Random Musings - 1. Defining Choices

Defining Choices

The choices we make in life define who we are, what we are, our world view, and everything about us. Most people never questioned this. ”It’s just how I am,” is often quoted. But it’s not. You are the way you are because of the choices you make. Granted, in some situations, it would be almost impossible to choose other than you have, but there is ALWAYS a choice. Each decision, each day, each minute involves choices. They are filtered through your world view, and thus through your previous choices. That’s why it is so hard to change – it means invalidating some (possibly most, if not all) of your previous choices. But, all in all, we choose who we are and who we want to be. But what happens when you suddenly wake up and realize the choices that you have made in the past were made for other people and not yourself? That you directed your life down a path that you chose not for yourself but for others? And then when you realize that who you are isn’t who you wanted to be and that you aren’t the person you thought you were? How do you proceed? How do you decide how to redirect your life and how much should the people around you influence the myriad of choices you have before you? And when you do choose your goal, how do you know how to get there? Down which path? In reality, each of these questions is a choice. Even choosing is a choice. Choose one. Try. All of life is a journey, not just the destination. It is the journey that is important and that defines us as an individual. Choices can often be difficult, but don’t let them paralyze you. If a particular path doesn’t lead where you want to go, choose another. Make your choices and go on. Looking back and wishing doesn’t help, since you can’t change the past.

Knowing where your path has taken you, however, can show you glimpses of where you want to go.

Choose your path.

Choose your future.

Choose who you will be, and how.

Choose.

And then keep choosing until you get to where you want to be!

Chapter Comments

I discovered this by accident.  I hope you will soon post more.

I agree with the majority of what you have posted here.  What you said about sometimes making for other is partially true.  In my case I wanted a family, and I made the choices which allowed for that.  As a result I sacrificed a lot of time and effort for two other persons in my life.  It has mostly been worth it.

But now, many years later, I am making a few more choices for myself directly, as a result of a series of events.

You make many good points, @Bryson.   Please write more at some time in the future.
