  1. How's your 2019 shaping up? I can't believe the first month has already passed, and here we are at the first CSR Discussion day! Who checked out this month's fanfiction story by @Laura S. Fox that was featured? I heard the word... "hot". What do you think? Make sure you share your thoughts in the comments below along with any questions you might have, but first, mine always come first! Here's the interview I sent Laura with all the in-depth, probing questions I'm known for! Have you ever gone out in public, realized your shirt is on backwards, and just don’t care? I wish I had that level of ‘I don’t give a damn’. Unfortunately, I’m quite self-conscious once I realize that something is wrong with my clothes. It’s best that I don’t realize if that happens. What’s something personal about you people might be surprised to know? Maybe that I’m – almost – 5.2? I hope my writing gives people the impression that I’m taller, lol. Also, that I actually had IT as my specialization in high school. Don’t ask, my family thought I could be a mathematician. I got decent grades in math, and it felt like victory whenever I solved some tough equation. But I loathed all those times when I couldn’t. Did you like to write in school? I didn’t write anything close to something that could be called a story until 25-26, except for compositions that were school assignments. Although I’ve always loved stories and books, and I got good grades in literature classes, it just didn’t cross my mind I could write. I was imagining stuff in my head, sometimes very long and winded, but I wasn’t putting anything on paper. Long story short, my husband made me do it. Do you have any favorite quotes from a famous author? When I was younger, I loved those quotes that expressed some kind of cosmic truth. But then I grew up a little and realized cosmic truths don’t really matter that much. So I happen to find quotes that are more specific or focus on details that refer only to an individual or a specific situation or an era to be much more interesting. Samples at hand: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” (Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice) “What he loved in horses was what he loved in men, the blood and the heat of the blood that ran them. All his reverence and all his fondness and all the leanings of his life were for the ardenthearted and they would always be so and never be otherwise.” (Cormac McCarthy - All the Pretty Horses) What’s the best part of being an author? For me, it’s the freedom of imagining anything you want. You can create something that didn’t exist before, and that feels liberating. To some people, writers – and other creators – may look a bit like lunatics in that sense of ‘what are you doing all cooped up inside all day long? You’re not living your life’ kind of thing. But I believe it to be a sort of escapism that’s hardly equaled by anything else. What do you think makes up a good book? It must be the capability to make you suspend all your beliefs and delve in without one look back. If an author manages to help you escape reality while you’re reading their work, the topic doesn’t even matter that much. What’s the key to that specific ability, I’m still trying to find out. How did you get interested in manhua? If I were to talk about 19 Days in particular, it happened because it kept popping on my Tumblr feed. But, in general, manhua, manga, and manhwa – which are just Chinese, Japanese and Korean terms for comics – came into my life via Boys’ Love stories, and yaoi. First, I watched some yaoi anime, simply by accident, then I progressed to reading comics, and I also got into slash at the same time, and it all sort of rolled down from there, just because of the love for the love of boys. I just found the stories coming from Asian creators to be funny, interesting, even intense and dramatic, compared to anything else I had ever read before. Fanfiction isn’t posted often on GA. What’s the biggest difference to writing fanfiction versus original fiction for you? I think it must be the fact that it is somewhat easier to write fanfiction. You have all the characters, their motivations, even settings, already made. You’re practically playing in someone else’s sandbox. When you write original fiction, however, you need to be careful not to slip, and make your own characters sound OOC. Keeping things consistent is a real challenge for original fiction. Do you have a favorite scene in Nude Pics Please? If you had to sum up the story in one sentence, what would it be? It all started with a naughty pic.
  2. I've just updated my reference guide to Anne McCaffrey's Pern with a timeline of the Eighth Pass, Eighth Interval and Ninth Pass, showing where my stories fit in along the way. If you have any questions about my stories, or Pern in general, ask away and I'll try to answer as best I can!
  3. One question I've gotten a lot in the past is "Why FanFiction?" The answer is pretty easy though. It is a great place to practice aspects of writing that has an active, large audience that is frequently vocal. FanFiction has 775,000 Harry Potter stories. 59,600 of those are Harry/Draco tagged stories. The vast majority of those would be "slash", the FanFic term for gay stories. Gay Authors has a total of 4,259 as of this post. Is your mind blown? Mine is. "But FanFiction isn't really writing"... bullshit. Professional authors do it all the time. They call them Anthologies. Writing in other people's worlds and selling the collection. Some take it to extremes... 50 Shades of Gray started famously as a Twilight FanFiction story. (I'd like to have the millions of dollars she raked in there. lol) Mercedes Lackey, one of Fantasy's most prolific authors these days, started off writing anthology stories in Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover world. Mercedes is famous for one of the first really mainstream gay characters... I specifically started writing Harry Potter FanFiction because I loved the characters and the world and I wanted to experiment. It's been fun. I still read a fair bit of FanFiction, as a way to unwind. I'm familiar with the character and I read to see what other people try with them. I've read a LOT of stories that blow canon straight out of the water. Gay and Straight. Harry Crow is a Harry/Hermoine Story that is over 750,000 words. The author is an old teacher. Very talented. Takes what you know and totally dumps it over. (the premise on this one is What if Vernon took baby Harry straight to the bank and dropped him off and he was raised by Goblins) Anyway... my point being here... if you have some writing experiment you want to try... FanFiction might be a great place to give it a whirl. We also have some great FanFiction stories on site. dkstories has some in Valdemar, Harry Potter and Dragonriders of Pern. And plenty of others have stories too. I know I've pulled FanFiction readers into my original fiction because they've liked my writing. What do you think? Have you read FanFictions before? Written some?
  4. I am in search of an editor and/or beta. I write mostly werewolves/vampires and some fanfiction of Harry Potter. Is there anyone who is interested?
  5. I've been sorely tempted to write a FanFic for Star Wars set in the Legends Era of Star Wars: The Old Republic. I started one based on Star Trek Online but stopped after Cryptic started sending C&D Letters to people using their IP for FanFics. Which is surprising, with the number of Role-Playing guilds that are on the PC version of STO, and the fact they have a Fully Kitted Starbase, and all the other Fleet holdings dedicated to Role-Play. And they write FanFics all the time. I know Disney, is a bit more forgiving when it comes to FanFic.
  6. I despise the whole OmegaVerse thing. Every single time I'm browsing a ship I like, like 50% of what I find has this Alpha/Beta/Omega AU going on, and I just don't get the appeal. It's super annoying. Context: OmegaVerse is a fan fiction trope where people are born as either alphas, betas, or omegas. Alphas are high status, betas are subservient, and omegas are basically sex slaves most of the time. There's this whole wolf thing going on where they basically scent mark each other and use pheromones to attract one another and there are like heat cycles, and it's just a mess of mixed lore, most of which makes no sense. Oh, and in many of these stories, omega boys can be impregnated via anal sex. Which is my second most hated trope: male pregnancy. Especially when it's for absolutely no reason whatsoever. So, which trope can you not stand?
  7. A Long Time Ago In A Movie Theater Far Far Away . . . I was introduced to Star Wars for the first time. I was seven years old, the perfect age for George Lucas’ masterpiece. It was like he’d written it just for me. Even at that tender age I was already a Sci-Fi nut. My favorite shows at the time were Lost In Space reruns, Space 1999 (a story that could really do with its own motion picture), Dr. Who, and, of course, Star Trek: TOS. I was too young to understand a lot of stuff going on, but I loved the action and I loved the adventure and ESPECIALLY the special effects! Space 1999, for instance, was WAY ahead of its time! If you’ve never seen this TV Series I really encourage you to check it out. The stories, sets, and effects were what George Lucas’ crew founded some of their ideas on along with 2001: A Space Odyssey. The scene below, seen by me in 70 MM film on a huge concave Cinemascope screen the width of half a football field with the new Dolby Stereo sound system in the single auditorium theater (these are rare and probably don’t exist anymore), was life changing! None of us had every seen anything like this before in 1977! I was literally ducking in my seat as the ISS Devastator flew over chasing Princess Leia’s Tantive IV Corellian Blockade Runner. It was with Star Wars that I was introduced to the concept of the Force for the first time and who the Jedi were and how one had fallen to the ‘Dark Side of the Force.’ An awesome and fearful being, Darth Vader, came out of the smoke and, although I was already stunned by the Star Destroyer scene, I was suddenly in LOVE with its terrible commander! I would have been happy to have been his beaten up Apprentice if he had found me worthy. Galen Merrick wouldn’t have even had a chance! When it came to the lightsaber duel, though, I got a little bored. Even Obi-Wan getting ‘Force Ghosted’ was just a little shocking. I enjoyed the lightsabers, but the scene did not match the excitement of Luke, Han, Chewy, and Leia trying to make their escape. The aggrieved final meeting of Master and Padawan couldn’t have the impact it should have had later when we learned the full tragic story of Anakin Skywalker and his strained relationship with his Jedi Master teacher, Obi-Wan Kenobi. But, the history aside, the scene itself fell a bit flat because the effects weren’t there. Trying to pull off a rotoscoped laser sword battle with two GLASS reflective tubes was not easy and both actors and stunt doubles doing the fight had to actually be careful not to break the lightsabers! So, the fight was gently done, but effective enough for the story. Washed out colors were so the rotoscoping could work. So, why am I giving you all this build up and history? Well one reason, of course, is that I am so much a GIGANTIC Star Wars nerd that I actually am a knighted Sith Lord with my own ‘Darth’ name and have been one for many years. I can be referred to as Darth Umbrus if you are found trustworthy enough to address me by my secret name. I have a robe and i’m working on an upgraded lightsaber I intend to build at Star Wars Galaxy Edge at the end of this month when it opens. My knowledge of Star Wars lore is encyclopaedic and I have written a couple of unreleased Star Wars Fan Fics that I may put here one day when I’m done with my many other original projects I’m doing. I was thinking, at one time, of submitting one of them to Lucasbooks for publishing, but thought better of it. So, when I say something Star Was is good, I mean it! The other reason is simple: the fight scene above has been redone by a team of hardcore fans. It is a ‘Fan Fic’ video because it has reimaged this iconic battle between Obi-Wan and Vader adding new content that links it to canon, but is not canon. It is, by far, THE best fan-made video from Star Wars I have ever seen! It outclasses all the fight scenes in the latest Star Wars movies. It comes close to matching the fight scenes in Phantom Menace, and AOTC. With a bigger budget leant to it this battle could easily be a great follow-up to the epic Battle Of The Heroes in ROTS. It takes samples from a lot of the movies with Vader in it and meshes them fairly seamlessly with BRAND NEW original content by the makers of this video. The work done on Obi-Wan’s face, if refined a bit, would far surpass the CGI work done on Tarken and Young Leia in Rogue One. I will say it matches perfectly Darth Vader’s rage and intensity from the ending of Rogue One. I’m sorry if I’m spoiling Rogue One, but . . . Its been out for a while now! Go watch! It’s a great movie! Forgive me if you have seen this already as it has gone viral, but if you have not seen this PLEASE watch if you are into Star Wars at all. It is the ultimate in Star Wars Fan Fiction! So, without further adieu, let me present SC38 Reimagined: For comparison, here is the original of this scene. It’s probably the remastered cut as it is very hard to see the old original version of this I saw in 1977.
  8. We are currently cleaning up and consolidating our sprawling collection of forums and clubs. When we started this process, we saw that the community was very spread out with low activity in most places. To help correct this, we have consolidated a few things. As part of that consolidation, the Fantasy Writing, Sci-Fi Writing and FanFiction writing clubs have been closed and their content has been moved to this forum. This puts all the authors back into one club and hopefully makes the content more active and useful for our authors.
  9. What can we do with the software system to better support FanFiction authors? I'm targetting Fandoms instead of sub-categories so that we can support crossovers. Right now, the system does not allow for more than one category. Therefore, I have to change to something that can allow that and not be considered a category as Invision defines it. Thoughts?
  10. Who has read any of the Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz? Alex Rider is basically a young James Bond. He gets into some pretty wild crap over the course of the nine novels.
  11. Since submitting a few manuscripts to a publisher and having one or two of them accepted, I can't help but notice the negative feeling many people hold about fanfiction. In particular, authors who began their writing lives in one fandom or another. I must admit, I don't understand the vitriol or the derogatory comments that some people feel the need to direct toward a writer just because they do, or have in the past, written fanfiction. Nor do I understand the 'avoid at all costs' attitude by some to ban any story from their 'To Read List' that is considered to have been 'pulled to publish.' What follows from here, in this post, are my thoughts and opinions. I don't profess to speak for any other reader or writer, other than myself. In the past, prior to the Internet, an aspiring author, who hadn't gone to university to study creative writing or journalism, probably went the route of submitting short stories to magazines and/or to writing competitions, be they local, national, or international, in order to learn their craft and build a resume. The advent of the Internet, however, opened up a whole new arena for writers to hone and perfect their skills and gain feedback. All of a sudden, there was a multitude of amateur author and fanfiction sites where one could upload a story and test the waters, so to speak. I am sure, many of the stories within the various fandoms are, indeed, odes to the writer's favourite character/book/movie etc., but I'm equally sure there are many writers who have merely used a character/story as a departure point. Many authors inspired, perhaps, as much by the actor playing the part as the character they portrayed. I personally know a few fanfic authors whose stories began as original fiction, and they selected a relevant fandom to post to, and in doing so changed their character's names and physical attributes to make them fit that particular fandom. Why did they do this? There could be umpteen reasons, and in the end, I can only speak for myself - I lacked the confidence to submit my original work to a publisher. It was my stint writing fanfiction, receiving a predominantly positive response to my stories, which gave me hope that my long-held dream of being a writer might actually be able to become a reality. It gave me belief in myself, and I am sure I am not alone in this. Having spent some time on various fanfiction sites, I agree with the many comments I've seen that a lot of the stories are not carefully thought out and researched, or particularly well written. But that is not all of them. I have stumbled across some absolute gems. Ones that have great plots, character development, succinct descriptions - all in all: damn good reads, and were they published works, I'd happily part with my hard-earned dollars to read them. (Anyone wanting to know of some of the 'gems', please feel free to make contact) I find the attitude that states all fanfiction is just rehashes of the original somewhat off-base. Certainly, some are, but many aren't, and I fail to see, as an example, how an author who wrote an M/M (or as its known in the fanfic world, slash) story involving two male characters who were heterosexual in the original as still being merely a 'rehash.' I mean, let's take the fandom statistics from fanfiction.net as of 23 February, 2013. Top three sites for books: Harry Potter (632,688), Twilight (207,307), Lord of the Rings (48,121) Top three sites for movies: Star Wars (29,964), Pirates of the Caribbean (19,639), High School Musical (17,934) Top three sites for TV Shows: Glee (89.899), Supernatural (73,143), Buffy: The Vampire Slayer (45,545) Out of those nine fandoms I think only three had gay characters - Buffy, High School Musical and Glee - please feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken. I don't purport to be a guru on pop culture. My point is that any writer who was inspired to take a heterosexual character (or the actor portraying a character) and make him gay/bi/transexual etc. has already distanced their character from canon. They have already taken the first step in creating and building an original character. Certainly, it may still bear the same name as the original character while their story is a fanfic, but in essence, it is not the same character anymore. I'm sure there are many gay 'Harrys' or 'Edwards' as well as straight ones in the real world. If they've taken English schoolboy-come-wizard Harry and made him an American, situated him on the moon, aged him to his mid twenties, or had him fall in love with Luna or Draco, they have, once again, distanced Harry from JK Rowlings' characterisation of him. Certainly, there may still need to be a lot done to transform their story into a truly original work, but the seeds are there. Why is there such an issue about where a writer finds inspiration? What does it matter if it's an actor, model, athlete, character in a book, movie, story, magazine or newspaper article, or someone you work with? Heavens, many of Shakespeare's most famous works were inspired by historical figures or old legends. The Aeneid by Virgil is clearly fanfic of The Iliad by Homer and Dante liked The Aeneid so much he used not only its story but also, Virgil, its author, to narrate his epic poem, The Divine Comedy. All three works are considered classics. If our ancestors had followed the belief that we shouldn't read a work that was inspired by another earlier work, then we'd have lost two wonderful pieces of writing. Let's take the theory a step further. If a singer busks or performs in a bar/pub/club, singing cover versions of other bands songs should he/she never be offered a contract to write and sing their own songs? Well, if that's the case, let's take Cilla Black, Marianne Faithful, The Mamas and the Papas, The Seekers, Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Elvis Presley, Michael Bolton, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, LeAnn Rimes, Boyz II Men and about 2100 other singers out the back and strip them of their contracts, records, and awards, because they all recorded their own versions of Yesterday by the Beatles. Or what about every designer who has had included in their collection a miniskirt or dress? Surely, they should feel ashamed? After all, it wasn't their idea. Should they even be allowed to do it, and should any of us want to buy their version, when it was Mary Quant who made it fashionable in the modern era? Maybe, we should only wear hers as hers is the original... Some of the world's most famous artists freely admitted to being inspired by the work of other artists. No one thought less of Picasso because he was influenced by Gaugain and Cezanne (Cubism for which Picasso is famous was directly inspired by the brush stroke style of Cezanne) Nor was Georges Braque looked down upon because his foray into cubism was inspired by that of Picasso. In the literary world, there are plenty of examples as well. Let's see... The Innocents by Francesca Segal is a modern retelling of Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence. Lavinia by Ursula K. Leguin tells the story of Lavinia the second wife of Aeneas from Virgil's The Aeneid, (yep, there he is again...) A Monster's Notes by Laurie Sheck imagines the relationship between Frankenstein's monster and Mary Shelley had they met when Mary was a child. Oh, and let's not forget Bridget Jones's Diary, which is a modern version of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Need more? Well, how about His Dark Materials trilogy by Pullman? They both retell and invert John Milton's Paradise Lost. Or there's Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood, which tells the feminine side of The Odyssey through the eyes of Odysseus's wife, Penelope. There's also Jane Smiley's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Thousand Acres, which is Shakespeare's King Lear set in the cornfields of Iowa. The list could go on and on, the point being, all of the above-mentioned stories could be viewed as fanfic or having 'borrowed' from the original. That tells me that just because a writer was inspired by a an existing story/character/movie/TV show it does not necessarily make their words unoriginal or mere rehashes. Why dismiss something out of hand? Would it really hurt to keep an open mind? At the end of the day; a good story, is a good story.
