Say Something Nice Day
On June 1, be kind to everyone you meet and say something nice to them because it is Say Something Nice Day. The day aims to encourage people to spread cheer and goodwill by opening up channels of communication and by focusing on the good in everyone.
Also known as National Say Something Nice Day, this unofficial holiday is said to have originated in Charleston, South Carolina. According to some, the originators of the holiday were inspired by Mitchell Carnell's book, Say Something Nice - Be a Lifter @ Work. The book inspires people to be lifters. A lifter is someone who is positive and always says something nice to whoever they meet. The book inspires people to lift others up, not put them down.
Spread Happiness
The message of the day is that positivity goes a long way in spreading happiness and joy. When we are kind in our interactions with others, we receive positivity and kindness back. This enriches our lives, makes us happy, and keeps us healthy. Studies have shown that happy people are healthier and live longer.
How to Celebrate?
- Celebrate the day by saying something nice to everyone you meet. Remember, if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.
- Put aside your petty enmities with people and use this day to try and see the positive in people you usually do not like.
- Leave a nice note or do something nice for a friend, family member, or co-worker.
- Bottom line: just be nice to friends, foes, and strangers alike, and you will notice that you feel much better about yourself!
Did You Know...
...that the saying "if you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all," is often known as Thumper's Law or the Thumperian Principle? Thumper is a fictional rabbit character from Disney's animated movie Bambi.

Do you have a nickname for your beloved? Snookums, maybe? My Little Dollop of Joy? The Brits have lots of them. The London jeweler H. Samuel discovered these pet names signed on gift cards:
• Sexy Pig
• Poo Face
• Sausage
• Chubby Cheeks
• Monkey Boy
• Fatty Bum Bum
• Lobster

After visiting my son at his base, I complained to my brother-in-law: "Security there is so tight, you practically have to give up your firstborn to get in."
He replied, "You did."

It was my friend's first camping trip with her husband, and they were lost. He tried all the usual tactics to determine direction—moss on the trees (there was none), direction of the sun (it was overcast), and so on. Just as she began to panic, he spotted a cabin in the distance. "This way," he said as he led her back to their camp.
"How did you do that?" my friend asked.
"Simple. In this part of the country, the satellite dishes point south."

The road we were on led us to a covered bridge just as another car approached from the opposite direction. At an impasse, the other driver—clearly feeling wronged—shouted, "I never back up for idiots!"
My friend put her car in reverse and replied, "I do."
