    Epilogue

Epilogue It’s been a month since I last had a gun pulled on me. After a thorough investigation by Long Beach Police and the Securities and Exchange Commission, Brian Davenport was formally charged with multiple counts of securities fraud, one count of racketeering, and one count of attempted murder. Todd Evans was charged with securities fraud, attempted murder, and multiple counts of breaking and entering. Thanks to the spreadsheet, the SEC had enough evidence to go after the other

    Chapter 30

Chapter 30 Over the next hour, what seemed like a ton of police officers arrived at the pier. No wonder why taxes were so high; it took a few dozen officers to secure a crime scene. A team hauled spotlights that illuminated the Pier and the surrounding beach, turning the night into day. Some officers took photographs; others scoured the pier and the paved trail for evidence. Brian and Todd were nowhere insight. I assumed they had been properly mirandized and hauled off to the station fo

    Chapter 29

Chapter 29 Something told me the fist pounding at my door was attached to someone who wanted the smartphone back. Was it Todd or Brian? I flipped the light switch in my room off and prayed my visitor hadn't noticed the sudden change in illumination. Using the light emitting from the monitor of the computer screen to see, I grabbed the smartphone and shoved it in my pocket, then pulled the memory card out of the reader and slipped the card into my sock. I heard glass shatter and I knew

    Chapter 28

Chapter 28 When I arrived home, I did a quick sweep of all the rooms to be sure Todd hadn’t visited me while I was away. Nothing looked disturbed and I didn't get any vibes my personal space had been violated since last I was home. I ran back to the front door and double checked that the door was locked, then went to my room to start my work. There were two things I wanted to get done before going to bed. The first was to call Sandy to see if Todd's name was familiar from her time as

    Chapter 27

Chapter 27 When I woke up on Sunday, it was seven in the morning. I had a tinge of a headache and was still wearing the street clothes I had on the night before. My wallet was thrown carelessly on the floor next to my shoes and socks. I must have passed out and Brian had to put me in bed. I hoped he wasn’t disgusted by my excessive drinking. My clothes smelled horrible, so I stripped and crawled into one of Brian's robes. I found Brian sitting at his breakfast nook. He had already

    Chapter 26

Chapter 26 In the morning when I woke, Brian was no longer in bed. I did a quick check under the sheets. Sure enough, I was still wearing my boxers, a good sign that I didn't let my hormones take control of the night. I rummaged through his closet and found a robe. I threw it on and it was far too big for me. But it was better than running around in my skivvies. Brian was sitting at his breakfast nook sipping coffee and surfing the internet on his laptop. I walked up behind him and

    Chapter 25

Chapter 25 Friday had the next hurdle I needed to get past. The first hurdle was trying to help Ana move forward in her career. She was now registered to start a class towards her cosmetology license, which was hopefully the first step in the right direction. Now, I had to worry about my own career. Trevor was scheduled to come in today for his final workout and weigh-in before his wedding day. This was his last hurrah, to see if he hit his weight loss goal. For me, it meant proving th

    Chapter 24

Chapter 24 On Thursday morning, I woke up from a deep sleep to the sound of my cell phone ringing. Waking up on my regular schedule was never an easy process for me, usually taking at least five or ten minutes until I was fully functional. But waking up earlier than usual by the ringing of a phone was so much worse. I looked at the phone's screen. It was someone from Sports Courts. I glanced at my alarm clock, hoping that I hadn’t overslept for work. It was only a quarter after six.

    Chapter 23

Chapter 23 On Wednesday, I had only two clients scheduled for training sessions. I expected to have most of the day to sit at my desk and figure out how the lesson Sandy had given me on front-running might apply to Todd. I really should have done that right after I saw Sandy on Tuesday, but she overloaded me with information and I needed a little distance to maintain my sanity. My plans were foiled when a mass shipment of workout gear and nutritional supplements arrived. The usual rou

    Chapter 22

Chapter 22 On Tuesday morning, I woke up before my alarm went off. I was still excited about my find from the previous night. Sandy was a smart cookie and a trusted friend. If there was anyone who could help me understand investment scams, it would definitely be Sandy. I had an appointment with Trevor in the morning. He was still high from our conversation and his workout was stronger than ever. At the end of our session, I reminded Trevor that he was scheduled for a training sessio

    Chapter 21

Chapter 21 On Monday morning, while I trotted alongside one of my clients on a treadmill, the thought of Todd getting away with the break-in at St. Theresa's Thrift Shop gnawed away at my gut. I was sure Todd broke into the Thrift Shop to try to get his smartphone back. But from the conversation I had with Sister Ann Marie, it didn't sound like the police were planning to pursue a full investigation of the crime. It was a closed case for them. Who could blame them? No clues were left

    Chapter 20

Chapter 20 On Sunday, I woke up at eight and got ready for my day with Brian. While I showered, I thought about my visit to St. Theresa's. The phone was clearly important to Todd – important enough for him to break in and try to retrieve it. I needed to figure out what information was on it that would drive him to burglarize a church. I had already tried replacing the battery, which was a dead end. It was probably time to take the phone to a tech expert, someone who could figure out why

    Chapter 19

Chapter 19 When I got back to the house, I pulled the lawn mower out of the garage. Living with my parents was rent free, but there were a few self-imposed chores that came with the deal. My parents never asked me to help out, but it was my little way of feeling like I contributed to our household. I attached the bag to the electric mower and started the battery. Physical activity always helped me think, so while I trimmed the front yard, I processed my conversation with Kimberly. No

    Chapter 18

Chapter 18 I left my house a quarter before ten on Saturday morning to pickup Ana and then we headed over to G1 Salon and Spa for her job shadowing experience. G1 was one of Long Beach's high end salon and spas. Actually, G1 was Long Beach's only high end salon and spa. It was located on Naples, an extremely wealthy island of Long Beach, and the neighborhood where people could most likely afford the overpriced services. Needless to say, G1 wasn't a place I frequented. “I’m a littl
