12.25.14 - 2. Poem Two, Christmas Night
12.25.14
by Foster
About half my measure, in years ago
I planted a hemlock in the corner
Of my wood
It was just my size
Not anymore
I struggle to stand my same height
While it towers below the giant oaks of old
So I have a fondness
On a day in winter
When the sky is clearly blue
And the hardwoods are gray
And the chocolate leaves are ankle deep
That here is a green so green
Lit with the sunlight
An evergreen tree
It’s wondrous
To see flocks of bluebirds
Land among bowed limbs
Even the local woodpecker
Has been known to sit atop for a while
The path I walk encircles the tree
Across the meadow I can see into the park
Where promenades holiday celebrants
Funny how I can have faith
In a tree
