Lost Sock Memorial Day
Lost Sock Memorial Day on May 9 is a day to commemorate lost socks. The unofficial holiday also encourages people to let go of all the remaining single socks they are collecting in hopes of finding their partners one day.
There are few mysteries in life that are as perplexing as the mystery of the missing sock. No matter how hard you try to keep pairs of socks together, invariably one of them ventures out into the netherworld never to be found again.
Lost Sock Memorial Day is a day to honor all those disappeared socks.
How to Celebrate
- Throw out all the single leftover socks.
- Use the leftover socks as cleaning cloths. Or spend the day making sock monkeys out of the socks that have sadly lost their partners to the sock blackhole.
- Have a minute of silence for all the socks you have lost.
Did You Know…
...that the feet have about 250,000 sweat glands that are capable of producing about 1 cup of sweat a day?

Europe Day
May 9 is celebrated as Europe Day in the European Union (E.U.) and around the world.
The holiday commemorates the day in 1950 when French foreign minister, Robert Schuman, presented his proposal to create an organization of European countries. Also sometimes known as Schuman Day, the day aims to garner continuing support for the European Union and to educate citizens in member states and people in the rest of the world about the benefits of such an organization.
How to Celebrate?
- If you live in a member country or are visiting one, this is the time to visit European Union institutions. EU institutions in Brussels and Strasbourg hold open days where they organize public outreach events. Other E.U. countries and cities hold festivals, concerts, and other events to raise awareness about the E.U.
- If you don’t live in an EU member state, do not despair - you can learn more about the E.U. in many other ways. Find out if the E.U. expat community in your city is having public events that you can attend. And if there is nothing going on, remember that Europe Day is at its heart a day to celebrate peace and unity, and you don’t have to be in the European Union to do that!
Did You Know…
…that when the Euro was introduced in 2002, the initials for the countries adopting the currency spelled BAFFLING PIGS? The countries were Belgium, Austria, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Spain.

One of our hotel guests complained to me about a spraying showerhead: "I can't get in the shower without getting wet!"

En route to Hawaii, I noticed one of my passengers in the coach section of the airplane dialing her cell phone. "Excuse me. That can't be on during the flight," I reminded her. "Besides, we're over the ocean—you won't get a signal out here."
"That's okay," she said. "I'm just calling my daughter. She's sitting up in first class."

A couple of dog owners are arguing about whose pet is smarter.
"My dog is so smart," says the first owner, "that every morning he waits for the paperboy to come around. He tips the kid and then brings the newspaper to me, along with my morning coffee."
"I know," says the second owner.
"How do you know?"
"My dog told me."

I got mugged by a magician. It's not funny: He took my wallet, my watch, and every silver dollar I had behind my ear.
