"1968" is a sequel to "Chronicles of an Academic Predator." It takes place in (big surprise) 1968, amid the revolutionary climate of the United States and France. Author's Note: The events of this year were huge, and were constant, I can't imagine a year in recent history that was so convulsive. In fact, there were so many major events that sometimes it felt like writing the story was like wrapping the characters around the history, rather than the other way around.

Before you read this story, there are a few things you should consider:

1 It contains graphic descriptions of sex between men. There may even be some sex with women in here. Fortunately, there is no sex with animals.
2 Be aware that the effects of inflation have been profound. A good rule of thumb is to consider that $1 in 1968 is probably similar to $10 in 2008. So just add a zero at the end of any number.
3 This is a sequel to “Chronicles of an Academic Predator.” You don't have to read CAP before this story, but it will give you a deeper insight into the characters and their pasts.

When these events took place I was aN eleven-year-old aNd I have hazy memories of  watching the drama in the Sorbonne. What I think is really great is the way Mark seamlessly, or so it appears, combines historical facts with a fictitious family.

1968 is the second book in the CAP series and the one in my opinion that is the most under appreciated.  

 

It is set in one of the most turbulent years of the second half of the twentieth century.  Everything seemed to come to a head that year and Mark's characters are swept up in the events of history and were forever changed.  There is some real heartbreaking ground which is covered against the panoply of events.  

 

To understand the complexity of JP you must see how the events of this time in his life deeply changed and shaped him.  I promise you that the insights you get into the characters will help you to understand the man and his motives even to the present time in the latest book.
