  1. So two of my betas decided to quit simultaneously, which is rather inconvenient and disappointing. Nonetheless: I am seeking a replacement beta for the final chapters of Veil of Shadow. If you have a good grasp of English and the language's intricacies, a mind for detail and the grand plot, and you really 'get' the sort of tale I am telling ... then this might be a role for you. Send me a message if you are interested in doing so. Potential to carryover into the third book also, if interest exists.
  2. Looking for beta readers for a new series I am looking to write. Please contact me if you are intrested in MM coming of age series.
  3. I finally managed to find the list of Editors and Betas, in order to see how many stories I'd edited on GA so far. Congrats to @Kitt for being the busiest editor with 115 stories, btw. My question is whether it's possible to generate a list of the stories I've edited. Mostly for my own interest, because I'm losing track of them, but I can also see a site value. If someone wanted to ask another member to edit or betaread, it might be useful to see what they have edited/betaed before. The list could either pop up on the main editor list https://www.gayauthors.org/stories/browse/editors/ or be a separate page on my profile. Or it could be a choice in the Activity Stream: Stories I've edited / betaed. No big need, but if you ever run out of other ideas for site improvement, it would be cool to have.
  4. Basically I've run into a problem. Due to issues with my health and then not having a computer, the normal people I tap for beta work aren't able to do it anymore. In some cases it is real life has interfered, which I can understand, or they have sort of faded away from GA. Just so people know, I was made aware by a reader of one story left undone. To be honest, it was a 10 chapter story, 5 were up and my beta found a plot hole you could drive a cruise ship through starting in 6. No problem, I could just redo 6 to 10. Then I got sick, computer died and to be completely honest, I forgot it existed. However, now working to create an ending again and will need someone who can be as honest and tell me where I mess up. That brings me to project 2. Working on another limited chapter story called Dragon''s Hoard. I've advertised for a beta and again, no answer. So while my one shots - Anthology and Halloween contest are nearly complete and shouldn't have an issue with beta or editors for them, sort of sunk on the others. Longer projects require a real commitment. I need both a reader/task master to keep me going. While there is no time schedule to keep, I will not post unless the story is complete. I'd also prefer not to spread this out over months. I'm trying to keep both projets between ten to twelve chapters. If anyone is interested, let me know. Thank you.
  5. I'm presently working on two different projects. This is a one shot, approximately 2,000+ words. Wanted - Are you good at seeing the problems? Not afraid to be honest with someone? Got a good red pen and not afraid to use it? Then I have a project for you! The story - Blue, Brownie, and Wedding White This came about because of Cia's little project for the site - Two Nouns. Well after a really short scene people wanted more. I caved and wrote more. I'm sure even with this expansion, it wont be enough, but it all depends on what you as a beta need more of, or less of. Sample - Buzzz! Buzzz! Buzzz! The buzzer for Bradley’s alarm clock pierced the silence, forcing him to push the hair out of his face, then blindly feel for the button to kill the alarm. “Too damn early,” he mumbled as he grabbed his glasses and slid them on. He hurried to the bathroom to pee, wash his face, and brush his teeth. He was on automatic pilot, just going about his normal routine. Bradley stumbled to the kitchen and started brewing a cup of coffee in his Kuerig before pouring himself a bowl of corn flakes. He yawned and scratched his face, waiting for the machine to finally finish brewing his cup. He poured some milk into his coffee and was about to sit down when his doorbell rang. He set the mug on his kitchen table and squinted at the front of the house. “Who could want me at this hour?” Bradley rubbed his eyes and wandered to the front door. He opened it and took a moment for him to realize no one was there. He began to close the door when his sleep addled mind realized something was wrong. Pulling the door wide open, Bradley discovered the roads in front of his house were gone. Instead of the flow of traffic, he presently found a park, or maybe a forest starting at the edge of his yard. He could clearly see the elms, oaks, cherry trees, and more where the three streets should merge in front of his house. The trees were barely lit as the sun rose into the sky. “This has to be a dream.” Bradley shook his head and was about to close the door when he heard a high pitched whistle. Pausing to look around he spotted a small pink and violet ball, barely larger than a golf ball, shot out of the park, hurtled at incredible speed across his yard, and flew right past his ear. “What the hell was that?” Bradley turned quickly and looked into his hallway. He found the ball sliding around on his hardwood floor, going from the hall into his open living room, finally coming to a halt under his glass coffee table. As he watched in amazement, the ball slowly seemed to split open like an egg and a fully formed man stood up. The man stood all of a six inches high, was a deep indigo color, and totally nude. “I really need to wake up,” Bradley muttered as he rubbed his eyes and then slapped his own cheek. “Funny way to greet a guest,” came a deep rich voice from the figure on the floor. He stood with his arms crossed watching every move Bradley made. “Guest?” Bradley squeaked as he took a sudden step back, hit his front door, knocking it closed. Click. There was a flash of light and then silence as Bradley heard the door close behind him. “Finally,” came the same rich voice as the figure walked toward Bradley, growing rapidly to over six feet. “I was beginning to wonder if you were ever going to close that door. Did you grow up in a barn or something?” So if this appeals to you feel free to contact me. Thank you, Wayne aka comicfan
  6. I'm presently working on two vastly different projects but I'm going to list both here in hopes of finding a brave soul to read and rip things apart before I go begging for an editor to fix everything again once the beta and I have finished. This is for the longer project. Project 1 - Dragon's Hoard Presently two complete chapters of an on going project. Needed - Someone willing to give honest opinions and feed back. I'm not perfect or a prima donna. Being told that the story is wonderful is always nice, but not looking to have my ego stroked. Need someone not afraid to grab their red pen and tell me where I have too much detail or not enough. Am I getting my point across or as a reader are you lost? My writing usually involves fantasy and relationships. If this doesn't interest you feel free to skip this request. Because this isn't finished yet I can't say how long the story will be. Most of my stories go between six to twelve chapters, so if you agree just be aware of the full project. Don't be afraid to keep on me for more, this will not go to the editor or be put on site until complete. Sample - Seth strode nervously back and forth before the large fireplace. Something was bothering him and he couldn’t figure out what it was. He paused before a large window, staring out into the dark night, watching the snow swirl as it fell past him. The trees waved their skeletal limbs in the wind that was blowing. “I don’t know what is wrong, but I intend to find out,” he whispered to himself. Grabbing his jacket from the chair, Seth nearly flew across the room, slipping it on as he headed out into the hallway. He found himself nearly running down the hall, but as he reached the stairway he stopped and looked around. “Come out, Daniel. I know you are there. A shadow seemed to move from the hallway and suddenly a tall thin man in a dark suit stood before Seth. “You called for me, Sir.” Daniel stood at perfect attention, appearing as though this late night mission was a common occurrence. Seth shook his head. “Something is wrong, Daniel. I’m not sure what it is. Have the men check the property immediately!” “Yes, Sir. Right away, Sir!” Seth watched as Daniel nearly flew down the staircase and vanished from view. As he made his way down the stairs he sense that something was wrong only increased. He took a deep breath, and removed his coat. He crossed over to the lounge, opening the door wide, and turned on all the lights in the room. He tossed his coat on the nearest chair and looked around the room. Then, to keep himself occupied, he worked on lighting the fire in the fireplace. “Who left all the lights on? I’ll have … oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t see you there, Angel.” Seth looked up to find Valerie standing in the doorway. Her raven tresses now shot through with silver, did little to mar her beauty. She stood straight as a tree, but her figure was still that of young maid. Her smile gave no trace of her age, but she had been his nursemaid, teacher, and was one of the few people that Seth could count on growing up. If this interests you feel free to contact me. Thank you. Wayne aka comicfan
  7. Looking for someone here on GA to help Beta Read stories for me, on an ongoing basis. These will be all new stories written for my Guardian Force Saga, and a Love Story that is in the works. Minor editing, but mainly need someone to tell me, how it reads, and if I messed anything up. Thanks! My Author Stories listing: https://www.gayauthors.org/author/bhopper2/
  8. Im looking for a Beta reader for my newest story. Its a high school romance. The story is completed, 16 chapters 8-12 pages each (although im thinking of splitting them up differntly). Looking to post first chapter asap and about a week inbetween each next one. Mostly I'm looking for plot holes or incansistancies. Things that feel unbelievable. I prefer using google docs with a share link but if need be other arrangements can be made If we work well together i have more in the works and will probably be able to keep you busy if wanted. SAMPLE: Antonio Mancini stepped off the bus and adjusted his bag. He took a deep breath and looked up at the large brick building in front of him. It was the fifth school in three years, and yet he felt like he'd been here a hundred times. It was always the same story, ending with his expulsion and the disappointment on his Mother's face. He remembered her pleading look when he left this morning, "Just try to fit in this time Toni. Promise me, you're going to try. No fights." "It's not my fault..." "I know, it’s never your fault. Just try Antonio, we're running out of options." "Okay Mama, I'll try." "That's all I ask Bambino." He had spent all summer taking classes to catch up, the many expulsions had caused him to fall behind. His first day at Mc Greggor High coincided with the beginning of his Junior year. At first, he had been a little excited about this new chance. A chance to make friends and reinvent his reputation. But looking around at the flashy cars and preppy clothes, he began to rethink that idea. It seemed like it was going to be another year of just getting by. If he managed to last that long.
  9. I'm looking for a proof/beta reader that's familiar with my story "The Field of Love". I'm back to writing and I just need some to look over the chapters to make sure everything is in sic with the previous chapters and if I could word things a little better for everyone's understanding. Hit me up if you're interested. Billy
  10. Looking for a beta and/or editor for a summer anthology piece, which is due on 26 May 2016. It covers a gay man who makes a game out of dating straight men or convincing them to one-night stands, but one of them ends up being more open to a homosexual relationship and pursues him. They are, coincidentally, working for the same office in the same building. The new guy pursues the player. So yes, I need help writing this and would appreciate suggestions on how to go about it and judge what I have right now. Like many artists, I have a good idea and don't know how to press it further. Also, I want to bring out my characters' personalities more. For editing, I feel working with a Google docs file would be as much a possibility as passing an attachment back and forth would. The former might be more ideal. Comments are more ideal but in-line edits are welcome. Snippet:
  11. Hi All, Usually I am all about sharing and letting people read what I am in the middle of to see if they want to help. No can do on this one. I've written a piece for the Secret Admirer Contest and am looking for help in a beta and possible editor. For those who have worked with me you know me. I am easy to get along with. I want help to make sure this is as easy to read and makes sense. If you say expand, I expand, You need less, I cut, and if you need explanations, I will do my best to explain whatever it is. Because this is a contest I can't go into detail about what the story is. I do follow the theme and therefore you know it is a romance story. Beyond that, my lips are sealed. If you decide to work with me, it means you are silent on the details as well. The story presently stands at just over nine pages, is written in word. I prefer comments and corrections. I was a teacher so the red pen means nothing to me, feel free to comment. Thanks in advance. Wayne
  12. I am working on a science fiction/romance story involving a marine shifter (merman). It is currently about 20K words and is maybe half done. I was looking for someone who has beta'd before who could let me know how it flows, as well as hopefully point out typos/errors. I have worked with editors/betas before, and I prefer to use Word 'track changes' where you can mark line edits as well as 'comments' where you can add notes/questions/etc. As long as your suggestions/edits/remarks are highlighted in some way, that would be fine. I often will send several chapters at once so that you can work on them as you have time. I would like to have a turnaround of a week or less if possible. It would probably be another couple weeks at least before I'd have the rest of the story done (hoping for the end of March, but might not make that) There is a preview of the story on one of my blogs here: https://www.gayauthors.org/forums/blog/591/entry-15251-so-whats-next/ It is part of the prologue. Thanks for looking. Let me know if you are interested.
  13. I would prefer to develop a long term working relationsip with and editor and a beta as I have several projects, but if not I still need two works that need to be looked over right now. 1. short story for a writing event. About 6K right now may go up to around 10 k Must be turned into organizers by May 1st so I need feed back before then 2. Contemporary novella 36k words. Not so strict a deadline, but would like to head to publishing within the next couple months. I'd like both read for plot, connections of characters, typos, grammar, and advice on the stories. both are complete or in last revisions. Microsoft word compatible, Track changes turned on for line edits and/or comment bubbles accepted. Story example: Rob just nodded until he realized that he was still on the phone and Steve couldn’t see the gesture. “Okay, but I’m not going to talk about Adam and Chris tonight to the media. I need to figure some things out before I show up.” Despite his personal insecurities, Rob knew his appearance at this event was important for his professional image and he needed to make sure Adam didn’t throw him under the bus. He figured that if Adam could change his plus one, then so could Rob. Now all he needed to do was to find a new date. Rob finished the call and turned to his driver. Marc’s Native American heritage—from his mother’s side— shone brightly. He would look striking at Rob’s side. His shimmering, long, black hair, dark-brown eyes, and darker skin tone would complement Rob’s shorter black hair and lighter olive skin. Rob knew that Marc wouldn’t be offended if Rob asked him on a date, but he also knew that it was finals week. Marc would probably have to go home and study. On the off chance that he would know someone who was free for the evening, Rob said, “Apparently I need to find a new date for this evening. My boyfriend went behind my back, and is bringing someone else. You wouldn’t happen to know anyone who would like to go see a movie and pretend to date a movie star for a day?” Marc’s face brightened. “I just happen to be free for the evening. I’ve finished my last final this morning. I’ve always wanted to go to a premiere.” Then his face dropped. “Jason won’t be too happy about it though.” “You’re still seeing him? I thought you guys broke up a couple weeks back.” “He did, but then he came back and wants to try working things out. Let me call and run it by him first.” “Thanks Marc, I appreciate it.” Marc drove him home where they met up with Rob’s agent. Steve arranged for a car and a suit for Marc. Soon they were on their way to the theater. He closed his eyes and flopped his head against the back of the seat. Rob tried to calm his mind and think happy thoughts, but it didn’t seem to help. He was exhausted and overwhelmed by the events of the day.
  14. I'm looking for someone to look over three chapters (7500+ words) and let me know (1) if the story is worth reading (2) for grammar (3) if you might be interested in either being my beta reader or editor for this story. I don't intend to post any of the story until the story is completed, beta read, and edited, so there's no reason at all for the story not to post once a week. Please either let me know here or private message me. Thanks Billy
  15. Folks, this post was written by Lugh some years ago and still stands. It's a pinned post, but I'm posting it again. There are two ways to find an Editor and/or Beta here at GayAuthors.org. One thing I would like to remind everyone before you start: By entering a working relationship with another member you agree not to divulge any personal information about anyone you are working with as an author / beta reader / editor as explained in the rules and this agreement is binding even if you choose leave the relationship. Option 1: Contact Cia or LJH and request one. You will need to include the same info as below in your PM to them and the will facilitate matching you to an editor and/or beta that suits your needs. Option 2: Post an ad in the Editor's Corner Subforum: Writing Support Requests Due to the sheer number of posts this forum receives the following policy has been adapted: Posts will now have formatting similar to a personal ad with authors advertising their story. Threads that do not follow this format will be deleted without notice. Ads will run for one month then be moved to the archive. If a match is made, PM Cia or Lugh, so the thread can be closed. In the TOPIC TITLE put the following information: ISO: Editor (Beta/Editor & Beta) – Genre (choose ONE) – Length of fiction (word count if you have it) (long/short/novel/novella/poetry etc if you do not) Commitment (One Time/Long Term) – Urgency (if you MUST have this done by a particular date / for a specific event such as the anthology or to meet a posting schedule) TAGS: ISO: BETA, ISO: Editor (separated by commas) helps people look you up if they are tag searching. In the BODY, put the following information: When do you want it by? What are your turn around expectations? (if this isn’t above) Have you worked with an Editor / Beta before? What do you need? Such as… Do you need line edits? Plot help? Someone to read your story and tell you what is wrong? What do you expect? Such as… Someone to fix your spelling, grammar? General advice? Someone to tell you how to write your story? Someone to write your story? How much do you have done? Where are you in the writing process? What software do you / can you use? Do you prefer comments or inline edits or do you not have a preference? And finally – a snippet of your story (except for poetry – put style) of at least 200 words but not more than 500 words. Please understand, we have a handful of active editors, some may be working on projects, others might have opted out of the program, please be patient when seeking an editor. Also, any new applicants to the editing program will need to fill in a questionnaire which I have. Once you express your interest in the program, I will send you the form to fill in. Thank you LJH
  16. Hey Guys and gals I have been wanting to write a story about a man who is ex-gay (yeah I know, went there myself, and there is no such thing) in a Charismatic Christian church. I come from that background myself and went through the whole thing. Much of what I would write about I actually experienced but It's no autobiographical. It is steeped in christian terminology and so may be a turn-off for some, but because my own life is still solidly based in at least a stream of Christianity, I wanted it to be real because I believe there are many, many people who would love to express their relationship with a Christian God in a positive light, that need to see that it is possible. First of all, is there anybody who wants to comment on that? I realize that to some it may be completely incomprehensible ... but here goes Secondly, here is about half of the first chapter. It's called Rivers of Living Water * * * The young blonde twenty-something-year-old man stood in front me with his head bowed. His eyes were closed and the lids fluttered, the glistening drops of his tears framing his long, black lashes in liquid crystal. A slight flush painted his cheeks and a frown came and went as unnamed emotions coursed through his chest as the Holy Spirit touched him deeply. The gentle keyboard music in the background, with the worship leader gently singing "Come, Lord Jesus, come," provided the emotional cushion for his obvious distress. My voice murmured as I spoke in tongues, paused, gently feeling inside myself for the words the Christ was whispering to the distraught man. “I sense you may be feeling shame, a deep sense of shame, and Jesus wants you to know that there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8.1) I was watching the expressions cross his attractive face and the muscular arms hands that he held out before him were shaking slightly as he responded to the accuracy of my discernment. I absently noted the glistening golden hairs on his forearms that stuck out of the rolled up sleeves of his shirt. The tears that had previously only rimmed his lashes brimmed over and started to trickle down his cheeks, trailing silvery paths of heartache and desperation. I ignored the discomfort in my pants as I laid my hand on the back of his neck, feeling that the Father wanted him to know how deeply he was loved; wanted so secure him as His son. I spoke those words to this prodigal. “The Father says to you: ‘My son, I see you exactly as you are, and I love you. I have made you, and you are my passion, my desire. Receive my love…! See, I wait with my arms wide open if you wish to return to me.’” His body started to shake as the import of the words began to take effect. As is often the case when I minister to young men, a deep sense of fatherlessness often characterized their condition in a society where men were not taught how to secure their sons, their own fathers normally being sadly lacking in that department. His short, bristly hair rubbed against my palm that was resting on his muscular young neck, and once again I was dimply aware of the erection in my pants. This often happened to me when I prayed for young guys, as I had explained to my pastors, who knew that I had been in the gay lifestyle before. But that was behind me, a legacy of a different era, and as I stilled my mind to discern the voice of Jesus for this young guy, I though I felt that he needed a hug. “Do you mind of I hug you?” I asked, and he shook his head and leaned into me, his head on my chest, his arms between us as pulled him to myself, my left arm around his broad young back and my right hand still on the back of his head, I whispered into his ears. “Jesus says: ‘My blood washes you clean of all sin, cleanses you of all shame. What was crimson will be wool; what was scarlet will be snow.’” (Isaiah 1.18) His body started to shake with sobs and as I put my cheek against his head his short blonde hair smelled of hair gel, but I ignored the pleasant fragrance and carried on ministering God’s love to him. I stood with my pelvis well clear of him as my body betrayed my calling, since I was determined not to dignify it with my attention in such a Holy Moment such as this. Just then a young woman called Irene, also in the ministry team, came up to us and joined in the ministry. She leaned in to my ear and said that the pastor, John, wanted me to come and pray with him for another young woman who was manifesting a demon. I reluctantly released the young man in my arms with a “bless you man, God love you so much,” and left him in the capable hands of Irene. * * * Later, when the service was over and everybody was having coffee, I was approached by the young guy I had prayed for. He had a mug in his one hand and a rusk in the other and he sheepishly smiled at me. His eyes were still red and he looked adorable. My heart melted for him, as I instinctively knew that he was deeply troubled. “HI there, my name is Danny, you prayed for me earlier.” As if I could already have forgotten the delicious joy of holding him to my heart and sharing God’s love with him. I shook his hand. He had a firm grip and I was tempted to hold on to it for a while but was content to feel the warm masculine contact transmitted through the brief touch. He was about 5ft 7 and quite muscular. Now that his eyes were open I could see that unexpectedly for a blonde, they were a startling amber colour. He had dense black eyebrows, which framed his beautiful eyes, which still looked at me with deference. I was pastor after all, and at least ten years his senior. “Yes, I remember. I’m Doug. How are you feeling? Did anything I prayed for you make sense to you?” He ducked his head and nodded silently. I could see that his heart was still quite tender, and I knew that when the Lord touched somebody, especially when he poured his love into them, they often struggled to come down from it straight away. “It’s ok Danny. Whatever it is, God knows, and like He told you, He loves you anyway.” When he looked up again, his lashes were rimmed with tears again. “I’m sorry man, I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’m not usually such a baby.” He gave an embarrassed chuckle as he looked around for somewhere to put his mug and rusk down. I helped out by taking them from him so he could reach for his hanky. As he wiped his eyes and blew his nose, I waited patiently, taking in the vision of this attractive young man before me. In a different setting he would look like a cocky, hunky young buck with the world, and no doubt a whole bunch of girls at his feet. But here he had the liberty to be a vulnerable young guy with his issues and problems, with no obligation to put on a front. That was one of the reasons I loved being on the pastoral team of our church. We could extend unconditional love to those that were the debris of the world that would, if it could, spit them out after chewing them up. “Thanks,” he said as he retrieved his mug and rusk from me. “The thing about the shame and stuff was just so spot on…” he said, trying to look me in the eye and not quite succeeding. “It’s ok Danny, most of us have stuff that we feel ashamed about. That’s one of the reasons that Jesus died, so the Enemy wouldn’t have anything on us anymore. When he died, and you received Him as your Saviour, old Slufoot lost all his power of accusation against you.” The familiar words tumbled out of my mouth, and I could see that they were having the desired effect. “Yeah, I suppose you’re right. It’s just that I can’t help it. You prayed for me, all right, and I feel batter, forgiven and so on, but then, just when I least expect it, the feelings are right there again…” His face flushed dark red as he blushed with shame, realizing that he may have said too much and given away his secret. I knew that it could only be one of a few: masturbation, lust or sex before marriage, and in the occasional case, unwanted same-sex attractions. I had seen it all and knew how to put his mind at ease. “Listen to me Danny, you aren’t your sin. The voice that you hear that telling you’re worthless sinner isn’t God’s voice. Listen to what he told you when I was praying for you, and remember that feeling of freedom and safety. That’s the Truth. Nothing else matters!” I put my hand on his shoulder and my eyes looked into his. “And when things get too hard for you to bear by yourself, he has give us brothers and sisters to help bear the load. Remember that. James 5.16 says that if we confess our sins to another and pray for one another, he wil be faithful to heal us. Nothing is to bad for God to understand and heal.” He swallowed deeply, his eyes still held by mine and I again felt that familiar discomfort in my jeans. He turned around as a woman who was on tea duty relieved him of his empty cup and half-eaten rusk, and when she walked away, he literally flung himself into my arms. “I’m just so scared that I’m going to be like this for the rest of my life! What if God doesn’t take these bad feelings away?” It took all my willpower to release the sweet young guy from my arms and with a hand on each of his shoulders, I once again looked him in the eye. “Danny, do you want to make an appointment with one of the pastors to discuss what’s troubling you? I mean it, you don’t have to go through this alone.” “Are you willing to see me? I feel like I can trust you.” “Sure Danny. Call the admin office tomorrow and they’ll set something up. I’d be glad to help." “Thanks so much!” His eyes shone as turned. He looked over his shoulder. “I’ll definitely call.” I was looking forward to it. A lot. ********* PS. I've not edited it at all so there are errors. I will do that later Ben H
  17. On behalf of the Editing Team, I'd like to introduce, and welcome our newest Beta Reader vick99 I'm sure Vick will make a valuable contribution to the Beta team. Vick is a writer too, so he understands the value a beta brings to the story. He likes drama, romance, thrillers and teenagers coming out stories. He'll accept 1st and 2nd drafts. He understands the word Beta to mean reading a written work in progress, before the story is released, that Beta readers must look over the story and give any suggestions to improve the story itself. Both character and plot play a big role in developing a story. If the author focuses more on the plot, the story will be flat and the characters will be ‘locked in’ and fail to excite the author or reader, basically the characters will not ‘come to life’. If the author focuses more on the characters than the plot, the character will never realize his/her potential because the plot is too slight. The stakes aren’t high enough, the outcome predictable and the storyline is worn. Having a clear balance between the two will alternate each other and a more exhilarating storyline will progress, making it ‘a want to read’ story. Welcome to the team, Vick Happy Beta Reading.
  18. I've been with GA for a few years now. When I first joined I would have killed to have immediately found a good beta and editor. Over time, for most things I found myself settling down and working with the same two or three incredible people over and over again. It was comfortable, and I knew I could rely on their honest opinions of my work. Flash forward to recently. While there are some damn fine editors working on site the Betas seem to have vanished. What is a Beta? Glad you asked. A beta reader is not an editor. A beta reader is just that, a second reader of a story. They look for things that an author missed or screwed up. I'm not talking spelling or punctuation primarily. A beta is the one who catches when an author changes a character's name by mistake, hasn't given the reader enough information to follow a part of a story, or will point out where an author might have gone over board with the details and is bogging his or her story down making a reader lose interest in what was happening. They help you fill in when you are lacking and cut when you went overboard. They help by asking questions while they read over the work. What did you mean here, because I didn't understand? Where did character A go, because you never mentioned them again? Would love to know what Character B does for a living. You told us a few times he goes to work but as what? Be aware you started this story from Kelly's pov but for the last chapter you switched to Dan's pov and it is the only time you have done that in twenty two chapters. Yes, a beta reader looks for the mistakes, points out where you did well, and helps an author to craft a story worthy of putting before a reader. A good beta is worth their weight in gold. Why am I explaining all this? I will be honest. I am a selfish son of a bitch who has gone looking for a beta since my usual betas have personal issues and are/continue to be unavailable. Therefore I went to the site's Gay Author's Writing Community and asked for a beta. Unfortunately, a once rich source seems to have dried up. Do you enjoy reading? Can you be honest without being offensive? Can you work well with temperamental people? Then go talk to Louis and Jo Ann. There are authors who could use your assistance. Thank you
  19. Hi all. I just wanted to say thankyou to all our new beta readers and editors who have stepped up to help our writers. I also want to highlight that being an editor/beta on GA has one simple aim, that is to assist writers to better their work. The title of editor is a free purchase from the store, and it does not mean that once purchased, one may sit back. If one has chosen to be an editor, i emplore you to step forward and volunteer to assist. Please Don't be a ghost. Our writers should be working with a team, and if there is no editor/ beta to assist, then the writer's chance of promotion is severely compromised in the long run. Please don't be a ghost editor. Step up. At the moment JL is seeking an editor/beta. Any volunteers?
  20. Hi Members, The GA Beta/Editing process is vital. So important that many a writer simply would not be able to continue a story without our help. They say a writer writes, and an editor edits, that is true to an extent. However, I know of some writers who are able to edit, and some editors who are able to write. Of-course there might be members who disagree completely, but then that's all a matter of subjective belief, or, as some might say; opinion. Personally, I feel that if you are good at catching common grammatical and usage errors in a story, then you are the person we seek to assist us in our program. But we're not only looking for editors, we would dearly love to meet proof-readers. Many stories require a proof-read to iron out typo's and spelling errors. We won't put you through a test, the proof, as they say, is in the pudding; as long as you make your writer happy, then we're happy. Simply put - we need more. Why? Well, it's GA's Beta/Editor program, amongst many others, that sets GA apart from similar sites. The Beta/Editor program has stagnated far too long. Having said that, I would like to echo sat8997's request (one which she posted 18 months ago): If you are part of this program, would you be so kind as to drop me a PM letting me know which authors you are currently helping and in what capacity, along with whether or not you are available for any assignments. Your preferred genres would be helpful too. Also If you are not part of this program, but are interested in volunteering some time and experience feel free to PM me... We're looking for people who want to help. How do you become an editor? You can buy the title (for free), from the store. Then PM me or Joann414 and we'll add you to the list. When you have done this, you may answer an ad found in the Writing Request Subforum of the Editor’s Corner. Once you have responded to the ad, please inform me or Joann414 that you are "booked", so to speak. Tell us the name of the author, and the project title. This will help us collate who is and is not available to edit/proofread/beta. Since March 2013, the following writers have requested assistance: Authors, please PM me or Joann414 if your request was, or was not, successful. Ryan Jacobs - seeking Beta/Editor - for details see post dated 02 Mar 2013 and 11 Feb 2013 JMH - seeking Beta/Editor - for details see post dated 15 March 2013 Johnathan Colourfield - seeking Beta/Editor - for details see post dated 06 April 2013 Vaniley - seeking editor - for details see post dated 05 April 2013 Rosenkrantz - seeking Beta - for details see post dated 19 April 2013 scotty94 - seeking Beta - for details see post dated 19 April 2013 Billy Brat - seeking Editor - for details see post dated 30 April 2013 comicfan - seeking Beta - for details see post dated 15 May 2013 W_L - seeking Beta/Editor - for details see post dated 17 May 2013 scotty94 - seeking Editor - for details see post dated 24 May 2013 Thorne Wilde - seeking Editor - for details see post dated 28 May 2013 I ask for your assistance in helping out our new and established writers, and if you can, it will be greatly appreciated. You can PM me: LJH or Joann414 Look out for some exciting Beta/Editor announcements and fun in the next couple of weeks. Also, if you have any fun ideas for the program, please let us know. Hugs all
