Twelve Gays of Christmas

   (6 reviews)

For five years, Trevor McTavish has planned a vacation for twelve close gay friends to enjoy Christmas together in remote country locations. Stratham Lodge in Scotland, hugging the shores of Loch Arkaig, is this year’s rental destination. Except grim providence has stepped in and friends have dropped out. Nevertheless, they decide to brace themselves and endure with a much reduced, and contentious party. Until the son of the owner, Rudy Mortimer—gloriously shirtless on horseback—appears, and the fun begins.

This is an early Christmas present for all of my GA pals who have helped me over the years.

An extremely well written story about finding love and happiness just when things look the worst. Everything seems to be unravelling as far as Trevor's Christmas plans go, even before he leaves for Scotland. Throw in an ex-husband, his bossy, extremely pregnant wife, a best friend who just broke up with her girlfriend, the best friend's mom who is still mourning the loss of her lover, a couple of strangers that were invited by the best friend's ex-girlfriend, a couple of friends who love making mischief, the dashing supposedly straight man on horseback who is also the son of the owner of the lodge who also happens to be an Earl, and some other memorable characters and you'll have Brenda's recipe for love!

For a holiday-themed adventure, I feel it was the perfect length. The writing style flowed well and was very descriptive without being too wordy; once again, a perfect amount. Not a single moment disappointed me as the events unfolded. I can't think of a single constructive thing to say that could possibly improve this particular tale any further than its current form. Truly a lovely read.

Another satisfying story from @lomax61. Clever and witty dialogue. Twists that leave you cheering one minute, and raising the middle finger the next. Won’t be disappointed. Like the feast of a whole heavenly cheesecake. Will leave you satisfied until the last word.

A wonderful story whose only major defect is that it’s not longer! The characters are inventively interesting and their interactions are cleverly creative. This is a fun read that doesn’t follow clichéd and tired story arcs. ;–)

When I first started reading I was really confused by so many characters. I thought this would be a mess with 'page filler' side stories and having to backtrack to remember who was who but, you developed the story so well that by the end I felt I knew everyone well.  I also agree with others that a sequel would be great, I wanted a wedding, love growing stronger, more and more of Trev and Rudy, conflict and challenges only their love for eachother could conquer.  And best of all, thank you for good use of the English language.

Response from the author:

Thanks for the kind review. Funnily enough, I’ve just revisited this story, and your comment about too many characters introduced early on (some who don’t appear in the story) is something other readers mentioned, so I’ve rewritten much of the first few chapters to edit them out. But I’m glad you persevered and enjoyed the read.

Also, in case you haven't read the story, my short story called "Search the Skies on Christmas Eve" has Rudy and Trevor returning to Loch Arkaig for Christmas with new friends, if you want to read some more about them.
