   (2 reviews)

"I have grown tired of remembering. Mes souvenirs tuent. My memories kill me. So it falls to me to make them known in these writings before my soul is set free at last." ~ Lord Cedrick Temple, Duke of Buckingham

At the turn of the last century the last vestiges of an older era were passing away to make way for the modern. Reflecting back on this time in his youth, Lord Cedrick Temple, Duke of Buckingham, tells his tale of forbidden love challenged by ancient taboos and an all too modern war.

This story left me breathless.

Even through translation, I could sense the beauty of the language, the elegance of the vocabulary, and the consistency with the historical period. I can only imagine how refined the original prose must be — and even though I needed help to fully grasp the nuances, I can say that the stylistic effort is evident, and deeply appreciated.

This story resonates. It doesn’t just tell of love — it echoes with it.

It reached into places in me that I usually keep hidden.

And then, the ending…

It doesn’t close, it expands. It launches beyond time and space.

It carries with it a beautiful surprise for those who know other stories by the same author — and it made me smile in a quiet, meaningful way.

I’ll keep to myself the reasons why this story touched me so deeply.

They’re too personal to share, and I wouldn’t want to take away anything from the experience of those who are about to read it.

What I will say, though, is this:

Thank you to the author.

Once again, you’ve created a world I could lose myself in — and one that will stay with me for a long time to come.

A beautiful tale of one man's ever so fleeting love, and the trials and tribulations surrounding it. Through the pen our protagonist paints a vivid and compelling picture of his past, from the people he loves and has loved to the experiences that have both shaped and destroyed him.

Every sentence is beautifully crafted and one can clearly see the amount of research and love the author has put into every word and phrase, which is beautifully of its time. It is so, so very poetic and I found myself rereading passages over and over just to admire the craftsmanship.

Despite being part of a series, this can very much be read as a standalone; I myself happened upon this lovely story while browsing around for historical romance, and I can safely say that this is one of the best in the genre that I have read thus far, and it both surprises and saddens me that there aren't more eyes on this.

This story has very much earned the 5 stars I have given it.
