Prince Charming goes missing from the pages of Cinderella, resulting in chaos in the offices of Happily Ever After, Ltd. The manager of the Cinderella division, Dorothy Weaver, has to try to salvage a happy ending. She temporarily replaces Prince Charming with nineteen-year-old Ryan Hooper, without realising he’s gay. Inside the fairytale, Ryan tries his best to find a happy ending …

I’m glad you wanted good things for Richard - hopefully it means you liked him as a character At the very end, Richard is not lonely or unhappy; he’s surrounded by friends and family who love him unconditionally (and showed it often). But when Richard’s ready, romantic love could again be on the cards -

@Nana Atuwa Thanks for providing some constructive feedback - it's really useful! In Chapter 8 (Pre-Ball), Richard's mum reveals how his Dad met Maggie. Maybe what I could make clearer in that chapter is that Richard's mum wanted to leave his dad - she wants to be single. Therefore, she encouraged him to explore a relationship with Maggie, so he would be happy enough to agree to a divorce. Thanks so much for reading ❤️ -

@Brokenbind Thanks for your compliment! Yes, Richard was able to see that Nicholas and Stu needed a friend more than he needed to continue with the "Plan". I think he has Harriet and his family to thank for this strength ❤️ -

@avidreadr Thanks so much for your thoughts about the ending. I'd love to know what ends you would've liked to seen tied up - it's set to complete but I'll likely return to it and edit. Even though some ends may be left loose, I'd still aim to provide as much closure as possible. Thanks for reading ❤️ -

@M1984 Thanks for all your comments and compliments. The ending is closer to my real life experience - not tragic, not perfect, but always having the unconditional love of quirky family and friends. ❤️ -
The next Monday, Maggie has the baby. It’s two weeks early, and Dad’s away on business overnight. Mum goes to the hospital and leaves a message with the school receptionist, for Vicky and I go there after school. It’s weird, seeing Mum standing next to Maggie’s hospital bed. It’s Mum who’s holding the baby when we walk in. Maggie looks like she’s been through a car wash but she’s smiling. The baby’s tiny, purple, squashed and asleep. “Boy, girl, or other?” Vicky demands, as soon as w

@M1984 Thanks for reading and for your great comments, I really appreciate them all. I think the escalating disappointments over the course of the story might have forced Richard's realisation about Nicholas eventually...but yes, I think Harriet is the friend Richard needs and deserves. I hope you enjoy the next (& final) chapter 🙂

Thanks for keeping up with the chapters and for your great comments! The next chapter is the last one so I can't really hint about any "comeuppance", but I'm really keen to hear your thoughts. 🙂

I sleep until noon. Mum brings my breakfast on a tray, even though it’s nearly lunchtime. “Breakfast in bed for our brilliant Picasso.” “Picasso painted abstracts,” I mumble. “The thing in the garage is a self-portrait. Sort of.” Mum’s put a little vase on the tray with flowers she’s picked from the garden. There’s a tiny beetle crawling up one of the stems. The withering petals look so pathetic that I burst into tears. I can’t remember the last time I cried in fron

It could have been either Nicholas or Stu, but "It's just Richard" sounds like something Nicholas would think and say. Thanks for the compliment and for reading! 😄

All week, I only see Nicholas from a distance. I see him with Carrie twice. The first time, they’re sitting on a bench and sharing a can of coke. The second time, he’s making her laugh about something and she puts her hand on his shoulder. Friday afternoon comes around quickly. I still haven’t spoken a word to Nicholas since the Ball. “What are you doing this weekend?” Harriet asks at lunchtime. “Apart from moping around over Nicholas?” “I’m not moping,” I lie. “Come over

In the morning, I go downstairs to a quiet but messy house. There are empty wine bottles and lipstick-rimmed wine glasses. There are sticky patches of spilled cocktail everywhere. But I know Vicky is to share in some of the blame; her ball shoes have been kicked off in the kitchen, biscuit packets have been torn open and tossed aside, crumbs cover the floor, and there’s a melted bowl of ice-cream, half-eaten and abandoned on the counter. At least I know she got home safely, hopefully without

It’s weird to be at school on a Saturday night. From the outside, the assembly hall just looks like the assembly hall, but I can see coloured lights swirling inside it, and I can hear the faint beat of the music. I see the cluster of teachers standing out the front, including Mr Jane, and my guts twist. I’m the first one to step off the bus. A woman with big glasses comes marching up to me. “Are you the protest group?” she demands. She’s holding a big camera. “No – no, I

On Sunday morning, I wake up inspired and determined, thanks to The Bad Hats. We’re off and we’re on, the song went, and whenever I love you, that’s when you’re gone. Nicholas and I have been off for a couple of weeks, but we’ll be back on next weekend. I realise now that the problem has been me. I haven’t been doing anything about it. I’ve just been lying around feeling sorry for myself. So I start making a plan. There are still seven days and six nights before the ball. That’

I float through Friday on cloud nine. I smile at everyone. I’m even glad to see Mrs Hansen. I thank for her daft criticism of my first attempt at painting a live subject – the neighbour’s cat who was sleeping on our lawn. “Where’s the feline’s power?” she asks. “Even a slumbering cat has a tiger inside!” “That is so true,” I say. “I’ll try to paint more power next time. Thank you so much!” I’ve never enjoyed school this much before. At lunchtime in the library, I tell Har
