Nintendo Switch

Sorry this is late.  It's been a heck of week trying to catch up from that annoying downtime with the internet. Anyway, I picked up a Nintendo Switch on a whim.  This is probably my midlife crisis.  I'll be picking up a Playstation 4 Pro in a few weeks. lol.   Anyway, for my 41st birthday, I picked up a Nintendo Switch so I can relive my youth playing Mario and Zelda.  And Donkey Kong.  And probably Kirby too.   It's definitely a cute little toy and I seriously doubt I'l

Justice League

With my internet down for 3 days except for phone, I've had some time to catch up on other things. (oddly enough).  I got around to watching this finally and I enjoyed it.  Ezra Miller in spandex.... mmm. There were a couple of spots that were a little slower and superman, as ever, is an overpowered hero.  I'd say about 8/10.  well worth watching and keeping in my collection.

Eragon by Christopher Paolini

I really enjoyed Eragon when I read it years ago.  I liked the sequel as well and then I was so tied up I never finished reading the series.  I have them in my giant pile... but I still haven't gotten back to them.  I really need to, since I did enjoy the book so much.   Has anyone else read this?  What do you think?

I will have a Raspberry Pi

So, I have picked up a Raspberry Pi in order to have yet another toy to play with.  Though, in this case, it is so I can learn more about them.  I don't actually need one. Lol.  Anyone else playing with these cute little things for projects?

Batman Begins

Of all the times Batman has been in movie form, the first two movies in Chris Nolan's reboot top them.  Batman Begins gives the gritty, more realistic and most important of all, less campy version of Batman.  This movie hit all the right notes and was only really topped by it immediate sequel, the Dark Knight.  (And then pissed away in that god-awful mess called the Dark Knight Rises.  I swear Nolan purposely trashed that movie so that no one would ask him to make another)   Anyway, Ba

Animal Farm by George Orwell

If you have somehow stumbled through life and not read this, you really should.  I just loved that the history department head at my school, assigned this book.   Far too many of the current generation indoctrinated on BS need something to wake them up.

Fitbit Charge 2

I have been using a Fitbit Surge for a little over a year.  Unfortunately, the Surge was a bit of a dud in the design category.  It was one of the few FitBits without a replaceable band... and guess what broke today.  If you guess the band, then you get a gold star. Anyway, I like the software quite a bit and I especially like the sleep tracking features, which I really need.  So I picked up the cheaper, but more useful Charge 2 to replace my on the way out Surge. This one also has the

The Negotiater

I forgot to set this to post this morning... oops. This is one of those late 90's action movies full of one-liners.  And it features Samuel L. Jackson doing his thing as a BAMF.  If you haven't seen it and you like action movies and one-liners, this is a good movie.

Joust by Mercedes Lackey

This is another coming-of-age story by Mercedes Lackey that she does so well.  This story is powerful and emotional, like so many of Mercedes Lackey's first book in a new series.  (This is a pattern with her.  Pretty much every first book in a series she does is a powerful coming of age story).  The dragons in this story are fairly unique compared to others.  They are characters in their own right, though not speaking or human intelligence.  They are definitely not stupid either.     I

I picked these up a while ago so that I had some tools on hand for emergencies.  They do the job.  Nothing too fancy.

2010: The Year We Made Contact

This is an oldie but goodie.  The visuals in this movie are stunning, especially when you consider it came out in 1984.  It has long fueled my thoughts of space and space exploration.  It is also a much tighter story, unlike the very plodding 2001.  Sci-Fi movies suffered from long, slow scenes to soaring music in the 1965- 1980 timeset.  You can see this in the first Alien movie, the first Star Trek Movie (The Motion Picture), and to a lesser extent Star Wars.   I think Star Wars was the one to

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

As an engineer, I have always been fascinated by how things work.  You can boil down most engineering to "Problem Solving".  Problem solving is a skillset.  The most popular problem solver in popular culture when I was growing up was MacGyver.  Lock the man in a room with some spare parts and a knife and he'd make an airplane.  The people that make the world work are real-life MacGyvers.    In our world, there are not a whole lot of people that fall into this category.  Atlas Shrugged

More Kitchen Stuff

I love these spoons!  They are so handy for cooking and they clean up really easy.  If you are still using a wooden spoon, for all that is holy, try one of these spoons!

V for Vendatta

I must admit that this movie is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me.  It is very well done and the actors do a great job all across the board.  It has gay characters and that are really in a hard spot in the movie. The reason for my guilt is because this movie is clearly a propaganda piece by someone that doesn't understand history at all.  This movie is what a 'progressive' thinks a 'conservative' is.  While in reality, it is projection on the part of the writers.   The movie is in

The Martian by Andy Weir

I had fun last week posting the movie on Monday and the books on Friday, so I figured I'd do it again this week.   This book is a fast read and enjoyable.  I am someone that enjoys science and science fiction.  This is the more interesting science fiction in that it is in the realm of "could happen".  "hard Science"-type sci-fi is the most difficult, of course.  But I think it makes it all the more powerful when done right.   Have you read the book? seen the movie? both?  What do

Getting Properly Toasted

I want to be clear right up from that I'm all for getting properly toasted.  This toaster does the job and beeps when it's done.  There is a bit of an issue when you go back to back if you are doing 4 slices for some reason.  It does the job.   Cheers to getting toasted!

The Martian

So, this week I wanted to plug a geekfest movie.  As anyone interested in space can attest, this is an interesting movie.  This movie is one of those rare occasions where I liked both the book and movie adaptations.  Definitely worth watching if you haven't seen.

The Tower and The Glass Inferno

This Monday in my Monday Movie Mania blog, I posted about The Towering Inferno. The movie was based on two books, that were also worth a read.   It's actually kind of fascinating how they took concepts from each book and made them into a unique movie that worked really well on its own.  Oddly enough, I like the movie better than either book, but both books stand well enough on their own.  They are worth a look if you're into disaster stuff.

Blacklights and Posters

I love my blacklights.  Check out my mancave setup: Now, the two outer posters have a blacklight directly on them and the center one does not (yet)   For the geeks amongst you, you've probably noticed the Star Trek Voyager box set glowing on the mid-left of the picture.

The Towering Inferno

I thought I'd jump into the way back machine and bring up a movie that's even older than I am.  I was big into disaster movies when I was a kid and there was quite the string of them of them in the 70's.  This was a grand-daddy of them with a who's who from a couple major studios coming together.  You had superstars of the time together in this thing.  Paul Newman and Steve McQueen.  They have exactly the same number of lines.  There are a ton of other recognizable stars of the day in there and

Am I Blue?: Coming Out From the Silence

I originally about this book because of one of the authors, Bruce Coville (Monster's Ring) is a local author in the area where I grew up.  I was read Monster's Ring I think in 5th or 6th grade as reading and discussion hour.  Anyway, this is a great anthology from back in 1995 when I graduated high school well before it was common to see any gay-themed books published anywhere.  This is an enjoyable anthology collection that is a quick, but worthwhile read.  I really enjoyed the title story: Am

Hitachi Jobsite Tablesaw

For those of you with hobbies that involve building things, or remodeling the house or whatever, this saw comes highly recommended by my uncle, who is a professional contractor.  Lowes had a nice sale on them, so I picked one up.  I have a few projects on my agenda for this summer and next summer that this will be very handy for.  Mancave stage 2 is scheduled for this summer.  I'm making a nice workshop extension to my mancave.  It will also double as place to relax on those great summer evening

Anicient Aliens Season 1

So, this is a TV show and not a movie... but the show is really fascinating.  There are 10 seasons now.  What I love about the show is that it asks questions that don't have ready answers.  Now, I don't agree with them jumping to "it was aliens!" to everything they ask.  But that doesn't change the fact that something is wrong with the history that we know. Oh.. And this is the source of Alien Hair Guy Meme.   I've used some of the questions generated by this show as backgro

The Filly by Mark R. Probst

So I have the paperback version of this book.  I found it while re-organizing my mancave's closet.    I enjoyed this book when I read it.  I think it's worth a read.  You don't see too many gay westerns.  Check it out.

Razer Chroma Keyboard

I'll be in the market for a new keyboard soon, as the one I'm using to write this is very well worn.  I've worn away the letters on about 10 keys and I'm looking to get a replacement from a different manufacturer.   The settable LED lights appeal to my geekdom.   Of course... this keyboard also ties in with Hue, which I'm deploying all over the place.
