  1. I'm back! Thank you to Steve and Cia for taking care of the blog while I was gone. What a better way to celebrate being back than by starting a new blog feature called Improve & Encourage. It's similar to a review, in that the person doing the critique tells you what they liked about the story, but it differs in that they also provide constructive criticism. Each author signed up to participate, and sign up's are still open! These will post once a month until we no longer have content. Once that happens, I will critique the last author that posted. If you'd like to provide a critique for the blog, sign up in the thread. I'm hoping to have a lot more authors sign up, and just remember, by signing up, you are also volunteering to have your story critiqued and featured. Sparkle Aditus Critique By: Hudson Bartholomew Please give us a short summary of the story you chose. Sparkle is a 3-part historical vampire anthology, with each part told from the perspective of a different main character. The first tells the story of Zaidu and how he was abandoned by his mother as a child, eventually to become a vampire with a mission. The second is about Adam and his resilience and love of life, despite the hatred and intolerance he's endured. The third focuses on Adam's lover, Oliver, and how his nobility is inspired by the love he and Adam shared. Zaidu, Adam and Oliver come together at the end of part three, which feels more like a beginning than an end, with hints that many great adventures lie ahead. What do you see as the strengths of the story/poem? Aditus packs a lot of world building into each of the three short parts, bringing the reader directly into the action without any drawn out data dumps. The characters' personalities are immediately established, as are their motivations and desires. At the outset, the reader almost expects each part to stand completely independent from the others, but Aditus weaves the stories of the three characters together seamlessly, with each connection feeling natural and logical. By the time you get into the middle of part two, it becomes clear how each character compliments the others, so that by the end of part three, the stage is set for some epic quest (full disclosure: I have no idea if such epic quest exists, but I would certainly like to read it if Aditus writes it!). What do you see as the weaknesses of the story/poem? Much of the story is told in flashback, which was a little confusing until I caught on to what was happening. In parts two and three, Aditus uses italics to indicate a flashback, which helps to differentiate between what is happening now and what is a memory. As each part reads like a short vignette, I often found myself eager for more background or development of certain plot points. For example, Zaidu sounds like he has a long and rich history as a vampire, which is difficult to do justice to in a short vignette; and Zaidu and Adam develop a relationship off-page that I would love to read more about. There are only a few references to the specifics of vampire-hood within this universe (for example, their origin story, the effects of daylight, etc.), which could be expanded upon for more world building; to be fair, though, those details are not central to the story thus far. How do you think the story/poem could be improved? With more installments to the anthology! The first three parts really do feel like a set up for a much longer story, and I feel that there are many nuances to the characters that have been introduced, but not fully explored. I am quite confident that if Aditus chooses to continue writing Sparkle, many of my unanswered questions will be more than adequately addressed in future installments. What was your favorite part? (scene/sentence/etc) I loved the last scene of part three where Zaidu and Adam exchange some brief dialogue loaded with subtext. It hints at a deep relationship they've developed and leaves the reader wanting more. Also, even though he is supposed to be a mighty warhorse, Riah sounds adorable.

  3. Around four pm, mini-cat became restless. She wandered around the house and followed me everywhere. Then around ten, she had her first contractions. The first kitten, a large black and white, was born at 11:15. Sadly Alpha was dead by the time it was finally born. The second (Bravo) came an hour later. It was barely alive and we quickly cut the umbilical cord and rubbed it dry with a towel. For a short time, we thought we would lose it too, but it got stronger when we fed it with dry milk for kitten. Whew! The third, Charlie, and fourth, Delta, came really quick. We had to cut the umbilical cord and rub it dry because mini-cat was busy with giving birth. After Delta mini-cat and her kitten went to sleep in one of three very cozy cardboard boxes and we slept on the couch beside her. You never know... Around three am I woke up because Nox barked in the next room. He was thirsty. When we looked at mommy and the babies, we found a fifth baby, Echo, lying before the box, crying pitifully. Obviously, mini-cat secretly had another one and left it outside because the others started crying. So, once again, cutting the umbilical cord, rubbing it dry and back to mommy. All is well so far, they are drinking and sleeping and mommy only leaves them to eat and drink. So cute. We hope it stays well and nothing more happens. Fingers crossed. I woke up this morning and Echo was really bad. On the way to the vet, but it doesn't look good.
  4. Well, it's come already. Can't believe it! How has spring come had flown so fast? We're already approaching May, but not before we chat about this month's featured short series, Clockwise, by Aditus. Did you read the series? Do you have a favorite story out of the four? I wonder if it matches his favorite? Read on to find out!! Do you eat your fruits and vegetables? I’m vegetarian, so, yes I eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Chocolate or Vanilla? What’s vanilla without chocolate? Both! What's your favorite room in your house? Do you plot or write there? In winter it’s the living room/office. I sometimes space out and stare at the slowly moving reflections of the rock crystals hanging from the curtain rods, and plot. In summer I love to write in a room part house, part garden. What’s something personal about you people might be surprised to know? I own a book with the title Vegan Food Porn. That’s probably not really surprising, though. Maybe I learn and collect swear words in as many different languages I can find is a better answer to the question. What do you like to do when you’re not writing? Reading of course. As we have many great exhibitions here, I also like visiting those, especially photo exhibitions. Then there's gardening, traveling, and slow-walking the dog who is very old by now. What’s the best part of being an author? Having an excuse for having a permanent movie theater in my mind and being able to show the films to others. Clockwise has 4 stories. Which is your favorite? The third story. I looked at so many different houses. In a way, I planned my dream house while I wrote 9:05 PM. Did you start writing the first story intending to do 4 different stories in the series, or did they just evolve that way? I wanted to write four stories for four consecutive anthology themes. I needed a connective element and thought a clockface with its division into four quarters would make sense. The ending… *cries* Did you plan to wrench hearts on purpose from day 1? No! Each story just happened and was inspired by something different. Would you like to share anything about your current or upcoming works with readers? I’m currently writing a story inspired by comicfan’s Bloody Valentine prompt. My editor thought it has the potential to become something longer: a novella or even a novel. I’m also working on a murder mystery story ‘The Puppeteer.’ Don't forget to share your thoughts about the stories below!
  5. April Fools is over so you know this month's feature is no joke... I'm happy to announce you get to read a 4 part series by Aditus, Clockwise! Sweet, sexy, just that bit of spring romance that's starting to float in the air... Clockwise Series by @aditus Length: 12,370 over 4 stories Description: We witness important events that happen to a certain time in Romeo's and Julian's life as we move on clockwise. * A/N: This series features Romeo, a side-character of 'Red Running Shoes'. Each story can be read on its own and you don't have to read the main story. A Reader said: You definitely pulled at my heartstrings with this one, Addy. Excellent antho! ~ Lisa Don't forget to come back ready to share your comments and questions about the series on Monday, April 27th!
  6. Well, you get an extra dose of me this week, since it's a US holiday and I had some time to spare to help out with the blog this morning. Speaking of, thank you to any and every veteran who has ever served to protect the freedom and security of their country! And, without further ado... please enjoy Aditus' review of @comicfan's story, A Vampire to the Rescue! A Vampire to the Rescue Comicfan Reviewer: Aditus Status: Complete Word Count: 3,949 Halloween is over, and all the creepy folk are back behind the veil for one year with the help of fireworks and Jack-o’-lanterns. Except for one vampire. Him we still want around because he is a hero. Terry is out to get some food when he overhears a heated conversation between two men in a darkened street. Just when he is about to turn away, he hears something that reminds him of how cruel humanity can be to a child. How cruel it has been to him. This is why there is no way Terry will allow what is about to happen. While he is still considering what to do the argument turns into a fight, and one of the men kills the other. When the survivor pulls a frightened kid out of the trunk of a car, Terry sees his suspicions confirmed. He can’t wait any longer to intervene. An epic fight enfolds, and Terry finds out he’s battling an old enemy. In the end, Terry is still hungry, but the kid has the perfect idea of how they could change that. The story has some nice twists and surprises I really liked. There might be some parts where I want to know even more, but that’s because I’m greedy. And now I have that damn song in my head: Oh..someone’s in the kitchen with Dinah. 7. It's the Halloween Hunt Short Story Reveal Day on All Hallow's Eve eve! Which story will scare you the most? The rule was for authors to check their comments, then write a story being chased by their story creation. A criminal cyborg, a vengeful spirit... Who did they get? Read the following and find out. Don't forget to share your appreciation via some likes, comments, and reviews!
  8. After finishing the King’s Mate series, I wrote short stories for the anthologies, prompts, and collaborations with Valkyrie and Cole Matthews, mixed with some poetry. A few months ago, however, I thought it is time to start a new book. Those who know me a little are probably aware of my fascination with vampires. They will play a decisive part in the new series. I’m currently writing chapter four. As I am a slow writer due to life and the fact that English is my second language, it takes me roughly a month, at least, to write a chapter if everything goes according to plan. I hope the Catburglar will be the first book in the Professions series. To cut a long story short, I hope I’ll have most of the book written around my GAnniversary in September, and I can post the first chapter then. This time, I won’t post as soon as a chapter is written, because life always happens when you don’t expect it. I think I bored you long enough now. Here is a short excerpt from the first chapter. Winter birthdays suck. Majorly. No pool parties in June. No barbequing with friends in July. No crackling bonfire at the beach in late August, drinking lots of cold beer, singing off-key to ancient metal ballads. I guess my summer-birthday-having brothers had had enough of my annual whining. They invited our closest friends and organized a beach party for me...in February. Which was why, on my twenty-fourth birthday, I was sitting beside the above-mentioned merrily-crackling bonfire, with a scarf around my neck, a hat on my head, trying to open a bag of chips clumsily with gloved hands. And because it was friggin’ cold or because of the many beers I had, I needed to pee very urgently. I got up to find a quiet place to water the seagrass and looked around. “I dare you to whip out that puny dick of yours where I can see it!” My brother’s girlfriend hid her eyes demonstratively behind both her hands. She might have had a little too much of the chardonnay. “You wouldn’t know what to do with this fine example of male beauty and virility,” I gestured at my crotch, bucking my hips suggestively for good measure, "if it hit you smack dab in the face!” Lin pretended to gag. “Ew! Nathan, help!” My brother instantly threw a beer can at me. “As if she’d look at your puny thing when she can have mine.” My so-called friends guffawed and cheered at his blunder. “Your puny thing?” Flipping them all off, I turned my back to the bonfire and switched my phone’s torchlight on to speed-stumble towards the dunes. I really, really needed to piss. Behind one of the beach huts, far enough away from Lin’s delicate eyes, I fumbled for my zipper. With all the bulky winter clothes in the way, I couldn’t reach the pull tab as quickly as I needed. “Fuck that shit!” Shoving my down jacket out of the way, I pulled one glove off with my teeth. A sharp crack from behind made me stop mid-motion, and my back stiffened when a cold shiver ran down my spine. “Lin?” I lifted my phone and searched around. Maybe scanning the place before I got my dick out would be a good idea. Just to avoid literally pissing off an unsuspecting critter with my most vulnerable body part out in the open. Right? Even if I had seen him, I wouldn’t have been quick or strong enough to escape his iron grip or fight him. Increasing pressure on my shoulders made me stagger forward, and then something gripped my chin and sniffed along the right side of my neck. I was either too panicked or too drunk to imagine what creature would do this. Then it struck. The searing pain instantly petrified me. It felt as if acid had been injected directly into my vein and pulsed through my body from the point of impact directly to my brain. All I heard then was greedy gulping; moments later my vision blurred till darkness swept over me. “Konstantin said he left him near the lifeboat.” I sat up groggily, peeling my face off a slimy, wooden surface. Lifeboat. I wiped away some grains of sand and pieces of seaweed and grimaced when too many sensations suddenly bombarded me. Someone nearby was talking too loudly; the pungent stench of rotten fish and wet wood overwhelmed me. I inhaled more cautiously. I stank of rotten fish—and stale beer. My butt felt cold and damp. In the distance, the surf roared deafeningly against the cliffs. When I blinked my eyes open, the horizon was lined with the blue hues of early dawn. Clumsily, I braced myself against something slick and squidgy, trying to stand, but my legs instantly gave out. I felt like shit. Worse than the amount of alcohol I usually drank justified. I never drink hard liquor. My first thought was that the others must have spiked my beer. Sand crunched. A huge, dark figure leaned over me. “I found him!” Before I could react, a dark, thick cloth was thrown over me. I heard a muffled voice. “We have to hurry, Doc; sunrise is close.” They grabbed me, wrapped me up even tighter, and threw me over their shoulder in a fireman carry, as if I weighed nothing, and ran.
  9. Happy September reading! If you aren't already engrossed in a story or series, I have the best recommendation for you. Every so often I love to hit upon my favorite genres, and these stories are right up my alley. Angels, Cupids, and Death. Which are the snarkiest? I'm not gonna tell! You have to read to find out. Ooh... someone's in trouble! Who is it? To read more, or catch up on the gist of things click here
  10. This month's feature story by Aditus was co-authored with Timothy M, and it does require reading of 2 other series of fantasy tales. I had to feature it though because it's just too good not to! Have you read any of them? If not, hopefully this preview make you want to if you haven't already! Length: 32,788 Description: Sablo and Diego are brothers and Guardian Angels. Sablo has found his true love with the Cupid Theliel, but worries about his brother. Especially when he finds out Death is stalking Diego. A reader said: A wonderful collaboration from two great authors who have combined fascinating worlds for this supernatural adventure. It has it all... memorable characters, unexpected twists and turns, romance, and 'devilish' humor. I highly recommend this unique endeavor and cast of characters. Cheers! ~ Headstall If you want to spread the word about Aditus's story, download the graphic below and add it to your signature! Make sure you come back on Wednesday to see the excerpt I chose to share!
  11. A couple of weeks ago someone mentioned the s*** word. And then I heard there fell s*** at some places. I think it's safe now to think of the Ch********* word, especially together with a story. A month from today, I will post the first chapter of my new/ old Ch**story Baby, it's Cold Outside. Sneak peek: I was on the subway, the hood of my jacket still drawn over my head against the nasty weather, mentally going through the list for the big dinner I had planned, when I heard Peter's distinctive laughter. I would have recognized it anywhere, these deep rumbling chortles that always made me feel warm inside. Surprised, I looked back over my shoulder and saw him talking animatedly to a woman I didn't know. It was too early for him to be on this train. Then I smiled. He wanted to surprise me and be home early before he had to go on that business trip tomorrow. I gathered the cloth bags filled with groceries from the floor between my feet, ready to join them, when Peter lifted his hand, stroked the woman's hair, and leaned in for a kiss.
  12. I've started a new story, Lost & Found, which begins a little on the tragic side, but will get better eventually. I can't say much more, as I write as I always do: Without much of a concept. I hope to start posting in the next few weeks, depends on RL and my fickle muse. Tell me what you think? This is the first part of the prologue (and probably not the final version): Morgan St. John had been on the front page of business journals many times. They called him ‘The Biz Wiz’ beside other ridiculous names he wasn’t happy about. If you’d ask him, he would always say all he did was heeding a simple fact most CO’s still ignored, despite countless of lectures he’d held. Every company was different but all of them had one thing in common, they were nothing without their employees. Those people had to believe in success first, and then the stock market would follow. It was a simplified way to describe his methods, but it worked. Boards all over the world came to him to save their tanking businesses, and most of the times he already had lined up the next project or as Danny had called it, his next fix, while he was still wrapping up his last one. Danny knew that against public believe, it wasn’t the money that drove Morgan, but the challenge that got his adrenalin pumping like nothing else. He always supported him, even when Morgan would slip into bed in the early morning hours, too exhausted to do anything but wrapping him into his arms and fall asleep. And this was only when Morgan could commute from their home. Usually, he worked in another city, another country, another part of the world and they didn’t see each other for months, except for their brief talks on Skype in the evening, or when Danny would visit him. Sometimes though, even Morgan St. John couldn’t win, all he could do was sell the company’s profitable parts, and close down the rest. He was after all, still a businessman, who strived to gain profit and had a reputation to uphold. After a particularly gruesome liquidation - in the end he had to dismiss hundreds of people – Morgan had been exhausted physically and mentally, and Danny had all but forced him to finally take some vacation time. They decided to go on a cruise. Morgan loved sail yachts and Danny had found the perfect ship in the ‘Mandarin Queen’. They had been looking forward to scuba diving, visiting charming little coastal villages, and bathing in the sun, but above all, to recharge their together batteries. Three days before their departure, an old friend of Morgan had called with a new project, insisting that only Morgan could come up with a way to save the company. Of course, Morgan accepted. How could he laze around on some boat when the livelihood of people, of families, was at stake? That he could do when he was retired. It had been their first real fight in years. “You need this vacation. We need this vacation, Morgan.” “How can I lie in the sun with no care or concern at all when I’m needed?” “There are others who can do the job. Bernhard just called you first, because you never say no. This time Morgan, I beg you to say no.” “How flattering. I already told him we’re about to go on a cruise and he has to look for someone else, but Bernhard said no one with the necessary experience is available at the moment.” “You’re addicted to success, to adrenalin, to feel invincible. You’re burning the candle on two ends, Morgan. Can’t you see this? And some day soon you have to pay the bill.” “You’re exaggerating. This is an emergency. I can’t leave them hanging and go on a vacation. That would be irresponsible and selfish.” “I will go on this cruise, even if I’d get a refund, which I will not. You need to think about this, Morgan, about us. Although, with how you work, you’ll fall in bed too tired to think. I on the other hand, will have endless time and I will take full advantage of it.” He had watched Danny leave two days later. Leaning against the kitchen counter, his second coffee in hand, he’d expected to have one last argument or at least Daniel slamming the door shut. Only he didn’t. He’d closed it deliberately soft, and somehow, with that, making his point even more. Pulling the suitcase behind him, the duffel bag slung over his shoulder, he’d approached the waiting cab. The driver came out, took Danny’s luggage, and put it in the trunk. Danny got into the car without looking back. The taillights flashed briefly, before they faded with the distance and he was gone. Morgan had persuaded himself that Danny would have a good time once he’d calmed down. He even resolved to make it up to him. This project was important, but after finishing it, he would take some time off. Maybe buy the house Danny always talked about, with a big backyard. Maybe a dog. Morgan’s world disintegrated in the middle of a crucial board meeting, when someone came in, interrupted his speech by handing him his phone with a grave expression. “Sir, the Coast Guard for you. There’s been an accident.” They’d found the ‘Mandarin Queen’ adrift with seven bodies. There had been a shooting. They’d identified the yacht owner, his wife, the crew, and three of the guests. According to the passenger list, two persons were still missing. One of them was Danny. He needed to confirm that Danny boarded the ship.
  13. Aditus, Cole Matthews, and I are proud to announce what has been keeping us so busy over the past couple of months. We have each written eight stories, poems, memories, or personal vignettes--so a total of twenty-four goodies we will share every day starting December first and ending on Christmas Eve. Aditus will post each treat, but the author will be kept secret until the end of each week. We would love to hear our readers' predictions and guesses as to who wrote which story either in a review or in this thread. We will respond to reviews and reveal the correct authors on the Saturday of each week during December. Please feel free to share your own holiday traditions, memories, and experiences here. We would love to have a discussion about any similar experiences our vignettes inspire. We are all very excited to bring you this calendar. We hope it brings as much joy to you as it did to us while we were creating it.
  14. Book 1 The Holly and the Ivy; Book 2 Caesura Landyn paced around the empty space in front of the gate, compulsively pulling at his short ponytail every few steps. Except for a young Asian couple, Simon, and him, the people waiting for passengers from flight AA1034 were long gone. Impatiently he turned to his mate, who tried to get a glimpse through the tinted glass wall dividing the arrival area from the security section behind. "Do you see him yet?" "No," Simon grumbled. "Maybe he missed the plane. Everyone from that damned plane must have gotten out by now, including the pilot, the copilot, and the very last tardy member of his crew. Where is he?" He shoved his hands in the pockets of his black canvas shorts and walked over to his lover. Landyn stared at the blinking lights appearing next to the flight numbers on the information board. "Are you sure this is the right flight? Did you cross-check the dates? You know how he is with numbers sometimes." Simon rolled his eyes. "Of course. I checked the dates as well as the passenger list." "How did you get your hands on the… Never mind, there he is!" Landyn gestured in the direction of the escalators, relief clearly visible on his face. Together they watched Noël carefully lead a petite older Japanese lady towards the security gate; one of her hands firmly rested in the crook of his left arm. With his other hand, he pulled a huge yellow suitcase with a duffle bag piled on top of it behind them. Seeing he also carried an apparently heavy backpack on his shoulders, Landyn murmured, “It looks like he turned into a shopaholic in Japan.” “It’s probably all the cool stuff he couldn’t stop talking about.” The sliding doors opened and Noël squinted, brows wrinkled in concentration, as he looked around. When his gaze fell on his friends, he smiled briefly but then turned to his charge and talked to her quietly while patting her arm. The couple that had been waiting with them rushed over as soon as the doors swished open. Noël talked briefly to them and then took the old lady's fragile hand, which was still holding on to him, and placed it on the young woman's arm. He then gave the handle of the big suitcase over to the man after he lifted the duffle bag from it. They spoke again quietly and the woman bowed several times before she gave Noël two long, narrow, padded bags, which he immediately slung over his shoulder. This time Noël bowed before he finally turned around and sought out his friends, who had been watching all of this curiously from a polite distance. I hope this makes you curious and looking forward to book three. I plan to post the first chapter in January. Thoughts?
  15. Congratulations, Buddy! Drinks, at my bar, are on the house tonight...
