After he is kicked out of multiple schools for fighting, Toni is being threatened with the prospect of military school.

McGreggor High is his last chance.

Will Toni be able to turn things around for himself? And what exactly does this guy named Marc want with him?

What I Loved

An American high school in fiction where the jocks aren’t complete assholes and/or homophobic? Wow, what a rarity. Nice to see a story straying away from that trope. (That being said, there are still a bunch of American high school tropes in this, haha.)

Honestly, Marc is such a sweetheart. Though... he is a bit much at times. I can see why Toni got scared off. But once you get past all that, Marc really is quite a good guy.

I liked all of the side characters and how supportive they were of Toni and Marc’s relationship! Now those are some real friends.

What Could've Been Better

Last Chance High could definitely do with another round of editing or two. There are several grammar, spelling, and clarity issues present in the version I am reviewing, which make it difficult to read at times. (Chapter 6 in particular has several scenes in a row where Marc is referred to as Toni for whatever reason. The best and worst example of this is a sentence that goes something like “Toni thought about Toni and smiled.” How that was not caught baffles me.)

Would Warren really be willing to confess that he likes Toni (and therefore his sexuality) in front of the principal? I mean, he had been denying it for a long time and was deathly afraid of it getting out…

I honestly find it a bit hard to believe that Erik, who was pining after Toni for a while, just suddenly gives up after hearing that Toni and Marc are still together. Maybe that’s just me, though.

Miscellaneous Thoughts

Toni and Marc’s ship name is “Broni”? I can see “oni” from Toni, how does Marc Townsend become “br”? (If you say it out loud, it sounds like a certain fandom too, haha. Are they even still around?)

During my initial read through, I honestly just wanted to yell at Toni after the first half of the story. You were sleeping in the same bed with Marc, he defended you against a dickbag bully, and then suddenly you get cold feet and break off contact completely with him? After thinking about it for a bit, though, I can see why Toni did that. Marc definitely can be a bit overbearing, and he is the most popular guy at school… Add on top of that a big crush, and it all becomes a bit messy.

I really hope Marc and Toni’s relationship was able to continue despite Marc graduating and going to college.

Verdict

I enjoyed reading Last Chance High! It was a cute little love story—perfect for the sweet tooth. Unfortunately, however, there are quite a few blemishes which somewhat spoil the experience.

Put it on your reading list, if you think that you’ll be able to look past the poor editing.

Very cool story, I would love to know more about this characters, if you ever think about writing a new story with them😀
