I'm Not From Earth - 29. Notes
n o t e s
(Some background on the story)
Three years ago, my tenth grade English teacher gave us an assignment. He told us to write a short story on whatever we want, but went out of his way to stress that all stories must not only have clarity, be entertaining, or have some other attractive flare -- it must fulfill some sort of yearning purpose, or explore some underlying idea. After submitting a rather wacky straight-boy alien fiction that involved too much violence, too much crude humour, and too much pot, I decided to give birth to a new, strong man-on-martian story for my own devious enjoyment, which I initially named The Alien Child.
Strangely enough, the story started off as a modern spin-off on the "Cinderella" story, wherest her "Prince Charming" comes and rescues the poor lady in distress and whisks her off to happy, baby-making land. As I continued to write, however, I realized something was missing. So I spent a little over two years [juggling homework, battling a lack of writer's inspiration] kicking it around, unceremoniously giving it direction, and ultimately trying to patch up the emptiness that was due to a lack of a point. All the while making sure to resist the temptation to submit chapters in advance. I didn't for three simple reasons: One, I would probably go back to the chapters and edit them a billion times over to my satisfaction [which I did]. Two, I don't always write stories chapter by chapter -- I butcher them accordingly to my fluxuating mood. And Three, well, I probably would never have finished it.
Despite all doubts, towards the end of my 2009 summer vacation, I was finally typing the last words. The end product was significantly different [and slightly less ludicrous], so I decided to give the whole thing a different [also slightly less ridiculous] title; I'm Not From Earth ("!") (exclamation mark at the end highly optional).
If you've made it this far into this [although short] Author's Note, I congratulate you.
I was undeniably yearning to write something, and this has been quite the journey worth reflecting. But now, back to the Olympics...
