I thought I would talk this week about the use of quoting and mentions while you make posts and comments on the site. There is a certain etiquette to this to keep topics flowing smoothly without making a nuisance of yourself. So, first up, some definitions: Quoting is when you press the "Quote" button and it pulls in the entire comment Quote This is when you highlight a portion of text and a small "Quote This" box pops up that you then click. It functions the same as Quoting, but only for the highlighted text. Mentions are when you type the "@" symbol followed by a name. The system prompts you to create a mention @Myr Users are then alerted that someone mentioned them. (example of "Quote This") You shouldn't ever really use the first option unless the post you are quoting is short. Most people have just read it and there is no reason to repeat the whole thing, especially if it is long. That ends up being more irritating than helpful. A great alternative is to highlight the small section you are referring to and using "Quote This" instead. Now, I understand that this is harder to do on mobile devices as well as other circumstances, so a great alternative there is to use Mentions. The system can get squirrelly if you use a lot of them in a row, but you usually shouldn't need such a thing. Just a note that is forum software bug more than anything, if you are using post dating feature, if you use a mention, the person will be alerted, even if the post/blog/whatever has not posted yet. I think that is supposed to be patched, but I know from experience that it sends the notification as soon as you submit it, not when it posts. Of course, I have previously made a video on how to use mentions. It is here on YouTube: Would you be willing to like and subscribe if you found the video helpful? It lets me know whether or not making further videos is worthwhile.

I like sharing quotes that inspire me and help motivate me to work on writing and other endeavors, and I thought you all might enjoy the same thing. I went looking for a forum topic on the subject but couldn't find one, so I figured I'd start one. I'm going to share two to start us off. First this iconic one from Ira Glass: “Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” And then my favorite Miyamoto Musashi quote, which I also use for my signature: “Today is victory over yourself of yesterday; tomorrow is your victory over lesser men.” What quotes have inspired you in the past?

From Roommates “You can’t ask a man for his number when he’s passing around the meat,” he said then winked, “you have to wait until he’s passing out the chocolate.” “Why did I become friends with you?” I asked rolling my eyes. “To get your head out of your fucking ass, Will." “I’m meeting billionaires in a few fucking hours,” he said turning to look at me, “I’ll be lucky if I don’t shit my pants.” "I don't feel as free as you do." "If you're unwilling to fix this, then you're just a damn distraction." "It would have rocked living here," Brett commented. "I'd slide down the stair railing at least five times a day." “Relationships aren’t ruined by spilled milk,” I said and she smiled. “Now Lucinda, I don’t want to look at our portrait and see sweat or flushed looks, we want to look humble, refreshed, and above all happy.” “You can leave clothes on the ground they won’t walk away,” he said laughing slightly. “Well maybe you’ll meet someone at the anniversary party,” she said, “I’ve invited all of your sister’s classmates for a reason.” - “Oh, I thought it was so Kathryn could shove her new boobs into their faces.” “Well breakfasts should have more live shows,” Brett said leaning back in his chair and stretching.
