  2. Yes, you read the title of this entry correctly. The 2014 Spring Anthology: Nature's Wrath is NOW LIVE!!!! What better way to end the week than with 15 brand new short stories for you to read and enjoy? I decided to do the announcement a bit different and include a brief snippet from the start of each story. Enjoy and thank you to everyone who participated!!! A Ranger's Duty Myr Ryn of Gryphon’s Reach, fourth son of Lord Silas, moved with purpose. The uniform of the King’s Rangers along with the proper salute showing his magical sigil, impossible to duplicate, gave any Ranger passage through the Guard positions. The inner sanctum of every base housed the Ranger Commanders as well as other servants to the King. The base at Land’s End was bigger than most, qualifying as its own fortress. As the largest Ranger stronghold outside the capital, it also held the Ranger General. Ryn, twenty-two winters old, was in his sixth year of serving the King’s Rangers. With his dark burgundy hair and emerald green eyes, he broke many hearts. The scar stretching from his left eye down to his jaw gave him a rugged look that his otherwise youthful appearance lacked. Keep Reading >> Cumulonimbus aditus Mark squinted through the rain, his fingers tapping the steering wheel in a rapid beat, willing the red light to turn green. Now! Now! Now! He briefly entertained the thought of how it would be if he could change the light with his 'secret superpowers', then he scoffed at himself. Yeah, right. When did I turn into a geek? Keep Reading >> David Ron One young man stood out from among the group, excited and animated. He threw his hands about as he talked and smiled, and laughed among his friends. I wondered if his liveliness extended into the bedroom. The thought had barely passed through my mind when he turned and surveyed the room. His gaze caught mine and went no further, imprisoning me with an intensity I had never experienced. It acquainted me with the impression that he was rooting around in my head. I attempted to repay the impact, but the sensation that any moment I would be found wanting and dismissed arrested me. I didn’t want to know how a dismissal by him would present itself. But ahead of me breaking eye contact, some undefined switch seemed to flip. The vibrancy of his eyes went out, his facial expressions became empty, and he was suddenly not the same person sitting in that chair. Keep Reading >> In the Eye of the Storm Bill W It was my first day as a junior in high school and I was excited about being back. I was an upperclassman now, so I was looking forward to having a great year. As I walked into my first period class, I realized that I had never seen this particular teacher before. She appeared to be only a few years older than me, so it was obvious I was going to have a recent college grad for English this year. Shortly after I sat down, the class got underway and the teacher began taking attendance. This was taking longer than it normally would have, because she was taking her time trying to match the faces to the names on the class list. Keep Reading >> Lying Up A Storm joann414 “I can’t, Mom. My plans have been made for over a week. Jim will get angry if I break our date. He said he’s got a surprise for me.” Petey turned to see Jim walk in the kitchen door, his mouth falling open, listening to the conversation. “No, Mom. I’ll call you when I’ve got a free weekend.” Petey shut his phone off, dreading what was coming. “Do you know another Jim or was I the subject of that conversation?” Jim leaned against the cabinet with his arms folded. He watched Petey nervously run his hands up and down the front of his jeans, putting off answering his question. Keep Reading >> Miah's Maze Cia “Seriously? That’s a real thing? You can pay someone to do that to you?” I gaped at him. “Something, not someone.” Keon gulped down half his beer and then belched. He gestured toward the hologram screen on the wall. “They even have advertisements for it.” “That’s ridiculous.” I smacked my glass down on the table. “How can shifters demean themselves like that?” Keon rolled his eyes. “You are such a rube, Nehemiah.” Keep Reading >> Storm at the Twilight of the Gods comicfan “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” That saying is nothing but accurate when you consider the two women who had demanded the appearance of so many of us. When Mother Nature and Gaia gathered the weather gods and goddesses from every pantheon the world has ever known, well let’s just say this isn’t going to be a social gathering in the local mead house. Gaia walked to the table and watched as the rest of the crowd slowly filled the space. No one could deny who or what she represented. Keep Reading >> Substance P Cole Matthews “So, give me a rundown on the trials,” the woman in the cream colored skirt and silk blouse asked as she crossed her long, shapely legs. “I heard they are going quite well and this could be a breakthrough for us.” “It’s early yet, but the mice seem to be responding favorably to the treatment. We weren’t sure it would be easy to measure the effectiveness but they seem to be sleeping more peacefully and they’re not as aggressive,” the man seated behind the desk said. Dr. Jason Hampton watched as his boss inspected her perfectly polished nails. Dr. Carol Littleton was a very together woman whose star was on the ascent at Luminair Labs. Keep Reading >> The Boy Who Was Summer Sasha Distan The end of summer was always a terrible thing, those first few specks of rain falling from a clear blue sky, the threat of encroaching clouds, the knowledge that the days were getting shorter, the nights longer, and the ground more squelchy. First rain can be a lovely thing, soft relief from the heat that bleeds into the beginning of autumn, a chance to stand outside in what feels like a shower, mouth open and upturned, t-shirt clinging to your skin. It rained the day he left me. Keep Reading >> The Lake Dolores Esteban After losing his job, Rick had fallen into a deep depression. His mental state only changed when he read an ad in a magazine. Rick saw his chance. He made a trip to Las Vegas and won 18,000 dollars, more than he had earned in the previous two years. Fortune had favored him. Rick was on a winning streak. He was looking out on the lake, his arm placed around Frank's shoulder. The midsummer night was quiet and warm. A few crickets were chirping. Rick looked at the full moon. "The moon is very big," he said. Keep Reading >> The River Ran Backwards Aaron Penrose At 3:45 in the morning on February 7, 1812, an earthquake struck the southern United States. It was the third in a series of immeasurably violent quakes and it was felt over an area of more than a million square miles. A million miles. Seems unthinkable, doesn’t it? To give you an idea of what kind of an earthquake we’re talking about, here, the historic 1906 earthquake that wiped out eighty percent of San Francisco radiated tremors for approximately six thousand square miles. The continent of North America is approximately nine million square miles. That means one-ninth of a whole continent felt the rage of this hellish thing that punched its way through the earth and, according to one man, “laughed in the face of God.” Keep Reading >> The Storm Singer TMcCallahan Past several small, dying suns and a glorious wasteland of broken stars, the tiny planet of Gadet orbited around three miniature suns. Gadet itself was no bigger than most moons, and the entire planet’s population was less than some major cities on other worlds. But the Gadetans didn’t allow their small size to keep them down. A quick-witted, sharp-tongued, and sometimes acerbic people, they made the most of what they had and weren’t afraid to offer a sarcastic turn of phrase if the teasing about their tiny planet went too far. Half the planet was covered in silvery waters somewhat like the element mercury. The rest of the planet was divided between mountains, forest, and plains. Travel on the planet was done mostly by airship or watership. Keep Reading >> The Vengeance of the Fey Andy78 My two brothers and I had been brought up on my grandmother’s fairy tales. I can remember the four of us sitting by the open fire on a cold winter’s night in her cottage, with a hot milk toddy each, and she would tell us stories that were long forgotten. I also remember on one occasion she invited us for dinner and we were not permitted to talk during the meal, she called it a “Dumb Supper”. Apparently, it was something she held every November 1st to remember those relatives who had died. It had been cold, but not much of the ice and snow. TJ decided to head up to his family’s cabin in Charles City, Iowa. It was always nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Christmas shopping and decorating. He had put in for the vacation time back in June because he knew that this time of year was difficult for him. Ever since his parents had died four years ago, he had had trouble handling the Christmas holidays. Well, you're right, but after much thought, I decided I really didn't want to release the anthology on Friday the 13th. Well, at least, not everywhere! So, without further ado, the anthology had been released. We had a lot of interest in the theme of Pandora's box, to be more precise, 22 authors decided to take up the challenge. Mixed in with the Anthology Veterans are a few Anthology Newbies, so lets make all of them feel welcomed and don't forget to review what you read to let the authors know what you thought about their work! 7. The 2010 GA Winter Anthology is now online! The theme is "Haunted", but interestingly many authors have not gone with a supernatural theme. We have a number of new anthology authors with this anthology, and some strong poetry from past contributors. Many of the stories are quite short, but we also have one of the longest anthology stories I've seen. Take your time and enjoy the collection. Everyone is sure to be something that appeals to them. Graeme GA Anthology Coordinator Altimexis - Possession Bret and Pete decide to explore the site where the football team captain’s body was found earlier that winter, but then Pete starts to act very strangely. Angel Propps - Memory Is Long It is not always the dead who haunt us but the memories of places and loves long gone Bugeye - Consider Arbitrary A life is a song and the past, future and present often sing different lyrics. But, the melody haunts all three. Cia - Hubris He was never alone. Rage against that which torments him has broken him completely. His fate is decided. Comicality - Of The Flesh Haunted by the memory of someone I've never met. Dolores Esteban - Prisoner of the Past He had left his old life behind. At least, that was what he thought. He didn’t realize that his memories were just locked up in some dark chamber of his brain. Jan Vander Laenen - The Angel Can an angel drive you crazy? Johnathan_Colourfield - The Everlasting War The Birth of The Time Travellers and The Everlasting War. Light VS Dark. And the ghost of the ginger haired boy reflecting upon the one thing that created his shame. Or was he really ashamed of it? Kevin Caucher - Quarter after One You always see him call Phil at 1:15. Lily Gilding - Wings of Ink There are people in this world who choose to be haunted by the demons of the past. They are the people who shackle those demons upon their body. Lugh - The Union of Darkness and Light Some faery tales start with a kiss; some end with a kiss. They all take place in a perfect world. Well, if you don't count the wicked step-mother and the prince-eating dragon. This is my version of a modern faery tale. There are no wicked step-mothers nor prince-eating dragons, but not everything is exactly perfect either. And it all starts with a kiss... NightOwl - Tipping the Hourglass We all have regrets in our pasts, we've all made mistakes. Sometimes they haunt us. What if we were truly able to change those mistakes? Rebecca Perlow - Where I Found You After the suicide of his terminally ill mother, Sam Nieman goes on a bender that leads to old memories, older boyfriends and some creative interpretations of philosophical theory. Rilbur Skryler - Fallen Ilaria Ilaria fell almost instantly. The shining towers and towering ramparts of her walls proved useless, and the sinews of the great Knights of Ilarus were shattered under the demon's attack. Etral Et Ilaria must live with the consequences of that failure, though he would give so very much to give up the burden. Stargazer - East of Midnight Why couldn’t Chase just embrace the events that occurred between him and Xander and let that be it? Why did he have to analyze every damn thing? Young Sage - Tell Me That You Love Me The story of a man unable to let go.
  8. The theme for the 2010 Fall Anthology is "No Going Back". Surprisingly, there are a significant number of science fiction and fantasy stories in this anthology. No so surprising, a number of authors have interpreted the theme as being related to marriage, which just shows that we still have a lot of romantics amongst our authors! We also have what I believe is the first lesbian themed story in this anthology. Check it out, as it just goes to prove that when it comes to romance, we're all human. Have fun reading the stories (and two poems) everyone! Just remember to click on the feedback/discussion links at the bottom of each story to take you to the discussion threads in the forums so you can leave the author a comment. A special thanks to all the authors for contributing to the Gay Authors Anthology, and to the editors and beta-readers, without whom the stories wouldn't be the same. Graeme GA Anthology Coordinator Altimexis - A Golden Opportunity When Jack loses his wife of more than 40 years, he finds himself besieged by widows looking for a husband. How strange it is, then, when he realizes the one he wants is his neighbor, Larry. Anyta Sunday - Promise Two boys make a promise, but it might just cost John his life to fulfill it... Bugeye - Allure If life is a dream, then grasping at the unviable If life is all there is, then Why this hunger Cia - Eren's Light Light and Dark are opposing forces, destined to be apart forever. Everyone knows that until someone decides to take what he desires, consequences be damned! Dolores Esteban - Pale Moon Rising He was still waiting for the dazzling white light that announced the arrival of the transmitter cabin. Slowly, though, Adonis realized that something had gone terribly wrong. Emulated - Not my turn Aaron was days away from coming out when his brother held a family meeting... Graeme - Selection Criteria Ensuring the psychological stability of the crew for the first manned interstellar is a big responsibility. A police officer helps a gay through the eve of his marriage jian_sierra - A Chance Encounter Due to their personal circumstances, Bill and Nate only had a day together. But as they get to know each other, something more than physical attraction developed. What happens when the day comes to an end? Johnathan_Colourfield - The End of Time Itself This is the story of the end of everything. The universe depends on one creature. The boy with gingery hair. The universe will not die with a crash, but with a whimper for its soul... Kanaye - Waiting Jared waits for Tane's nice guy mask to slip. Will Tane be the same as Barry, Jared's abusive ex-boyfriend? kevduenas - Shade of Reality A poem on time and memories. Kevin Caucher - A Tug at... Cliff is to leave the city tomorrow, and today, he is meeting Phil. Lily Gilding - Discordant Harmony A lesbian romance. Lugh - My Mystic Knight Two kingdoms at war face a greater challenge to come. The mystic knights heed a warning from the priestess and hatch a plan to bring peace, but first they must find the ones the gods favor. Mark Arbour - Kansas Encounters of the Close Kind Taking chances. Breaking commitments. Myr - Psionic Corp - No Return Mike Valdius has completed his training and is going into deep cover. Can he infiltrate? Quonus10 - The Price of Love An unstoppable evil is threatening the world. Renee Stevens - Mountain Hideout After being attacked, Trace needs both a place to recuperate and a place to hideout from the men who want him dead. Ricky - Resolution-14 Martin Wagner is 14 and different than everyone else in his high school. It worries him but he has a resolution, one that will take him to the top. Rilbur Skryler - Choice Zachary was a goody-two shoes born and bred. He'd never break a rule, or a confidence. And now he faces two 'right' choices, between duty to the law and duty to his friend. Whatever decision he makes, there will be no going back. Young Sage - According to My Observations Though I hate your hair, and you talk way too much about stuff I find boring, you have team spirit and a level head...according to my observations.
  9. The theme for the 2010 Summer Anthology is "Out of This World". While, given the theme, there are a lot of science fiction and fantasy stories, there are also many entries that have taken a different interpretation of the theme. Have fun reading the stories (and one poem) everyone! Graeme GA Anthology Coordinator Altimexis - The Binary Planet Lansley and his parents escape persecution on their home world and seek refuge on a binary planet. Just when he thinks he understands sexual dimorphism, he falls in love with a boy who likes other boys. 10. Sorry all, no prompts for this week. Hope you all are ready to do some reading! The 2015 Summer Anthology: Road Trip is NOW LIVE for your enjoyment. Eight new stories to help you get through the weekend. Don't forget to leave the authors a review to let them know what you think of their hard work. Now, what are you waiting for? Read!!!! 3 PM aditus The office in the back of the coffee shop didn’t have the space to take more than three medium-measured strides, if at all, otherwise you ran into one of the overflowing cabinets. Jonah sat behind Romeo’s desk, feet propped up on a pulled out drawer, silently tracking his friend’s pacing. Step. Step. Dodge the suitcase. Step. Turn. “Maybe I should go up front and make you a valerian tea.” Not so ‘silently tracking’ anymore, but Romeo was starting to make Jonah dizzy. Step. Step. Dodge the suitcase. Step. Turn. “What?” Are We There Yet? Renee Stevens “Jake, hurry and finish cleaning up your room.” I set my son’s bag next to the door and moved into the kitchen as I hollered to my son. “Your mom is going to be here soon.” No sooner were the words out of my mouth than the doorbell rang. “I got it,” Jake yelled. I heard his footsteps running down the hall, followed by the barking of Murray, his nine-month-old puppy. “We’ll both get it.” I followed him to the door. I should have once again reminded him he wasn’t allowed to answer the door by himself, but since I was right there I just let it go. I watched him open the door, but it wasn’t who I was planning on. Boy River Cole Matthews “Apologize to Mr. Miller right now Clay,” the social worker said, fluttering her eyelashes frantically. “We’ve talked about this before.” Ben Miller watched as the woman’s hands sort of flapped as well. He thought Adelaide Getty was very bird-like in her mannerisms. She tended to preen and flicker quite a bit, especially when she was rattled like now. “It’s okay…” Ben started to say, but was cut off. “It’s not okay. Clay needs to learn manners and control his tongue. There are things it is simply inappropriate to say to people.” Adelaide was looking around her as she talked, pointedly not addressing the teen directly. They were at Eastdale Mall getting a few clothes for the impending trip. Nothing the boy had was presentable in public, not really. Exit to Redemption Valkyrie Pete pulled his silver Jaguar up to the hotel entrance. He exhaled sharply in annoyance at the two cars in line ahead of him. He checked his phone as he waited, drumming his fingers on the steering wheel. It only took a few minutes for the efficient hotel staff to unload the luggage from the cars and move them to the valet parking lot, but it felt like forever to the impatient black-haired man. He was annoyed to begin with. His employer required him to attend this conference every year, but Pete would much rather be in the office making trades and earning commission. “It’s about time,” he muttered as the valet opened the car door for him. “My apologies for the wait, sir. Are you here for the finance conference?” From Here to Forever comicfan The bright sunlight sparkled on the waters of Hudson Bay below as Charlie Wagner stood drinking his coffee on the deck of the restaurant. The noise of the patrons as well as his own family dimmed as he felt two arms encircle him. “So how is the sexiest guy in the place making out?” Scott Reeds asked huskily into Charlie’s ear. Charlie turned and smiled at his boyfriend. He had learned to tease Scott and was getting pretty good at it. “I don’t know. I think the waiter is awfully cute. I mean, he is big, strong, and has all that nice hair.” Scott’s deep blue eyes narrowed. “Don’t even think it,” he growled. New York or Bust!!! Krista “Get up, we’re wasting daylight!” My sister’s high-pitched squeal issued from just beyond my bedroom door. Grumbling, I rolled over and sat up in the bed. My morning wood needed coaxing before it decided to behave. I didn’t have time to relax. Glancing over at the clock on my nightstand, I shuddered. Too many days. Too many damn days of being on the road with my sister and her best friend, scouting colleges as far away from here as they could possibly get. The thought worried me a little. Growing up in the middle of nowhere, it seems easy enough to leave it behind. It is the rest of the world that may not wait around for the middle-of-nowhere people to catch up. To try in college so far away from rescue seemed a bit, well, stupid. Picking Up Strays Cia My lips cracked and bled, but I stretched them out in a parody of a grin. No one had anything to smile about… which made my expression all the more disturbing. And likely to work. The bloody tang tantalized me when I licked at the cracks, darting my tongue in and out. I was crouched down, squinting at the dark figure backed by the setting sun. “What you got?” I cranked my head to one side, as if the question confused me. I placed my fingers on my lips, touching the wet spit and blood, smearing it back and forth. With my other hand, I scooped up a handful of the dry grit covering the old road. Rootin' Down The Highway Carlos Hazday “Mmm, I could get used to this. G’day, mate.” As I stretched my arms above my head, to help clear the sleep haze I was still trapped in, I rolled over in the large bed to look at my sleeping companion. “G’day, Brett. All you have to do is say yes, mate. Say yes, and I promise you’ll wake up next to me every morning. Come on! Come fly with me. This could be our big break; it could give us the chance to go anywhere we want.” How the hell did Buck do it? The man had more alcohol the previous evening than I did; he expended as many calories as I did, and he went to sleep just as late. Yet here he was, clearheaded, with a smile as bright as the summer sunshine streaming through the flat’s windows. 2015 Summer Anthology Support Team Proof Team Cia Rec Andy78 Valkyrie Anthology Banner Creation Mann Ramblings Tech Support A.J. 12. Hope you all are ready to do some reading! The 2015 Spring Anthology: Full Circle is NOW LIVE for your enjoyments. Eleven new stories to help you get through the weekend. Don't forget to leave the authors a review to let them know what you think of their hard work. Now, what are you waiting for? Read!!!! At the Right Time jian_sierra "Tell me about yourself, Mr. Connor." I was in a spacious room with glass walls, the Los Angeles skyline could be glimpsed outside. The room itself was barely furnished, a mahogany desk, a white sofa made of leather, and a couple of shelves stuffed with books, empty vases and knick-knacks. Behind the desk, the man interviewing me was seated on this big leather office chair which I had no doubt was comfortable beyond imagination. I was seated in one of the smaller, identical office chairs in front of him, the one that was to his left. The man looked younger than me by a year or perhaps two, in his mid-thirties most probably. He had on a smart three-piece suit, dark blue almost black, his shirt was cream-colored and the necktie was plain royal blue. To complete the effect of the successful businessman-look, he of course wore rimless glasses which, depending on the way he moved or tilted his head, seemed almost not there. An easy smile was on his lips which turned into a strained one probably due to me not saying anything in a while. Beginning Again CassieQ Alex tilted his head back, feeling sweat trickle down his neck as the sun bathed his face. He was hot and drowsy, the muted pounding of the waves breaking on shore and the far off shrieks of children playing creating a lulling melody. He was drifting in the limbo between awake and asleep, when he heard the soft, but unmistakable sound of a body settling into a nearby chair. Alex figured that Derek would be the only one to take the seat but he cracked an eye open cautiously, just in case and smiled a little. Derek was in the chair, wearing standard beachwear: a T-shirt with his swimming shorts, sunglasses. Alex knew that underneath his glasses, his eyes were rimmed with dark circles and that the shirt hid a frame that was bony, bordering on gaunt, but now he just looked like a slender guy enjoying his time at the beach...or trying to, at any rate. "I told you this was a nice place, right?" Alex said, optimistic that Derek had decided to leave the little villa and venture out. Best-Solution Cia My leg ached, but I was able to push up on my hands without pain making me feel like the muscles, tendons, and ligaments were trying to detach from the bones. Moshe and Lisco were curled up together on the other side of the bed. Lisco’s hair was still damp from our late-night shower. He’d insisted on cleaning up after we finished fixing the fences and getting the cattle back where they belonged. Then he’d showered again after I made the whole mess of yesterday up to him. To be fair, between me and Moshe, he’d been quite the mess. Water was always at a premium here in the Interland, but they’d hooked up some sort of system with their shuttle which reclaimed and recycled the water, making it fit for use again. I still didn’t know how, exactly, but since we’d had plenty of water for our showers yesterday, I wasn’t going to complain. That was one indulgence I had enjoyed in the city. Closing the Circle Valkyrie Elliot made one final adjustment to the engine, then stepped back and momentarily surveyed his work before sliding into the driver’s seat. He turned the ignition and the engine roared to life, settling down almost immediately into a contented purr. “Yes!” He pumped his fist as he jumped out of the car and ran into the shop’s office. “Hey sweetheart, you’ve gotta listen to this!” Max looked up from the paperwork he was completing. A glob of mayo from his sandwich stuck to his beard. Elliot giggled. “Wipe your chin, babe.” Max wiped his face with a napkin and followed his fiancé into the car bay. Elliot gestured to the ’52 Chevy with a big grin. “Hey, you got it started! Great job, babe!” Max enveloped Elliot in a bear hug, spinning him in a circle. “Easy, tiger! You don’t want me to get motion sick all over you!” Daydreams Dolores Esteban He's the kind of guy Who knows a lot about women He likes to talk about girls But when he starts to daydream He likes to dream of boys Eight-fifteen aditus Romeo watched the clock over the entrance door. The second hand hopped over the twelve and another minute had gone by. Eight-thirteen a.m. “One maple mocha to go, please.” Like every morning, Lila was getting a coffee for her boss. “And something to go with that that will make her real fat.” Their relationship wasn’t the best. Grinning, Romeo grabbed one of the tall paper cups, poured a double shot of espresso, and mixed it with chocolate syrup. He showed her the bottle. “Lots of sugar.” She grinned enthusiastically. After adding steamed milk, he lifted the spoon dripping with whipped cream. “That’s the real thing, not that spray can stuff.” Going Home comicfan I could hear the song playing on my iPod and found it sort of amusing. I really guess I was in a New York state of mind, but only because I had to go back. There was so much there I didn’t want to have to deal with. That was the whole reason I had left home ten years ago. Funny, you can’t truly escape your past. Life has a way of forcing you to go full circle and face the things you would rather forget. “Please return your seats to an upright position.” The flight attendant drew everyone’s attention with her sweet southern drawl. “At this time we ask once again that all electronic devices with wifi enabled are turned off as we begin to prepare for our descent. We will be arriving on time at McArthur Airport in Islip, New York. We hope you have enjoyed your flight.” I looked out the window, and as we passed below the clouds, could already make out the ocean and Fire Island as the plane approached our final destination. Instantly Sasha Distan I met him on a full moon, though at the time I had no idea of the significance of this. I was walking home from work in something of a funk, because despite having followed every instruction given to me by my supervisor, due to some tiny error deep in the source code of the project, the whole function I’d been working with had failed to run. So I had stayed late, dug through a pile of gibberish written by my predecessor, and worked out why he’d been politely but firmly ‘let go’ three months previously. I had planned to go and enjoy the first evening of good weather in the park on my way home, stretch out on the grass, and forget all about work, and the enormous pile of washing up I had to do, but by the time I left the sun was sinking into the twilight, and the city was full of fast moving tail lights as everyone else tried to get home. A chill breeze had picked up, rolling with it the scent of salt from the river: there was no point doing anything else other than get home, get warm, and lounge on the couch in sweatpants while browsing the take-out menus. I waited at the corner of Seventh and Charleston for the walk signal, contemplating the potential benefits of garnishing pizza with duck sauce, and as the light flashed green I took a step off the pavement. I wasn’t looking when he hit me, and we collided hard enough that I was forced back and off balance. Max Cauler Ron Why did he come? He didnʼt owe the old man anything nor his mother . . . What did she ever do to stop him? Nothing but to patch him up when the old man was done. He was his own man now, and he had no need of false affection; he owed him nothing. Not that the old man would ever ask for anything. The crack-crunch of frosted grass underfoot—silvered blades crushed and snapped—were his company on the walk up the slope. Nearer to the top of the rise, a bright-red cardinal sang from a winterʼs oak tree nearby, bare of all but a few leaves wizened and curled around their edges—grasping little fingers. The crisp, dry air carried the song clear and sweet; the color reminded him of blood. The phantom taste of iron bloomed on his tongue with the association—he spat on the cold ground, watched until crystals began to form in the spittle—the old man had made sure of that; the taste wasnʼt something to forget. Nightfall jamessavik The phone was ringing in my apartment when I got home from work. I missed it before I could get there. I got out of my work clothes and hit the shower. Construction work was fun and paid well but it was hot, dirty and dangerous. It didn’t take too much of it for me to figure out that I didn’t want to do it for a career. For now it was paying the bills. The phone rang again and interrupted a perfectly wonderful dream as I was napping on the couch. “Hello.” “Jimmy. Thank God I got you.” The Scrapbook Cole Matthews The ‘ding-ding-ding’ sound of someone winning jolted Brian out of his trance. He’d been watching Roger push the cart with a new beer keg across the playing room floor of Ruby Jo’s Casino and appreciating the show. He shook his head like a wet dog and turned to get the step stool out of the way. “You’re staring at him again,” a tinkling voice teased him. Brian turned and saw his coworker Lydia was shaking her head with a smirk gracing her bright red lips. “He’s gonna catch you and beat the crap outta you. Don’t you know that?” she chided him. “I’m not staring,” Brian mumbled. He brushed his sandy-blond hair back out of his eyes. “I was making sure he didn’t have any problems.” A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who has helped with the 2015 Spring Anthology: Full Circle 2015 Spring Anthology Support Team Proof Team LJH Rec Andy78 Valkyrie Anthology Banner Creation Mann Ramblings Tech Support Myr Also, Thank You to all the participating authors and their teams! 19. Nope, you're not dreaming!!! While I'm sure most of you weren't expecting the anthology to go live for another day or two, I decided to go ahead and make it live a day early. If you've been looking for something new to read, here's your chance. Twelve brand new stories for you to enjoy, but don't forget to leave the authors a review to let them know what you thought. I could keep rambling on, but I think I've said all that needs said, so go ahead, you know you want to! Ready... Set... READ!!! Allah's Revenge Carlos Hazday “Are you sure about this?” “Completely certain. Even if there is an element of risk, we have to do it, Aitor. We can’t ignore a cry for help. Based on everything we’ve learned since leaving Canada, the danger is minimal. It has been over ten weeks since the original incident; we should be safe. The chances of him being sick and still alive are almost nonexistent.” “I trust you, Lars. Just trying to be careful, babe. For both of us.” “It’s the protective soldier in you, one of the many reasons why I love you. Go get your kill, that was a great shot; I’ll try to find our man.” “Fire off a round if you need me,” said Aitor by way of good bye. Break the Chain wolfwriter I went for my annual walk in the snow to the spot where I would say a prayer for my parents. It had been hard on me since they died five years ago, but I never forgot them. I prayed for them and also said a prayer of thanks for Stephan coming into my life. The past year had seen us as a couple, and I couldn’t be happier about it. As I walked back I got lost in my thoughts. I thought back to when I met Scott. God, three years ago at Christmas was that whole disaster. I am glad time has marched on and I am actually looking forward to Christmas this year. As the snow fell I couldn’t help but remember it was snowing the night I met Scott too. “Hey TJ, want to go to the club?” my work partner Mike asked as we walked out to our cars. “Which club?” “How about the new one that just opened, The Bear Cave?” Fall From Grace Bill W How did it happen? How did he go from being one of the most celebrated people in the kingdom to suffering the humiliation of an arrest, trial and conviction for just being who he was? Was it right? Was it fair? He'd been hailed as having made the most important individual contribution that helped his kingdom win the war, but now he was scorned and ridiculed for responding to an inborn, primal urge. Was this the way the kingdom repaid a hero? It had been a long and bloody war, one that the kingdom and its allies were on the verge of losing. The other side was more powerful and had better weapons, so the kingdom and those aligned with them needed an edge. In his determined and quiet manner, this man stepped forward and helped to come up with a way to decypher the intricately coded messages the other side was sending to communicate with each other. This singular accomplishment eventually helped to end the bloodshed and bring the war to a conclusion. His accomplishments were not only lauded, but he was also bestowed with many honors. Getting to the Happily Ever After jamessavik It’s funny how your life can change in an instant. One event can change everything that comes after. That moment arrived for Randy Austin Taylor, affectionately known as “Rat” to his friends at Denton Academy, on a sunny Tuesday afternoon during his fifth period Geometry class on May 16, 1978. He was summoned to the office by one of the girls who worked there. His anxiety was heightened by the way she spoke quietly to his teacher and looked at him sideways. That look spoke volumes. As he took the long walk to the office he tried to think of anything he might have done to merit the attention of Vice Principal Maxwell. His primary duty was to tend to disciplinary matters at the Academy which he did with gusto. A large paddle nicknamed Old Hickory with which he tended to such matters was prominently displayed in his office. Heart Brake Sasha Distan If not for Russell Brannigan’s brake cable, none of this may ever have happened. If that stupid kid had just taken his car to the shop when it started making a funny squealing noise upon applying pressure to the brakes, I would not be here, alone at midnight, sitting on the narrow footbridge over the dark swirling waters of the river, drinking what remains of a bottle of honey-whiskey I had previously been saving for something special. Because of Russell Brannigan, and his faulty brakes, I now sit dwelling on the worst events of my life. * I braked and pulled the Land Rover to a halt at the junction, waiting for the car in front of me to seize his moment, turn left across two lanes of traffic, and join the stream of commuters going home for the evening. I had timed my day badly, which I could have avoided, but I hated going into the city and had waited until the store was about to close before jumping into my car and heading out to get groceries. If I had been smarter, or if I hadn’t lost myself in the soothing motion of planing a piece of cedar into the arched curve of a chaise-lounge, I would have avoided rush hour and would not have spent the last hour in stop-start traffic, staring at the red taillights of the car in front. Junction Cia “So we just dump this out on the ground?” I could barely span the rectangle of scratchy grass. Moshe held two of them by the cords tying them into the rough shape, easily hefting one in each hand. “Well, you need to break the twine and break off flakes of the hay, spreading it out in a long line. That way the cattle can come eat all at the same time. And you might not want to take too long about it. They’re coming.” “They’re coming?” I squeaked. Those things were a lot bigger than I’d thought they’d be. And they had these wicked sharp horns on their wide heads. Miah laughed. “Relax, Lisco. They won’t hurt you. Unless they’re spooked, cattle are pretty gentle.” I could hear them coming, making those deep, low calls. They said nothing, but carried a lot like Moshe’s vibrations. I didn’t want to be standing anywhere between them and their food when they arrived, no matter what Miah said. Maillard's Cole Matthews “It smells like you’re burning that steak,” Ricky called out to his line cook Marc. “You need to char the other side dude.” “It’s not burning dumbass. It’s searing,” Marc barked, angry he’d been caught thinking about something else other than his job. Marcus Adamson was proud of his work. He’d been working at Maillard’s since he graduated from Gastronomique four years ago. He had started at the bottom, doing the cold prep and worked his way from the salad and appetizer stations, through sous prep to working the meat and fish stations on the line. On the nights his boss, Ricky Shannon, didn’t work, he would even expedite the line. Marcus loved his job and right now it was the only thing holding him together. The cook shifted the fillet with the tongs to char the side. He’d gotten caught up in his own thoughts about what he would do after work. When he had a home it wasn’t a problem. Since last Tuesday, it had. Losing his heart and bed messed him up. Marc had to quiet the voices somehow. Mike's Pinball Life comicfan “Twelve dead in freak chain reaction this morning. The fog was thicker than expected when the semi slammed on its brakes on Highway 14 this morning causing the twenty-two car accident. It took the police and rescue workers ….” “Turn off the TV, Mike. I don’t want to keep hearing about that awful disaster.” Mike turned off the television as his mother rushed by for the third time, sliding a bobby pin into her hair as she raced past on the way to her pocketbook and the front door. “I’ll be home late. Remember, there is a TV dinner in the freezer or money for a pizza by the phone. Eat something.” She slipped on her coat before giving Mike a peck on the cheek. “Try to call your friends, would you? I know this hasn’t been easy for you, but things can only get better.” Oh My! Bill W This all started when I was pledging one of the more popular fraternities, Phi Alpha Gamma. My name is Donovan Estes and I'd decided to do this because I wanted to take part in the total college experience. The pledge period culminated with what they called Greek Week. It was a period during which a bunch of different activities were held and all of the sororities and fraternities were expected to participate. Along with various social functions, it also included both the Greek Olympics and Greek Talent Show. "Estes, I'm signing you up for the talent show," the frat's pledge master announced. He'd obviously noted my athletic prowess and realized I didn't possess any. "Who am I doing it with?" I asked, since I wanted to know who I was being paired with. "No one," he responded. "The guys in the band will perform too, since each Greek chapter can enter two acts, but you'll be on your own. We need everyone else for the other activities or they're involved in setting up one of the other functions held during the week." Promise Stars aditus November 24th Max sat in his car, watching white flurries gliding down the windshield, melting into drops of water, only to freeze again on the cold metal. The lights of the streetlamps blurred as the snow came down harder and harder. He didn’t want to go outside, but when the cold crept up his legs, the dying snowflakes rapidly lost their fascination in favor of the promise of warmth at his apartment. That and Aristoteles and Plato are probably wondering where the heck their can opener is. Sighing, Max flipped up the collar of his pea coat, pulled a bright green scarf out of its pocket, and wrapped it around his neck several times. He grabbed a beanie and a pair of gloves from the passenger seat, put them on, and grimaced when he caught a glimpse of himself in the rearview mirror. He really wasn’t the hat wearing kind of guy; he always looked like a dork. For a moment he thought about pulling it off his head again, but then - with such weather - who would see him? Proximate Cause Valkyrie71 Elliot stirred, moving away from the bright sunshine streaming through the window. He opened his eyes, frowned, and looked at the alarm clock on the nightstand. Eight a.m. “Shit!” He bounded out of bed and into the bathroom. He took a shower and dressed in record time. The only thing on his mind as he grabbed his briefcase and coat was getting to the office in time for his morning meeting. “Whoa! Where’s the fire?” Max poked his head out of the kitchen just as Elliot was about to open the door. “I’m late! The alarm never went off!” “You told me you didn’t need to be at the office until nine. I turned the alarm off so you could sleep in. I made breakfast. I thought we could eat together.” Rejoice! Bill W "I have some good news to share with all of you today," Duncan Fitzpatrick announced to his employees, whom he had unexpectedly called together. "My daughter-in-law has given birth to twin sons!" There were a lot of smiles, cheers and shouts of 'Congratulations', as the smile on Duncan's face widened. After allowing this spontaneous expression of happiness to continue for about a minute, Duncan signaled for everyone to quiet down, so he could speak again. "As you know, my wife and I have been blessed with a good life and a great deal of financial success. My car dealership has prospered, while many others have failed, and it has provided continued employment for all of you. However, not everything in our life has gone this well." Duncan paused briefly and scanned the faces before him, to see how they were reacting to his last statement. Rudolph's Tijuana X-mas Mann Ramblings It was Christmas Eve and I watched the snow collecting on my antlers and fur. It wasn't light and fluffy like a snow-globe or a favorite artist's holiday rendering, more like when we dumped the whole box of white glitter in the elves toilet. Who knew it would be such a mess? A fast, wet coating turned my glowing nose into a cheap lava lamp. Wonderful.] I shook off inside the main workshop, the clop of my hooves masked by the insane flurry around me. Hammers and soldering guns were making quick work of the last loads of toys needed for the holiday. The cacophony of industry echoed in the factory as the horde of workers struggled to keep up with the Christmas toy demand. The enormous red sleigh was the centerpiece of the workshop with an overflowing sack of gifts weighing down the rear end. The little toymakers were dumping more packages into it from an endless hand-off assembly line. I could imagine the seams bursting in mid-flight, spewing little Timmy's Tonka toys all over the northern continent. I looked at the eight reindeer strapped to the front of the sleigh and looked out the window. The snowfall was getting heavier. It was only a matter of time before a new bridle and harness would be added to the front. I wondered if there was time to sneak out without being seen. Body and Soul comicfan I finally left him. Who would have thought I would have the courage to do it? I sure as hell didn’t, but I did it, even if it meant I had to leave in a goddamn ambulance. I mean, when you have a roof over your head and are mainly left alone, you can handle a lot. “Please, just lie still, sir. I know you are in pain, but we have to get this IV in, and then we can adjust the breathing tube. Nancy, please let Dr. Avold know he is awake.” I hear them run around me like ants trying to patch me up. They seem to think the scars they see are the worst. They should only know the truth. “I want the dose high to begin with. He has massive injuries, and I don’t want him to wake up. We are going to have to induce a coma to give his body time to heal.” Bridging the Chasm Cia Miah glanced over his shoulder at me, eyebrows drawn down in a scowl. “You can put me down now.” “No.” I smiled at him. “Don’t you think you should help Lisco pack your stuff?” he asked. I shook my head. “No. He’s faster than me anyway. Better I stay out of the way. Besides, I like you in my arms.” I did. Miah was solid but no challenge for my strength. I almost wished he hadn’t gotten the hover chair to move around in until his hands healed. If we’d known how scared he was, and that the pilltock juice from the plants in the dome would affect him, we’d never have set up the mock chase. Trying to bond with a human was a lot more complicated than I’d thought it would be—who knew some of them didn’t like being hunted? Bright Thunder Sasha Distan Seth DaCosta put his head back and opened his mouth to taste the rain. To him, one of the best things about living in south Florida was the region’s propensity to dispense thunder, lightning, and copious quantities of rain with delicious predictability. All afternoon the rising wind had been chopping up the sea, making the waves fun, dangerous and challenging. Visitors and tourists stayed well out of the water, but Seth was not alone out there in the breakers with his favourite red and white surfboard and his cropped wetsuit. Locals and morons were the only ones who liked to surf in storms, and as the next big wave began rolling in, Seth jumped up onto his board to a crack of thunder like the smashing of marble headstones. He cheered in delight, and rode the wave all the way to the beach. Out of the sea, the rain started coming down in buckets, and Seth unzipped his suit and rolled it down to his hips before planting his surfboard in the sand and simply standing there being bathed by the warm rain. Emergence Valkyrie71 I retched as I approached the dilapidated house. I wondered why we were even here. With a stench this bad, the police should have called the coroner, not paramedics. Kevin grimaced and handed me a bottle of Vicks VapoRub. I was glad I hadn’t eaten lunch yet. A policeman ran out of the house and threw up on the lawn. A fireman followed and shook his head. “You boys better get suited up before coming in here. It’s pretty bad.” ‘Pretty bad’ didn’t even come close. The mailman had called the police after noticing an increase in the pervasive smell that surrounded the place around the same time the mail started accumulating. The occupant was a known hoarder with a belligerent past with local authorities. Kevin and I donned white protective suits along with air masks and the VapoRub. Family Tree Renee Stevens “Maybe we should have waited until next weekend.” Ean slung the backpack over his shoulder and shut the truck door. “We’ll be fine.” Tyler adjusted the shoulder holster he’d donned as soon as he’d gotten out of the truck. “Somehow, the fact that you borrowed your dad’s pistol doesn’t reassure me.” Ean shook his head and watched Tyler check the chamber and the safety before sliding the pistol into the holster. “Neither does the fact you haven’t been up here in years. We’ll be lucky if we don’t end up lost.” “Have a little faith.” Tyler chuckled. “I may not have been here in years, but this is where I spent a lot of my childhood. As for the pistol, you never know. It’s always better to be prepared, especially since I remember my dad finding signs of a mountain lion just across from camp one year. We weren’t allowed to go climb on the rocks across from camp after that. Well, not without an adult at least.” Fang and Claw comicfan Bill sat quietly in the corner watching the three men sitting at a table at the other end of the bar. He hated that he had to come across the country to deal with this, but when the council made its decision, that was final. He had barely crawled home from the last mission they had sent him out on, only to turn around and be sent here. However, even he had to admit the murders had to stop. The only problem was, he knew one of the two men before him was the possible killer, and the third was making him want to go over and blow his own cover. “Want another?” The barmaid glanced at him, her eyebrow cocked as she wiped down his end of the bar. “Just make it a soda. I have to drive later.” Bill turned on the charm as she watched. He smiled, winked, and slipped a few more dollars across for her tip. He’d been nursing the same beer for nearly an hour. Festering Wounds Bill W My name is Bob Ross and I'll be retiring as a teacher when the school year ends. In preparation for this, I began removing the personal items from my classroom that I had collected over the years and took them home. As I stored them in my den, I spotted several dusty, old journals sitting forgotten on one of the shelves. In them were recorded my memories of the classes I'd taught over the years. Like any educator, we tend to take notice of the good students, as well as those we've had problems with. We also remember the students that should have done better and those we could have done more to help. Instinctively, I grabbed one of the journals from the shelf and began to reminisce about the various students I'd taught over the years. Regrettably, far too many had struggled with issues at home, so I found myself thinking about a few of them now. The issues I'm talking about not only affected their educational achievement, but they also left a mark on the lives of these students in general. In Sickness and in Health aditus He sat beside her bed, holding her hand. She was thin, too thin. Her skin was yellow, as were the whites of her eyes, a telltale sign of liver failure. Sometimes she would fall asleep for several minutes, and then, when she woke, she had this faraway look, as if seeing something nobody else in the room could see. She was forty years old and dying. According to her doctors it would happen in the next few days. Nothing could be done; the cancer had come back. *** I hadn’t seen him for almost two years when I met him again at the post office a week ago. We hadn’t parted exactly on good terms back then. Sometimes I talk without thinking. He was looking good. When he saw me he came right over, his hand outstretched to take mine in a firm grip, a smile on his face. I expected the usual ‘How are you?’ ‘I’m fine’ talk, a little awkward at first maybe because of the things that had happened between us. I never expected it to turn out like it did. Into the Fire Cole Matthews “What do the four H’s represent?” the tall man at the front of the group asked. “I pledge my head to clearer thinking, My heart to greater loyalty, My hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my family, my club, my community, and my country.” The group chanted in unison. Delbert chuckled as he heard his buddy Orv add, “and for hot dames.” He was always making a joke. Sometimes they were even funny but Del always had to laugh at him. Always. Lawyer or Mechanic? Valkyrie71 Elliot jumped when he felt a pair of arms snake around his waist and squeeze him tightly, narrowly missing the open cabinet door. “Hey, hun.” Elliot spun around and smacked Max on his chest. “You scared the shit out of me! I have enough scars from whacking my head on the hood of my car when Pete used to sneak up on me. I don’t need to add any more!” He rubbed the back of his head. Max replaced Elliot’s hand with his own and drew him close, kissing his forehead. “Sorry, babe. I thought you heard me come in,” Max said, chagrined. Primal Instinct Valkyrie71 The man crouched low to the damp earth and touched the small indentation. The track was fresh, only minutes old. He rose and continued down the path that was invisible to those less observant. His bare feet made no noise as he stealthily walked forward, trailing his hands along the occasional broken piece of vegetation marking his quarry’s path. He heard a twig snap and stopped, listening intently. After a brief period of silence, he slowly crept forward to a small stand of shrubs and peered through them. He held his spear close, ready to fly at a moment’s notice. He held his breath as he spied the small deer he’d been tracking for hours. The little animal was at a bad angle; if he threw his spear now, he would surely miss. He waited with the patience of a skilled hunter as the creature grazed in the small clearing. The animal turned toward him, providing the perfect opportunity for the hunter to strike. The spear sailed noiselessly through the air and found its mark unerringly. The little deer staggered forward and collapsed. The man was upon the deer in seconds, eviscerating it with a sharpened stone and eating the warm liver and kidneys before other predators could scent the kill and drive him off. The deer was lean, but there was enough meat to last for days. He proceeded to expertly butcher the animal, then stopped abruptly. The ambient noise of the forest had changed. Ripped Foster My self torn meant Torment Towering Abyss My view from inward Outward On the top Of the bottom S.C.A.R.S. 2094 Bill W The Severe Climate Awareness and Relocation Services unit, S.C.A.R.S. for short, was founded in 2043 and charged with relocating individuals and families living in areas that were most affected by the rising sea level. Those working for the agency were assigned to assist the communities that were becoming inundated with salt water and where the homes and businesses were slowly being reclaimed by nature. This meant there were regional offices situated all along the east coast, west coast, Gulf coast and Mississippi River Delta to assist the residents in those areas that could no longer stay where they were. The water level had risen 4.5 feet (1.5 m) over the past century, so the oceans currently covered vast swaths of land along the rivers that emptied into them, as well as much of the former coastline. Unfortunately, many of the affected areas were the same locations that had attracted a great deal of residential and commercial development over the past 200 years. Some had even become home to popular tourist attractions, but now these areas were either partially or totally uninhabitable. Due to the ever increasing amount of land and structures that were being overtaken by the rising sea level, they could no longer function in their previous capacity. Scars Upon The Mountain DynoReads Fields of Lava Gray dust and smoke darkened the skies. No animal remained on the mountain to be troubled by the hot, harsh air. The lucky ones had fled down the slope and found refuge nearby. A few tree skeletons clung stubbornly to the hillside. The smoldering remains of once proud trees testified to the destructive force of the volcanic eruption. Weeks passed. Cooling rivers of lava slowly turned to stone. Beneath the surface, the heat and pressure created sparkling stones; unseen treasure prized by greedy and careless men. Above, the wind playfully stirred up volcanic ash and dust. Small, gray eddies danced across the rock, uncaring of the heat or the fragility of the rocky crust. Tired of the game, the gusts changed directions and the suspended particles slowly drifted down. The beginnings of fertile soil are laid… Stitching Our Memories Together Bill W I met Stone the summer before entering fourth grade. My family had just purchased a house in another neighborhood, which was on the other side of town from where we used to live. I didn't want to move and was devastated that I would have to leave all of my friends and classmates behind. It was one of the worst nightmares that someone my age would ever have to go through. Almost as soon as the movers finished taking the last items out of the moving van and had placed everything in the house, I sneaked out to the backyard so I could sulk. At the moment I didn't want to be in the house around my parents, because they were happy and I wasn't. They were scurrying around the place getting everything organized and commenting about how wonderful the new house was, but I didn't think it was so great. I liked our old house much better and missed my friends, so none of this seemed wonderful to me. As I moved farther away from the house, I tried to remember if I'd closed the sliding patio door that led from the family room. I was in such a hurry to get out of there that I couldn't recall if I'd shut it on the way outside. The Crow's Fist Celethiel To settle a score Command me strip Blood on the floor I taste the whip You hurt me so For what you shun Much to my woe I cannot run Tough Love joann414 Curt slid his key into the lock and turned the knob, pushing at the door with his knee. “Trey, I’m home. I did a little Christmas shopping today and bought homemade chili down at Mamie’s Diner for dinner tonight. Trey?” Frowning, Curt kicked the door shut, dropping his shopping bags carelessly onto the rug in the den before carrying the bag that contained the container of chili into the kitchen. Depositing it onto the counter, he searched the counter and front of the refrigerator for a note from Trey, his boyfriend of three years. Feeling concerned, he pulled his cellphone from his coat pocket and dialed Micky, his friend and Trey’s therapist. “Hey, bud. Did Trey have an appointment with you this evening?” “It’s Friday, Curt. You know I see him on Thursday evenings so he doesn’t miss any work. Why? What’s up?” Curt, feeling a little overprotective sighed before speaking into the phone. “I’m a little worried. It’s not like him not to leave a note if he goes somewhere after work. I’d told him I was going to the mall when I got off and would be home by seven. It’s a little after that now and he’s not here.” Vivid Yettie One I am not quite sure how I want to be remembered. The most vivid recollection I can call on was that constant smell of cordite which hung in the air after the bombardments began. It was so thick you could almost taste it. And then there was the noise. More than anything, that noise shook my soul. It was a constant attack on every sense a man had stuck in them miserable trenches. The mud, the rain, the fear of death… I could live with those, process them, accept them, deal with them, but that incessant concussion of blast after blast ripping through the ground, the tremors reaching into the very fibres of my muscles, the dust raining down in a fine sheen that made the light seem blurry and left a film of grit in the mouth and just below the nose. It was that eternal shaking that troubled me most. Night after night, day after day. And when it stopped….

Anything For My Brother Comicfan Paul lay across the left side of the bed, his arms wrapped around his lover. He smiled as he looked out the window at the falling snow, the cat sitting near it, tapping as the large flakes fell just outside the double pane. Finally, life was going his way. He had a new job, his lover, and all was right with the world. He leaned over to nuzzle closer and … brrrrringg … brrrrringgg … brrrrringg! He opened one eye and stared at the bright red light of his alarm clock showing it was barely five minutes after midnight. He hated that he was dragged out of the best dream he had experienced in months. Brrrringg! He stretched and snagged his cell phone off the nightstand as he forced himself to sit up in bed. “What?” he snarled into the phone. Consolation Parents Bill W I was sound asleep when my cell phone began to ring. I always leave it on the nightstand where it will be easy to reach and the ringtone indicated the call was coming from my sister's house. Although I didn't have any idea what she might want, I figured it must be important for her to be calling at this hour. Fortunately, it hadn't awakened my boyfriend, Jeremy, but then again he can sleep through just about anything. I glanced over at his mop of dirty blond hair extending above the sheet, as I groggily reached over and answered the phone. "Hey, sis. What's up?" I offered in greeting, slightly perkier than I though I was capable of at that hour of the morning. "This is Officer Light from the Jefferson Police Department," the voice responded. "Are you Scott Fisher, the brother of Kelly Coleman?" I Wish I Could Back Up DynoReads Jean Claude "Savage" Saville sang along with Alan Jackson as the song played on the garbage truck radio. Halfway down the east side of Burled Oak Drive, a sudden movement out of the corner of his eye caught Savage's attention, and his foot slammed down on the brake pedal. Savage's fingers clenched the steering wheel as if he could stop the truck by sheer strength alone. A silent prayer on his lips, Savage helplessly watched a toddler, wearing only a diaper, running down the driveway in front of him. The garbage truck's brakes squealed as it finally stopped just short of the driveway. A pair of kangaroos fell from their perch on the dashboard, landing on the floor. The sound of the horn was like a siren in Savage's ears and his body shook at the sudden sound. It was only afterward that he realized it had been his horn. The toddler had also stopped running, startled by the loud horn. He stood safely in the driveway, a few feet back from the road. Savage, with his heart pounding and chest heaving from fright, watched the toddler's wide eyes fill with tears. Last Call K.C. Rachel woke with a jolt. It took a moment for her foggy mind to recognize the annoying buzzing sound. The screen of her cell phone lit up her tiny bedroom when it rang again on her nightstand. Fumbling with the phone, she blinked, trying to focus her sleepy eyes, but it was helpless. She was blind without her glasses. Clumsily grabbing her phone, she answered with an automatic swipe of her thumb. “Hello?” Rachel answered, still in a haze. “Rachel?” the caller asked, as the screen of her cell phone went black, plunging the room back into darkness. Magic in the Air Andy78 I’d asked Jason McCaig to the school formal about eight weeks ago and he turned me down. He turned me down so quickly that my head was still spinning. It seemed as though he was not quite yet ready to be out to the world. We’d been ‘together’ for nearly two years, since we turned fourteen. He had no problem with me sucking him off or bending me over and giving me a good seeing to, but God forbid just the thought of us slow dancing with each other in front of our friends really freaked him out. Since I couldn’t go with the person who was allegedly my boyfriend, I decided I’d have to find another boy to go with. Jason was the only gay kid I knew in my school, I had absolutely no intention of asking a girl, and since it was obvious that I couldn’t ask any of the other boys in my year, I decided to fall back on an old family trait: magic. My family had always been magical; it was just that we hadn’t used it in over a century. Max's Garage Valkyrie71 “I’m very disappointed in you, Conners.” Here we go again, thought Elliot. He put on his best poker face and braced himself for the upcoming verbal onslaught. His boss stopped pacing around the room and put both his hands on his desk, leaning toward Elliot. “You settled for half of what we could have been awarded in the Szmansky case. I demand an explanation.” He settled into his chair and steepled his fingers, looking at Elliot expectantly. Elliot took a deep breath. “Szmansky Brothers Hardware is a mom and pop operation. If they hadn’t settled they would have lost their business. They still might.” The Bachelor Farmer Cole Matthews Sven Tollefson stood by the rail fence looking at his dying corn. He wiped the sweat from his brow with a blue handkerchief and felt despair well up in him. All over Cottonwood County, thousands of farmers were seeing the same thing. Crops dying from a heat wave coupled with a severe drought. The corn leaves were still green but hanging wilted from stems that were almost gray. It wouldn’t take much longer before most of the field was dead. “Damn!” he exclaimed to no one since no one else was around. Sven took a hike over through his little grove of trees and looked at his clover field. There would be no second crop this year. The clover was yellow and stunted. In some patches, where the soil was quite sandy, the clover wasn’t even yellow. It was brown, dormant from the lack of moisture. He walked through the field and wondered, ‘What am I going to do?’ Weaving Their Way Cia “So where is home? And if you say that damn dome, I’m going to call Dr. Connor back,” I said. The shifters wanted to take care of me until I could take care of myself, however long that took. Until then, my plans to get out to my stake and start working on my future were on hold. “Oh, no. We have a nice apartment on the south edge of the city.” Moshe grinned. “Big enough for me, even.” I raised one eyebrow. “There are no nice apartments on the edge of the city. Now, apartments on the north side, by the coast… those are nice.” Trees and hills weren’t exactly considered prime view material, and it took hours to trek to the beach through the city, even using the transfer system. I’d gone to the south side, once, with my college roommate, Keon. I’d never gone back. Zugzwang aditus Paul sat in the back of the little café staring at a tiny crack in his coffee mug. A week ago, he'd had to watch Sam kissing Mark, and his plan to tell Sam what he felt for him had been overtaken by reality – a reality in which Sam still loved Mark, or so it had seemed at the time. Like the idiot he was, he'd run when he should have stayed, leaving behind a perfectly cooked three-course dinner for two. With candles. And wine. He had smashed his phone, ranted to his sister, cried in her arms and then had worked day and night because Maya had accepted so many orders. Orders for weddings, for office parties, dinner parties. He had no brain capacity left other than thinking supply orders, recipes, time schedules. But he wasn't ready to accept that Sam was lost to him. After all, he'd had a backup plan. 2014 Summer Anthology Proof Readers LJH joann414 rec Kitt Thorn Wilde CassieQ
