Famous Last

Genres: Romance
Sub-genres: General Romance

Late October, and Spencer K Wyrrell—Squirrel—sits hidden behind an evergreen bush, freezing his arse off in the rooftop garden of his boss' London penthouse flat. Taking a break, he is waiting with an ice bucket and a bottle of Dom for the arrival of his colleague, Bev.   But when the balcony door slides open, the person who steps out is the smoking hot celebrity, Marshall J Highlander. Squirrel overhears Highlander’s call. A newspaper is threatening to publish nude photographs of him and his ex-boyfriend from a holiday in France.

And on that night, an unexpected friendship begins to blossom during a time of Christmas lockdown.

This story is set in contemporary Britain during the pandemic. As such, references are made to UK government regulations and guidelines, although some of the timelines may vary for artistic purposes. This story is my usual flavour of gay MM romance and is not a political statement in any way, simply an observation of a budding romance during extraordinary times.

Just finished reading this for the 2nd time around (two months apart), so you might guess I really liked the story 😄

Plenty of humor, some light and dark drama, the boss from hell, nevermind the curious black hole of Squirrel's flat.

A feel good story with some holiday and family funnies, and a cat 😼 who knows just how to pick the right people.

A sequel would be nice, but not required. The ending was nice and easy, everything was good for this cute pair of guys.

Response from the author:

Thanks @G90814, I wrote this a while ago now, and forgot about Squirrel and his barmy family. His mum welcoming Marshall to the house with “Come and meet the rest of the inmates.” is one of my favourite lines. I’m really pleased you enjoyed this and even though I don’t usually write sequels, I like to break my own rules all the time.

Thank you once again.

From beginning to the end this story had me hooked.

Response from the author:

Thank you @Wesley8890, for those kind words. I’ve really enjoyed creating the story around a romance during the coronavirus pandemic and really appreciate you staying the course.

Good read with interesting and realistic characters, set in a natural environment that was easy to relate to. Well written with good plot development and nice ending. Thank you for writing this contemporary story.

Response from the author:

Thank you @Sunshine,

Very much appreciate you taking the time to leave a review. I’m hoping to begin a new story here in June or July, if you’re interested.

So refreshing to  have a contemporary setting but it has a drawback, an epilogue is nearly out of the question, which is a shame. I was wanting a proposal out of Marshall, a wedding, the birth of a niece.

Well written, nicely developed plot. Thank you.

Response from the author:

Thank you so much @LD Stratton,

Getting a review means so much, so I want to thank you for taking your time to do this and your kind words.

I know what you mean about the epilogue, but then if I gave you all to that there would be no sequel, would there? I don't usually provide sequels, but I do like these characters and I think there's a lot more mileage in their relationship, don't you?

Again, thanks so much.

A wonderful story even in these COVID times, this story of an underdog who prevails as a gracious and deserving recipient of love and recognition is sure to brighten any day.  From the first chapter to the end, it keeps the reader engaged.

This is the perfect romance story set around the pandemic in Britain.

We meet Spencer aka. Squirrel and Marshall Highlander. What follows is a fantastic romance story that is full of many twists and turns.

Another fantastic story from Brian that is well worth a read.

Response from the author:

Thank you @chris191070, it’s always fun having you along for the ride with your often witty comments. I really appreciate your lovely words of encouragement.

I love this story as I do all of Lomax61’s stories. The MCs and the premise are interesting, even quirky in a down-to-earth way. The writing makes me want to know more.  Although I must say, I’m not a fan of storylines with a celebrity MC.  I think celebrityhood takes up too much of the storytelling landscape.   However, the way this is tale is written, it add favor to the basic story of boy meets boy. A damn good yarn.

Response from the author:

Hey @CritterSmith, thanks for the lovely review. Know what you mean about celebrities in fiction, but I hope Marshall comes across as more down to earth. Thanks for reading and leaving this review. Means a lot to us writers.

Famous Last is one of Brian Lomax's wonderfully written books.  As usual, he creates interesting plots that keep the reader waiting for the next twist.  His forte is the wonderful characters you can love or hate.  Spencer (Squirrel) is one of the loving and loyal characters in this story.  His romance with Marshall builds slowly as they face personal and professional challenges. They are assisted by a great many eclectic and loyal friends and family. This book will leave you  feeling upbeat about life with all its pitfalls and pratfalls. Friends, family and enemies all get their just rewards in this fun book.  I highly recommend this stories (and many others) written by Brian lomax.

Response from the author:

Dear @raven1, I have been watching as you read your way through this book, chapter by chapter, commenting on each with your own personal spin on the plot line, which is so rewarding for a writer, to know what the reader is thinking. Thank you so much for the wonderful review. It really helps other readers to decide whether they want to read a story.

Read this story a while ago on ancient iPad which doesn’t allow reviews.  Now I can make amends!!! This is such a good read.  The characters have depth and are balanced.  The flat in S London/ Northern Line etc are depicted beautifully despite their physical ugliness.
a lovely Covid era fairytale but with great feeling.   Brian is a really good writer and this is one to enjoy ☺️

Response from the author:

Hi @Gary L, I must have missed this review, so first my apologies. Thank you so much. It makes such a big difference to have a reader publicly acknowledge a story. I also like these two characters, and as you have observed, this is set in a location I am very familiar with. Thanks again, Gary.
