Prompts and Short Shorts - 5. Poem - The Attack

WARNING: This poem deals with physical abuse.

---

Your muscular body, tanned and tattooed,

Hid a monster with intentions I clearly misconstrued.

How the hell did I miss all the signs?

Why did I have to be so fucking blind?

Those beautiful eyes, flickering with danger,

My innocence gone in one senseless act of anger.

Muscular arms swung, no longer just holding me tight,

I wish I could delete that day, erase the terror and fright.

The hitting and kicking, you chose this assault.

I fled the room with you screaming “This is your fault!”

Left with the scars I feel nothing but shame,

When I should feel anger as you are the asshole to blame.

The wounds have healed but my mind remains shattered,

Getting rid of the nightmares is now all that matters.

Lying awake as the rest of world sleeps,

Curled in a ball, I still think about it and weep.

You didn’t understand that all I wanted was your love,

I didn’t realize the danger hidden in your playful shoves.

I’m peaceful now as you can’t touch me anymore,

I will remember the lessons of dating you forevermore.
