True As It Can Be 1. WL's Writing Experiments

   (3 reviews)

A re-interpretation of a Classic Fairy Tale:

Brad Brooks has become isolated, self-destructive, and beastly to others around him. Beau Cocteau is a petite and kindhearted gay college student with no family and few friends. A chance encounter one night will begin a tale as old as time.

Yes, this story is inspired by Beauty and the Beast, aka La Belle et La Bête. I have seen the 1946 french film and the 1991 Disney animated classic film, along with having read the french novel in high school. I want to capture the essence of the story without the fantasy elements. I am not sure if readers will enjoy reading this story as much as I am writing it. I guess only time and reactions will tell, if my approach of writing as "True as it can be" will resonate with anyone.
I leave you with the classic disney theme song:

As said below, this story is well written and is a twist on a classic fairy tale. This story holds true to the way power and money can best honesty, honor and simple rights in our society. This story has sections that really hurt, but this author leaves us with a glimmer of hope that good has a chance in the end. Give this story a read and I think you will leave at the end with deep thoughts and a big hope for future good. W L has a great talent to reframe a story and give us a modern version of a classic, while staying true to the original vision of the creator. Give him a try, you will not be disappointed.

Response from the author:

Thanks, I wanted to keep the spirit of the original fairy tale, but try to remove the fantasy elements to create my own re-interpretation of the story.

A HARD AT TIMES YARN WAS WOVEN INTO A SPELL BINDING TALE..........LOOKING FORWARD TO MANY ANSWERS THAT ARE YET TO COME FROM THIS TALENTED WRITER.  STAN

Response from the author:

Thanks for the flattering words, but I'm just a storyteller who had an idea to tell a story with a few twists and unique views on classics. :)

I do hope that most of the other 40-50 readers are like you and @chris191070in your opinions about this story, there is still so much to talk about. Chip's story is the most pressing of course, but if I write a sequel, I will up the stakes as I expand the setting.

This a modern interpretation of the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast.

We have Brad, who because of events has become isolated, self destructive and beastly. But he begins to change when he rescues Beau, a small, kindhearted student with no family or friends.

Those are the main characters, but the other residents of Keller Hall are just as important, as you'll discover they have all suffered misfortune in there lives.

The main enemy is an individual called Gary, he is an individual that you don't want to mess with.

This isn't an easy story to read in parts, but it is so well written that you really get drawn into the lives of all the characters.

It is a dark story, that features some difficult storylines, but the author leaves it to the individual reader, rather than going into graphic detail.

A truly wonderful story and I look forward to it's sequel.

Response from the author:

Thanks, Chris, this story was hard at times, dark at times, but it is not a tale of despair nor is it a traditional tale of good guys winning everything in the end. An imperfect happy ending made this feel far more honest about the world we live in, while injustice is present, there's still a glimmer of hope through hard work and perseverance.

I want to give readers a hope in reality, rather than an illusion in fantasy.
