a buzz but, no smoking or dealing inside. Watch yourself around here too. The cops do their physical training at Ander’s Gym next door.”

Charlie said, “Yeah man. We heard you were cool. Everybody loves this place. How did you score a gig here Ray?”

I said, “Simple. He’s my best friend’s little brother”, then I gave him a one-armed hug. “We are going to need a few more kids. Come by the office inside and let me get your name and number.”

Zeke said, “Excellent. If I scored a job, my old man would have a litter of kittens on the spot.”

“I might just have to hire you to see that.”

David said, “My Dad doesn’t believe it. When I show up wearing a Game Zone shirt, he’s going to be thrilled.”

I unlocked the loading dock with my key, propped it open and said, “Come on guys, get the stuff out of the back. We’ve got some work to do.”

Just inside the door was the stuff I had ordered. The furniture delivery people had been nice enough to take the sectional sofa out of their shipping containers and cart away the packing debris. The electrical stuff was still neatly boxed up. I picked it up and carried it up the hall to the old pharmacy supervisor’s office and put it down by the door. I flipped the light switch and the overhead fluorescent lights came on. There was a pair of them with four white tubes each and the bright white light illuminated the room.

I had the boys start with the rug and then bring the sofa sections up the hall and line them up against the wall. After placing the lamps and lava lights, I went searching for the breaker panel, ladder and a toolbox. I turned the power off to the room and returned with a flashlight. I removed the wall switch and replaced it with a three-position switch and re-wired it. Then I rewired the ballasts in the fluorescent fixtures in the ceiling.

Then I removed half of the white fluorescent tubes and traded them out with black light tubes. Then I turned the breaker back on. No smoke was a good sign. I flipped the switch, and we had white light, flipped it again, and we had black light.

I took a bow to my audience and said, “I’ll be here all-week folks. The seven and ten o’clock shows are different.”

David asked, “How did you…”

I said, “I am an electrical engineer. This little chore was easy. This Romex wire has three conductors. I used the black wire to power the black lights, the white wire to power the white lights and the third conductor was the common ground.”

We unrolled the rug which covered most of the floor then moved the sectional sofa and end tables. I parked the lamps with the two-way bulbs on the end tables and had the boys tape up the posters. Once everything was done, we turned on the black lights and enjoyed our handiwork.

David said, “I love this room. The music is so good I could stay here all day.”

Charlie sank into the sofa and sighed, “Can I move in?”

Zeke said, “What is this room for?”

“Yesterday, we had a few kids show up so high they were about to fall out. We had to park them in the employee lounge. This is a place where we can park people for a while and let them get it together. I know, I was playing in arcades high as a kite when I was your age. It would be stupid if we ran off our best customers instead of taking care of them.”

Walt said, “Guys, that was us. Uncle Pete had some wicked new shit that really fucked us up. Tim could have called the cops, but instead he took care of us. Uncle Pete got busted for basically being a dumbass, and Tim is like our stepfather now.”

Zeke said, “You dudes are so lucky. I heard about that.”

“Yeah. We were very lucky”, Ray said. “Tim saved us from a world of shit, and we love the guy. He didn’t just get us out of trouble. He took us in. That’s so cool...” His voice cracked and he leaned against me. I put an arm around him. Juan and Walt took that as their que. I ended up with a stack of very emotional boys in my lap.

I said, “OK guys. I love you too but, we’ve got stuff to do. You three, go up front and get with the other guys. Watch and learn. Play a few games. Charlie, Zeke— come with me to the office and let me get your number."

Zeke and Charlie followed me to the office where Rory and Kevin were watching the display. I said, “Hey guys, do you know Zeke and Charlie?”

Kevin bumped knuckles with Zeke and said, “Yeah, we were watching you two burn one out back. We turned the cameras away, so it didn’t get you on tape.”

Rory smirked and said, “I thought stoners only came out at night.”

“Well uhhh…”, Zeke said bashfully, “It looks like our connection is going away on a long trip. We are probably going to be pretty dry for a while.”

I said, “You two: go play up front. Watch and learn what the other guys are doing. Rory, I’m going to need you for a chore in a minute.”

I got their names and numbers and handed them some tokens: Zeke Smith and Charlie Scott were elated. I followed them out to the hall to the front and said, “Thanks for your help in setting up the dark room.” I handed them each a fifty and said, “Get some white tennis shorts like the other guys are wearing. We’ve got a ton of the Game Zone shirts in the office.”

Their eyes got big as saucers and Charlie said, “You’re hiring us?”

“I have another gig in mind for you two. Dockside Park is going to have a skate park. You could do a lot worse for a first job. One rule— nothing stronger than weed and never, ever buy, sell or smoke any shit on the job, deal?”

I was going to shake their hands, but the two boys simultaneously hugged me.

“One other thing. I’m taking all the guys for an overnight at my place in the country Friday night. That would be a great time for you to get to know everybody. Be here at nine tomorrow with an overnight bag and pack a swimsuit.”

I made it to the kitchen. Roderick was gone, but James was there minding the store.

“Hi James. How is it going?”

He said, “We’re out of pretty much everything. Randy is taking Roderick to get another load.”

“It smells great in here. What is that?”

“It’s a trick Aunt Kitty taught us. When you put a bunch of hamburgers on to cook, throw some onions and bell peppers on too. It tastes as good as it smells. They installed the big screen a little while ago. We’ve got the Braves on with no volume. Alan’s tapes are way better.”

“I believe it.”

As I moved into the main gaming area, Big Ted and his teammates were playing Atari football. Ray was standing with them and introduced a bunch of them. I hoped they had some seniors stashed away somewhere. They were mostly sophomores and juniors in the little knot of players and only a few of them were big.

I ran into Little Karl, the kid I had given a ride to the night before playing the Centipede machine. “Hey Karl. How is it going?”

“This place is crazy today and the food is great.”

I asked, “Are you going to stick around until closing again?”

“Probably.”

“We’ve got a room in the back. If you get tired you can go back there and crash for a while. If you do stay until close, check with one of us. We live right around the corner from you.”

Karl beckoned me over to whisper in my ear and asked, “Do you like boys?”

“Yeah but, not like that. I just want to make sure my best customer gets home OK in the dark.”

He said, “I was hoping you did.”

“Would you like to meet a boy your age that might be interested? As cute as you are, that shouldn’t be too difficult to arrange.”

Karl’s reserve cracked, and he smiled, “Yeah. That would be really cool.”

He had one of the Game Zone baggies in his back pocket. I picked his pocket, put some tokens in it and said, “Hey Karl, you dropped this.”

He took it, shook it, gave me a smile that completely transformed his face and said, “Thanks Tim.” Then he went back to his game with a smile.

vii.

Bobby and Tommy were working upfront and asked, “Could we see you a minute?”

I nodded and led them down the hall but instead of the break room, I led them into the Dark Room.

They both said, “Whoa, when did this happen? This is cool.”

“I just put it together with a little help from some new guys. If we get any more people too high to stand, we send them back here to come down.”

One of the twins closed the door, latched it and they both jumped my bones. We tumbled into a heap on the couch.

I said, “Uhhh… what’s up?”

“Last night Sheriff Hollingsworth called our Dad. He told him that he had been looking over his records and our arrest was based solely on that dirty deputies say so. There was no evidence. He said he thinks the only reason we were busted is that we refused his advances. Hollingsworth apologized profusely and said the charges would be dropped and our records cleared. They’re going to refund our fines. Dad is proud of us! We’ve got a job, and what we had been telling him all along was true.”

I said, “He should be proud of you. You’re two great kids.”

Tommy (I think) said, “Hollingsworth told Dad a little about you. Not everything but, how us kids will tell you stuff we won’t tell anybody else, and how you’ve helped like every kid in town. You don’t know how humiliating it was to be under the thumb of that Deputy. By getting that shit off our record, it’s the very last hold he had over us.”

Bobby (I think) just put his head on my shoulder. He trembled with emotion, “The rift between us and our Dad has hurt. He didn’t believe us and just got more pissed. His not believing us hurt us, and made us more pissed. It was a vicious circle. It will take a while to heal and, will leave a scar but, this broke the log jam. We’re way better off now.”

Tommy (I think) added, “And horny. Just tell us what you want, we’re yours.”

I said, “I want to give Tommy a blow job, just me and Tommy in the room. I want to do it in front of a mirror, so I can see his face when he cums. Then I want to do the same thing with Bobby. I want to do it with you as individuals. I want to get to know you as individuals, and hopefully learn to tell you apart. Is that kinky enough for you? “

Bobby (I think) said, “That… works for me. Compared to some things other guys have wanted us to do, it’s plain vanilla but, I’m sure it will be good with you.”

Tommy (I think) asked, “Why do you want to see our faces when we cum?”

I brushed hair out of his eyes and said, “You’re both easy to look at. When most people look at gay porn, they are watching dicks and jizz. I watch their faces when they cum. It’s a huge turn on to me. I know, it sounds weird. What I really get a charge out of my partner’s pleasure.”

Tommy said, “I would like that and, I’m pretty sure Bobby would too but, we really want to join your harem.”

Bobby said, “The one debt we owe Officer Friendly is teaching us how much we like being handcuffed and spanked. I don’t know why but, it makes me so horny it hurts.”

I chuckled and said, “Are you two bad boys who need to be spanked?”

Tommy grinned and said, “Yeah, we need discipline from someone we like.”

viii.

In the office, I asked Kevin to man the security console for a while and Rory to grab the banker’s box in the closet. He followed me to my truck out through the loading dock. After locking up, we took off for the bank.

Rory said, “Wow, this is heavy. What is it?”

“Take a peek.”

He popped open the lid and then quickly closed it like there were snakes in it. He said, “Oh my goodness, how much is in here?”

“Eighty-two hundred and seventy-seven dollars— it is our take from yesterday.”

“Is that good?”

“For a day we weren’t even supposed to be open, it’s great. Look Rory— I took you with me for this bank stop because I wanted a word with you. You’ve really stepped up and, I appreciate it. Your maturity impresses me, and the younger kids love you. I like the way you have become Randy’s partner in security matters. You’ve been teaching our guys how to run the cameras so no one will get stuck doing it all the time.”

Rory beamed and said, “I feel a raise is in my future.”

We arrived at the bank and I spoke to my favorite helper Tiffany Darrow. She was a pretty twenty-something young lady trying to make a name for herself in the bank’s account services department. She often worked with Mrs. Holloway, Larry and Tommy’s mom. We went into her office and I said, “Tiffany, I’ve got a wee problem with the Game Zone. I thought of nearly every contingency but this.”

I opened the Banker’s Box and Tiffany said, “Oh my. It looks like you need for us to pick up your deposits.”

“This isn’t a problem I considered. We have a bill counter and even with its help, it took us a good while to count up this morning.”

Tiffany brought in Mr. Jacobs from retail accounts to give us some pointers. Most of our take was in small bills. We got some twenties, but only had a few hundred dollars’ worth. We also got change but, we didn’t have enough to fret over yet. The bank provided bags for the deposits and advised me on how and where to get coin sleeves and cash straps for preparing it. We took the banker's box into a room in the back of the bank, and they showed me how the professionals did it.

They used a machine like ours, they just had a lot more experience with it. Their count of our loot was eighty-two hundred and eighty-six dollars: a five and some ones were stuck together. We got the deposit slip done, and the Game Zone banked its first day's take.

They advised us to count up at the end of the day and have it picked up by armored car. The bank provided that service at a reasonable rate, and I decided that was worth doing.

Tiffany asked, “What possessed you to use a banker’s box?” Then she smiled and said, “Oh, Duh!”

I shrugged and said, “It seemed reasonable. Do you have the other matters we talked about taken care of?”

She smiled and handed me several letter-sized manila envelopes. She handed Rory a signature card and asked him to sign it.

Rory asked, “What’s this for?”

“It is a comparison signature we keep on file. Tim says you are moving up in his organization. We can check any signatures against this one to detect forgery.”

Satisfied, Rory signed. I thanked her and we departed.

Rory asked, “What’s next boss?”

I handed Rory one of the envelopes. He took it, and it had his name typed on it. He looked a question at me and I nodded.

He opened it and found a passbook, two books of checks and a debit card. “What is this Tim?”

“I’m your guardian and one of the things most young people have to learn by trial and error is banking. I will work with you on this, just don’t go hog wild. The passbook has your account information and balances. The checks are written against your checking account, and the debit card is electronic access to your checking account. I gave you the maximum I could that you wouldn’t have to report to the IRS.”

Rory said, “It says here I have five thousand in checking and eight thousand in savings!”

“Welcome to the inner circle Rory. You’ve earned it.”

He asked, “Umm… What does this mean?”

I put my right arm around him and said, “It means I love you Rory, I’m proud of you, and you have earned a position of responsibility and trust. Now— we need those supplies to handle cash at Office Depot and I need to accept an order I made yesterday.”

We made our stop in at Office Depot and were greeted by a sales associate that took us right to the stuff we needed. He also suggested a kit for handling coins. It consisted of clear plastic tubes that were the right size for specific coins like pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, and they had marks on them for just the right amount of each then you could pour them into a coin sleeve, and you were done.

I purchased a copious amount of cash handling supplies, and then I drove down to my favorite Toyota/GMC dealership. I walked around the used cars and spotted a nice used truck for Grant. I scribbled down the inventory number and soon my favorite sweaty truck salesman caught up with me.

“Mr. Shepherd! Good to see you. We’ve got your order over here. We’ll deliver them today just as you requested.” I handed him the envelope with a cashier’s check to handle the transaction.

I said, “Add this truck. I’ll write you a personal check for it.”

I followed him over and saw my new truck. It was dressed just like I wanted it. It was an X-tra cab two-wheel drive with a steel tool box and a Tonto cover over a bed liner. The back tires were not quite mud tires but, they wouldn’t get stuck nearly as easily as street tires. There was another truck I had picked out for Roderick with similar customization, and a brand-new red Honda Prelude with all the bells and whistles from the dealerships Rivervine location.

Rory noticed the Prelude and said, “Now, that’s a real beauty.”

Randy appeared from around the building and said, “It sure is.” He showed Rory a vanity plate he had made just for him: RORY.”

Rory covered his mouth and said, “I’m not going to cry. Well… maybe some. Tim, Randy, I love it!”

I said, “We knew you would. Frank dropped off Randy when he took Ray and his buds clothes shopping in Rivervine. He’s here to take you for a ride and familiarize you with it.”

Rory looked at me and asked, “Why me?”

“I told you. You are moving up. I need more drivers because I’m stretched thin. I need to have someone that can take one of the boys to the doctor, dentist or run errands. Besides, I think you’ll look good in that car. It’ll show the others that hard work and teamwork are rewarded. Now— I’m going to head back and see how the Game Zone is fairing, go home for supper, and then go back to close. See you two later.”

ix.

I didn’t go straight back to Game Zone. I drove to City Park to walk around and take notes for planning. I had copies of the plans from the city but, there was no substitute for taking a good long look at the place.

City Park had a different vibe to it than Dockside Park. They were similar in many ways: they both had boat ramps and were built in the thirties during Roosevelt’s New Deal by the Civilian Conservation Corps (or CCC). It was nice in its day, but that had been fifty plus years ago.

All the structures were showing their years. There were two buildings for restrooms. One had been closed for as long as I could remember and the other would only serve in the direst emergency. In the South, the CCC had out-built many small towns' ability to maintain their parks and facilities. There was potential, but we would have to be smart about it. We didn’t want our new structures to fall victim to the same vandalism and neglect.

I didn’t see nearly as many kids around compared to Dockside Park, but there were a few. There was too much clutter, undergrowth and litter. There had been numerous picnic tables but, now most were piles of broken concrete. Every building had signs of vandalism, graffiti and decay. I saw what I knew was surely some form of cruising, but I wasn’t familiar with how the game was played at City Park.

The neighborhoods around City Park weren’t upscale like Lakeview or Pecan Acres. They were working-class neighborhoods with track housing built Post World War II and were well into their second generation. Some were lovingly maintained with additions and improvements while others were the same as the day they were built. A few had been allowed to fall into disrepair.

I walked down the drive and back taking notes and saw Steven’s old buddy, football player Dick who liked getting blow jobs from junior high boys, sitting in his Volvo smoking something the cops wouldn’t approve of. According to Steven, he had graduated in May.

I kept walking and saw a scene from the old Bad News Bears movie play out in front of me: a cute kid on a bike with the look and attitude of Tanner Boyle. He appeared cocky and confident. I did see his head turn when he passed me. I kept walking for a few minutes, took a good look at the boat ramps and parking area. There weren’t nearly as many people using the boat ramps here as at the other park.

When I came back the other way, I noticed Football player Dick was missing from his car. He was a big boy but soft. If push came to shove, I could easily hand him his head. On a scale of ten, he was a low seven, and would not be on my cruising dance card. The kid I had mentally labeled Tanner Boyle was nowhere in sight.

As I kept moving, I saw movement through the undergrowth and Tanner’s bike was leaning against a tree. I was going to have fun with this.

I knew how to move silently, so I went around their blind side. Sure enough, Football Player Dick was getting a hummer in the bushes from a little cutie who looked younger than Toby. I wondered if Football Player Dick’s Daddy would spend as much on a lawyer as he did for that car.

They were in an old partially collapsed covered picnic table pavilion. A storm, termites or just plain rot had collapsed the roof from the front of the shelter providing a convenient nook for a blow job out of sight.

As I got closer, I could see them intermittently and hear them haggling:

“Let me fuck you Rebel. You know you like it.”

“No. You're too big, only gave me a twenty, and don’t have a rubber.”

“Then let me cum in your mouth.”

“You only paid twenty.”

“Can I owe you?”

“You already owe me. I’ll do it if you will.”

“Let me think about that…”

I wondered if he had been like that with Steven. I was stuck between laughing at the banter and wanting to kick Football Player Dick’s ass for messing around with a boy as young as Rebel obviously was. I came back to that pesky rule: never hurt a kid when you don’t have to. As much as I didn’t like his behavior, Football Player Dick was a kid. Sure, he was an asshole but, still basically a spoiled, stupid kid. If he kept up screwing around with boys like Rebel, someone else would be teaching him a lesson, and they wouldn’t be gentle about it.

Rebel was engrossed with sucking Dick’s cock, and Dick was in bliss with his eyes closed doubtlessly dreaming about whoever it was he really wanted to be with. I probably could have driven up in a tank and neither one would have noticed.

They were so oblivious to anything but sex, I was able to walk inside the shelter and sat leaning against the rail.

Dick said, “Oh Rebel, lick my balls.”

Rebel didn’t answer, his mouth was full.

I said, “Maybe you should lick his balls some more.”

Dick’s eyes went wide and Rebel released his cock and turned.

I said, “Rebel, you aren’t in trouble. Dick here might be. How old are you Dick, eighteen? Rebel, you look like you're about twelve?”

Rebel said, “Thirteen. He made me.”

I said, “For twenty bucks.”

Dick said, “He’s an excellent cocksucker. Why don’t I just leave him for you?”

“That’s not going to work. I live down by Dockside Park. Kids down there love me and tell me just about everything— like a sucking off a big burly jock in a Volvo. They like your big cock, you like them sucking it. Nobody really gets hurt but you Dick.”

Dick said, “Me?”

“Yes, you. You are playing head games with yourself. It'll never be as good for you until you give. You’re all alone and emotionally isolated. This is high-risk stuff. If you got caught, it would ruin your life. I caught you so, it can happen. You aren’t bad-looking Dick. Do a little gym time, and you could be the guy in the park everybody looks at.”

Rebel asked, “Who are you, the gay Dear Abby?”

“I try to help you guys. Let me help you, Dick. If you do and start treating the boys better than cum dumpsters, I can hook you up.”

Dick said, “What’s the catch?”

“No catch. All I ask is that you treat the kids better. You can start by giving Rebel here a blow job— a great one. Lick his balls, rim him a little, let him cum in your mouth. Make it the best he’s ever had.”

Rebel said, “Hell yeah. I like that advice.”

Dick asked, “Why?”

“You’ve only been taking Dick. You’ll never truly feel how good and hot it is until you give. Let go, let your inner wild thing out. Rebel is a good-looking kid. I’d do him myself if I wasn’t too old. You’re too old but, you’re already wet and sticky.”

Rebel took his shorts off, lay on the table. I was impressed. For just thirteen, Rebel had a near six-inch cock. It was skinny but, he was still growing. Dick did as I suggested and gave Rebel an excellent blow job. When he was done, Rebel finished Dick off in seconds. Elapsed time: about four minutes.

When he was done, Dick hugged Rebel, kissed his cheek, told the cute little tough guy that he was a hot boy, thanked him for all the blow jobs and promised to trade next time. Dick had to return to his job as a runner in his Dad’s law office. I told him that Dockside Park would re-open tomorrow. I would be there or at the Game Zone.

When he left Rebel said, “Thanks for that. That was a great blow job.”

I asked, “How long have you been making cash with your dick?”

He said, “I was out here last summer and some old guy in a Dodge van got me high and then offered me forty bucks just to let him suck my dick, easy money.”

“It’s very dangerous money. There are some real psychos around that like to hurt kids.”

Rebel said, “Tell me about it.” He lowered his shorts and mooned me. There were narrow scars across his behind. “Some guy offered me fifty if I’d let him spank me. I didn’t count on him doing it with a telephone cord.”

I patted his cute little behind and said, “That guy should be bitch slapped for marking up such a cute ass. You like a little spanking?”

He chuckled and said, “Yeah, a little. If you'd like to, I’ll give you a free-be.”

“That's tempting, but I wasn’t out here cruising.”

“What are you doing out here?”

“I’m an engineer. I designed the makeover of Dockside Park, and we’re going to do something similar here but, I need to figure out what. It’s much bigger, has a lot more waterfront but, it’s long and narrow.”

Rebel said, “I’ve been to Dockside Park before but, it’s a long trip on a bike.”

I asked, “Do you know about Game Zone?”

“Yeah. No money.”

I said, “As cute as you are, I bet you make a good bit.”

He sighed, “I do but most of it goes to my Mom for booze, bills and pills. My dick keeps me fed and the lights on.”

I pulled out my wallet, handed him two hundred-dollar bills and said, “Tell her you got a job. Come on. Let’s go have some fun.”

Rebel’s eyes went wide, and he said, “Holy shit! I won’t have to trick for a while.”

I said, “You shouldn’t have to ‘trick’ at all Rebel. If you’ll let me, I’ll try to help you out of this mess like I helped Football Player Dick.”

Rebel said, “Dick was easy. You just helped him figure out he really is queer and doesn’t just like blow jobs. My Mom is a lot more complicated.”

“I’m an engineer. I love solving complicated problems.”

I drove Rebel by his house to drop off his bike. He went inside for a few minutes and, when he came back, he was happy.

“Mama hugged me and said I did good.”

x.

When we arrived back at the Game Zone, I gave Rebel one of the little Game Zone coin bags and filled it up for him. I asked him if he was hungry. That’s an idiotic question to ask any thirteen-year-old.

I bought us both a hot dog and a coke. I saw Little Karl and invited him over and got him a dog too.

Karl said, “These hot dogs are great. I’m impressed that you’ve even got sauerkraut. You’re lucky Rebel. Tim likes you.”

I said, “I like you too Karl.”

Rebel smiled and said, “Aren’t I likable?”

Karl said, “Yeah but, you can be mean sometimes. Tim is one of the coolest guys you’ve probably ever met Rebel. Talk to any of the guys in Game Zone shirts. He’s the foster Dad to half of them.”

Rebel’s eyes widened as he looked around. Brandon was coming forward from the office and came over. He said, “Hi Rebel, Karl. Dad, we might have a problem. It’s nothing urgent so, finish your dog.” He excused himself and retreated to the office. That suggested to me that something just might be urgent.

Rebel asked, “Did he just call you Dad?”

I said, “I’m Brandon and Toby’s foster Dad since their father got killed in a wreck.”

Rebel said, “They’re pretty cool.” Then he sighed and said, “Maybe I shouldn’t have been such a prick to them last year.”

I finished my dog and said, “Rebel, they just don’t make kids much nicer than Toby and Brandon. Be nice to them, and I guarantee they’ll be nice to you. You guys have some fun. I’m going to see what is on Brandon’s mind.”

On my way back to the office, I was intercepted by Billy and Robbie. Billy was carrying a carton of chocolate milk and said, “You got a minute? We need to tell you something important.”

I asked, “What’s up?”

Billy said, “Come in here.”

I followed Billy and Robbie into the Dark Room. Before I could close the door, Rebel came in. Billy said, “You know those kids on milk cartons?”

I said, “Yeah. Sure.”

Robbie said, “One of them is here and there’s a man with him. I can tell he’s scared.”

I asked, “Are you sure?”

Billy and Robbie both nodded. Billy said, “I know he is. He is on this carton of chocolate milk.”

I looked at it and saw the face of a tow-headed boy a little older than Billy and Robbie.

I said, “Come on back to the office.”

When we got to the office, Brandon was following the man and the boy with the cameras. I looked at the boy on camera, compared him to the milk carton and said, “Holy crap, it is him.”

Brandon looked at the milk carton and said, “I knew something was wrong. A kid with his Dad in a place like this shouldn’t look nervous and scared. And, who wears a suit to an arcade on a day like this?”

Billy said, “The man talked to us and hinted that we should follow him and the boy to the restroom but when the man wasn’t looking, the boy shook his head no.”

I asked, “Have you got Daniel in on this?”

Brandon said, “Yeah. All our guys know and are watching him like a hawk. Big Ted is staying close to them. Daniel just called the cops on the radio. They’re on their way.”

Suddenly, Rebel appeared on camera. I looked around, and he was gone from the office.

I muttered, “What are you doing Rebel?”

Brandon said, “Look. He’s talking to them.”

Rebel put two tokens in the Pac-Man machine and began playing doubles with the boy. I said, “Smart boy. He’s buying time.”

Brandon switched cameras, and you could clearly see the man was touching Rebel’s ass. Rebel said something and the man who moved closer to him. Time seemed to drag but, the two boys were into the game and all the man could do was watch.

The radio squawked and Daniel’s voice said, “The cavalry is here.”

Detective Monroe and another detective I remembered from Saturday night came in the front. Daniel led the detectives around the rows of video games, so the suspect couldn’t see them. All the while, Rebel kept distracting the man.

The detectives approached the man from behind and completely surprised him. He was handcuffed so fast he didn’t have an opportunity to do a thing. They frisked the man and took a pistol out of his coat. Rebel put his arm around the boy and led him to the Dark Room. The detectives marched the suspect out the back. Daniel let them out the loading dock where they formally arrested him, read him his rights and took him off to jail in a police car. Brandon caught everything on camera.

Monroe came back into the office and asked, “How did you know?”

Brandon said, “We’ve got it all on video. I’m recording it on a tape for you. We first noticed that something was odd because the boy didn’t act right. If he was at an arcade with his Dad supposedly having fun, he shouldn’t have looked nervous and scared. The guy was wearing a suit to an arcade on a hot summer day. That made us curious.”

I said, “That’s when Billy and Robbie here recognized the boy from a milk carton. Then, Rebel went in and started playing the boy in doubles on the Pac-Man machine to distract him long enough for you to arrive.”

Monroe watched the video replay. Brandon slowed it down here and there at the Detective’s request.

When it got toward the end, Monroe whistled. “That’s Rebel Ashcraft. The school people think he’s got horns and a forked tail. Have you tamed him Tim?”

I said, “He’s in a bad situation. He’s the bread winner of the family at thirteen because his Mom is on the sauce.”

Monroe said, “Shit. We should have figured something like that was going on with him. Where is the victim?”

I said, “Rebel led him into a room we use to get off our feet sometimes. I’ll go get them.”

When I stuck my head in the Dark Room, Rebel and the boy were sitting on the sofa side by side talking like… boys. I said, “Detective Monroe wants to talk to you guys.”

Rebel said, “Matty, this is Tim. Tim, this is Matty. Matty is cool, but he’s a little shaky right now. Do you suppose we could talk in here?”

I said, “It's a pleasure to meet you Matty. Rebel, you were brave and smart distracting that man like you did. I’m very proud of you. I’ll go get Detective Monroe but, I’ll have to turn on the white lights.”

Detective Monroe liked the Dark Room. He especially liked the way we could turn the real lights on. He sat and talked to Matty and Rebel. I gave them some space.

I went into the office, hugged Brandon and said, “I’m so proud of you son. You’ve made us all look great today.”

Brandon said, “Thanks Dad but, please remember Billy and Robbie. They are the ones that recognized the kid on the milk carton. I really like this job. It’s fun, cool and almost like school because most of my friends are showing up.”

“That’s one of the reasons I built it”, I said taking a chair. “Most kids start out with a job they hate like cutting grass, bagging groceries or working in a fast food joint. I wanted you boys to have a positive experience working. I think it’s important because it shapes your attitudes about work, and it never hurts to have some spending money. Not every job you will have will be as fun as this one but, if you are working with the right people and doing things you are interested in, they can be.”

A familiar voice said from behind me, “You impress me more everyday Tim.”

I turned to see Judge Vinson standing in the doorway. I stood and said, “Welcome to the Game Zone your Honor.”

She looked at the surveillance console and said, “This is how you spotted Matthew Lamb?”

Brandon said, “No Mam. When the two came in, they just didn’t look right, so we started watching them.”

The Judge asked, “What do you mean they just didn’t look right?”

Brandon played back the sequence but sped it up and explained, “If you are a kid, and you’re out having fun with your Dad, something is wrong if you look nervous and scared. What father would take their kid out on a hot summer day wearing a suit?”

I said, “Brandon is a pretty smart cookie Judge. That’s what made us start looking at them. Ritchie Barn’s boys recognized Matty from a milk carton. That’s when we started pushing buttons and making calls.”

Brandon said, “We know why he was nervous. That man had a pistol. The way the police detectives took him and cuffed him, there was no way he could use it.” Brandon replayed the end of the encounter, so she could see what had happened.

On seeing Rebel, the Judge said, “That’s the Ashcraft boy. He’s distracting the man.”

Brandon said, “Rebel’s move was key to keeping the guy distracted long enough for the Detectives to arrive and disarm him safely. Billy, Robbie and Rebel are the heroes of this little drama.”

Judge Vinson looked at me and said, “I’ve seen Rebel Ashcraft a few times for minor stuff like fighting and shoplifting. Seeing him put himself in danger to help another boy is a side of him I haven’t seen. The school psychologist has in his record that he has Opposition-Defiant Disorder. Are you taking him under your wing?”

Brandon laughed and said, “Tim has huge wings your Honor. I go to school with Rebel, and yeah, he’s a handful. He’s not stupid, but he’s always angry and irritable. There were rumors that his mother is a bad drunk. If anyone can tame Rebel, it would be Tim.”

Judge Vinson nodded and said, “I think you’re the first adult male authority figure that Rebel hasn’t cussed out or kicked in the shin.”

I said, “What is going on with Rebel is for him to tell, and he told me plenty. Whatever you decide, I’ll help. If you order Mrs. Ashcraft into a long-term rehab, and she completes it successfully, I’ll give her the same deal I gave Maria Ramano. Maria has her hands full and could use the help. Dr. Patrick is setting up an office at my house and will be seeing a number of my kids regularly starting tomorrow.”

Brandon said, “Nobody prompted Rebel to do that. We didn’t even know he was gone until he showed up on cameras. He saw that kid was in trouble, went to help and was smart about it. I like that side of Rebel. He’s good people.”

Judge Vinson smiled and said, “A common mistake made with Opposition-Defiant kids is that they hate everybody. They decide who they like and will respond to and, he obviously likes you Tim. I’m going to have papers drawn up on the mother. I’ll give her your deal: rehab and a job or losing custody altogether. You are the first male authority figure Rebel has responded to positively that I know of. We need to use that to bring him back from the anti-social course he’s been on. Now Tim, I need to see Matthew and Rebel.”

I stood and said, “Detective Monroe is talking to them in what we call the Dark Room. Follow me.”

The Judge raised her eyebrow when we entered the room and I said, “The kids are comfortable in here. One of them said it’s like his room at home.”

She said, “Good. If they’re at ease they will be easier to talk to.”

When we went in the room, Rebel stood. Billy and Robbie were sitting next to Matty on the couch. I had not gotten much of a look at Matty, but it was obvious that he was a lot more relaxed than he had been on camera.

I said, “Judge Vinson wants to speak to Rebel and Matty. Billy, Robbie I’m proud of you. Let’s give the Judge the room.”

Billy and Robbie were as cute as ever. They both hugged Matty and Billy said, “We’re glad you’re OK. I hope you can stick around and play some.”

Matty grinned at them and said, “I’d like that. Thanks for recognizing me.”

Out in the hall, Robbie and Billy started to scoot off toward the game machines, but I said, “Whoa there. I want to talk to you two.”

We went in the employee lounge. I sat on the couch between Billy and Robbie, put my arms around them and said, “You two did really well today, and I’m proud of you.”

Robbie said, “I’m glad we could get Matty away from that man. He was scared.”

“I have a job for you two.”

They looked surprised and Billy asked, “Us?”

“Yes. Since you will be here a lot, I’ve got a job for you two. I want you to be my undercover men: anybody that messes with the little kids, and they don’t like it, you let me, Randy, Ritchie or Danny know about it. In return, I’ll give you a hundred a week, all the tokens you want and lunch or dinner from the kitchen. Deal?”

Robbie said, “Cool! What do you mean by ‘mess with’?”

I said, “If a grown up or older kid bullies them, pushes them around, takes their money or tries to force them to do sex stuff. Don’t tell anyone but Ritchie you are my undercover guys.”

Billy said, “I gave a blow job to one of the junior high boys today.”

I said, “Did he make you?”

Billy said, “No, I wanted to. He’s nice and has a big one. He gave me one too.”

I said, “That’s… OK. I mean if they try to make you, and you don’t want to. Understand?”

They both nodded.

Billy said, “We’re both pretty happy with you too. Last night, Tracy was different. Instead of wanting me to suck his wiener, he sucked mine. He kept at it, it felt better and better then, it started feeling wonderful, and I spurted.”

“Congratulations. That’s a little early but not unheard of for a sixth grader.”

Robbie said, “He did it to me too. It felt super but I didn’t spurt. Tracy said you talked to him and told him how to make it feel so good. Now I know why he likes it so much. Thanks.”

“He only owes you both about a hundred now, right?”

Billy laughed and said, “Something like that. Is Sean Tracy’s boyfriend?”

“I don’t know. What do you think?”

Robbie said, “It would be good if he was. Sean is nice, cute, and he’s never mean.”

I said, “You know you have to keep that quiet. He’s a friend of Ritchie that helps keep an eye on you sometimes” and winked.

Billy said, “Oh. I get it. That’s cool. I might need a little help to remember.”

“What do you need Billy?”

He grinned and asked, “Could you hook me up like you did with Tracy?”

Robbie added, “Yeah, me too.”

“Maybe. You’ll have to be patient. Can you do that?”

They both nodded vigorously and hugged my neck. Now, I needed to figure out who would be a good fit for Billy the puberty prodigy and little Robbie.

xi.

Back in the business end of the Game Zone, we were out of empty cash cartridges. That was a very nice problem to have. I had Sean come in the office to help me sort bills and run them through the counter.

Sean asked, “Is this good?”

I said, “It’s spectacular. We have enough cash cartridges for about ten thousand dollars. We’ve been open since ten, and we’re down to our last one by three o’clock. I hired you to work at this level Sean. I want you to be able to run a shift by yourself. Think you can handle it?”

“That’s a little intimidating.”

“You’re going to be eighteen soon so, you are one of our older guys. I’ve been putting the older guys into positions of leadership.”

He looked puzzled and asked, “Me? I’m just...”

“At some point, every leader who’s ever been was just a kid, a freshman or fearful and had doubts. Sometimes it takes someone having faith in you. Other times it takes coaching and preparation. I see something in you Sean. I’ve got a nose for talent, and you’ve got it. You can be someone; I believe in you, and I am willing to help you get there.”

Sean was quiet as he sorted the bills and asked meekly, “Do you really think so? I mean, come on. I’m so pathetic I fell for a thirteen-year-old.”

“Things have not always been as they are now. In some stories about Alexander the Great, his lover Hephaestion was five years his junior. Many Romans believed it was good for a man’s health to bed boys. Look up the myths of Hyacinthus and Apollo or David and Jonathon. The laws are to protect kids against abuse but, in many ways, they are contrary to human nature. Your affection for Tracy isn’t so weird or perverted.

“Don’t get me wrong: if someone is abusing a kid, I’ll beat their ass into a bloody puddle and let the cops scrape them up with a spatula. What I saw this morning wasn’t abuse. It was tender, gentle and beautiful. You were holding Tracy in your arms like he was precious and special. The problem with our laws is they are a blunt instrument like a hammer instead of a surgical instrument like a scalpel. It is a hammer and every problem it encounters is a nail to be pounded. I don’t want to see you pounded Sean. You’re a good kid, and it would kill Tracy.”

Sean said, “Thanks Tim. All of your guys say you are good to talk to.”

I asked, “So. Are you one of mine?”

Sean put his elbows on the table and his chin in his hand and said, “I’m not sure why you would want me but, I’m lucky and grateful that you care about me.”

“Low self-esteem is common among young bi and gay people. I don’t know if you had a father around growing up but if he was absent, that makes matters worse.”

Sean said, “My mother has always been angry at my father. She forbid that he have anything to do with me. I’m not sure what it was about but, she isn’t entirely rational about it. I know he supported us financially. She just had a grudge about something.”

I said, “Do the math Sean. She was sixteen when she had you and, was probably fifteen when you were conceived. Do you want to meet him?”

Sean was quiet for a moment and finally said, “Yes and no. I’m curious but not now. Mom is not doing well, and I don’t want to stress her; maybe after she has passed.”

I put a hand on his shoulder and said, “We can’t magically undo the past but, we can improve the future.”

He rubbed his eyes, sniffed suspiciously and said, “Thanks Tim. Your house full of crazy kids beats the hell out of my empty apartment. It sounds like as much fun as working here. I’m in.”

We continued to work and got the bills sorted and strapped, and even got the coins all rolled up when there was a knock on the office door.

When I opened it the Judge's eyes widened, and she said, “My goodness! I didn’t know a business like this could be so lucrative.”

I said, “It’s mostly small bills, so it looks a lot more impressive than it really is. How can I help you?”

She said, “Finish up what you are doing, and please see me in the... Dark Room?”

“Yes Mam. I won’t be long.”

Sean and I bagged the bills and the coins, noted how much was in hand and locked it all away in a couple of bankers boxes in the secure storage closet in the back of the office.

When Sean saw the closet, he smiled and said, “That trick you played on Tracy was funny.”

“He told you about it?”

Sean said, “Yeah. It was good for him too. He needed some friends his age.”

“So do you, and it’s going to happen for you. We won’t break you and Tracy up but don’t be surprised if you become more of a big brother to him and less of a red-hot lover as you both grow up and branch out.”

I hugged Sean and said, “Day shift is about done. Ride back to the house with the guys and get some rest. I’ll be home to eat, take a nap and come back to close.”

Tracy asked, “After supper, would you mind taking me to see Mom? I’d like for her to meet you. She’s not going to last long, and I think it would be good for her to know that I landed somewhere good.”

“Of course Sean.”

xii.

I joined the Judge in the Dark Room with Rebel and Matty. It didn’t seem quite right with the regular lights on.

Rebel was… Rebel: a cute, intelligent boy but very independent with a mind of his own. I had known the type, and they were almost always in trouble. They were often labeled things like Opposition-Defiant because they weren’t round or square and resisted being shoved in any kind of hole. You had to win their respect and consent because ordering them never, ever works.

Matty looked terrible. His eyes were red, and it was obvious that he had a rough time. It occurred to me that I had no idea what he had been through. I sat down beside Matty opposite Rebel, and Detective Monroe entered behind me.

Once I got settled I asked, “How can I help Judge Vinson?”

The Judge said, “I doubt you know what happened to Matty but, it’s been pretty ugly. Last year during the Christmas Holidays, Matty’s father confronted Jacob Cole for molesting him. Cole shot and killed Matty’s mother and father in front of him, withdrew their savings and has been on the run ever since.”

“Matty’s problem is he has no parents to go back to. He has a paternal grandmother in a nursing home and his maternal grandfather and a grandmother but, the grandmother is wheel-chair bound. The grandfather can’t come immediately. Matty needs to see Dr. Chang and Patrick tomorrow. He may need to talk to the detectives some more. If I may impose upon you to take custody of Matty temporarily, I think he would be more comfortable with your boys than any emergency foster care situation we could arrange on short notice.”

I asked, “Is that OK with you Matty?”

He sat there for a moment and said, “Thank you for asking and not just telling me. Yes. I’d like to stay with Rebel and Cole and Billy and Robbie. They’re all really nice and so are you.”

“Thank you, Matty. We have another Matthew so; don’t be surprised if they call you Little Matt. You’ll like him. He’s silly.”

Matty laughed and the Judge and Detective raised their eyebrows. I said, “Go play with Billy and Robbie and there’s another boy named Karl about your age that is nice too. If anything makes you scared, go to one of the boys in a Game Zone t-shirt. We’ll take care of you.” I handed him one of the little Game Zone promotional baggies full of tokens. Matty got up, hugged me fiercely and left the room to go play without a nut with a gun hovering over him for the first time in months.

Monroe said, “I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it. Everything that little guy has been through, you had him laughing and smiling. That’s remarkable.”

Judge Vinson said, “Tim truly is gifted. I’ve seen it before in a rare social worker or two. They just know how to handle boys. It’s not something that can be taught. Now we get to you Rebel.”

Rebel stuck his jaw out and looked like he was preparing himself for a whipping.

Detective Monroe said, “We just picked your mother up for her second DUI, and we found a bunch of pills in her car. She’s in trouble Rebel.”

Rebel said, “That was predictable. She got some money, so off she went to the liquor store.”

Judge Vinson said sadly, “You know she’s an alcoholic, and she can’t take care of you. You’ve been taking care of her. Tim has offered me a solution that will put you in a much better position Rebel. He wants you…”

Rebel jumped in my lap and hugged my neck. I said, “Easy there, Tiger. Never interrupt a Judge. You might miss something important.” Rebel vibrated with excitement in my lap and the Judge smiled.

She said, “I think we can take that as Rebel approves of the situation. As I was saying Rebel, Tim wants to take care of you, and he has offered your Mother a way out. If she goes to a long-term rehab and sobers up, he’s offered her a good job. She can land on her feet and have a life again.”

Now the ornery little cuss that didn’t take crap off anybody was hiding his face in my shirt sobbing.

Judge Vinson said, “I’ll expect him to see Chang and Patrick tomorrow with Matty.”

Detective Monroe said, “Judge, this place has an excellent kitchen. Could I buy you a hot dog?”

“I’d be delighted.”

They left me alone with Rebel still silently sobbing on my shirt. I stood and flipped the lights back to black light and sat on the couch and held him for a while. I let him get it out of his system.

“Are you OK Rebel?”

“Uh huh. Better than ever. She said you wanted me.”

“I do. I know your secret. Behind your tough guy persona, you’re a really sweet kid. I saw how brave and smart you are when you went and stalled that guy for Matty, a kid you didn’t even know. You’re amazing Rebel, and I’m glad to have you.”

That started him sobbing again but it soon abated. He choked out, “Nobody has ever wanted me. You would have to be dumb to want me. I’m always trouble. I get in fights. I steal stuff. I get detention…”

“You do all of that because you don’t get the attention you need, Rebel. I’m going to fix that. You’ll have umpteen brothers that’ll love you to pieces. No one will force you to do anything, and you won’t have to trick to eat. You won’t have to get in trouble to get attention. We’ll be there for you.”

All the tension in Rebel eased. It drained out of him like air in a balloon. He said, “My name isn’t really Rebel. That’s just what people call me. My real name is Joey.” Everything was different about him, even the sound of his voice. He sounded younger and not so tough and cocky.

I said, “Nice to meet you Joey. We need to go by your house to get your things.”

He said, “I don’t want to go there. Bad things happen there.”

I got a very uneasy feeling and asked, “Where is Rebel?”

Joey’s voice answered, “Rebel is sleeping now that we’re safe. Rebel is strong and brave and protects us. He’s everything that I just wish I was. I’m just Joey. I’m little and scared all the time. I haven’t been out in a long, long time. Rebel says you’re our new Daddy? Is it true?”

“Yes baby, I am.”

“Rebel won’t have to do… that stuff anymore?”

“No baby, not unless he just wants to with someone he likes.”

Joey began to cry. It wasn’t Rebel. Rebel would never weep, wail and sob out loud. It was Joey. I knew it was Joey, the sweet little boy inside the armor he had created to protect himself called Rebel.

I said, “Joey, you and Rebel will be all right”, even if I wasn’t so sure it was true. “I will love and protect you and give you brothers who will do the same. You won’t have to be alone and afraid anymore.”

Joey’s voice said, “I love you Daddy.”

Rebel’s voice added, “I love you too.”

I said, “I lucked out. I got two amazing boys for the price of one.”

Maybe it would be OK. I was grateful that Doctor Patrick would be starting his sessions tomorrow.

xiv.

After some time sitting in my lap and talking, Rebel/Joey felt better, so he went off to play with his new pals. David Bridges (the contractor) arrived, and I went in the kitchen to find Roderick, James, Marcus and Grant cleaning up the kitchen for the next shift. I asked Roderick to walk with me and David.

Roderick said, “That was very cool the way we were able to get Matty away from that guy.”

David was not in on the news and as we walked to the house to the vacant house next door, we filled him in on the big excitement of the afternoon.

We walked up to the front door and David produced a key. He opened the front door and we went inside. Roderick asked, “Tim, what am I doing here?”

I said, “This house is a steal. If it’s not falling in, I can get it for under thirty. I wanted you to see it because, it’s close enough to the Game Zone to be a staging area for our crew. They can come here between shifts, rest, get a shower and relax. When we put in your restaurant, you’ll want to be close to it, right?”

David asked, “How would you and your brothers like to live here?”

Roderick was quiet and looked around.

David said, “It doesn’t look like much now but give me a week or so. We can fix most major issues, paint, rewire where necessary, put on a new roof and turn this place into the nicest house on the street.”

Roderick said, “I really like living at your place. It’s good for James and Marcus.”

“I’m not throwing you out. You could live in both places. Having this house gives us options. Let’s look at the kitchen and then do a walk through upstairs.”

Roderick fell in love with the kitchen— that sold him on the place. It was big, open and bright with a window over the kitchen sink.

In addition to the kitchen and dining room, there was a big family room, two baths, two bedrooms and a big family room on the first floor.

Upstairs there were five bedrooms, two baths and an old-fashioned sitting room.

David said, “We can do a makeover on this house and double, maybe even triple its value.”

The backyard was a jungle, but that could be tamed. There were old shade trees, a big shed and a long back porch. On the side of the house was a driveway and a garage.

I asked, “David, what do you think?”

“I don’t see anything too bad. We’ll want to update a lot of the fixtures. Put in screen rooms front and back, put in a pool, have Les get the yard in shape and this place will go for seventy easy.”

“Roderick, what do you think?”

“I don’t know. I like being close to you. It's chaos sometimes but I love the family. Let me think about it and talk to James and Marcus.”

“Fair enough. Just bear in mind, you won’t be missing the guys. They’ll be in and out all the time. Go ahead and catch the van back to the house, and I’ll see you at supper.”

Roderick departed and David and I continued to walk around looking the place over. Finally, I asked, “David, why is there a glory hole in the employee restroom?”

He laughed and said, “The short answer is nostalgia. I got my very first blow job at that glory hole. The pharmacist who ran the place had three women in the back with him. No one but him and people he directed to it ever went there. Their employee women’s room is where the locker room is now with a break room in the middle. In the original plan, the employee restrooms opened onto the main hall. The public restrooms are where they were in the old floor plan.”

“Old man Vinderman that ran the pharmacy was a cock hound. I heard from one of my buddies that you could get a BJ there. I didn’t really believe it but, was curious. My Mom got the flu, and I went in to fill her prescriptions. I handed him the prescriptions, and he said they would be about twenty minutes. I asked for the restroom, and he pointed at that one. I went to a urinal and saw writing on the wall— BJ in the stalls. I heard him come in and go in the stall against the wall. I was hard as a nail and I went into the inside stall and saw fingers holding a twenty poking through the hole.

Old man Vinderman didn’t have a tooth in his head. He took out his dentures and gave me an incredible BJ through that hole. I started going there every few weeks. I even saw other guys from school slip into that bathroom. He retired before I met you and the place closed not long after. Anyway, that’s why the hole is still there. We uhhh… overlooked fixing it.”

I was laughing so hard by the end of his story I was nearly crying… a toothless old pharmacist blowing the neighborhood kids. Kind of gross, but I probably would have tried it. Shit. I know I would have tried it.

David asked, “Have you noticed it getting any use?”

“I don’t think so. Our crew is a little young to know about glory holes.”

David said, “I told Cole and Toby about it on the trip. They got a chuckle out of it. Cole said some guys would stick it anywhere.”

“Cole is a sharp one. Come over about supper time. We’re frying catfish and hush puppies. Oh, I hired one of your cousins— little David Bridges and his buddy Todd.”

“That’s cool. Sammy, Little Dave’s Dad, will be happy. They’re both fifteen, big for their age and horn dogs. If they haven’t made a pass at you already, expect one. I took them down the lake to our cabin fishing this spring. They’re noisier than they think they are— heck, they shook the building. Would you do me a favor? They seriously need 'the talk' but, I’m not nearly as good at it as you. Let them know when we were kids, we did stuff. You might even tell him about the glory hole.”

“Sure Dave. They’ll be thrilled that you are cool. I’ve got to get back to get the night shift settled in. What is your plan for this place?”

Dave said, “I send my inspector out to make a punch list, and we’ll go from there. While we’re doing the concrete work at the St. Luke’s Community Center, that’ll free up some of the guys for the house. I don’t think it’ll take very long, but you never know what you’ll run into in old buildings. From what I’ve seen though, it shouldn’t be too bad.”

xv.

I came back in the Game Zone by the front door. Lee and Danny were manning the front. Lee said, “I think most of the Lakeside Vikings football team is here. They are all interested in Ray.”

I said, “He worked day shift and just left.”

Lee asked, “Did we get three more today?”

“Yeah, Sean Yelverton, Rebel Ashcraft and Matty Lamb. One of Ritchie’s boys recognized Matty from a milk carton of all things and the cops nabbed the creep that took him right behind the Pac-Man machine. Rebel’s Mom got another DUI and is going away to rehab for a while. Sean is seventeen and a driver so we need him. The judge knows I’m good at taking care of strays. Anything going on we need to watch?”

Lee shrugged and said, “So far, so good.”

I went walking through and met Toby talking to one of the Lakeview Vikings. He was wearing jersey number twenty-two. I asked, “What position do you play?”

“I play safety and halfback, and Toby encourages my scribblings.”

Toby said, “Leo will be a sophomore and, scribblings? They’re good Leo.”

Leo grinned and said, “Compared to your stuff, you’re being kind.” He looked at me and asked, “Is it true that you’re Woody… I mean Ray’s foster Dad?”

“Yeah. He was on the day shift.”

Leo said, “I’m glad for him. His Uncle gave me the creeps. One day, I saw Ray working in his yard and stopped to talk. The guy looked at me so cold, I just left.”

“Believe me Leo, you didn’t want anything to do with him. Are you enjoying the place?”

“It’s fun”, he smiled and elbowed Toby. “I’m seeing a lot of the nicest kids from school here in green shirts and the food is great.”

I continued to mingle and ran into Arron and Adam in the kitchen. A tall kid with the jersey number eighty-eight was flirting with Aaron. When I got a good look at him, I was sure that Aaron didn’t mind at all.

As I passed the public men’s room, I smelled weed, turned in and caught three boys wearing jersey numbers, 24, 44 and 87 had just started smoking a joint. Number 87 was about to ditch it in the urinal and I said, “Don’t waste it. Come with me.”

They followed me back down the hall to the loading dock and the old incinerator. I turned on the fan and let them finish their joint and blow the smoke in where it was vented out, up and away.

I said, “Guys, I used to play video games high all the time, but I can’t have you getting caught by little kids. Smoke out before. The food and the music is good, the games cheap, and we’ll look after you. OK?”

Number 87 smiled and said, “Bobby and Tommy said you were really cool. I’m Frazier and this is Watts and Sims. We love this place. Thanks for letting us finish that instead of wasting it.”

“I’d be a dumb ass for alienating some of my best customers: stoned, hungry kids playing video games. Let me show you something.”

They followed me into the Dark Room and loved it. I said, “If you get high and need to relax and get off your feet, you can come back here for a while.”

Frazier said, “This place is really cool. We hear that you’ve got cameras and stuff?”

“Yes we do but, it’s more about keeping creeps from messing with kids than busting you. I used to play for Lakewood. How do you think you’ll do this year?”

Watts #44 said, “We’re going to suck. We’ve got six good seniors and they’re all linemen. Everybody else will be sophomores or juniors. Maybe next year.”

I asked, “Is Coach Carlson still running the wishbone?”

Sims #24 answered, “Yeah. He’ll probably run a four-three defense too.”

I asked, “Do y’all want to win?”

They all looked at me like I had been smoking something. Frazier said, “Yeah but, how. We just don’t have the horses.”

“Two-a-days will start in late July. Coach can’t work you before then. That’s always a lot more about conditioning than football. What if you showed up for two-a-days already in condition?”

Sims asked, “How?”

“The guy who runs the gym next door is an old friend of mine. You guys come in the morning, do a couple of hours there and when two-a-days start, you won’t be sucking wind. Look, I’m Ray’s new foster Dad. I want you guys to do well. If Coach Carlson doesn’t have to spend most of his practice time getting you guys in shape, he can spend more time working on your schemes.”

“Won’t that cost us?”

“Nope. I’ll take care of it. I’ll also feed you lunch when you are done.”

Frazier said, “I’m in.”

The other two boys nodded.

I said, “Talk to the rest of your teammates. I can’t guarantee you’ll win State but, you won’t suck. Being in good condition could be the edge you need to win the close ones.”

Sims and Watts jumped up and headed for the door but Frazier stayed.

I asked, “What’s on your mind?

He said, “I don’t want to make you mad, but there’s a rumor that you’re gay.”

I said, “Not with kids if that’s what worries you.”

He blushed in the black light and stuttered, “Well damn. Uh… I’m sorry. I mean… uhh…”

“It’s ok. You didn’t upset me.”

Frazier said, “It’s hard for me to talk about but, I’m bi. Shit. Who am I kidding? I’m queer as a football bat. Could I talk to you about it?”

“Sure. Just know that I’m not the sort that is going to try anything with you.”

He grinned and said, “Not even a mercy blow job?” He lifted his jersey and his gym shorts were straining to keep a large, throbbing boner from escaping.

“I can’t but, I might be able to find someone who can. If I do will you keep it to yourself and not cause troubles for him at school?”

Frazier said, “No way. I’d probably fall in love.”

“If I hook you up, it’s going to be somebody I’m looking out for. Treat them right or we’ll have a problem.”

Frazier said, “I promise.”

Just as I stepped out in the hall to see who was around, Brian came through the bead barrier. He went into the employee lounge and I followed him into the bathroom where he took a leak.

I asked, “Do you know a kid about your age named Frazier?”

He said, “Yeah, I think so.”

“He made a pass at me, and he’s in the Dark Room with a huge throbbing boner. Are you interested?”

Brian said, “Please tell me his first name is Stacy.”

“I didn’t catch his first name.”

Brian finished and flushed. I said, “Follow me. I’ll let you get a look at him before you decide.”

He followed me into the shop. It was dark, and he could see Frazier sitting on the couch. He was sitting adjusting himself like boys do when they have an uncomfortable boner.

Brian said, “Heck yeah! I’ve liked Stacy for a long time. I never thought he would though.”

“What about Lance?”

Brian said, “He won’t mind as long as I don’t let him fuck me. That is his when I’m ready.”

I put an arm around him, “Good boy.”

Brian followed me into the Dark Room and Stacy Frazier’s face broke into a big smile. He said, “Brian!? I never thought...”

Brian said, “Me either. This is so cool.” Brian sat beside Stacy on the couch, both of the boys blushing.

I said, “OK you crazy kids. As much as this would make great porn, I’ll give you two some privacy. This door latches from the inside.”

I left them in the Dark Room, and walked around the corner to take a peek. They hadn’t ripped each other’s clothes off, but were sitting very close together with their arms over each other’s shoulders talking quietly. Stacy Frazier was much taller than Brian but, they were the same age. They appeared to have known each other for years. They both had the call of the wild but, never figured the other would be interested. I had to wonder how often that must happen.

I heard the door to the employee break room open and close.

I stuck my head in the office and Frank was watching the cameras. I said, “Hey babe, I thought you were on day.”

He said, “I am. I’m just here for fun. Ray and his pals all dress up nicely. I took them by Stacy’s Style too. They look even better without that casual shag look they had. Oh, I met Rebel and Matty before I came over. They’re so cute it’s ridiculous and Sean… Please let me dress him!”

“You’ll get your shot at dressing him tomorrow, and thanks for coming in just for fun.”

Frank said, “It looks like romance is breaking out all over. Brian in the Dark Room and Toby in the employee lounge. Oh, and look at the guys up front.”

Frank was right. The Lakeview Vikings appeared to be completely and totally charmed by our staff. All the boys on duty had one or two of the football players chatting them up. Even little Adam seemed to have an admirer and the boy talking to Aaron might as well have been drooling. Jo-Jo and Kelly were surrounded by a little swarm.

I said, “You want to have some fun?”

Frank said, “With yummy muscular jock kids? I can imagine.”

“I’ll man the cameras; you go accidentally blunder into Toby and the halfback in the employee lounge. Give them the talk, give them a hug. We love you, just be careful.”

Frank said, “We’ll see. If I don’t come back in ten minutes, come rescue me.”

xvi.

I sat back and watched the cameras and looked at the time. It was getting on toward four. Someone was coming down the hall and, it was Little David Bridges by himself. He was smiling, wearing a Pink Floyd t-shirt and had worked the day shift. He came right to the office and knocked on the door.

Little David Bridges was a misnomer. He got that tag to avoid confusion with his older cousin but was pushing six feet hard and was already taller than me.

I opened up and noticed that he really did look like a younger version of his cousin. David was just a little older when we first met. The door closed, and he hugged me like a long-lost friend.

I said, “Thanks Dave. What was that for?”

He said, “My Dad hasn’t been this happy with me since I won the fifth grade science fair. Big Dave came over just as I got home and told my Dad that you would make a great first boss. Thanks, Tim, it meant a lot to me. Oh, and expect a big hug from Todd too.”

“I saw Big Dave this afternoon. He let slip that you are Todd are big, good-looking kids but, only fifteen.”

Little Dave flashed me and said, “I’ve got the famous Bridges horse-cock just like my Dad and my cousin.”

“Yikes! Put that thing up before you put somebody’s eye out with it.” I wrestled with him, avoiding that big cock that had absolutely no business at all belonging to a fifteen-year-old, and pulled him into my lap.

I said, “There’s something you need to know Little Dave, uhhh… That doesn’t seem to fit so well anymore. When Big Dave and I were talking this afternoon, he let me know that he heard you and Todd when he took you fishing at the cabin a few months ago.” Little Dave blushed at that. “He wasn’t sure how to bring it up without it being incredibly awkward but, he’s cool about it.”

David looked shocked and said, “Really? He doesn’t care?”

“Oh, he cares but, it would be really hypocritical of him to bust you for that. When we were kids, I sucked his famous Bridges horse-cock every chance I got. I loved him, and he treated me like a little brother. He wanted you to know that he’s cool.”

“Why didn’t he tell me himself?”, Little Dave asked.

“It’s hard for him to talk about it being married with kids on the way. He knew I’d be better at it than he would. Next time you see him, tell him that we talked. He’ll know, and it’ll make you closer.”

“Why can’t we do it? I’d never tell.”

“You look so much like Big Dave did when we were kids, I’m tempted to give you a blow job just for old-time sake.”

He grinned a grin of pure mischief and said, “Sounds like a good idea to me. I’ve got the kind of boner that won’t go away until I cum.”

I chuckled and said, “Big Dave used to get those.” I looked up at the monitor and saw Kelly, Jo-Jo and two more of the football players entering the employee lounge.

I said, “You need to get lucky Dave?”

“It sure wouldn’t hurt.”

“Go to the employee lounge and see what you can get into.”

I went around to the future workshop and took a peek and see how Stacy and Brian were doing. They had been in there a while and it looked like they were done. They were just sitting on the couch, very close and talking.

I knocked on the door and after a beat, Brian opened it. I went in and noticed that aroma of jizz and teen hormones. It was actually a little warm in there.

I asked, “How are you guys doing?”

They both answered, “Great!”

I said, “OK, breaks over, back to work.”

They both hugged me as they went up front and Stacy asked, “Did you just hire me?”

“So you noticed that did you. You want a spot?”

He said, “Football is coming up.”

“I know. We’ll be doing weekends and afternoons once school starts. You’ll have a spot if you want it. For now, your job is to get your team motivated to get in condition for football starting Monday at Anders Gym.”

I knocked on the door of the employee lounge and Little Dave opened it. I couldn’t tell if anything had happened. That sex smell wasn’t apparent. Everyone in the room had big smiles and were laughing. Frank was sitting between Jo-Jo and Kelly and the two football players I hadn’t met yet. I sat beside Little Dave and said, “How are you guys doing? Having fun?”

Frank said, “Sorry, no orgy but, we’ve got some new friends. Meet Don and Sammy.”

“New friends are good. Nice to meet you guys.”

Don was built like a runner and was hyper or excited. He gushed out, “I’m on the track team with Kelly. Do you really run this place? You look like you could be in college. Are you really Ray’s foster Dad?”

I pat him on the arm and said, “Easy Don, I’m twenty-four and graduated from college a couple of years ago. After some of the incidents in town recently, I wanted to give you guys a place where you could hang without creeps and nutcases bothering you. I’m Ray’s foster Dad, and Frank here is his half-brother. Hopefully, since I’m not actually a fossil, I can relate to you guys better than someone who is an ancient thirty or forty.”

Sammy, one of the bigger boys and wearing number sixty-six asked nervously, “Is it true that you are gay?”

I smiled, grabbed Frank, kissed him and said, “You have nothing to worry about. I belong to Frank.”

Frank said, “Yes he does.”

Jo-Jo pouted and said, “Dammit.”

Sammy said, “Uhhh… could we talk to you about stuff sometime?”

“Sure Sammy. I live right beside Dockside Park. If I’m not here, I’m there. That park is reopening tomorrow. You should check it out. Be sure to bring a swimsuit.”

We talked for a few minutes. The kids went back up front, Frank went back to the cameras, and I was left with David sitting awkwardly on the couch. It was clear he had one of those boners that just wouldn’t quit.

I said, “You look uncomfortable.”

He blushed and I said, “Yeah…”

“Have you ever heard of glory holes David?”

He said, “Is it a church thing?”

I laughed harder than I should have and said, “Not hardly. Have you ever been in a restroom with a hole in the partition?”

David thought for a moment and said, “Yeah. There’s one in the basement of Sears in the old mall in DeKalb and I saw one in a rest area when we went to Six Flags last summer.”

“Some people use them for blow jobs; more in the past than they do now.”

Little Dave looked confused and asked, “Really? Why?”

“Yes, really. Why is the same reason you don’t tell everybody you like cock, and plenty of people who want to, don't know whom to ask. Someone that wants to suck cock will go in and sit on one of the thrones like he’s taking a dump. If he sees something he likes, he’ll put a finger or some money through the hole or tap his foot. It used to be how many people used to get together. It’s a lot less popular now than it used to be now that you can catch stuff that you can’t get rid of with a shot.”

David said, “I’d be afraid to do that. I wouldn’t want to put my dick in a hole with a stranger.”

“Both parties are there for fun and games. One of the biggest reasons it used to be so popular was it was deniable.”

“What does that mean?”

“You were just there for a piss or a dump. You had no idea blow jobs were happening, right? Get it?”

David said, “Ohhh.”

I said, “Do you want to see one?”

“Really? There’s one here?”

“Sure. I’ll show it to you.”

We went into the employee rest room and I showed him the hole in the partition and said, “Your cousin got his very first blow job right here. He left it just like it was. The guy that ran this place when it was a pharmacy liked cock. David was in junior high and had those big, demanding boners like you get. The pharmacist had this can to himself. When David figured it out, he came in here to get his rocks off every couple of weeks.”

David said, “I could sure use a place like that.”

He followed me back into the lounge and I said, “Glory holes can be dangerous, and you shouldn’t even think of using one it unless it is a place you know is safe. There are all sorts of diseases, weirdos and cops will arrest you if they catch you. If you do find a safe glory hole, keep it a closely guarded secret because if too many people know about it, that will ruin it. Cops and creeps both look for them.”

As David watched, I latched the door to the lounge and said, “You know where a safe one is now. So if you’ll do a favor for me, I’ll help you with your blue balls.”

He smirked and said, “What do you need?”

“There’s a kid here we call Little Karl. He’s shy but, he’s a nice boy and pretty cute. You don’t have to have wet, sloppy sex but, he could use a pal.”

David said, “Done. I like Karl. He’s going to be a seventh grader next year. He’s in Todd’s little brother's class, and he’s smart.”

"Todd's got a little brother?"

David wrinkled his nose and replied, "His name is Stevie. You've seen him, he was around this morning. You wouldn't know that he's Todd's brother. They have different fathers. They're cool and everything but his mother is..." David took his finger and moved it around his ear in circles to symbolize crazy.

I raised an eyebrow and said, "That bad?"

He nodded and said, "You should probably talk to him about it."

I went into the employee restroom, pulled down the lid and sat on the can. I heard the door open, and he came into the opposite stall. I was shocked when he put his fingers in the hole signaling that he wanted cock.

Glory holes weren’t really my thing. There was one at the university I attended. I explored it out of curiosity but, not used its services. The times had changed, and with the onslaught of AIDS, they were seriously out of style. This one was safe and only friends could get to it. The idea appealed to me, so I pulled out my cock and I shoved it through.

I wasn’t sure what to expect of Little Dave but, I was pleasantly surprised. He was pretty good and had a real taste for it. He didn’t let up or even act like he wanted to trade. I quickly got into the spirit of things and gripped the top of the partition. It was a big glory hole so there was no trouble for Little Dave to get at my balls. He stroked my cock as he licked my balls, and it was clear the boy wanted to taste cum.

I said softly, “I’m getting close”, which only incited him. When I came, he caught every drop and continued to milk it until I was completely done.

When it was his turn, he came a copious volume and almost immediately. I stayed with it and a couple of minutes later I was rewarded with a second, if less spectacular, eruption that tamed his famous Bridges horse-cock for now.

We both cleaned up a bit with toilet paper, flushed and went back out to the employee lounge.

Little Dave was grinning ear to ear, wrapped me in a hug and said, “That was so hot. Thank you.”

“That was special just for you. I know how demanding those famous Bridges horse-cocks can be, and yours might be even bigger than your cousin's when all is said. You were good. I know that beast you’re packing needs regular attention. I’ll help out. Just be cool about it. I know you have to be feeling better.”

“Oh God yes. I was hurting for it. I would have never believed it but, the glory hole thing seems to make it even hotter.”

“Some people really like them. They even fuck through them. I don’t like the idea of stranger sex like most glory holes but, if it’s controlled and safe like it is here, it’s cool. Others are going to catch on. What would Todd do if he figures it out?”

Little Dave chuckled and said, “Move in.”

“Your cousin will be at my house for supper. Tony is frying catfish and hushpuppies. Do you want to ride with me? We’ll get you home.”

Little Dave said, “It’s cool. My cousin vouched for you. I could stay over if you don’t mind.”

“Yeah. Ritchie and his little crew will be there. You want me to put in a good word.”

Little Dave blushed and said, “I would like to get to know Tracy better. His little cousins have let it be known that they enjoy playing too.”

I laughed and said, “I’d call them horn-dogs but in this case, they’re horn-puppies. What you are packing would frighten them. Go see if Karl wants to go home and eat with us. I’ll go see about Frank.”

Frank had his truck and Little Karl was delighted to be going with us. We put his bike in the back of the truck. I made a quick stop at Buck’s Sports on Jasper and got uniform necessities for Little Karl. I got a few jocks for David too. He needed them badly. I got swimming suits for them too: a more conservative brand than Speedo but not by much.

When I gave Little Karl his uniform stuff I thought the little guy was going to cry. I hugged him and said, “It only makes sense Karl. You’re there most of the time anyway.”

xvii.

After one more stop at AutoZone, we made it home. Tony had the fryer out on the patio and had everything lined up for supper. Most of the day crew were playing in the pool. Once we got to the gym, Karl and David used the changing room to get into their new swim suits. David used one of his new jocks, and the two boys went out to play with the rest. I noticed that Karl was just as fascinated with Little Dave’s schlong as I had been with his older cousins when I was a 7th grader.

Chris and Marie were doting over Rebel/Joey and Matty in the kitchen. She had made a huge stack of chocolate chip cookies with pecans, and the boys were working on them.

Marie hugged me and said, “They’re precious!”

I said, “That’s probably the first time anyone has called Rebel precious in a long time.”

She looked confused and asked, “Who is Rebel?”

I grinned and said, “Joey is Rebel when he gets his dander up. The little guy has had a rough life. This is the first time he has been able to relax in a long time. Rebel is loud, cocky and brave. The sweet little guy over there destroying your cookies and not having to worry about where his next meal is coming from is Joey. His mother is a bad alcoholic, and got another DUI today. I talked to the Judge about giving her the same deal I’m giving you.”

Marie said, “Let’s be realistic Tim. I know you mean well but, she may or may not stay sober.”

“I know. It’s a crap shoot but, it is really for Joey. She is going to a long-term facility and not some weekend at Malibu crap.”

Marie said, “She should go where I went. I’ll see if some of the people with more sobriety in my AA group can visit with her. I haven’t been sober long enough to be good at that. That was outstanding how you boys rescued Matty. He’s a really sweet boy too. The other kids love them both.”

“I knew they would. They’re good that way. Would you believe a 5th and 6th grader recognized Matty from a milk carton? I’m going to take my prescribed nap before supper.”

I walked over to the table and said, “Chris, are you taking good care of our boys here?”

Joey said, “Chris is really fun. I always wanted a big brother like him.”

Matty added, with a mouth full of cookie, “Yeah. Chris is cool.”

Chris blushed and said, “Awe, thanks guys. You’re pretty cool too.”

“I’m going to take a nap before dinner. I’ll see you guys a little later.”

Upstairs, I lay down and went to sleep quickly. I was disturbed by something a few times but, nothing that would really wake me. When I finally did wake up, I discovered a pile of humanity on my bed. Frank was right beside me. Matty and Joey were in the other side and, Ray, Walt and Juan were on the other side of Frank. I looked at the clock, and it was a little after six-thirty.

I was sort of at a loss for what to do, so I hugged Frank and noticed that his kitten was sitting on Ray’s chest. There was something else Ray and Frank had in common— they both got great big boners when they sleep on their back. No wonder they call him Woody. I heard the little guys giggle, so I turned over and hugged Joey and Matty.

“Hey guys, what’s up?”

Joey said, “We were tired so we decided to take a nap too.”

Matty nodded his agreement and said, “When you’re here, the nightmares don’t come.”

“A Doctor is coming out tomorrow to talk to you. If you’re good and tell him everything bothering you, maybe the nightmares won’t come as often.”

Ray said, “I’m going to try that myself.”

“Dr. Chang recommended a sleeping pill before you go to sleep tonight. It will help you get some rest. I was prescribed them after my Dad died. Now, let’s see about some dinner.”

I wasn’t going to get away that easily and was surprised when Walt followed me downstairs. As I entered my office, he slipped in behind me and closed the door.

“Walt, what’s on your mind buddy?”

“Yesterday when Randy put handcuffs on me that was super-hot.”

I grinned and said, “Did you get a little taste for bondage?”

“I don’t really know. I was high on the E stuff but you and Big Ted were holding me, you weren’t really being rough. Actually, you were being really nice to me. It really turned me on. Juan liked it too. Do you think maybe we could join your harem?”

“I’m sure that can be arranged. That little game we played has more people interested than I thought. Just remember what Dr. Chang told you. Now, come here.”

I drew him into a hug, held him and asked, “How are you feeling?”

“Better knowing that medicine cleared up that nasty in-fuck-tion Pete gave me but, it gave all three of us the runs this afternoon. Thank God that’s over. Doc C warned us it might happen. We aren’t supposed to get fucked for at least ten days bareback.”

“You shouldn’t be doing bareback at all unless you know for a fact your partner is clean.”

Walt said, “How can we know?”

“I’m working on that. That’s why everyone gets tested. Soon we’ll have everyone on the inside proven clean. We can’t afford to let it in. It’s our family. Stick with the program and we’ll all be OK.”

He asked, “Promise?”

“I can’t promise but, we’ll try like hell.”

Walt looked me in the eyes and said, “Holy shit. You were just honest with me. Thank you, Tim.”

“Expect that from me Walt. I know you are new to the family but, that’s what you’ll get. The only time you’ll hear me shade the truth is when there is something awkward that people don’t really need to know or, I’m trying to keep someone out of deep shit.”

Walt said, “Yeah, I’m figuring that out about you. You saved Juan and me from deep shit yesterday. I won’t forget it.”

I released him and said, “Now, I’ve got some work to do. You want to go back to the arcade later?”

Walt said, “I really want to stand here with you holding me. I think I’ll hang out with the guys tonight here.”

When he left and closed the door, I looked in my Rolodex and called Hiram Griggs' private line. He answered on the third ring, “Griggs.”

I said “Mr. Griggs, it’s Tim Shepherd. I hired someone today and got a big surprise when I ran a background check.”

He said, “You hired Sean? Excellent!”

“He’s going to run one of the shifts at the Game Zone. I know management material when I see it. He’s a little shy and needs some coaching but, I think he’s a winner.”

Griggs said, “His mother forbade me from having anything to do with him growing up. I’m delighted that he has come under your influence.”

“I wanted to let you know I’m looking out for him Hiram. He doesn’t hate you but, while his mother still lives, he doesn’t want to stress her. How are you doing for tax shelters?”

He chuckled and said, “I’m constantly looking for new ones.”

“I have a project in mind that we can work on together that’ll be good for a write-off, public relations, and a good excuse to be around Sean. I know you cut and replant a lot of timber land. Be looking for a plot that has been clear-cut near a road with access to power and phone lines. It needs to be of about a hundred acres or more somewhere near the three towns. The police, fire and sheriff’s department for the three cities all have ad hoc training facilities. If we can give them a joint training facility, you, my contractor and I can do a lot of good and be able to write it off.”

Griggs was silent for a moment and said, “We’re looking at harvesting a big stand near Holly Ridge that would be perfect for that. I can’t get to it until September but, I’ll send you some elevation maps of the area I have in mind. Develop your plans and we’ll see what we think about the start of October.”

“I’ll talk to the Sheriff and our Commissioner here in Lakewood to see if they can get some idea about what the police in Rivervine and DeKalb think about it. Meanwhile, I’ll keep an eye on Sean.”

Griggs said, “Thanks Tim. I’ve had to watch him grow up from afar. That’s been really hard.”

“He’s a good one Hiram. I was glad to steal him.”

Tony astonished me with his fish fry. One of his restaurant jobs had been at a country fish house that specialized in catfish and hush puppies. Overnight, our trot lines had paid great dividends including a sixty-seven pound monster that nearly pulled Larry, Tommy and Tony into the lake. We had enough to feed everybody at the house which included a number of Lakeview Vikings and had enough to send to the night shift at the Game Zone. I didn’t know Maria had made pies for dessert.

After dinner, I handed the keys to the Toyota 4X4 to Lee. He expected that to happen so he wasn’t shocked.

Roderick was shocked. His new X-tra cab truck was just what he needed to run out to Aunt Kitty’s and Sam’s Club to pick up food for the Game Zone grill.

The most surprised of them all was Grant. His truck wasn’t new, but it was last year’s model with only twenty thousand miles on it. For a Toyota truck, it wasn’t even broken in good.

Grant said, “Tim, I don’t have a license yet!”

“You will and, having you mobile will be a big help.”

After dinner, I gathered Sean, Little Karl, David and Tracy in the Mustang and headed to Rivervine via the Game Zone to drop off David, Karl and Tracy. Karl hugged me and thanked me for dinner. I told him I’d be back to close.

Tracy figured out I was taking Sean to see his mother and asked if he could go. I said, “Tracy, the place we’re going is a hospice. It’s where very sick people go when there’s nothing else to do for them but keep them comfortable until they pass. I know the place. It’s where my Mom died.”

Sean said, “We won’t be able to stay long and there can only be two visitors.”

Tracy said, “I’ll stay in the car. You’re more than just a friend, and I want to be there for you.”

Sean nodded and scooted over. Once Sean and Tracy were belted in, I drove to Rivervine with my right arm around Sean and Tracy holding his hand. It was a quiet, somber ride.

The hospice was located on the grounds of a nursing home in DeKalb near the hospital. I parked the Mustang as far away from the buildings as I could to avoid disturbing anybody. The Mustang had a nice growl, but she wasn’t loud like a lot of muscle cars. I left the radio on for Tracy, and Sean and I moved toward the entrance.

The nurse on duty greeted Sean and reminded him that they would close at eight. When we arrived at the wing, another nurse greeted us and guided us to Mrs. Yelverton’s room. I followed Sean to his mother’s room and noted that my mother’s room had been three doors down.

The nurse opened the door to reveal an emaciated looking woman watching television. The nurse said, “Mrs. Yelverton, Sean is here.”

She looked around, smiled and said, “Sean it’s good to see you.”

He gently hugged her and said, “Hi Mama. I got a good new job. This is my new boss Mr. Shepherd.”

She looked at his Game Zone shirt and said, “Good. I was so worried about you working nights. I read about that place in the paper.”

I said, “I’m glad to have him Mam. I think he has the makings of a shift leader.”

She asked, “Isn’t this above and beyond the duties of a boss?”

“Maybe but, three years ago, my mother had the room three doors down from this one. I like Sean, and I thought it might be good for both of you to know that he’s not going through this alone.”

She nodded and asked, “I saw in the evening news that your security identified a missing kid and his abductor was arrested. I’m very pleased that Sean is working with you.”

Sean said, “Tim has been good to me. Getting me off the night shift would have been enough but, all the guys that work at Game Zone are great. I’ve got plenty of new friends, and it’s a lot of fun working there.”

I excused myself and went to wait in the lobby near the front desk. The nurse said, “You look very familiar.”

I said, “My mother was here three years ago. Sean works for me, and I wanted to be here for him. There’s nothing anyone can do to make it not suck.”

She smiled sadly at me and said, “That’s good of you. I’ve been seeing him in and out of here since spring. I’m glad to see he has someone in his corner.”

“Could I leave my pager number? I want to be around for him when she passes.”

The nurse smiled and recorded my pager number and stuck it in the file.

Sean came out about twenty minutes later and, we walked out to the car.

I asked, “Are you OK?”

“She looks so bad. It’s a nightmare seeing her like this. My head knows I’m going to lose her but my heart…”

I put my arm around him and said, “I know Sean. It’s going to suck for you but, you aren’t alone anymore.”

When we got back to the Mustang, Tracy was sound asleep. I said, “It’s a shame to wake him up. He’s a real little cutie. I can see how you fell for him.”

Sean said, “You don’t have to say that.”

“Sean, when my Mom was dying, all I wanted to do was fuck, fuck and fuck some more. I did stuff that I wasn’t proud of and, when my Dad died a year later, I did nothing but stay stoned for days at a time. Losing your parents is shitty. If I had a cute little guy like Tracy knocking on my door when I was all messed up with grief, I would have probably fallen for him too.”

He said, “You aren’t just saying that?”

“No. I’ve been there, and people don’t know how to act around you. They mean well but, they don’t know what to do or say. Some people back off thinking you need space. Others are afraid of saying the wrong thing. It can make you feel alone when you need your family and friends the most. I don’t know all the right things to say or do, but I know what I wanted to hear: I’m going to be there for you.”

Sean hugged me. I held him for a moment and spoke softly in his ear, “It’s going to be all right. I need to run by Sears right quick. Then I’ll take you and Tracy home.”

xix.

Sears was an anchor store in the old DeKalb Mall. It was three stories high with the hardware in the lower level entrance set up for loading large items. Sean and Tracy followed me inside, and we went right to the Craftsmen tools. I picked out a modest tool chest, a two hundred-piece socket set, a set of twenty screwdrivers and other miscellaneous tools. I paid for it and had Sean and Tracy take it out to the car and put it in the trunk. I told them that I would be out in just a minute.

I was curious about the glory hole Little Dave had told me about and, I wanted to see it for myself. It was late, and the store would close in a little less than an hour, so there were few people around. I walked around browsing until I saw a sign with an arrow that indicated where it was.

They were in a long, out of the way corridor by the lawn and garden department. As I turned and went down the corridor, I noticed an older teenager inspecting a riding lawn mower glance my way. The men’s and women’s restrooms were down the hall across from each other with a water cooler on both sides.

I went inside and there was a short hall with another door that led inside the restrooms proper. When I got inside, no one was there, so I looked in the stalls and located two glory holes connecting the three back stalls. There were all sorts of obscene graffiti and drawings. The two holes were obviously well-used as there were spooge stains on the stall walls and floor.

Curiosity satisfied, I walked back to the four urinals and unzipped to take a leak. I was just starting as I heard to outer door open. Seconds later, the inner door opened and the teen looking at the riding lawn mower entered the restroom.

I got a good look at him in the mirrors without staring. I guessed him to be seventeen to nineteen. He was tall, muscular, well-tanned with sun bleached hair. He was wearing gym shorts, flip-flops and a DeKalb high school half-shirt that showed off a hard muscular stomach. He approached the urinal beside me, pulled his gym shorts down to expose his ass and a hard seven-inch cock throbbing to the rhythm of his pulse.

I looked at him and asked, “Happy to see me?”

He smirked and said, “I’m thrilled to see anybody other than the usual little kids or old farts. What do you like to do?”

“That depends. How old are you?”

“I’m seventeen. I’ll be a senior this fall.”

I ran my hand over his dimpled butt and said, “I’m quite sure we would enjoy each other’s company but, this place makes me nervous. You got a ride?”

He nodded and said, “Yeah, but it’s a clunker.”

I said, “I’ve got to go back to Lakeview. You want to ride with us?”

He smirked and said, “Who is us?”

“We just visited my friend’s Mom at the hospice. I’ll follow you home and you can park. You can ride with us. What’s your name?”

“Philip.”

“Well Philip, I’m Tim and if you don’t have anywhere to be, I’d like to spend some time with you. Consider this recruitment because I have a job you might be interested in.”

He furrowed his brow and said, “My Grandparents are probably asleep by now. OK. Let’s do it.”

We buttoned up, and he followed me out of the restroom to the parking lot where he had an old Chevy truck that was loaded up with a mower, weed eaters and assorted lawn care stuff.

Philip said, “I do lawn care and landscaping.”

I said, “Now I’m sure I want to recruit you. I’ve got just the job in mind.”

He got in, fired it up and said, “Follow me. My grandparents’ house isn’t far. Just follow the smoke signals.”

I got in the Mustang and followed the truck. Tracy was asleep and Sean had his arm around him.

Sean said, “I see you met Philip Holmes. Are you thinking of hiring him?”

I said, “Yeah. We need a groundskeeper for Dockside Park and I think he’ll do just fine.”

Sean said, “He’s a good guy, and probably deserves you taking an interest in him more than I do.”

I followed the old truck and asked, “What can you tell me about him?”

“I was a year ahead of him in school. Almost everyone seemed to like him, but he was a target for bullies. Rumor was he is gay, and the rednecks pushed him around pretty bad because of it. Seeing the way they treated him is one of the big reasons I stayed a virgin for so long.”

Philip’s old truck did indeed give smoke signals. If there was anything left of the piston rings in that engine, I would be astonished. He pulled up to a dark, neat house that needed a coat of paint just a few blocks from the old mall.

I followed Philip inside where he left a note on the kitchen table saying that he was going to Lakeview to meet with a man about a job. I gave him my pager number so they could reach me in the morning. I asked Philip to pack an overnight bag with a couple of changes of clothes and a swimsuit.

He gathered his things quickly and met me at the kitchen door.

Philip was a little shocked to see Sean in the front seat of the Mustang and the two older boys got on the back seat where they could talk. I put the seat belt on Tracy, put my arm around him and drove back to the house.

Sean and Philip chatted amiably but quietly on the back seat on the way back to Lakeview where we arrived a little after nine. It was quiet when we arrived. The night shift was at Game Zone, and it looked like a number of day shift guys were there having fun. I picked up Tracy whose long day had caught up with him with a vengeance. I carried him up to the first floor and deposited him in the bedroom that I had first put Steven and Cory. Sean lay down beside him and kicked off his shoes.

I hugged them both and said, “Expect us back after eleven. Now, you two cuties have entirely too many clothes on.”

Philip was in the kitchen gazing at the preparations for breakfast: skillets and biscuit pans all lined up and ready to go. He asked, “How many people live here?”

“It starts around twenty-five and can go up depending on which friends are staying over. I’m the foster Dad of a number of them. Others stay with us as their parents work out of town or insane hours. So are you curious to see how deep the rabbit hole goes?”

He said, “Yeah. I’ve always liked Sean. He was cool to me when darned few people were.”

“Come on upstairs, and I’ll see who else is around. Most of the cars and trucks are gone so it can’t be too many.”

He paced me up the stairs, and I was right. If anyone was around, they were asleep or outside. Phillip followed me into the party room where we took a couple of bong hits and I rolled a joint for later. Then he followed me back outside down the path to Dockside Park.

I said, “Dockside Park was just another boat ramp for a long time, but the city just gave it a big makeover, and the grand opening is tomorrow. I designed most of it and I am running the project. We’ve put in a pool and some other amenities, but the only way we can keep it running smoothly is to have a small staff. So far, I’ve got the lifeguards covered and guys to run the skate park but, if you want it, we have need of a groundskeeper.”

As we walked I said, “We have all the landscaping done, and basically, it will just be keeping the grass cut, trash emptied, hedges trimmed and the grounds neat. I get the idea that you are most comfortable outdoors?”

Philip looked around and said, “This is really nice but…”

I interrupted and said, “If you want it, I can make it happen for you. I have a plan Philip. My plan is for you and the guys that work Dockside and eventually City Park to form the core of a company that does what is called facilities management. That’s something that the government is really piss poor at so they are beginning to contract companies that know how to do those jobs. Once we stand it up, have a track record of success here, we can bid on other jobs. One of the companies that handle the football games for one of the SEC schools made three-hundred and fifty thousand for home games last season.”

We sat on one of the new picnic tables in the dark. He was quiet and spent a few moments in thought and asked, “If I take the job, could I… move in and go to school over here. DeKalb sucks for me. They know I’m queer and treat me like shit. My parent didn’t want me anymore so they dumped me on my grandparents.”

I put my arm around his shoulder and said, “Sean told me you were a good guy who needed a break. Everyone around me has been kicked out, neglected, abandoned or people don’t have time for them. I have made a family of them.”

Somewhere out of the dark a familiar voice spoke, “Hey Tim, is that you?”

“Yeah, it’s me. What do you think?”

Jeff Blake came out of the dark and said, “It’s spectacular. There’s a pool and a skate park and…”

Travis Meadows came out of the dark from behind Jeff and added, “It’s like it isn’t even the same place. There’s a white sand beach. That’s got to be the only beach in five hundred miles of here.”

I said, “Jeff, Travis, this is Philip. He’s from DeKalb, and I’m trying to talk him into running the grounds crew out here.”

Jeff said, “Holy crap Tim, he’s gorgeous.”

I could feel Philip blushing and Travis said, “It’s cool Philip. Everybody around here loves Tim. He looks out for us. He’s saved at least three kids that I know of from freaks.”

Jeff added helpfully, “Don’t forget the three they rescued from that Dalton guy's house.”

Philip asked, “That was you?”

Jeff said, “It was. He shot that crazy preacher right in the eye and saved our friend Aaron. If he likes you, you’ve got it made.”

Philip said, “I think I’m figuring that out, I just couldn’t believe it.”

Jeff said, “If you hear wild stories about Tim, it’s probably true unless he’s being an asshole.”

I asked, “Are y’all going to Arrowhead with us tomorrow?”

Travis said, “I wouldn’t miss it. Are you going back to the Game Zone tonight?”

‘Yeah. I’ve got to help close.”

“Could we catch a ride?”

“Sure.”

We rolled into the Game Zone a little before ten and I found out where everybody was. Even at this hour, the parking lot was still full and, I got the last parking place in the employee lot.

Danny was working the front door with Lance and, it appeared that we had a full house. Alan had his Rolling Stones mix playing. I said, “Hey Danny, how is it going?”

“We’ve got a full house boss. Ritchie just changed the cartridges again and, I’m thinking you’re in for a pleasant surprise when you count up.”

“Danny, this is Philip Holmes. I think he’s going to run our crew at Dockside Park. Philip, this is Danny Miloy. Besides for being our doorman, he watches our backs.”

Danny stood in greeting, shook Philip’s hand and said, “Tim is a great boss, and the city will be delighted to have some people keeping a closer eye on Dockside Park. It’s been neglected too long, and I think the whole town will be delighted when it reopens tomorrow.”

Philip said, “Tim showed me a little of it. It looks like a resort.”

One of the parents retrieving kids overheard our conversation and said, “I live across the lake from it and was shocked when I got home from work and saw a beach over there. It’s going to make all of our homes more valuable. It’s much better than the eyesore it used to be.”

We moved on into the arcade and Travis and Jeff got lost in the shuffle. I spotted many of my day shift guys out of uniform playing games and having fun. Philip followed looking like the crowd and the energy of the place intimidated him.

I said, “Our grand opening was today. That’s why we’re packed like this.”

We mingled a bit and I introduced Philip to a string of my kids in green Game Zone shirts or our off-duty crew. I noticed that for someone I had met cruising an hour or so before, Philip was shy.

When we made it back to the kitchen and dining room, I was surprised to see that someone had a videotape of the old Bad News Bears movie running and about twenty younger kids were watching including a sleepy looking Matty and Joey sitting with Toby, Cole and Big Ted.

They jumped up and ran to me when they saw me. I knelt and caught the two little guys in a hug as they arrived. I said, “Hey boys. You two look like you are ready for bed.”

Matty said, “That’s my favorite movie. Big Ted got it just for me!”

Looking at Joey, Philip said, “This little guy looks just like Tanner Boyle.”

I said, “Joey, Matty: this is Philip. He’s trying to decide if he wants to work with us.”

Surprising me, Joey hugged Philip and said, “Tim is the best.”

Philip smiled and said, “I’m beginning to get that idea. You like that movie?”

Joey said, “Yeah, it’s funny and everybody says I look like the kid who is always cussing but, I don’t cuss as much as I used to.”

Philip asked, “Why not?”

Joey said, “Because, it’s fun here, everybody is nice, and I don’t have as much to cuss about.”

I asked, “Philip, are you hungry? Aaron is shutting down the grill, but we’ve always got something.”

He said, “Yeah, I could use a hot dog or something.”

“I’ll let Aaron know, and he’ll get you something. I’ve got to get back to the office and start getting ready to close.”

I went up to the counter and asked Aaron what he had left and, if he could hand a hot dog plate to the tall kid with sandy hair talking to the boys watching the video. I was watching when it happened: Aaron and Philip locked eyes on each other.

Adam looked up from cleaning the grill saw the expression on Aaron’s face and then looked to see who he was looking at. He smirked, rolled his eyes and said, “Oh brother.”

Out of curiosity, I stuck my head in the Dark Room and found Todd, Billy, David and Little Karl zonked out on one of the couches. Zeke and Charlie were sleeping on the other one. Little Karl was awake, put his finger to his lips and followed me out of the Dark Room and into the employee lounge.

“Hey Karl, how are you?”

He answered me with a hug.

I asked, “That good?”

He nodded.

“Why aren’t you watching the movie?”

Karl got a look on his face like he smelled something rotten and said, “Whenever I watch that movie, they say I look like Lupus.”

I hugged him back and said, “You like David?”

He nodded.

I said, “I was hoping that would happen for you. His cousin was like my big brother when I was in junior high.”

I picked up Karl, he wrapped me up with his arms and legs, put his head on my shoulder and whispered in my ear, “I know you set it up. I really like him.”

I asked, “What about Todd?”

Karl said, “Billy and Todd seem to have hit it off.”

I sighed and said, “I guess that was inevitable. You know I love you little guys and, I’m trying to look out for you?”

Karl said, “Yeah. It’s a damn shame you are too decent to molest the willing.”

I asked, “I don’t really mean to pry but, why are you by yourself so much Karl?”

“Mom’s a lawyer in Atlanta. We used to live there but, when I was in fourth grade, she and Dad split up. She was originally from near here and, when she won a big case last year she bought the house we live in. Every Monday early she flies to Atlanta and, I stay here. I’m the new kid so I don’t really know too many people but Larry, Tommy and their Mom. She’ll be back tomorrow about eleven o’clock.”

“If I asked her, would you like to stay with us while she’s out of town?”

Karl looked thoughtful and said, “She is worried because of some of the stuff that has happened lately. She is an old school friend of Mrs. Holloway. If she vouches for you, I’m pretty sure it’ll be all right.”

“What time will she be home?”

“She’ll be home from the airport by noon.”

“I think I should meet her. I don’t even know your last name.”

“My last name is Carter but, Mom has gone back to her maiden name of Henderson.”

“If your Mom’s name is Monica, we’re cousins. I’ll bet you are named after your mother’s Daddy Karl Henderson.”

“Really!?”

“Yeah— I’m your second or third cousin. We would have to sit down with Aunt Mattie to sort it all out. My Dad used to hunt with your Granddaddy Karl every year. Alan, Lee and about half the county we’re going to tomorrow are your cousins too, so you aren’t as alone as you thought.”

Karl hugged me with all his might. He was his usual laconic self but, in this matter he was quite eloquent. He liked the idea of having a county full of cousins.

Good subordinates are worth their weight in gold. Ritchie and Frank showed me just how much of a joy when I got into the office. They had all of the receipts counted up, strapped and bagged. When I added up the numbers we were all astonished.

Day Shift: 7,636.00

Day Kitchen: 2,340.00

Night Shift: 8,220.00

Night Kitchen: 3,112.00

Coins: 122.50

Total Receipts: 21,430.50

I added the numbers up again and got the same total three times. Frank and Ritchie were quiet but smiling.

“I knew this place would be a hit but, I had no idea a bunch of old refurbished video games would do this well.”

Frank said, “It’s not just the games. Roderick’s kitchen is great and, we made even more tonight with Arron and Adam running it. Cops have discovered our kitchen. I’ve seen a bunch of them slip in for a plate through the day. The kids really like our staff. There is as much flirting and socializing as gaming when I was up front this morning.”

Ritchie added, “Another factor is definitely the pricing. Most video arcades that I’ve ever seen are a quarter a credit. The kids are shocked when they put a dollar bill and get eight tokens. They can play longer, stay longer and, get hungry.”

I said, “Our policy of being security conscious, having a house phone and keeping contact numbers for our frequent flyers makes it a place parents don’t mind their kids going and staying for a while. These are grand opening numbers. We can’t count on this every day but, it’s off to a damned good start. Truthfully, I was thinking we would be lucky if it was half this.”

Frank said, “Maybe we should think about a day pass that includes a bunch of tokens and a meal. I know a lot of kids here have parents at work and, we can beat the crap out of day care or summer camp on a cost basis.”

I grinned and said, “Now you’re thinking. Do you know if the twins are here?”

Ritchie looked at the cameras and said, “Yeah, they’re in the dining room watching the movie. It looks like the exodus has begun.”

Frank said, “Some of them would stay here as long as we were open.”

“It looks like Danny is having a dispute at the front door”, Ritchie said indicating the image on the screen.

I said, “Yeah, I’d better go see what that’s about.”

I quickly made my way to the front. As I passed through the dining room and the arcade, the crowd was very much on the decline. I spotted Phillip and Aaron chatting and half watching the movie. I asked Phillip to give me a hand and told Aaron he could continue their conversation at the house shortly. Phillip followed me to the front.

I arrived at the door and heard Danny say, “I can tell you’ve been drinking. You’ve got a bunch of kids with you and, I just can’t let you.”

An irate older teen replied hotly, “Well what am I supposed to do?”

I said, “Let one of us drive you home. One of my guys will follow and pick up the driver. Everybody gets home safe and sound.”

The older boy had four nervous looking kids with him: two younger teen boys and two elementary age girls. He looked around and his hot retort died on his lips. He said, without heat, “Really?”

“Really. We don’t aren't trying to jam you up but, you might have noticed police and firefighters are thick around here. The gym next door is where they do their physical training. Come on. I’ll drive you home.”

I handed the keys to the Mustang to Phillip, turned to Danny and said, “We’ll be back shortly.”

The boy looked relieved and led me out to a brand new Mustang Saleen. I said, “Uh oh. We’re not going to fit six in this.”

About that time, Phillip pulled up in my Mustang Fastback. The boy’s eyes widened and said, “Can I ride in that?”

I said, “Sure. Just tell Phillip where to go and I’ll follow.”

I got in the new Mustang and savored the new car smell. One of the boys said, “My rude big brother didn’t introduce himself or us. He’s Mike, I’m Rusty, and this is my friend Eddie and my little sister Becky and her friend Felicia on the back seat.”

I said, “Nice to meet you Rusty. Hope you like my place.” I started up the car, pulled out behind Phillip, and we started on our way.

Rusty said, “I do. Eddie and me can make it there on our bikes. Was that Rebel Ashcraft we saw in there?”

“Yes, it was.”

“He’s… really different.”

I said, “Rebel’s Mom got a DUI this afternoon and he’s going to be staying with me. She hasn’t been taking care of him like she should and, now he’s not worried about where his next meal is coming from.”

Eddie said, “Rebel is cool. We just aren’t allowed to hang out with him because he gets in so much trouble. I’m glad he’s got someone taking care of him.”

One of the girls from the back seat said, “Rebel is really cute.” Then they started giggling.

Rusty said, “Once you turn on Garner Street, our driveway is fourth on the right.”

I pulled in and parked where Rusty indicated and noticed, Rebel/Joey’s house was directly behind.

I got out and the kids all piled out of the car. I pulled some lose tokens out of my pockets and said, “I’d better get rid of these or they’ll end up in my washing machine again.” I handed a small stack of tokens to all four of the kids. They thanked me and went inside.

Mike came up and said, “Thanks. My Granddad gave me that car for graduation and, I was really stupid to drink.”

I handed him the last of the tokens I had in my pocket and said, “Just learn from your mistake. This one was a free-be. You didn’t get burned. It wasn’t very far but, bad things can happen anywhere. See you around?”

Mike said, “Yeah. My little brother and sister love the place and, you guys are really cool.”

I bumped knuckles with Mike and joined Phillip back in the Mustang. I slid into the passenger seat and said, “You like driving the beast?”

Phillip said, “You see what I drive. Driving this is giving me a car boner.”

I said, “You want to have a look at the other park? It’s the one that hasn’t been renovated yet.”

I directed Phillip and he drove us a few streets over and we pulled into the long drive that extended along the water. When we got to the parking place where Football Player Dick had been earlier, I told him to pull in. We got out and looked around and Phillip shook his head.

He said, “This looks like Centennial Park in DeKalb. Nobody has taken care of it for years.”

I said, “Yeah. To truly see what a mess it is, you should see it in daylight. You have any ideas for what we could do with the place?”

Phillip looked around and said, “The undergrowth has got to go. It needs a fence and gates or kids will be here partying all night. It needs to be cleared of dead and fallen trees. Are you going to clean it up as nice as the other park?”

“I’m still thinking about that. All the original structures are in pathetic shape. We should just replace them rather than fix them. It needs the whole works.”

Phillip snapped his fingers and said, “I’ve got it. Put in a baseball field, basketball court and a BMX bike track. It’s big. Use it all.”

I looked at the veritable jungle that had taken over much of the park dubiously but let my imagination go with ball fields and a BMX track replacing the tangle of weeds and undergrowth.

I noticed Philip smiling and I asked, “What?”

He said, “You can see it like I do.”

“I do. Creativity and imagination are the gay super power. We see possibilities when others just see a hot mess that’s not worth the time or trouble. This won’t be nearly as easy as Dockside Park, but it will be an even bigger, shinier gem once we’re done.”

Philip said, “I haven’t really answered your question yet but, hell yeah. I want to work for you.”

xx.

When we got back to the Game Zone, the parking lot was empty except for the employee lot on the side. The armored car was loading up at the side door by the office. I pulled up to the front door and asked for the twins (Tommy, Bobby) and, Zeke and Charlie to ride with Philip and me.

Both vans were loading up so no one was being left. Randy and Ritchie were both on site and had all the keys necessary to close and got the job done as soon as the cash pickup was done. With that little detail handled, they locked up and we began heading home. As I drove the group in my car home, I told them about my plans for them to work onsite at Dockside Park and, later in the summer to do a similar upgrade for City Park.

We arrived home behind one of the vans a few minutes after eleven. I pulled into the garage and parked as the rest of the crowd began to debark from the vans and other vehicles.

As Chris approached I said, “Pass the word for everybody to hold up in the gym before we go upstairs. I need to talk to everybody about tomorrow before they go to bed.”

I had the guys I’d picked to work Dockside Park follow me inside where I quickly turned the sauna on low. Everybody else followed us in and began to gather in the gym. I walked a few steps up the stairs as the last few people trickled in.

I raised my voice and said, “I wanted to have a few words with you before we hit the rack. First, does anyone need a ride home?”

When no one spoke up I continued, “We’re going to have a very busy day tomorrow. The memorial service for the Big Sandy Baptist Church Massacre will be tomorrow at nine. I know Aaron and Adam will go but others may want to as well. I’ll be taking one of the vans so be ready to bug out for that about eight-thirty. Dress will be casusal but nice— jeans and a good shirt will suffice. If you are going in to work, you might as well wear our uniform. Give me a show of hands on who wants to go.”

Cole, Toby, Alan, Barry, Brandon, Larry and Tommy raised their hands.

I said, “Anyone else who decides to go is welcome. Just be ready to roll at eight-thirty. The second big thing that’s happening tomorrow is Dockside Park will re-opening. There will be a ceremony at ten-thirty with the Mayor Curry, Chief Dodd and the press. Check it out. It’s a whole lot nicer than it used to be.”

“Next— meet the Blue Team. I’m standing up another team to take care of Dockside Park. Philip will be the groundskeeper, Bobby, Tommy, Zeke and Charlie will be our lifeguards and run the skate park. We’ll pick up a few more people as needed.”

“Dr. Patrick will be here tomorrow and start seeing those of you that need it. I expect him at nine and we have a room set up for him on the first floor. He’ll be coming every Friday for a while so, at least touch base with him and get scheduled to see him.”

“Grant— you and I will visit with your grandmother tomorrow afternoon. It’ll happen during dayshift and we’ll just run over there for a few minutes.”

“Last but not least, I have a bus coming for us right after the end of day and night shift. Pack an overnight bag. Day shift will come back at eight. Night shift will be back in time to take over.”

“You have all done extremely well in our first couple of days. I’m really proud of you. When you get to Arrowhead Lodge, you’ll all find a few surprises there that will show you just how proud of you I am. We’ll have some fun and a couple of good meals and then I’m going to tell you all about the plan. Now, let’s all get some rest.”

I stayed at the foot of the stairs as the guys went upstairs. I gave everyone some attention: bumping knuckles, giving hugs and joking with them. Some of the guys went home: Matthew’s bunch, Travis, Jeff, Jo-Jo and Kelly said their goodbyes and departed. I stayed until everyone but the Blue Team, Frank, Tony, Ritchie, Robbie and Billy were standing there.

I said, “Frank, could you take my Blue Team guys up to the party room and show them some hospitality? I’ll be along in a bit.”

“Sure Tim.” Frank flashed that smile of his and said, “You guys follow me upstairs.”

Ritchie, with a very sleepy Robbie and Billy said, “I need to get Tracy. We aren’t prepared to stay overnight.”

“I’ll go get him. He and Sean were dead on their feet and I left them on the couch.”

I went upstairs and Tony followed. When we went in the kitchen, Tony hugged me and said, “The overnight to Arrowhead was a great idea. The new guys have been hearing stories about the place and everybody is excited.”

I said, “It’s time for a little fun. You guys really carried the can to get Game Zone in shape to open and, it’ll be fun seeing everybody running around in Speedo again.”

Tony asked, “Are you going to do one on one interviews like you did last time?”

“I don’t know. I’m still thinking about it. We might break up into small groups like we did here last time. Let’s get the kids to bed and bring Chris to meet up in the party room in a bit. Check with Randy and Rory and see if they are up to it too. See you shortly.”

I went to the room where I had deposited Sean and Tracy and listened before I opened the door. It was cracked and I could tell the light in the bathroom was on. I heard heavy breathing and realized that they were enjoying each other’s company immensely.

I heard Tracy: “Oh God Sean… It feels so good. Mmmmmmm!”

I waited for Tracy to enjoy the moment before I entered the room. When I opened the door, both boys jumped and I said, “It seems my timing was just right.”

Tracy said, “We weren’t…”

“Oh sure you were. Ritchie is here and wants to take you back to the apartment so you will be able to change and pack a few things for tomorrow night.” I closed the door and latched it. Sean and Tracy’s clothes were scattered on the floor.

Tracy asked tentatively, “You’re not mad?”

I approached the bed, knelt beside it, hugged a very naked Tracy and kissed his forehead. Then I hugged Sean who was just as bare. “Mad? How could I be mad at a couple of cuties like you? It’s taking all my self-control to keep from jumping in bed with you. I could wish you to be more careful but, I’m not mad. I love you two and will protect you as best I can. I know you love each other and, I’ll do what I can to give you opportunities to be together. Just remember to lock the door an turn on the radio. Cool?”

Sean nodded sheepishly.

“Now Tracy, get your shorts on. Sean, meet me in the kitchen in a minute. When I get Tracy settled with Ritchie, we’re going upstairs to hang out for a bit.”

Tracy put on his boxers, shorts and shoes but left his shirt off. I followed him out of the room, knelt, pulled him into a hug and said, “Remember Tracy, you were asleep on the couch. You’re very sleepy. That gives me and good excuse to carry you.”

Tracy whispered in my ear, “Thank you for fixing it so I could be with Sean and covering for us. What can I do to pay you back?”

I picked him up, started walking and asked, “Tell me: does Billy have a boyfriend like you have Sean?”

Tracy giggled and said, “Billy has two. They’re brothers that live in the apartments. We’ve all of fooled around. Gene caught Billy blowing Scotty and politely asked for one, too. Gene’s fifteen, really cool and has a big one.”

“Be sure to introduce them when they come to the Game Zone.”

“They probably won’t. They’re really poor.”

“Bring them anyway. I’ll give them some tokens so you guys can hang out with your friends.”

Tracy squeezed me, put his head on my shoulder and kissed my neck.

I teased him and said, “I know somebody hot who likes you.”

“Tell me, tell me!”

“You’ve met him, he thinks you are hot and probably has the biggest dick you’ve ever seen.” Tracy wiggled like a hungry puppy with a milk bone. “I’ll formally introduce you two tomorrow but it’ll cost you a kiss and a couple of blow jobs.”

Tracy said, “We don’t have time.”

“I get the kiss tomorrow night at Arrowhead. Billy and Robbie get blow jobs tonight. Oh, and tell Billy to bring his friends tomorrow.”

Tracy sighed and said, “OK.”

I carried him down stairs, put him in Ritchie’s car and fastened his seat belt.

Ritchie grinned and said, “See you in the morning.”

I closed the garage, locked the door and rejoined Sean in the kitchen. He was barefoot, shirtless and cute as a button. He looked at me and said, “You know Tracy’s got a big crush on you. He’s the one the left the door unlocked hoping you would catch us and join in.”

I said, “I thought about it. Let me check my messages. Is that little hottie corrupting you Sean?”

He followed me into my office laughing and said, “I think we corrupt each other. We both get hard on sight and, you affect me the same way.”

I punched the play messages button on my answering machine and said, “You two are awfully cute together. Come here.”

Sean sat in my lap as messages played and I said, “You’ve got to be really careful. I’m not sure when you turn eighteen but, the stakes will be even higher.”

My cousin Jason Henderson’s voice came on, “Tim, this is Jason. My Dad had to go to Memphis for minor surgery. It’s nothing serious but he had been putting it off until we got a little ahead. Uncle Roy drove him but he won’t be here this weekend. Aunt Kim and Jean are going to handle the barbecue and we’ll all be there so all is well. See you tomorrow night. BEEP!”

“Mr. Shepherd, this is Ken Johnson of Ingersol Equipment. The GMC work truck and equipment order is ready to pick up. We’re open seven to four Fridays. BEEP!”

“Mr. Shepherd, this is Travis Foster from Shepherd Securities. We are seeing indications that Chemical Bank is getting ready to move on the Acadia Ridge Properties next week. Per your instructions, we are going to beat them to the punch and make our move at the start of business Friday morning. BEEP!”

“Tim, this is Bart. I uhhh… I really need to see you. Call me, please?”

“End of Messages.”

Sean said, “Bart sounds interesting.”

“He is. You’ll like him.”

I looked in my Rolodex, found Bart’s number and called him.

Bart answered on the first ring, “Hello?”

“Hi Bart, this is Tim.”

“Can I come over? Something has come up you'll want to know about.”

“Sure. We're just getting everybody settled. Come around to the patio door. I’ve got the garage closed up.”

“Thank you Tim. I’ll be there in ten.”

I sighed, hung up the phone and put my arms around Sean. “Change of plans. Bart is coming over.”

Sean asked, “What am I to you Tim?”

“What do you want me to be?”

“I don’t know but, I really like this. It feels so good to have your arms around me.”

“Well, let’s start with what you are not. You aren’t a boy toy.”

Sean considered my words quietly and said, “OK, fair enough but, what am I to you?”

I said, “Fair warning: I’m going to hold on tight so you can’t run away.”

He said with true warmth in his voice, “I don’t want to. I've never met anyone like you.”

“OK. You are a very sweet boy who has missed out on a whole lot and is hurting. I see potential in that you. Since I can’t be your Dad, I’ll settle for that crazy uncle that spoils you a little and lets you do things that drive moms bonkers.”

Sean laughed and said, “Deal. I’ve always wanted one of those. There’s something I haven’t figured out. Why haven’t you put a move on me?’

“It’s not that I don’t want to. You’re definitely a hottie. I don’t want you to fall in love with me. Oh sure, we can later but, not now. You are too beaten up emotionally and, you need to heal some first. You are like a boxer that’s been in the ring for few too many rounds. Think of me as the trainer in your corner. I’m going to coach you, close your cuts, clean you up and get you in shape to get back in the ring.”

Sean said, “So you are my corner man. That’s cool and, I need one.”

I massaged his shoulders and said, “Count on me to be in your corner. I think we both know that’s what you need now but, relationships are dynamic and change over time. What you need now won’t be the same as a few months or years down the road. That’s what a lot of people don’t understand about relationships and why so many fail unless they are on a firm foundation. Can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“You’ve never been with anybody but Tracy, have you?”

Sean was quiet and then said, “Does being molested a half dozen times count?”

“It counts for a lot. Many kids have very mixed feelings about that. A lot depends on the circumstances and how you felt about it. Its sex and it feels good so, many feel guilty and ashamed because they liked that part of it. For others it’s really traumatic and can lead to a lot of negative emotional consequences later on. If you want to talk about it, I’ll listen and, I have a shrink coming out once a week to see my kids about stuff like that. You aren’t the only one by far.”

Sean said, “The worst time was when I was eleven or twelve. I wanted… to be close to an older guy so bad. The guy that did it was an older teenage cousin. He claimed he knew who my Dad was and would tell me if I sucked his dick. He didn’t know. He just conned blow jobs out of me.”

I squeezed him and said, “That was ugly.”

Sean sighed, “That was the worst, most humiliating time. My Mom got so outdone with the way her family treated both of us, she cut them off for being assholes so, I didn’t have to be around them. The other times, it was similar. I wanted a daddy so bad but, all the potential daddy’s wanted was to get in my pants. Now I think I’ve finally found the right one.”

I said, “The reason I asked was, the boy that is coming over is close to your age and would be a really good match for you. Bart is a very intelligent but, he’s really shy and awkward. He’s cute as a button and, I like him a lot. I’m going to introduce you and, we’ll hang out. Anything else is up to you two OK?”

He sighed and said, “I’d rather be with you but, I think I get what you are doing. You want me to be with a peer don’t you?”

“Yes. I want the same thing for Bart too. I made a mistake with him. I think I’ve given him the only two blow jobs he’s ever had and, he has fallen for me. I’ll owe you if you help me with this.”

Sean asked, “What if he falls for me?”

“Then you would have a boyfriend that’s legal and Tracy on the side.”

The speaker in my office bonged and Sean asked, “What is that?”

“That is the security system. That tone means a car has pulled in the driveway. That’ll be Bart so, let’s go meet him.”

Sean followed me to the sliding glass door to the patio. It was dark with only the light of the bug zapper. I keyed the alarm disarm code and we stepped out on the patio just in time for Bart to come around the house.

I said, “Hey Bart. What’s up?”

Bart arrived winded and said, “There was a big, loud argument and fight at Rodney Carlton’s house. My neighbor called the cops and they arrested his step-dad and took Rodney to the hospital.”

“Thanks for letting me know. Have you met Sean?”

Bart looked at Sean and said, “Hi. I’m Bart. It’s nice to meet you.”

“Sean is from DeKalb so I doubt you’ve met him yet. I hired him to work at GameZone.”

Sean said, “He is just as cute as you said he was Tim.”

Bart blushed so bright you could notice it in the bug-light. He stammered and said, “You’re… pretty cute too.”

I asked, “Sean, could you entertain Bart for a while? I need to find out what is going on.”

“Sure Tim”, Sean replied. “Let’s get back inside before the mosquitoes get a bead on us.”

They followed me indoors where I reset the alarm and locked the patio door. I hugged both boys and said, “I’m sure a couple of cuties like you can find some ways to amuse yourselves for a while. Do you want to sleep over Bart?”

He looked at Sean, blushed again and said, “Yeah. I think I’d like that.”

“Bart, you remember where the party room is upstairs. Take Sean up there and say hi to the guys. Don’t mention this to Big Ted until we know what we’re talking about. I’m going to make a couple of calls and see what is happening with Rodney. What’s his parents last name?”

Bart replied, “Rodney’s last name is Carlton but, his step-father and mother’s sur-name is Latham.”

I hadn’t even made it into the office before the phone was ringing.

I answered on the third ring, “Good evening Judge Vinson.”

“How did you know it was me?”

“My spies just told me that there had been trouble at Rodney Carlton’s house, his step-father left in cuffs and Rodney left in an ambulance. I figured I’d be hearing from you.”

Judge Vinson chuckled and said, “I think the CIA needs to take some lessons from your network Tim. We had a bad situation there. Do you think you have room for Rodney?”

I asked, dreading the answer, “How bad off is he. He’s just a skinny kid.”

Judge Vinson said, “Not bad at all. He’s just bruised up and doesn’t need to stay at the hospital. Dr. Roberts has found evidence of ongoing abuse so, he’s not going home until we get that sorted out. If you can take him, we can drop off Rodney at your door in about a half hour.”

“I’d be glad to help. I need to sit down with you next week and get some things sorted for the Pate boys and Brian Bullard. Let’s try to kill as many birds with that stone as we can but, I’ll be out of town from Tuesday afternoon returning Friday afternoon.”

“Good enough Tim. Thank you for this. Rodney didn’t need to spend this night with strangers.”

xx.

I made my may through the second floor. I hugged kids, tucked them in and listened to them. They were each and every one so precious. I gave Joey, Matty, Ray, Walt and Juan the blue Valium Doctor Chang had prescribed to give them some peaceful sleep. I hugged Toby and told him how proud I was of his painting, Brandon how proud I was of him spotting Matty’s distress, Barry and Cole for making Colt’s day and David and Little Karl how cute they both were together and Alan how excited I was to hear his debut tomorrow night. I gave them back every possible positive thing we shared that day.

Finally, I asked Big Ted to come with me. We went down stairs and he followed me into the parlor near the front foyer. I told him that there had been a big fight at Rodney’s house. His step father had gone too far and gotten himself arrested. Rodney got banged up but wasn’t hurt too badly. Silent tears ran down his big face.

The doorbell rang and when I opened it, Rodney was standing there with a suitcase and an overnight bag over his shoulder.

They had no words. Ted wrapped his big arms around Rodney protectively and sobbed quietly. I left them on the big comfortable couch in the parlor.

xxi.

When Frank and I finally made it to bed alone, we had the bright idea to slip away to the sauna. We grabbed fresh boxers and towels and snuck downstairs in the still quiet of the night.

We thought we were going to be alone but Sean and Bart had the same idea. Thankfully they were done. After Bart told me that he would drive Sean to his apartment and help him move in the morning, they retired to bed.

I reprised my very first encounter with Frank and, this time he was ready. After a quick shower, we went back upstairs and did it again. Talk about your grand openings.
