The day John got his wish - 1. The day John got his wish

A day in the life of John, a student at Graydon College.

John was sleeping peacefully when his door slamming shut woke up him from a deep sleep. He felt a foot kicking the base of his bed. He opened his eyes and saw his roommate glaring at him.

“You’re still in bed, get up shithead or you’ll be late for class!”

John rubbed the sleep from his eyes and took in his surroundings. He was clutching his navy blue comforter and was staring across his room to his best friend Trevor, who was throwing his backpack onto his bed and sitting down at his desk with a dramatic flair.

John sat up slowly and placed his feet onto the cheap carpet and with a stretch turned back to his bed and began making it.

“J, mom isn’t here,” Trevor said turning and watching him. “Go put on clothes.”

John was used to the teasing. Trevor and him had been best buds since high school. They got a room together when they came to Graydon to save on money and had been sharing a room in their apartment ever since.

“If you don’t like it, then stop looking,” John said groggily and without really looking managed to grab a towel and a clean pair of boxers and opened the door and went across the hall to use the bathroom.

Even since he was little John found he could never really wake up properly until he had a shower. Something about the warm water striking his face and the ritual of cleaning himself was just the thing to clear his mind, calm himself and relieve any tension or soreness left from the night before.

John placed his head under the spray and closed his eyes.

His mind wandered to the night before…

Trevor had been out late studying and John had already been in bed when the door slammed shut. John was awoken like every time before but didn’t even dignify a response and didn’t even move.

John heard Trevor move around the room and John chanced a glance and opened his eyes. Trevor was changing into his silk boxers. Trevor lifted his shirt off and revealed his smooth muscular shoulders and toned back exposing the perfect cleft leading to the small of his back. He turned and exposed his flat stomach and toned chest.

John watched as Trevor undid his belt and let his jeans slide down to the floor along with his boxers exposing himself unknowingly to his watcher. John took in the sight of his beautiful best friend as he stretched and in a graceful movement picked up his silks and slid them on and tucking himself in and the waistband gave a gentle snap.

Trevor went to his bed and lay down on the covers.

John closed his eyes and was about to reach sleep when he heard Trevor snapping his fingers. He chanced a glance and saw Trevor was checking to see if he was still asleep.

John didn’t respond and then he heard a rustling from across the room. He sneaked a glance and allowed his eyes to open once again. Trevor had himself exposed again and this time it was clear he was taking pleasure with himself. He had taken his blanket and pushed it aside exposing his whole body lying in the bed.

The light from the window cast a shadow just above his bed allowing the light to gleam off his abdomen as it flexed and crunched with each movement. His hands were wrapped around himself he pushed and pulled and the whole movement was pure eroticism.

Trevor began mumbling something that John couldn’t quite hear when suddenly Trevor grunted and with a spasm and a deep sigh the show was over. Sweat and seed sparkled off his chest in the moonlight as he took in heavy breaths, but from across the room John had tears in his eyes…

The memory of the night before washed down the drain as John panted in the shower. He finished rinsing his hair and stepped out onto the cold tile floor wrapping a towel around himself his finished his morning rituals shaving and fixing his hair. He looked on at himself in the mirror trying to ignore his short pudgy frame. He allowed the comb to pass through his longer brown hair that fell against his neck.

He had always meant to tell Trevor that he was gay, he had many opportunities but he was too afraid to come forward. There were so many times like the night before he wanted to do something, anything. He had come to realize he had fallen hopelessly in love with his best friend.

‘But nobody could want a short chunky kid,’ John thought replaying the words he overheard his father say to his mother. Who would still remind him whenever they could that he didn’t have a girlfriend and that he should come home and go to church whenever he could because ‘they had such nice girls there.’

He made sure he was dried off completely and put on his boxers and went back across the hall to his room. Trevor was writing something at his desk. He turned when he saw John come in.

“Not like you to hold off on work,” John commented as he came into the room.

Trevor looked up and smiled, the look made John weak in the knees.

“Yea, came up suddenly,” he turned back to his paper.

John went to his closet and took out some clothes and threw them on hastily and grabbed a belt and started putting it through the loops.

“How was practice?” John asked

John turned and looked at Trevor.

“Sucked,” came the response.

“Why?” he asked.

Trevor turned to him and took a pause.

“The stupid soccer team has a game and they needed more practice so they took the field. We ended up inside again and Lacrosse is not good inside,” Trevor sighed.

“Sorry, that sucks,” John said.

“Yea thanks,” Trevor said “are we meeting for lunch?”

John clasped his belt and tucked it in.

“That’s the plan, my Voice class gets out at eleven, I’ll meet you on the quad at quarter past,” John said.

“Good, I’m done,” Trevor said packing up his books “off to economics.”

“Sounds, like fun” John smirked.

“Same fun as your class,” Trevor shuddered “at least you have music.”

“Yeah but you should hear this,” John said grabbing his bag and then the small oboe case at the foot of his bed, “it sucks.”

Trevor smiled getting up and grabbing his keys.

“Let’s go.” Trevor said.

John locked the door and walked silently down the hall with Trevor and got outside. They walked the short distance to the end of the street and Trevor took the right towards the science area on campus and John went left towards the quad towards the liberal arts area of campus.

It only took him around five minutes to get to the art building and went down into the basement where the studio rooms were and also his Vocal Pedagogy class. He entered the room and found is usual seat on the side of the room.

This room was unique as it was the concert space where most private recitals were given. It had its own stage and organ and a upper seating section for the audience. There was a piano on the stage and the chairs surrounded it in a semi circle.

The class was still filing in and John took out the music he had practiced the day before. It was called ‘Where’er you Walk’ by Handel. It was from his only opera called Semele. Despite being a instrumental focus, namely Cello he had been an excellent singer in High School even making it to the state conference two times.

The stragglers finally came in along with their professor Jacques Mundes, he was the head of the vocal department at Graydon. He was an older man with salt and pepper hair and a goatee. His glasses sat on the bridge of his nose and he took his normal seat at the piano.

“Get out your music, today is going to be a practical,” He said.

He instantly began playing vocal warm-up and the class started to sing along with his playing. The class was extremely diverse in the sense that the class was made up of several different kinds of music majors. Vocal Pedagogy was required for all degrees so kids from Music education, sound recording, composition, vocal and instrument performance and percussion were all there.

John let his brain wander as he sang his warm-ups. He had done the same thing so many times before in high school. It seemed like a lifetime ago.

One distinct memory that stood out was when one day he had stayed late practicing for a concert and was in the music room practicing alone. The music room was adjacent to the gym back in his old school and the locker room was right around the corner.

He had been singing and was in a trance when he heard some kids laughing. He turned his head and realized he had left the band room door open. Four guys from the football team were standing in the frame laughing at him.

“What the f**k are you yapping about queer?” the biggest guy said coming into the room.

“Mendelssohn, from Elijah,” John managed to stammer as the other three guys came into the room, the last one kicking the door shut.

John knew these guys well; they were the biggest troublemakers in school and the prized starting lineup for the football team.

“Yeah what the song about?” the big guy asked.

“It’s a hymn for the book of Psalms called; For he shall give his angels charg…”

“Sing it,” the big guy interrupted.

John froze where he was not really wanting to move or do anything.

“I said to sing it.” The larger guy said again even louder causing John to jump and he took a seat at the piano and played the first few strands.

For he shall give his angels charge over thee

That shall protect thee in all thy ways thou go’est

Fag,” and with a sudden push the larger kid pushed John off the piano bench and onto the floor. Just then the door opened.

John heard some knocking on the door and looked up from the floor to see Trevor walk into the band room.

“Sup Walters,” the big guy said.

Instantly Trevor rushed across the room and was by his side.

“Are you alright?” he gestured as he helped John off the floor, then took two steps forward towards the big football player.

“You want him?” Trevor asked “you go through me.”

It was it at that moment John realized the depths of his feelings for Trevor. John’s eyes wandered over Trevor and realized he was still in his track pants exposing most of his legs.

The larger guy actually took a step back, even though it was four against one. John didn’t really count himself as part of the fight.

“Come’on guys,” one of the other guys said putting his hand on the larger guy’s shoulder. John held his breath and slowly the jocks walked out of the room. The larger one casting him a fleeting glance as they moved back towards the gym.

“Thanks Trev,” John said dusting himself off.

“Are you hurt?” Trevor asked.

“No, I’m fine,” Trevor said.

Trevor looked John over and after making sure himself he let out a small sigh.

“If they hurt you,” Trevor paused choosing his words carefully “I don’t know what I would do.”

“Thanks Trev,” John said “you scared them.”

Trevor leaned in and gave John a one armed hug.

“That’s what friends are for, we watch each other,” Trevor said.

John gave a faint smile recalling the memory when he was suddenly snapped out of his trance.

“John,” Professor Mundes called.

John stood in place and the professor played the first few strands of Handel’s music. He sang through it and halfway through he closed his eyes and let himself get carried by the tune. He finished and sat back down.

“John I want you to stay after class.” Professor Mundes said with a small nod and continued down the class.

John waited as the rest of the class all took their turns. Finally the end of the period was reached and the teacher dismissed them and everyone stood and the shuffling of chairs and papers rang throughout the concert hall.

“Professor,” John asked “you wanted me to stay?”

“Ah, yes,” Professor Mundes said briefly pushing up the rim of his glasses and gave John an appraisal. “I wanted to discuss your past assignment.”

“What about it?” John asked

“You are a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” Professor Mundes smiled “I know my vocal students inside and out, I’m surprised you went under my radar for so long.”

“What do you mean?” John asked

“You have an amazing singing ability, but I wanted you to stay and sing this piece the way it was meant to be sung. I wanted to hear it for myself and I didn’t want to embarrass you in front of your peers.” He said

“Did I not sing it properly?” John asked.

“No, nobody did.” The professor smiled “Look at the clef.”

“It’s treble.” John said

“Exactly, from your theory class tell me about treble G.” he smiled

John quickly worked out what he was saying.

“I sang it an octave too low,” John said.

Jacques smiled and gave a nod.

“Just because you are a guy doesn’t change the starting pitch,” he said “ready to give it a shot?”

John looked at his watch and groaned because he was already late, Trevor would have to wait.

“Alright,” John said.

“Good,” the professor turned back to the piano and gave the starting pitch.

John practiced a bit and then gave Professor Mundes the signal to start.

The first opening strains echoed through the hall.

Where’er you walk

Cool gales shall fan the glade

Trees where you sit

Shall crowd into a shade

Trees where you sit

Shall crowd into shade

John sang much more powerfully than before. His voice carried off the walls and the higher pitch resonated within him and through him. He reached the transition and the real power behind the music came out.

Where’er you tread

The Blushing flowers shall rise

And all things flourish

And all things flourish

Where’er you turn your eyes

He continued singing and came to the coda and pressed onward. The professor was giving his a huge smile and John couldn’t help but smile back. Finally they reached the end of the sound and the final strains were played on the piano.

“Bravo,” Professor Mundes said “exquisite, you captured the song perfectly.”

“Thanks,” John said

“Now, I do believe it is lunch time, thank you for staying.” The professor stood and turned around, “can I help you?”

John swung around and leaning against the entrance was Trevor.

“He’s waiting for me,” John said.

“Oh, alright then,” Professor Mundes said “sorry for keeping you.”

“No problem professor,” John said with a shrug.

John grabbed his things and walked towards Trevor. The both exited the room and headed for the stairs.

“That was cool,” Trevor said “you were great.”

“What are you doing here?” John said a little more forceful than he wanted.

“My class stopped early so I came to you, you aren’t embarrassed are you, it was amazing,” Trevor gushed.

John was embarrassed and he quickened his pace towards the dining hall as if he were being chased. He wanted to believe Trevor but a small part of him couldn’t and it really upset him.

“I didn’t mean to upset you,” Trevor said.

“I know, let’s get some lunch,” John said.

They passed through the quad and took the usual shortcut through the student union building which also housed the dinning café, about halfway through it the slowed from a crowd that seemed to be gathered.

“I wonder what’s going on,” Trevor said.

They snaked through some students when suddenly John was stopped by a very flamboyant man with short blonde hair; he was short and seemed skinny with a slight belly.

“Candlelight Vigil” he said with a lisp hanging off his tone shoving a paper into John’s hand.

“For whom?” John said taking the paper and looking down at it.

John didn’t really pay attention to the name he was too busy reading the headline.

“Gay student Attacked”

John felt a lump in his throat.

“Oh,” Trevor said gesturing to the paper “he’s the boyfriend of the fairy prince on the soccer team.” Trevor said

“Fairy Prince?” John asked Trevor.

“Yea, Fairy Prince” Trevor said again.

John snapped back to their blonde stranger who was staring at John in shock.

“Well I never!” the guy said taking the paper back out of John’s hand and with a huff pushed his way between them and into the crowd.

“What happened?” Trevor asked

“I think that guy was gay, and you just said fairy prince.” John said

“Well he is,” Trevor said “The captain of the soccer team is gay.”

“I don’t think you should have said ‘fairy prince,’” John said.

“What,” Trevor asked “it’s not like I called him a fag hole?”

John started walking again even more upset than he was before. It was bad enough Trevor had come in while he was singing and then comment about it, but it was clear that coming out to him was not a good idea. John nearly bowled a girl over as he rounded the corner entering the dining hall.

“Sorry,” he muttered rushing past.

He entered the student café and grabbed a tray and tried to find something that didn’t look horribly disgusting. He settled on a ham and cheese sandwich and some chips. He found a table near the back of the hall and took a seat. Trevor came around the corner a moment later holding a tray with a hamburger and fries. Trevor took a seat across from John and began eating.

“How was your class?” John asked.

“We got out early,” John said between bites “What was that music you were singing?”

“Handel,” John replied.

“It was neat,” Trevor said casting his gaze down to his food.

John blushed and was extremely embarrassed.

“I did not know you were going to come and find me,” John said.

“I didn’t mind waiting,” Trevor answered “I’ll be right back I want ketchup.”

Trevor got up and walked through the dining room. While walking through John saw Trevor stop and start talking with a girl. The way she was leaning in to talk to him made John extremely jealous and fueled the already upset feeling he had.

John was already used to this kind of heartache. Two summers ago Trevor had come up with the idea to work at a local deaf summer camp. Things had been fine until about mid-summer over the weekend when only the staff was there.

Trevor has suggested they go out sailing and when he was late John went to their cabin to find him. He found John behind the cabin with Susan. She had her mouth attached to his waist.

John knew there were others but he knew Trevor hadn’t ever seriously dated someone since middle school. So to see him with this girl made him angry.

Trevor came back with the same girl.

“John this is Beth, she’s in my class as well,” Trevor said.

Beth just gave a smile and sat down next to Trevor so close that their legs were touching.

John sucked in a breath and swallowed the angry words that were on the tip of his tongue.

“So what are you studying?” Beth asked John

“I’m studying Music,” John said

“Well I’m studying accounting I think that…” Beth began and then focused only on Trevor and started talking and talking. It didn’t take long for John to realize she had no interest in listening to him and soon he was forgotten.

John silently got up and put his things into the trash and turned back and looked at the table. Beth was still talking and Trevor was still enraptured. Blinking back hurt tears John turned his head around and walked out of the hall.

John walked through the student building not really paying attention to where he was going. Suddenly he felt something solid and he felt his feet slip out from underneath him. Soon he felt the cold hard floor on his side and turned onto his back.

“Are you alright?” he heard a voice call down to him.

John looked up and saw the face of the guy who had handed him the paper earlier.

“Yea I’m fine I was just,” John began saying but stopped when he saw the offered hand.

“Thanks,” he said pulling himself up. Standing he found himself face to face with the blonde cute flamboyant guy from earlier.

“Oh you’re the hater,” the guy said.

“Excuse me?” John asked.

“You said ‘fairy price,’” the guy said.

“That wasn’t really… oh… yea I’m sorry about that,” John said rubbing his side which ached.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” the guy asked.

“Yeah I…” John said trying to take a step and winced “think I need to sit down for a moment.”

The guy disappeared behind the nearest door and came back out with a wheeled office chair.

“Sit,” he commanded and helped John into the chair and wheeled it into the room behind them.

The room behind them was a small office with a bunch of filing cabinets and a small desk with a macbook on it. In front of the desk were two chairs and on the wall was a large poster emblazoned

Gay, Lesbian, Transgendered and Questioning Student Group.

The guy sat across from him in one of the guest chairs and looked him over.

“Are you going to be okay, or should I call the EMTs?” he asked

“I’ll be fine in a minute, it’s just a stitch,” John said.

“I’m sorry about earlier when I was being pissy, I am just upset the kid who was attacked was a friend of a friend and has made the whole student group upset,” He said.

“That’s alright,” John said.

“I’m Brian,” he said offering John his hand “Brian Richards.”

“John Blackwell,” John answered shaking Brian’s hand.

“Pleasure is all mine sugar,” Brian said in his familiar effeminate drone.

“Could you not sat it like that, it makes me uncomfortable,” John said.

Brian winced and backed away slightly as if slapped but the frown was replaced quickly with a mask of serenity.

“If I could shut the fabulous off I would, but sadly this is natural,” Brian said but his tone change into a more masculine tone “is this any better.”

“Much,” John nodded

“This is my father the lawyer business voice,” Brian said as if bored “it’s been a few years since I used it.”

“Since when?” John asked.

“Since my father threw me out, couldn’t take away my trust fund my mother had left me so here I am, been living alone for a few years now,” He said.

“I’m sorry,” John said “if speaking like that is a painful reminder…”

“I’m glad you understand,” Brian said with a slightly lighter tone.

“I guess that was really insensitive of me, I am sorry,” John said.

“Well at least you aren’t hopeless like that friend of yours,” Brian said much more back to the way he had sounded before but not quite as flourished.

“So,” John said at a loss as to what to say.

“So, why did you go barreling down the hall and come crashing into our office, so why do you look so upset, so why haven’t you admitted you are gay yet?” Brian said checking his list off with his fingers dramatically.

“I’m not gay, how could you think…” John paused at the look on Brian’s face.

“Puh- lease!” Brian said waving his arm out “Brian has perfect gaydar and he’s never been wrong once.”

“Have you always referred to yourself in the third person?” John asked which Brian simply ignored.

John remained silent.

“Let me guess, it’s the Neanderthal,” Brian said and John looked down.

“Oh Lord I’m right, you love him but he’s clueless,” Brian said gently.

At that moment something inside John broke, perhaps the was the stress of being so close to Trevor and never saying anything, to his whole mess of a morning to finally the present. John felt the tears coming and Brian shot out of his chair and quickly closed the door.

“How did you know?” John asked and relaxed when Brian knelt down next to him and wrapped his arms around him and let himself be pulled into a hug.

Brian held onto him as John felt his defenses coming down and the pain he was feeling grow stronger until a sob retched in his body heaving a great spasm from him and the tears fell. Brian simply held on tighter and John felt his own arms climb up and wrap around this stranger and he held on tightly.

“It’s going to be alright,” Brian said giving him a squeeze and leaned back.

“I’m sorry,” John said trying to regain some of his control and wiped his eyes.

“Don’t be,” Brian said giving a deep sigh “all part of my job.”

“It hurts,” John said recalling how he had felt when he had seen Trevor with Beth in the dining hall and how he had longed for Trevor ever since he had rescued him in high school. Even living with him day to day like the night before had begun to wear on him.

John looked up into Brian’s face and saw his concerned and caring look. One of Brian’s hands was holding his arm and his other rested on John’s shoulder.

“Thank you,” John said willing the emotions to calm and he gave Brian’s hand a gentle squeeze.

“Well we got to look out for each other you know?” Brian smiled and pulled away taking a seat again.

“Feel better?” he asked

John chuckled embarrassed

“I didn’t mean to break down there on you,” John wiped his eyes.

“Not every day I get to hold such a cute guy,” Brian said.

John blushed

“I’m not cute,” he refuted.

“Super cute,” Brian deadpanned.

“Thanks,” John said embarrassed once again “for helping me, and talking to me and listening.”

“Oh that was easy, but what are you going to do now?” Brian asked

“Go home and take a nap and pretend this day didn’t happen?” John said

“Why don’t you tell him how you feel?” Brian asked

John jumped out of his seat the pain in his side forgotten

“I can’t do that!” he nearly screeched

“Woah, hey now,” Brian put his hands up “calm down now, I was only saying.”

John felt a tension building up inside of him, it was the same tension he felt when he say Trevor with a girl and the same tension he felt when he was facing those four guys alone.

Fear

John realized at that moment that he was afraid and it was that fear that was crippling him. He took a second and calmed himself.

“I can’t just tell him, we’ve been friends for ages, he could tell my folks and they would not handle it well.” John said

“Is it really worth it, feeling like you do all the time?” Brian asked leaning back in his seat.

John had to think for a moment as he considered it.

“What if I tell him and I lose him, I just like being near him, he’s my best friend,” John said.

Brian nodded

“Well it looks like you are feeling better, here,” Brian reached onto the desk and handed John the flyer he had earlier. “Jason was a real closet case and a real jerk, he had a hard time coming out I heard. Mother doesn’t speak to him… it happens, but love is worth the risk. His partner was beaten nearly to death. You never know when it might be too late.”

John swallowed a knot in his throat and took the paper.

“Thanks,” he managed to say.

“Good, now get out of here and cheer up, if you want to talk again you can generally find me here,” Brian said standing up.

John offered his hand which Brian slapped away and pulled John into a hug,

“Be good,” Brian said in his same effeminate voice which for some reason didn’t annoy John anymore.

“I will,” John said and opened the door and with a brief wave left the office in hopes of making it back to his apartment before Trevor.

John rushed back to his apartment hoping that Trevor was not here yet. He still hadn’t calmed since his meeting with Brian and just wanted to relax and distress before seeing Trevor. He rushed up the steps to his building and opened the door and went upstairs.

As soon as he turned the handle he was assaulted on the threshold.

“Where have you been?” Trevor said nearly knocked over a lamp, his shouting alarming John as he came through the door.

“Hi,” John said coming through the door.

Trevor was visibly upset

“Where did you go?” Trevor asked.

“I went out,” John said pausing to take off his jacket and move into the living room stepping around Trevor, “sorry.”

“What’s wrong with you today?” Trevor asked

“What?” John shrugged

“Don’t be stupid, you’ve been strange all day,” Trevor sighed “are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” John said.

“When do you leave for band?” Trevor asked.

“Three hours,” John replied.

John ignored whatever Trevor was going to ask and retreated into their room and sat down at his own desk.

John did not even open his laptop when he felt a hand on his shoulder

“I wasn’t done telling you,” Trevor began but John held his hand up and scrunched his eyes closed.

“No, you listen to me NOW!” John said, “I don’t want to talk, I want to be alone!”

John opened his eyes and his heart broke when he saw Trevor staring back at him with tears in his eyes.

“I’m sorry I am being a pest,” Trevor said.

Trevor walked out of the room and John sighed and banged his head down on his desk. He just managed to hurt Trevor and he really didn’t mean to.

John sat there with his head leaning against the cold smooth hard surface and rolled his head back and forth feeling the sinews of tissue contract as his skulled rolled and pressed it like dough on a cutting board. He leaned up and sighed and closed his eyes taking a deep breath.

John didn’t need to look to know Trevor was standing in the doorframe.

“I’m sorry Trev,” John said.

John turned to the door where Trevor was standing. His muscular shoulder leaning against the frame, a sad smile etched across his face.

“I am too,” he said.

The looked at each other for a moment and John felt like time was slowing to a halt. They looked at each other both wanting the other to speak. John lifted his hands into the air.

Trevor watched and waited.

“I’m,” Trevor said pointing to himself, and paused a moment and shut his eyes. He slowly lifted his arm and adjusting his hand as if he were pinching salt pressed his index finger and thumb together and then brought them to his chin. As soon as his fingers touched his face his arm began shaking and he let his arm drop to his side.

“Gay,” the words left him in a great sigh.

John didn’t get to open his eyes before he felt the strong arms surround him. The hug was strong and John felt the emotions wash over him and his arms flung out and wrapped around Trevor and held on for dear life.

Painful wrenching sobs broke through yet Trevor held him still and John felt him gently rubbing his back. Trevor pulled away and John felt him lifting his chin. John opened his eyes.

“J, you’re my best friend, I love you,” Trevor hugged him again he released and sat on John’s bed.

“I’m sorry,” John began to say, but Trevor interrupted him.

“Did you think I would leave you, after everything you did for me?” Trevor asked “did you think I was capable, do you even know how much you mean to me?”

John sighed

“When I was little everyone told me I wasn’t normal, that I needed help, that I was broken, but you… you saw me, and you treated me different, you treated me the same.”

“You are the same!” John said agitated but Trevor only smiled.

“You made me believe I could do anything and here I am at Graydon,” Trevor smiled.

“I’ve been deaf my whole life, I have never heard music, I have never been woken by the sounds of the morning, I never gotten to express myself by speaking, and sometimes I think I hear ringing but I will never know.” Trevor signed

“I know,” John said.

“You took my signing classes with me, stood by me and been my friend my whole life.” Trevor said angrily “so I don’t care if you’re gay,” Trevor said flicking his hand off his chin as if in disinterest.

“Trevor you don’t understand, I have feelings for…” John watched Trevor get angry.

“What!” Trevor exclaimed “what don’t I get?”

“I’m in love with you!” John pointed to Trevor with a shaking hand.

Trevor sat dumbfounded and John felt like he was breaking into a million pieces. John was about to get up when Trevor signed

“Wait”

“What?” John asked.

“I have something I want to tell you back, but I want you to believe me,” Trevor signed

John sat on the bed as Trevor’s face contorted and he struggled as if battling something.

“Ja ohnnne” John heard Trevor say and his eyes widened in surprise and tears started to leak from them.

“We’ve been working on spoken words, I told my teacher I wanted to be able to say your name,” Trevor said.

“Trevor, that’s so…” John said but was again interrupted.

“I’m not finished,” Trevor smiled

“I lofve ouh,” Trevor said and it took a moment for John to realize what Trevor said.

“Do you understand?” Trevor asked and John nodded dumbly.

Trevor pulled John off the chair. They stood facing each other and John looked at Trevor in surprise as Trevor leaned in and very slowly their faces came closer together and Trevor wrapped his arms around John who did the same.

The lips met and for that instant everything vanished. The only thing was their hearts and their love as in that moment the two became one in spirit never to be broken.

O.o.O

John graduated in Vocal Education and went on to study for his doctoral and now teaches at Dermois College. Trevor graduated in Economics and is working in for a firm nearby. Trevor never did develop a knack for speaking but whenever they were alone there were three words he often shared. Eventually the two bought a house together and have adopted two children.

But as to how the two of them got there… well that is another story.

The reason John was upset that Trevor came into his music class is because he knew he could not hear it, especially when you would do anything to make it possible.

This Story takes place in the same Universe as ‘Second Shot’ by Quonus10 with permission of course. It is a fantastic story which I suggest you read.

Also I would like to dedicate this story to my friend Monica who has passionately taught me signing and about the lives and struggles of people with hearing loss. Without her the depth of this story would not be possible.

Lastly but not least I would like to thank my editor Frostina who tirelessly works herself to the bone making sure my work isn’t a complete mess.
