Ralph: Breaking free - 35. Epilogue: Christmas Day

Ralph and Nolan were sitting in bed, eating breakfast; croissants, fruit and coffee, the crumbs were going everywhere. It was late, Ralph had already done his call with the twins, early. They had been full of energy, delighted to say Happy Christmas to Daddy and Nolan, though Therese was already looking frayed around the edges. Ralph had refrained from asking her how Christmas with her parents was working out, but he suspected that next year would see them trying to come up with a different arrangement and he wondered if anything was likely to happen with the bloke she had been seeing. When she’d spoken of it, she hadn’t seemed very sanguine, the twins had never spoken about it again and apart from one brief mention, so that seemed like a no.

After Christmas phone calls were over, they had gone back to sleep and woken to some lovely morning sex (well, it was still morning, just). Then, finally, breakfast.

“The twins are looking forward to visiting your parents, seeing the farm, the animals.”

Nolan frowned, “The weather’s going to be awful.”

Ralph laughed, “Then we’ll be visiting the animals in the snow.”

“What if they take a fancy to one, want to take it home?”

“Oh no. We are most definitely not going there.”

Nolan laughed, “You could tell them we’d eat it?”

“Oh don’t. I still remember rabbit-gate. You have no idea.”

Nolan laughed, “I still can’t believe I’m doing this.”

“What?”

“Sitting in bed with you, chatting about what we’re doing with your kids and my parents, and looking forward to our few days together.”

“Well, come the New Year, you’ll have your own space downstairs.”

“But we’ll still do this, won’t we?”

Ralph grinned, “You bet. But with additional patter of tiny feet at weekends.”

“I imagined…”

“What?”

“Well, a boyfriend, kids. It seemed so unlikely.”

Ralph rolled his eyes, “And how do you think I feel, I never imagined going with a bloke, never mind everything else.”

“Want to change it?”

“What? You mean what’s happened this year?” Ralph shook his head, “Not a bit? I can’t imagine it now, living by myself until the girls left home for Uni.”

“Neither can I.”

“There is one thing?”

“What?”

“Your parents.”

“My parents?” Nolan stared at him.

“The idea of meeting parents still unnerves me.” Nolan started to speak, but Ralph stopped him, “Oh, it’s not that I think your parents will be a problem, but it keys into the whole going public and admitting it thing. I’ve got my head around most of it.”

“Then we’ll take it slow. As far as my parents are concerned, you’re a friend. A real friend. Someone who helped me this year when things got tricky. Dad offered to use the farm to get a loan or a mortgage to help, but I didn’t want to go down that route unless really necessary. “

“Didn’t want them losing money?”

“Didn’t want to be beholden to them and feel guilty if I made a hash of it.”

“I thought they were supportive?”

“Oh, they are, but it was quite clear from early on that I had to be independent, and financial support after Uni was not to be relied upon. And well”, he shrugged, “Dad’s business has shrunk rather since they moved, and Mum’s farm is the opposite of prosperous.”

“So, you’re on your own.”

“Sort of. But”, he kissed Ralph, “I’m sitting here with you, and we’ve been through it.”

“Together.”

“Yeah.” Nolan paused, “I sort of need the space downstairs, but I don’t want to just be on my own.”

“I get that”, Ralph leaned over and cuddled him. “You and me both. Take it slowly and have plenty of me time, and time together.”

They were quiet for a bit, enjoying their cuddle.

Later, when they finally got up properly, Ralph checked his phone and found that there was a message from Morrie, ‘Merry Christmas, from Gozo!’ with a picture of him and another man, slim, dark curly hair, rather establishment looking, perhaps a City boy or something, both men in colourful short sleeved shirts sitting on a terrace with a view of the sea. The weather looked sunny but cool, better than Parborough though. Both men had glasses of bubbly and were raising them in a toast to the camera. Morrie and Felix. Would it last?

“What are you going to do about Gozo?”

Nolan’s question snapped Ralph out of his reverie, “Gozo? Nothing, I think.”

“You don’t want to go?”

Ralph gave a dry laugh, “Well, it does scare the shit out of me. But I’ve got to bite the bullet some time.”

“Travelling with the girls?”

“Yeah. I know I’m a wimp, but I can’t leave everything to Therese. So, yeah, I’d like to go, but…”

“Morrie?”

“Mmm. And Felix and…”

“What’s going to happen.”

“So, we’ll leave it for a bit. I don’t want to get the girls excited.”

“There is one thing.”

“What?”

“Passports.”

“Passports?”

Nolan rolled his eyes, “Some organised Dad you are. If you take them abroad, they’ll need their own passports.”

“Shit. They will. So…”

“You’ll have to speak to Therese. And Morrie.”

Ralph sighed, “OK. Just not now. Right? For the next day or so, I don’t want to think about the girls or logistics or my firm or yours.”

“Fair enough, so what do you want to do?”

Ralph looked at him and kissed him. “Well, I’d like to fuck on the sofa, and over the kitchen table, have dinner naked, fuck it, spend the next few days naked and fuck like rabbits, wherever and whenever we want.”

Nolan laughed uproariously, “Without having to worry about being interrupted.”

There was a wicked twinkle in Ralph’s eyes, “Got it in one.”

And that’s what they did. More or less.

Whilst this is the end of this arc of Ralph and Nolan's story, there will I hope be further adventures
