  1. So far the reviews aren't very much in alignment with my expectations but I can still hope, right? Emerald Fennell didn't disappoint me with her previous works, like at all. Plus, as a huge admirer of Donna Tartt's The Secret History, my excitement is, I believe, fairly justified. If I'm not wrong then Saltburn is a story that deals with truly influential beauties and their horrors. What are your thoughts on this?
  2. Note: I'm frustrated. I swear. Deal with it. I was browsing YouTube yesterday when I came across a 10 Best LGBTQ Movies video. As I always do, I clicked on it, cause I'm always up for potentially finding new movies to watch. There were some good ones on the list, such as Call Me By Your Name, Milk, and Weekend for instance, and I found a couple I hadn't seen, either. But when they got down to #3, they lost me, because according to them the third best LGBTQ film in history is Brokeback Mountain. I was 17 when Brokeback Mountain came out. I saw it in the cinema, and I cried, and I thought it was wonderful. Because I was a 17-year-old at the time girl who hadn't really been exposed to a lot of queer cinema. I bought it on DVD when it came out, and watched it again. Then a few years passed, I became more experienced, watched other LGBTQ movies, and realised that Brokeback Mountain is, quite frankly, shit. All of my IRL queer friends agree with me. Not most, all. The film tends to be conspicuously absent when queer people make lists of greatest LGBTQ films. I feel like Brokeback Mountain caters to a straight audience that wants to feel liberal and accepting by watching gay characters on screen, but who ultimately feel more comfortable if it ends in tragedy. The story it's based on was written by a straight woman (not that there's anything wrong with straight people writing LGBTQ stories, and we have many, many straight authors on the site here who write absolutely wonderful gay fiction). Brokeback Mountain has served a purpose, of course. It has made gay stories more palatable to straight audiences, which is a good thing. The acting performances are marvellous, too. But it also demonstrated that the only way for an LGBTQ movie to win an Academy Award is if literally no one involved in its making is visibly queer. I'm not of the opinion that straight people can't play gay characters (they definitely can) or even that cis people can't play trans characters (they can, though they have a responsibility to to do well that few manage to fulfil). But nobody even remotely queer has their name on that movie. Author of original short story, straight. Writers, straight. Producers, straight. Ang Lee, totally straight. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal? Ding ding ding! Straight! As of last year, the only gay man to win an Academy Award playing a gay character, is Ian McKellen. And that was twenty fucking years ago. Meanwhile, if a cis-het actor plays a queer character in an even remotely successful film, they're guaranteed a nomination, if not a win. No trans actor has ever won an Oscar. No lesbian playing a lesbian has ever won an Oscar. Another movie that straight people keep harping on about is Blue is the Warmest Colour, which is objectively shit. After the third lengthy porn inspired male gaze centred sex scene, I switched that motherfucker off. Bohemian Rhapsody is being lauded by straight critics, while LGBTQ audiences are disappointed at the misrepresentation of Freddie Mercury's sexuality and the way everything goes to shit when he tries to live out his queer identity (which is a factually incorrect assessment of Freddie's queerness), while embracing his straight friends and staying out of 'that world' makes everything better (also factually incorrect). While not in and of itself a bad film, as a queer film it falls short, and a movie about Freddy Mercury ought to be a queer film. He's one of the most famous queer people in history. We've got Elton John, William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Alexander the Great, and Freddie Mercury. (Notice how there are no queer women on that list? Sigh...) There is a lot of great queer cinema. We've had long, extensive threads on the subject in The Lounge, where people have shared their top picks of literally hundreds of wonderful films, many of which actually have happy endings for once. Straight audiences can't handle a queer movie with a happy ending. It has to be sad, or it has to be heteronormative, and that's what we get. Things are improving a little, sure. Love, Simon is a notable exception in being a well loved queer teen movie with a sweet and happy ending where no one kills themselves. How lovely! Of course, Love, Simon didn't even earn an honourable mention in the video I watched. Weekend took second place, which redeemed the list somewhat. Carol came in first. Which is fine, it's a great movie, and doesn't end in tragedy. But fucking Brokeback Mountain ought to die a fiery death and be buried in an avalanche of awesome queer cinema. EDIT: Just to clarify: I'm not saying that Brokeback Mountain is objectively a bad movie, nor am I saying that the short story it's based on isn't good. What I am saying is that it's not an LGBTQ movie, it's made by straight people for straight people, and as such I don't think it belongs on lists of good queer movies. It's a bad queer film, that doesn't necessarily make it a bad film, period.
  3. I enjoyed this movie. I was a big fan of the first Jurassic Park. It was a definite classic. Of course, that was before Steven Speilberg nuked the fridge... Jurassic Park 2 kind of sucked as the only character they kept was Jeff "The Annoyance" Goldblum. Jurassic Park III, well... it was better than 2. The kid was less annoying too. So yeah... this is better than 2 or 3. Have you seen it? Where does it rate for you?

    2 Guns

This was a nice little action movie. And I generally enjoy any movie Denzel Washington shows up in. If you haven't you seen it, and you like action movies, this is worth checking out.
  5. As I mentioned in my book blog a couple weeks ago, I have been a fan of the Chronicles of Narnia for a long time. I've always been a bit disappointed that they didn't do all the books as movies, but they also seem to run out of steam in the process. (this series included). That said, I think they did a good job with 3 movies they did in this series. The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was the best of the 3 though, I think. If you haven't watched it and you like fantasy, this was well done.
  6. Myr

    Eragon

I mentioned the Eragon books a few weeks ago. They did make a movie out of the book. I liked the movie enough, but it has some weaknesses. The director's leather fetish for the young male actors was not one of them. This is worth seeing if you enjoy fantasy, dragons etc. The effects were done well and Jeremy Irons always adds some gravitas to what he shows up in. And the bad guy is played by John Malcovitch. Check it out.

    I Am Number Four

So I mentioned I am Number Four series of books by Pittacus Lore last Friday in my book blog. They did manage to make one movie of the series. It was a decent adventure with some nice eyecandy. Special effects were good and the movie was decent.
  8. So, I mentioned the book for this in the blog last Friday, so I thought I'd mention this movie. The release kind of sucks as for some stupid reason, they haven't released a widescreen dvd or a Blu-Ray. It is a cute little action movie with a lot of familiar British faces. It's a quick romp with nice eyecandy. There are worse things out there.
  9. Myr

    Justice League

With my internet down for 3 days except for phone, I've had some time to catch up on other things. (oddly enough). I got around to watching this finally and I enjoyed it. Ezra Miller in spandex.... mmm. There were a couple of spots that were a little slower and superman, as ever, is an overpowered hero. I'd say about 8/10. well worth watching and keeping in my collection.

    Nobody

I have been very turned off by the lecturing nonsense that's been released from Hollywood the last few years. The hack Millennial moron writers that have taken on scriptwriting and laid waste to subtlety and entertainment have virtually destroyed an entire industry and murdered my hobby of video collecting. I have over 1300 DVD's and Blu-Rays. But I've only bought 5 in 2021. And 4 of those were 80's and 90's movies on 4K. But I heard Nobody was both good entertainment and lacking any obvious karen nagging on some agenda or narrative or another. So, if you like a good action movie with an interesting little twist, then Nobody is a great movie. It's entertaining with no obvious agenda. Finally. Now if those clowns could keep doing that, I might start buying movies again. I'm not holding my breath.

    Midway - (2019)

This is a good movie that suffers from the comparison problem. It's a pretty high bar for those interested in world war II movies to leap over the original 1976 Midway. The original had Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, Glenn Ford, Robert Michum, Robert Wagner amount others. The ensemble cast was a who's who of Hollywood legends. So, set that aside if you, like me, grew up with your dad watching the movie. The 2019 movie was well paced. The cast clicked pretty good. And Dennis Quaid and Woody Harrelson have really grown in their craft over the years. They both have a history of goofy comedic roles. It was nice to see them both in serious roles here. And I thought they both pulled it off. The movie did a good job of stressing just how important this battle was in WW II. The special effects were good too. I enjoyed it and will keep it in my movie library.

    Uncharted (Movie)

I'm not going to complain about a movie with Tom Holland... This movie is entertaining as a stand alone thing. I've only played the game a little bit, so I'm not as married to the source material. That said, it is a rip-off of Lara Croft's Tomb Raider which is itself a rip off of Indiana Jones. I'm sure there is a deeper dive there too. To be fair, I like all the franchises and pretty much most things that fit in this sort of genre. (Don't get me started on National Treasure ) Enjoyable flick. Don't think too hard on the physics.
  13. Myr

    Moonfall

Moonfall is another movie from groaner disaster movie guru Roland Emmerich. This movie is one of those -turn your brain off completely sort of movies. If you are familair with physics, turn that off. the laws of physics are even more optional in this movie than in 2012, which features a limo doing jumps under a subway train... the groan are more than that. The special effects are pretty good though. Interesting sci-fi story but we're not talking Arthur C. Clarke here either... If you like non-serious disaster movies where the actors earnestly try... this is one of those.
  14. Myr

    Oblivion

This was an interesting spin on sci-fi. The special effects and visuals were really good. I have added the 4k Blu-Ray to my library. If you haven't seen it and you like sci-fi and some action, check it out. It's been out long enough that you should be able to find it on one of those streaming services.

    Dune Movie 2021

Please no one tell @Cia, but I still have not read Frank Herbert's Dune. Though I have seen 2021 Dune movie starring Timothée Chalamet. I enjoyed the visuals a lot in this movie. It can been a bit slow at times, but it was nice to disconnect and just enjoy it. They made one hell of a big set up... I hope all the changes at going on a Discovery/Warner Bros doesn't ruin a sequel for this.
  16. So the trailer for the new remake of Dune is out. Has film making technology finally reached the point to do the source material justice?
  17. Let's talk about the recent movie, not really sure where to post this but I just want to vent out and discuss away! I need the thoughts of the people here. I highly value opinions from creative minions of prose and poetry. So, your thoughts?
  18. To date, I've watched several Gay theme movies, and have been sorely disappointed. The "Eating Out series" is an example of Bad Gay films. "Shelter" was good, like the exception to the rule. This is just my opinion, but it just seems most of the English language Films, are just bad. From the quality of Acting, Storytelling, to Production itself, they all seem less than C-list movies. The foreign films being much better quality. Does, anyone have a suggestion on a Good Gay Theme movie?
  19. What's your opinion (if you have one) on the fact that the majority of gay/lesbian and bisexual tv and movie characters today are still being played by hetrosexual actors and actresses? I think it would be a great thing if we, especially the younger generation, had more real life GLBT role models to look up to in the entertainment industry, especially non stereotypical gay actors and actresses, dispelling the myths that all gays, lesbians look or act a certain way, or the fact that our sexual orientation somehow defines who we are as a person, our interests and personalities and so on. I think we have come a long way, especially within the last ten years, although we still have a long way to go. For instance there are literally hundreds of 'coming out' Vlogs on youtube, some being as young as thirteen, forteen or fifteen years old. Something I wouldn't have imagined happening as little as ten years ago, even in the UK which is quite liberal in comparrison to the US on gay issues. I think media has played a significant role in this transformation. On the flip side of the coin, it is a good thing to see movie roles involving GLBT's even if the roles are played by straight actors and actresses, as this too also helps out.
  20. The BBC reports that J.K. Rowling is going to write a screenplay for a film version of the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them detailing the adventures of its fictional author, Newt Scamander. Are we excited??
  21. Jared Leto from the television show 'My So Called Life' and the band 'Thirty Seconds To Mars' plays a transsexual person in the movie 'Dallas Buyers Club'. I have always found Jared Leto to be almost pretty and I look forward to seeing him in the part of Rayon. This movie is about the early days of non-existent medications that could be used for treating HIV and the attempt to acquire non approved drugs . I've watched the trailer. It showcases Matthew McConaughey as real life Ron Woodroof. Has anyone else seen the trailer yet? http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/people/2013/09/09/tiff-jared-leto/2787249/ http://www.focusfeatures.com/dallas_buyers_club?utm_source=AllSearch&utm_medium=Search&utm_campaign=DallasBuyersClub
  22. Ok, plain and simple please suggest me some Christmas flavored LGBT movies. So far, I've found only "Make The Yuletide Gay". It's a 2009 comedy about a gay college student who "straightens up" for the holidays as he visits his family and on a turn of fate his boyfriend appears on his doorsteps as an unwelcome surprise with altogether hilarious consequences. It's funny to the hilt but emotional as well. Worth a watch. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1305714/?ref_=nv_sr_1
  23. Hi folks, As the title of this topic says I'd like to know what's your favourite movie, film or tv series. Share them with me. Also what kind of genre do you prefer, where do you watch your movies; at the cinema or at home and do you bring along any friends, maybe your bf/gf? http://s973.photobuc...t=Medium_S5.jpg I'm currently watching Medium, season 7 at home...alone. This movie is about Allison Dubois, a woman with psychic abilities. She usually dreams about murders that are about to happen or that happened in the past. So as you can see I'm crazy about detective/crime movies. I just..simply love them. What about you?
  24. Inspired by a Twitter thing, yes... Describe a movie (or movie series, I guess) in six words. Next person has to guess the movie, then add a new plot summary. Father freezes daughter's boyfriend, alienates son.
