Six Seconds

   (1 review)

Pressed for time, Callen Worthwright drives down a treacherous route back from his snowboarding trip. The roads are icy; the snowstorm is a whiteout, and his car skids straight into the Pacific Ocean.

Hanging desperately on to life, a supernatural presence grants him a second chance at redemption. Callen is propelled kilometres across the continent to visit a long-lost friend whom he never had the chance to admit his feelings to.

The catch? He only has six hours to live.

FOREWORD: You should read this story before reading the review. All you need to know is that it is excellent and well worth your time.

After crashing his car into the ocean one winter night, Callen is greeted by a supernatural being. He is told that he has six hours left to live. With that, he is teleported hundreds of miles away to his friend’s apartment.

It's time for him to get his affairs in his order.

What I Loved

This story is an excellent entry in the ‘tragedy’ genre.

Spoiler

I didn’t expect the twist. I thought that somehow Callen would escape the Grim Reaper’s grasp and live with Sage… But alas, in this reality, it wasn’t meant to be.

The ending, holy shit. That was absolutely stunning. It made me ugly cry the first time I read it. (Well, I was already ugly crying all the way through chapter 5, but still…)  I especially loved how it kept open the possibility that in one of the "branches", Callen and Sage did get together.

What Could’ve Been Better

I have nothing to criticize. Yes, really.

Miscellaneous Thoughts

While I do like this story a lot, it should be noted that it is very depressing. (There is also lots of ‘hope’ to balance it out, though.)

Spoiler

I only noticed this on a re-read: Callen and Sage both say the same line, albeit in different ‘realities’ – “I care. I care. I always have.” Nice parallel.

Verdict

I stumbled upon this story expecting a romance with a supernatural twist. While I did get that, I also got so much more. What a story!

Highly recommended. A must read.

5 stars.
